I'm curious what gauge wires you use to connect those external stepper drivers to the motors and the board. I have some Nema 17 motors and the wires that were provided seem extremely thin. In fact when I put a ferrule on the end of one if I don't double it over it will often pull out. It seems to me a slightly larger wire diameter might be a good idea. Your thoughts? Thanks. i have a similar problem but not sure if it is related to the stepper driver or motor. My "z" axis on my router is creeping downward. At first I thought it was something mechanical mainly because I did not note any change in DRO location. I checked all mechanical related possibilities. No problems. I then ran program and noticed that knob on top of motor was rotating significantly at a couple of positions in a cutting pattern of circle and plunging into workpiece; locations of movement were approximately 180 degrees apart. No input was given and DRO showed no downward movement. it is almost like a impulse was given via induction? However, there was significant tool chatter when it occurred. Not sure if chatter was the result of unwanted movement or the chatter preceded the movement. Any suggestions where to go from here.
I wonder if you could help me please. I have one of the Chinese 6040 routers, which is 3 year old now. It's started leaving lines across my carvings and on a big 500mm long carving it drops by about 2mm from one end to the other. I have checked and my bed is level. The Z motor also give a grumble like sound every now and then. I have checked the wiring and have found nothing as in bad connections. Do I need a new stepper motor do you think. Thank you for any help you can give, Terry
Always check the mechanical things first. Is your stepper motor coupler slipping? If your wires have plugs on each end make sure that not only are the plugs pushed all the way in but also the wires are not loose in the plug. You could try switching one of the wire cables with another axis and see if the problem moves to that axis. Stepper motors are nearly bullet proof so I would suspect either a loose coupler or a bad electrical connection or bad cable. Also, make sure the z axis is not binding.
Thank you Dave for you quick reply, very much appreciated. I don't notice it on smaller jobs, but it made quite a difference on this 500m long job. It is one of the smaller stepper motors on the z axis. The other two (X Y) are bigger, I just wondered if it was too small. Thanks again for your reply, Terry.
HI, I have a symptom not mentioned here. When the driver is powered up, I am just getting a holding pulse, once every 1 second. What are the typical reasons where this may happen, when I am expecting the stepper motor to be held in place, awaying pulses. Thanks.
I'm using an a4988 stepper motor driver to drive a stepper motor I salvaged from an old Epson printer scanner bed. I managed to get it working and moving in both directs with an arduino sketch. Then, after working on something else for a few days. When I tried again, it would only turn in one direction and was getting pretty hot. checked the wiring several times but it turned out to be the driver. I only found out because I changed the driver and it worked fine. Will have to do more homework on calibrating the motor I guess. Thanks for the tips.
Great stuff, I have a different issue, I am running grbl 1.1f with nema 23 3Nm with the drivers DM542T, and my motors are unable to move unless I specify it to move more than 20 mm, I am running all of them at full steps, the current is properly setted, and when I run any g-code, it doesn't matters if I crated a g-code with a slow feed rate, it always moves way too fast, can anyone help me please?
My stepper motor moves to the right way normally but when it moves to left direction it gets stuck suddenly I hope you can help with this issue Thank you in advance
i am facing the same problem had tried all the solutions changing wire combination, code, pins drivers but the motor is still sometime gives a beep only or rattles with beep and the strange thing is that motor is showing continuity in all four pairs, led blew up no matter what the wire combination is it show continuity on pairing 1,2 -1,3 -1,4 and so on for all. I had tried running motor directly with arduino without motor driver and it is running, but facing issue while it is connected to CNC shield with A4988 driver. I am using Arduino uno and motors are 4 pinned. Could you please tell me what I am doing wrong?
Hey Dave any experience with a motor refusing to change directions. My z will only go up not down. Goes up with pg up and with page down. Checked ping 6 an 7 and I can see the voltage change so i dont believe its the UC100/Mach3 setup. I am still on an old Xylotec. Plugged Z into my Rotary axis to that output nd it does the same thing .. Rotates both same direction with pageup/page down. I am blaming on the driver but I wonderer if you had some experience/recommendation.

My stepper setup stalled randomly as it was working fine making a loud noise then stopped working altogether. I changed the driver but somehow the driver green light doesn't even come on :((( I checked the voltage and it was 24V so it wasn't a power issue I feel. I powered up other devices so not sure what the hell is going on. I checked all the wiring. It's full on dead :(
No one else ever responds to this question i posted ,maybe you have an idea... my ender 5 has just started acting up with a strange issue which seems motherboard driver related... on one print it stopped approx one hour into printing...nozzle is fused to the print since heat to nozzle shuts off also...this happened 3 times printing this file which used to print fine...i probably have over 30 prints with success... so then i prints another file which is a bit less complex and printer has less effort i guess you could say... i can print these which take over 10 hours without a issue... i thought maybe stepper motors were getting to hot so i even setup a box fan which kept motors cool to the touch and it still stopped 50 minutes into the print... i have fixed everything on this machine over the past year ,but i am stumped.... i just ordered a new motherboard for it...Anyway what do you think issue is??? thanks
I came upon your video because I am at my wits end. You seem to be knowledgeable, maybe you can offer me an idea. My X-ray machine has 3 stepper motors and one of them just vibrates and doesn’t spin. It buzzes also. The motor tests fine , I have 3 other spare motors and the same thing happens with them all. It is a 4 wire 2 phase motor. The board seems to be okay, also. The four pins connected to a different motor by switching the cable, works fine. That brings me to the wire. It seems like it has to be the wire, but how can it? There is continuity on each lead from one end to the other. It’s possible though the plug connectors aren’t contacting. One of the leads isn’t locked into the housing. It looks sort of like a DuPont coupling between the motor and wire. If one lead was not making contact, or was poorly contacting, would that give me the problem I am having? It’s a 40k machine that’s only 10 years old. The manufacturer doesn’t support it anymore, I can’t get another wire. I can try to make one, but the pancon 100 series connector going into the board is going to be hard to find. Right now I have no X-ray machine! Any thoughts would be awesome. Thank you. R

@@DaveGatton of course I did. A few times. But there are four and six wire motors. And since the symptoms your motors exhibited weren't the same as what I am experiencing, I thought you might have seen my symptoms associated with some sort of weak or sporadic connection
