      @@user-hs5ew6yc6v Every country has a certain window of development. China's window of development was not so fast before it joined the WTO.
      Japan's development window is the Korean War, South Korea's development window is the Vietnam War.
      During the Vietnam War, when the United States needed to find a fulcrum in Asia, the fulcrum was South Korea, and the memorandum was signed in '66. I won't talk about the military, but there was actually a paper on the economy.
      The U.S. -South Korea memorandum, at the economic level, includes:
      The United States provides all military assistance to ease South Korea's budgetary and financial difficulties
      The United States provided equipment and rapidly expanded South Korean military enterprises
      The United States paid for all the South Korean troops sent to Vietnam
      The United States agreed to modify some of its 1965 military assistance program in light of South Korea's economic situation, taking into account the government's demands to conserve foreign exchange reserves and secure budgetary resources
      Logistics supplies for South Korea's Vietnamese troops will be ordered from South Korea as far as practicable, as well as supplies for the U.S. and South Vietnamese forces if South Korea has the ability and price to do so
      As much as possible, USAID supplies for rural construction, peacekeeping, disaster relief, and logistics in Vietnam will be ordered from South Korea at reasonable prices
      To the extent permitted by the Vietnamese government, give Korean contractors more opportunities to participate in projects contracted by the U.S. government and businessmen, and employ as many skilled Korean workers as possible
      The United States expanded technical assistance to South Korea
      An additional $100 million in international development loans to South Korea and additional development loans to support South Korea's economic development
      The United States will provide a $15 million project loan in 1966 for Korean technical personnel in Viet Nam, among other needs
      In December 1967, in order to thank The Rok for sending more troops to Vietnam, President Johnson personally assured Park Chung-hee that, "Although the Congress has reduced the total amount of U.S. foreign MAP aid from $620 million to $400 million, President Johnson has ordered to maintain the scale of aid to South Korea while reducing the amount of aid to other countries.
      At its peak, Vietnam accounted for 3.5% of South Korea's annual output, and at its low, 0.6%
      ; Of the total exports, 47.3% at the highest point and 5.1% at the lowest.
      It accounted for 43.6% of foreign exchange reserves at the peak and 12.0% at the bottom.
      The foreign trade balance accounted for 41.7% at the peak and 14.4% at the bottom
      Boosted by the "special needs" of the Vietnam War, South Korea's trade ties with Vietnam were suddenly strengthened and its export earnings to Vietnam soared. In 1964, South Korea's exports to Vietnam were only $6 million, which increased to $16.78 million in 1965 and $37.98 million in 1968, accounting for 7.6% of South Korea's total exports that year
      Between 1962 and 1965, South Korea received a total of $980 million in United States military assistance, with an annual average of $227 million;
      In the fiscal year from 1966 to 1971, when South Korea sent troops to Vietnam, the total figure rose to us $2221.6 billion, with an average annual increase of US $370.26 billion and an average annual increase of 1.64 times.
      From 1965 to 1970, the United States spent $928 million to support South Korea's military assistance to Vietnam, of which nearly $546 million was directly earned by South Koreans
      From 1963 to the end of June 1970, South Korea sent 24,294 workers to Vietnam, accounting for more than half of the total number of 43,508 workers sent overseas during this period.
      In 1965 alone, foreign exchange sent by overseas workers to South Korea accounted for 10.5 per cent of merchandise exports and 14.6 per cent of non-trade income.
      From 1965 to 1972, The regular income of South Korea in Vietnam was about 280 million US dollars, and the foreign trade income was about 740 million US dollars. During the Vietnam War, the income accounted for 2.1% of GNP per year on average, 24.3% of total exports, 29.7% of foreign exchange income, and 30.6% of trade income.
      See if these Numbers don't make sense?
      Just to say this point: "From 1965 to 1970, the United States spent 928 million dollars to support the South Korean troops assisting Vietnam, among which nearly 546 million dollars was directly earned by the South Koreans." In the 1960s, how much was the 500 million dollars equivalent to?
      In the 1960s, China's biggest year for foreign exchange was 1969, with total foreign exchange reserves of $483 million.
      Until the late 1970s, China's foreign exchange reserves did not exceed $1 billion.
      What is the population of South Korea now? But 50 million or so, 1.4 billion in China, how many times more than South Korea? 28 times, if you multiply that 546 million times 28, is China still flying?
      Do you know how difficult it is for a developing country to get some foreign exchange? When China was short of foreign exchange, it was still selling to those rich people in the Middle East (Saudi Arabia, you).
      A Vietnam war ended, South Korea and get the money, and the training of technical personnel, win-win.

      korean has to work really hard to create a brand of high tech product, and it is in asia so the customers are far away, which adds more costs making them harder to compete.

    Japan's GDP per capita has barely budged since 1995. It has stayed within the same band between $32,000 and $49,000. Germany and France haven't made much progress either. South Korea is the big winner of the four that has continually made progress through the entire 50-year period. It'd be interesting to also look at PPP. South Korea and Japan are basically the same these days. I think Korea actually stands a good chance to pass Japan, Germany and France.

    • @jefferylue8260
      @jefferylue8260 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @Mint coke If you want a present called "plaza accord" from U.S, Korean's GDP will boost two times immediately, and surpass Britain and France, catching up with Germany, and within 10 years, industries will shift to other countries, and together with the low birth rate , South Korea entering the lost decade. And apparently, Japan and Korea government realize this, so both started devaluating their currency, might benefit long term, but the gap of gdp per capita between Japan and Korea is again getting bigger after 2015.

    • @jefferylue8260
      @jefferylue8260 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @Mint coke Whatever you feel happy, no one is going to think Korea to be the same level of Japan in all aspects anyway. Your country is simply to tiny to join the global theatre. Not to mention it's not even an independent country. (So is Japan and Germany)

    • @jefferylue8260
      @jefferylue8260 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @Mint coke I don't know, yes, of course, who cares about a tiny country that is not even a top 10 global economy. What I know is Japan has higher GDP, higher GDP per capita, and higher quality of life( HDI and life per capita) and more cultural influences. As for sovereignty, Korea does not even have control of its own army, none of the truly independent country will give up war-time operation rights, it's ridiculous. Oh and, Korean people's always has highest confidence around the world, that's good.

    • @jefferylue8260
      @jefferylue8260 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Mint coke Sorry, but i have to correct you, first, i am not Chinese, i have a Chinese last name, does not mean I am Chinese. Second, my apology that I might misunderstand your comment, cuz there are some obvious grammar errors that can be really misleading and confusing. Third, I am not a professional analyzer of East Asian economy, I am just giving my comments and thoughts on two countries, does not necessarily corresponds to your comments, a large part of my comment is just my own thoughts.

    • @jefferylue8260
      @jefferylue8260 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Mint coke Yeah, i know China and India have lots of population. But if you really want to compare two countries, why wouldn't you compare the population and land size ? More population meaning more people to do work and to study. Why do you think U.S is a global superpower ? I don't think it can still be, if it's population is decreasing to 30 million instead of 300 million. China is no doubt a dictator regime, people all know that, but only a very small portion of people deny on its economy's success. China has more global 500 universities and higher natural index compared to Korea and even Japan, yes, it's the benefit of high population, but you can't really deny that population is important. There are so many disadvantages of small population countries, like vulnerable during war time(recent Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict), strongly rely on international market, lack of natural resources etc. For example, Qatar has higher GDP per capita compared to Britain, but many Qatar billionaires live in London, very few of British billionaires live in Qatar, why do you think that happen ? Most Hong Kong billionaires has two nationalities, lots live in Canada and Britain. Macau, which is a super rich region heavily relied on gambling, and it's economy collapse and decreasing by 70% during the pandemic, while U.S on the other hand, has relatively small lost. Small countries has disadvantage and it's determined at the moment the country is created, sorry to point it out.

    South Korea is still poor and weak. Foreign investors do not invest in South Korea. Because of the possibility of war. So South Korea's money is devalued by 30-40%. This is called 'Korea Discount'. South Korea is Israel in East Asia. South Korea has a small land, a small population, and is actually an island. Keep in mind that South Korea is still half body. North Korea is slowly collapsing, and it won't last long. If Korea is unified and peace comes, Korea will become a great power like Britain and France. I am sure about that.
