hey there, merry christmas. this was supposed to be out uhhhh on christmas. santa was drunk on christmas eve. love you all, thanks for an amazing year. (tension rising, in fact, plays during non-bosses. idk why i said that)
My favorite bit of the final Xemnas fight is that when he captures Sora in the life drain beam he sometimes says "Can you spare a heart?" And considering Sora has like three hearts in him at the time it is a valid question.
It‘s times like these where I wish that I could just reset all my knowledge of Kingdom Hearts lore. Just the sheer absurdity of OP saying that the main character has *three hearts* inside of him, only to be told that he actually has *four hearts,* which is then corrected by a third person saying that he actually has *five hearts* is just so funny and among the reasons for why I fell in love with these games and this side of the community
It actually is explained in the kh recap book that the lingering will mistakes sora for riku because sora had gotten the keyblade that was supposed to be given to riku due to riku falling to darkness. He then realizes you aren't him so naturally assumes that you must be working for xeahnort since you stole said keyblade so decided to fight you to take you down before realizing you alright.
I had actually guessed this when I first fought him. I remembered something about some character saying rikku was the original weilder of the keyblade but if it was in KH1 I forgot cause the gameplay of it was so bad I couldn't finish it.
I think Lingering Will still doesn’t realize you ain’t Riku since he says ‘that’s the power I sensed within you’ to Sora, when it was Riku he gave the keyblade to. Eh, whatever.
I actually have a headcanon regarding Demyx's "Dance Water Dance" attack. My theory is that he does that attack as a distraction so that he can escape. The whole time you're fighting those water clones, he's looking for his opportunity to slink away, and once you run out of time, he's already found his opportunity, and bolted. You lose, because you lost him.
Apparently if you don't beat the water clones, Sora gets overwhelmed and Demyx gets away. So it's the equivalent of throwing a bucket of water on someone and running around the corner.
"...shoot a beam through Xemnas in a move that is usually reserved for keyholes, but clearly works on assholes too." Well, I'm pretty sure this is the best line that has ever appeared in anything even tangentially related to Kingdom Hearts. Pack it in everybody, the discourse has peaked, it's all downhill from here.
Think my favorite part of the Final Xemnas fight is how he very quickly identifies Sora as a greater threat, being that he tries to fuck him up way more, but even Riku knows that, since he took two lightsabers to the face just to avoid Sora getting hit once. It's neat
Sora basically gets bullied throughout the whole fight. It’s not until Riku gets hit that Sora unleashes an assault that Xemnas can’t even defend against, which is really nice mid-fight storytelling.
In hindsight, that explains a lot about DDD: Nort’s not gonna admit it, but he’s kinda terrified of this kid and wants him gone NOW. There’s nothing more dread inducing to a chess master who plans for everything, then someone who doesn’t HAVE a plan to foil. He can’t be manipulated into backstabbing, he can’t be goaded into darkness, he can’t be locked out of the loop because he’ll just find his way into someone’s problems anyway to solve them and thus find you, and worst of all, HE JUST WON’T DIE
That's kinda funny, because Sora really does have a tendency to just throw a wrench into everyone's plans. Ansem the Wise even straight up says that his plans fell apart as soon as Sora became an active force when he's sacrificing himself in kh2. @@spindash64
1:17:25 He actually casts a single fireball without his key in Days during the magic tutorial. They even went through the effort of giving him a key-less casting animation for that one single moment.
I have an answer for the Demyx minigame-loss question if you're interested. If Demyx wins his minigame: (Encounter 1) Demyx succeeds in wasting Sora's time and escapes with the stone of Olympus. (Encounter 2) Demyx was always trying to escape rather than fight. So if he can buy time with his Water Clones then he can pull some kind of escape routine that ends the run. This is because if he wastes too much of Sora's time then he can't make it to the Final Fantasy Characters to help them with the Heartless (They are helpless without a Keyblade Wielder nearby). Also, If Sora is unable to defeat the 1000 Heartless before they get too close to the Radiant Garden centre then they will overwhelm and destroy the town. (In the Data Battle) He probably crashes the computer by putting too many models on screen at one time for too long, forcing you to restart the fight.
I think Jack isn't actually cursed until the end of the fight, when he gets shot but reveals that he's holding a piece of cursed gold. Like, he sneaks over and snags a piece while the cutscene is starting? Idk I don't remember the offer offhand, it's been like a year since I last played.
@@SeisoYabai Jack let himself be cursed before the fight, which is why Barbossa has Pete summon a Heartless to help him out Still weird that letting Jack get knocked out is a lose-condition for that fight, considering numerous factors 1. Getting knocked out is not equivalent to dying 2. You can just use a potion on a knocked out party member to wake them up 3. And even if you don't they eventually wake up automatically 4. How does Jack getting knocked out benefit Barbossa to the point that Team Classic [as Melody of Memory calls 'em] goes "oh damn we lost" The only explanation I can entertain is that Barbossa can take the chance from Jack being knocked out to take the medallion he has back and forcing Will to undo the curse
I actually think that it has something to do with intellectual property and shit like that. Maybe Johnny depp said something in the line of "you can use my character in my film but he can't die during that boss battle" or something
Well, there is a reason - it's because canonically, Barbossa dies after that fight due to an injury sustained while immortal. Taken from that perspective, it makes sense. It's just really silly outside that context.
The obvious reason Mr Smee wasn't a super boss in BBS was because they already slapped mysterious figure in there and didn't want to make the player rage anymore they already were going to.
Honestly Sora slicing a building into a million pieces in a second with ease is really cool, but there is a single thing I rate above it. I really love the Session limit. Something about it is insanely cool to me, just seeing the two of them back-to-back unleashing attacks with names like "XIII Blades" hits the funny parts of my brain that make me go "Wooooaaaahhhh."
God my absolute favorite part of Twilight Thorn is the fact that it also eats horrible shit when you both fall from the sky. I also love how Roxas hits the ground so fucking hard he ***bounces*** which is very hard to do for dense objects falling
I literally just finished replaying KH2 for the first time since the original release, haha. How topical! I’m stuck by myself for the holidays, fighting boredom and a bit of loneliness, so a nice, feature-length RP video is just the ticket.
Welcome back to the KH community. I was one of the og ps2 players and replayed the games about 5 years ago and have been playing it since. I didn't know that the community was still thriving since I was a kid, but it's huge and still a thing thats growing.
Pretty sure a design doc or something said Demyx was channeling a large spell during his water clone segments. Sorta a trade-off skill where he needs to be uninterrupted to complete the long casting time but in return it's guaranteed defeat if he casts it. No idea why they don't actually complete an animation for it or anything. Sure it might have gotten old if you failed multiple times, but as is, yeah it just looks weird for Sora to just be somewhat annoyed on the restart screen. Also raises the question why he doesn't just quietly cast that spell while you are doing... literally anything else anywhere, but those types of loopholes would leave you without a game.
@@TheKeyblader133 that would actually be so sick and I wish the devs did more stuff like that… KH’s magic systems don’t really matter that much imo so why not just start giving characters some crazy spells? Especially water based spells since those are so new to the series, but they had such good implementation into 3
Great ranking! Points out a lot of the brightest spots in an artistically uneven but always entertaining game. On the Dark Thorn: doesn't it strike anyone else that Dark Thorn is meant to evoke what a Heartless formed from the Beast would resemble, since the Beast is obviously never going to succumb to the Organization in the actual plot?
I was thinking that; he does have those rose thorns encircling its body. Conceptually, at least according to Nomura, Dark Thorn is based on the Ifrit summon as it appears in FFX
Xemnas has one of my favorite combat styles ever. The lightsabers, the spins and flips, the thorns, the barriers and orbs, and of course the lasers and the laser dome, it's just all so stylish.
The main thing I forget going into these videos is just, how funny you make them. You throw in just little jokes that I never see coming and it just catches me off guard. Just throw some little guys into Xemnas's big building pylons, see what happens. Also I can't believe you convincingly argued why the Hydra is a more interesting boss fight than Sephiroth and like, you're right. It's. I never considered it beyond Get up on the hydra's back, despite enjoying it. Regular Pat really coming in swinging with unexpected but valid takes
With regard to the Pete and Maleficent = Team Rocket thing, I've always wanted there to be a Great Mouse Detective world and for them to pick up Ratigan as their Meowth.
This is a good list. Lingering Will is my favorite fight in the series so I would put him at the top but the bronze is fine. I’m just glad to see Ursula’s Revenge near the top where it belongs even if it’s not a traditional boss. Although, I couldn’t help but notice the omission of the optional superboss battle against Piglet in 100 Acre Woods. That one makes Sephiroth feel like solo Selphie
I don't know if I'm talking out my ass here, but one other thing I've come to love about the Lingering Will is that, when you think about it, he's the closest KH has come to having a Dark Souls boss. Aesthetics-wise, I mean. Think about it, you travel to this mysterious war-torn wasteland, and there you find a sentient suit of armor, literally powered by a dead (for a given brand of death in the KH universe) man's rage. A walking symbol of the hatred and despair this man felt in his final moments, harkening back to something that happened long, long ago. Time has reduced him to a literal shell of his former self. All that's left is his combat prowess and a hatred that's grown so wild that he's started to mistake anyyone who even passes by for the subject of his rage. And everything about his story (in KH2 at least) is shrouded in implication and mystery. That all feels very souls like to me.
I feel like darkside, being a giant shadow being with snakes coiled around its head that exists as like a warden in hell (The Kingdom hearts equivalent at least), could also be included.
Before the number 7 slot I actually thought to myself "So the next boss is gonna have more heads than the Hydra, right?" sarcastically, only to get a big smile on my face when you actually brought it up. Thanks for another great video! I look forward to seeing what the next year holds for you and your content!
The moment when Xemnas busts out the laser ball is for me the most hype moment not just in the KH games, not just in gaming but probably in all of media. I died about 20 times because I thought I should just mash triangle, but even so it remains one of the coolest moments. Or as Xemnas would say: What a satisfying denouement.
From Memory Skyscraper recreating Another Side, Another Story, to chopping up buildings, to chasing a dragon mech created from a world that never was, to fighting the pilot of said dragon mech in space riding the destroyed remnants of the buildings to create an opening in its defenses, to finally fighting side by side your long time rival and best friend in a realm of nothingness in one final fight against Xemnas himself. Seriously have not experienced a boss rush that is as epic as this one to this day.
@@wiseman46237 KH1 and KH2 have both full circle moments that are so epic and satisfying. KH1 has you fighting Riku on the island (which he is the toughest there) and you could fight him infinite times if you wanted to. To then fighting him in the top center of this huge castle. Both of you exploring different worlds but on different sides. KH2 gives you a team up we have been waiting since the first game. Its like Riku caused the first game's boss battle but here he is along side you helping in stopping it.
48:56 i brought my ps3 over to a friends house years ago, and he had 2 single digit age sisters. We were talking turns fighting Larxene's absent silhouette in critical mode. One of his sisters asked if she could try so i said sure. This 9yo ended up fumbling the menu into using master form and proceeded to button mash Larxene to death by pure chance. She knew how to attack and use the menu to heal herself, that was it. She just kept spamming reflect trying to heal and Larxene just happened to go down one hit before she did.
I compared Cerberus's KH1 model with his KH2 model and they are the exact same 3d model. There are three reasons I believe for why Cerberus feels smaller in KH2: 1. Sora is slightly taller now. 2. The camera is further away from the action in KH2 compared to its predecessor. Bosses like Cerberus which previously dominated our field of vision by being so close to the camera are now naturally further away. I believe it's for this reason the game introduced several new bosses that are even bigger than any of KH1's bosses. 3. And this is probably the biggest reason Cerberus feels smaller: Sora's vastly improved agility. I KH1 just getting on top of Cerberus was such a huge challenge, even with abilities such as High Jump and Glide. While in KH2 Sora can easily jump over his body without needing any additional abilities.
"Isn't it weird that Hades is Hercules' uncle?" Not as weird as how, since Triton is the Greek god of the seas and the son of Poseidon, Ariel's father is Hercules' cousin.
When I was a kid I got annoyed that my older brother said I couldn't beat Sepiroth, especially since my forms weren't leveled up.... Like... At all. So I sat down and grinded out attempts until I beat Sepiroth with no movement abilities. That's not a brag, it's a regret
So I always interpreted the Lingering Will recognizing Sora and then thinking he's Xehanort as him recognizing his keyblade instead. Then, when he realizes it's not Riku he's talking to, assumes it's Xehanort having stolen another body and goes apeshit.
1:09:10 something I literally just noticed when playing through the game yesterday, but he actually does have Demyx’s sitar, not just his water clones. If you look on the ground, it’s buried under what looks like a glass panel in the center of the floor. Luxord’s cards will also shoot out after a while, so he has the weapons of every single organization member fight in this game. I just thought that was neat. :)
I remember Storm Rider being one of the first bosses shown off for the game in an EGM magazine or something and being super hyped to fight it. Although I wonder if both it and the Shan Yu fight would’ve been improved if they’d done like the manga and made THIS the Clayton + Stealth Sneak equivalent and Shan Yu was riding it around. Make Xigbar responsible so he could actually show up for the first visit, then you could focus more on him the second round Also, as someone who first played KH2 on release when I was 15 and had been playing games for a decade… the Twilight Thorn fight’s cutscenes were still mind blowing
When I saw the Lingering Will do all of his fancy keyblade morphing, I just saw that and said "I wanna do that!" Which is exactly what they did in KH3! It feels like being able to transform your Keyblade is a mark of great skill in the KH series. Even thought Sora loses all of his abilities, he just bounces right back so it makes sense that he can pick up some new tricks.
of all the KH rankings/tier lists I gotta say that yours are always my favorites. Maybe it’s just my appreciation for deadpan humor, but I thoroughly enjoy watching and rewatching these
24:44 "...but it's not everyday you get to team up with a walking, talking mustache clock to violently calm the nerves of this wolf-bear-buffalo monster in a cape." OMG, I love the reference! I still haven't seen the full musical, but that musical number is amazing for sure! 😊 That's a such an awesome reference, and this video is already really funny. Keep up the great work, Pat! I'm looking forward to the rest of this video and others. 😁👌🏼
I remember finally beating Demyx on my ps2 playthrough as a kid and running around the house CRYING because it was so important. I did get diagnosed with autism later on don't worry :))
As for Hercules being weak to barrels (which I should have commented on the KH1 Boss ranking) , it might be the most loosest reference to the shirt of Nessus. To cut the story down to the important detail; Heracles' wife was worried he found another lover and was tricked by a dying centaur named Nessus into giving Heracles a shirt soaked in a barrel of hydra venom. The shirt stuck and ate away at Heracles' flesh and the pain was so unbearable heracles threw himself into a pyre to burn it off.
Y'know I always headcanoned Roxas's mastery of light as lightSPEED! Considering Reversal and how freaking fast he goes when you play as him in Remind it makes sense to me.
There is a moral in the sister cant beat Demyx story. The moral is that trying is important, not succeeding. You can't expect someone to nail everything, it's about putting the message close to their heart that trying is the important part. She still tried to beat it and simply couldn't do it - but there was an attempt. Years down the line (if she remembers it at all) she'll definitely be grateful for it. It's a good thing to cheer someone on and put faith into their competence, even if they fail. There is no reason to gatekeep them though when the going gets tough. Particularly this holds true when you consider it's a story fight, not optional content. Being unable to progress through the story because of an overtuned bossfight shouldn't be the moral of the lesson - it would be understandable if she couldn't beat Lingering Will because that fight in its entirety holds no meaning in the story, it's just a challenge.
Definitely something you're unlikely to catch unless playing on Critical/doing a level one run. Barbossa isn't a super hard fight on its own, unless you're bad at the game your party shouldn't have any trouble staying alive if they're keeping up in level.
Its finally here! And I would love a video on the data battles of the Organization. They're actually my favorite part about Kingdom Hearts, as well as your different enemies in the game.
I had never seen nor heard about the Barbossa fight having an extra lose condition with Jack getting knocked out. But like it was said about it happening during the level 1 crit playthrough, I guess I am not too surprised that I have never seen it mentioned before.
1:16:05 what do you think Xemnas’ drink of choice is? I feel like he might be a “red box-wine drunk out of a glass that’s way too expensive and fancy for box-wine” type guy.
Should probably let you know, since you consistently noted confusion, lore has indicated that Heartless that haven't captured any hearts are called "Non-emblem" Heartless. It's stated that the normal form of Non-Emblem Heartless are often the Shadow enemies you most commonly encounter. However, there are mutations, most notably in the form of the Neo Heartless. So it's possible to encounter powerful Heartless that haven't collected any hearts. This is why a few of the heartless bosses don't have emblems and don't release hearts when defeated.
I always thought that the Dark thorn was What beasts heartless would have been if xaldin had corrupted his heart enough to make it final. Like how darkside came from Sora at the beginning of KH1, I always imagined that the dark thorn was beasts version.
I normally am against rating a video you havent watched to completion, but every time I see a new Regular Pat video, I hit it with the frame one thumbs up
I always viewed the Xemnas arena as a realm b/w the realms of Light and Darkness. Since TWTNW is already not in the Realm of LIght iirc, the Gummi Ship sequence before it comes into question, and if you pay close attention, the Gummi Ship Sequence background and the Background of the Final Xemnas are actually the same but with different colors
I know it's very explicitly stated somewhere, pretty sure it's stated at least once in the game itself, both twilight town and the world that never was are pretty firmly situated in the realm between... which opens up a lot of questions about gummi ships and how they work since they can apparently travel between realms just at will.
it's been great to watch your channel grow over this year, and this video definitely feels like a culmination of 2021 for you. really appreciate the hard work on it around the holidays because PHEW that runtime, but every second was worth it. part of the reason kh2 has such an indelible impact is that final boss battle with xemnas. for all the meh fights sprinkled throughout as you illustrated with the lower rankings, xemnas' last stand has you walking away every time feeling satisfied on both a gameplay and story level in a way i'm not sure the series will ever be able to top with a final boss. i'd love to see them do it, but man. it's a tough act to follow. personally i probably would've put roxas as number one, but i'll admit that's mostly because i value a boss fight that can make me misty eyed. (on that note, i'm not holding my breath for a days boss ranking but i mean. can number one be anything but xion? her theme alone gets me in my feelings.) overall, i love watching your videos like this because it's nice to see all these battles and their game design elements broken down and analyzed. i think it can be easy to fly right past a lot of the excellent boss fight details that elevate this series when you play the games more casually, like i do. i've always thought darkthorn was the best heartless boss in kh2, for example, but i don't think i could've explained why. watching this, though, i was nodding along like yes that's exactly it, even though i'd never like...put it into words before. it really is a mark in the column for kh's game design philosophy that you can enjoy this stuff as a casual player, but also be rewarded for looking deeper and peeling back some of the layers. for whatever can be said about the kudzu plot at work, there's no denying the fact that this is a series that is a lot of fun to discuss. i've been playing these games for literally twenty years and i'm STILL learning new things about them. love that. i also tend to try and swap around who i support on patreon close to the new year sooooo, a good time to throw my support your way. looking forward to what you have for 2022!
I’d just like to echo the comments on how great it is to see your channel grow; I know I’ve had a very fun time watching your videos and live streams over this year. It’s great to see such positive comments from people, and you’re clearly working really hard on your content. I would also like to secondarily second the people asking for a data boss ranking video - that would be sweet!
You made the right choice in picky Xemnas as the your favorite fight in KH2. The final mash triangle sess of the fight is so damn cool and I love how Dream Drop Distance worked it into its opening cinematic, also Dream Drops opening is my favorite.
When you said Cerberus seems smaller, I thought about the different camera field of view in KH2 making it look smaller. 48:35 When looking closer with a slowdown, he might have been slapping him.
I watched this legit all the way through once and I love to watch it again (5ish more times) while I am doing something else or going to sleep. Haha I guess you have a very soothing voice. Your videos are awesome. I cant wait to see your KH2 data battle ranking list.
We've come full circle. I randomly got your first boss video in my recommendations after watching some KH stuff and have been subscribed since then. Nice to see a second!
I still remember my first time going to fight the lingering will on proud at level 39, no second chance, I got one shot when he just changed his keyblade into the rocket launcher. Not the ball he shoots out. The animation one shot me. It was hilarious.
I really enjoy your writing style. You have a great way of structuring really long thoughts in a way that prevents the listener from getting lost halfway through. Great work Pat
The fact there isn't a checkpoint after the 2nd Demyx fight is just cruel. The next fights with the FF cast on lv1 Critical are horrifying when pretty much everything oneshots you and you are painfully aware that any random BS from offscreen will send you back to the Demyx hell.
@@Ventus2077 That's not how KH is designed though. KH2 is extremely generous with its checkpoints except for this one single spot in the game. I believe it's just a weird quirk with how the checkpoint system works in the game, since you never get control of Sora between Demyx and the next fight. It's not a thing you even notice on a casual playthrough since the fights are easy if you aren't on lv1.
I adore the reaction commands to the Dark Thorn and Stormrider! It feels straight out of Devil May Cry and any other character action game! Maybe it could take another year until we get a KH3 Boss Ranking? Probably not...
Hahaha just took a swig of beer and then you said the Hades masseuse line - spat beer from my mouth and nose zzz. Great video Pat and thanks for another great year - looking forward to 2022
36:04 to go on about the Experiment thing, it is "heartless"....literally, it has no heart, its whole thing was trying to gain a heart from presents so it can feel joy and emotion. The doc mentioned how Sally DOES have a heart, but he didn't put one in her little brother.....kinda sad, when you think about it. lts only act of violence was cleaning the docs clock, and he didn't even kill him, he knocked him out then went to steal presents to try to learn how to feel. To my recollection, aside from the boss fight, which could be seen as it DEFENDING ITSELF, and it taking Fink by surprise, l don't think it hurt anyone....
I think the best example of the heartless becoming less intimidating is the first visit to the tower. Literally starts the shadow fight with the cheerful music like here we go again beating these lil guys
Something of note about the High Climb/Needle Dive RC that further emphasizes your point about being rewarded for thinking outside the box, is that you have to disable Sark normally at least once before he starts putting up that wall. If you try to bait him into doing it before you've knocked him out once, he'll just throw his massive identity disc at you and you have to jump over it.
Y'know, I thought I was losing my mind because I was trying to get the footage for it and he refused to do it until I knocked him out which makes the whole thing even more obscure
@@RegularPat Y'know, thinking about it some more, it's probably less obscure than you or I were first thinking. First time players who don't know how the fight works, once they've used the Delete reaction command once, are probably going to chase down that gap they made in the MCP's barrier, which will likely put Sora a considerable distance from Sark when he's restored. Those new players might stop paying attention to Sark after knocking him out, and if so they probably won't realize that the MCP's line 'I will repair your data' was addressing Sark. Adding to that, if you're far enough away you won't hear the responding 'Thank you, sir'. Considering all the MCP's other in-battle dialogue are taunts toward Sora, new players might hear 'I will repair your data' and think it's more of the MCP's 'programs have advanced beyond users' rhetoric; sort of a twisted, psychopathic 'let me help you' kinda taunt. But even without it, just the fact that new players are probably going to chase down the hole they made, it's fairly likely they're going to trigger the wall by accident. It seems more like a shortcut that's designed to be run into and discover by chance. Heck, the closest thing I've ever seen to it being obscure was when I saw a first time player trigger the wall, and turn around and run back to hit Sark some more.
Michael can actually show up during the first Armored Xemnas fight to save you if you die, so he does get implemented. Kairi’s the only one who misses out.
KH2 was my first KH game somehow as a kid and I was in Love with his character design, I even had my fingers wrapped in the black and white tape just like his. Roxas Ftw!
I just found your channel and after watching the entire KH1 and KH2 boss ranking vids I'm subbed. This is some amazing work and you really deserve more attention for the quality of these videos. IU don't even like KH that much and I've having a blast.
I don't typically overexamine those kind of failstate conditions in KH, because most of them are explicitly "the story cannot continue as it should if Sora fails here." Like, I don't want to play a story where Timon and Pumbaa are dead. I don't want to play a story where Luxord won the race so he can't give us the information we need to progress the story, I don't want to play a story where the nobodies have broken through the Bailey gate and are terrorizing the town, or a story where Mulan doesn't impress Shang and gets kicked out of the army, or where Shan-Yu breaks through the gate and kills the Emperor. The difference is that each of those failstates make sense. But the Demyx one doesn't. They needed to show us why we failed for it to feel like the death was our fault. And it's made even more prevalent because the fight is such a difficulty spike; Demyx is both annoying but also the way to lose the fight feels unfair. Even against Barbossa, where losing Jack is an alternate fail state, I feel like there's a justification there where they don't want to show KO'd Zombie Jack before he has to do his special plan against Barbossa. Like what happens to the Pirates when you kill them (they basically dissassemble right?) they don't want to break their own rules by not having that happen to Jack. I think this one is still barely defensible, but you can still piece together some justification from the story, unlike the literal nothing you get from Demyx.
48:58 loved this lil story as the younger sister i would always ask my older brother to help me in video games growing up, kingdom hearts was one of the first solo games i finished without the help of my brother and funny thing is that when he finally tried KH he needed MY help it honestly felt nice to show my old bro how its done. 👏
I played the game on Level 1 recently and just wanna say, Oogie Boogie turned me into a genocidal madman. Him and Xaldin's final phase almost made me regret even doing the challenge. Then I beat Sephiroth and my ego swelled.

I used to see it as when you run out of time the water just piled up on sora drowning him but I like your theory more
That makes a lot of sense
That explains the stupid short 10 second frame if he does it mid second battle
he danced water danced

Apparently if you don't beat the water clones, Sora gets overwhelmed and Demyx gets away. So it's the equivalent of throwing a bucket of water on someone and running around the corner.
Yeah that about sums up demyx’s character honestly, just tape a blonde mullet to the bucket
"...shoot a beam through Xemnas in a move that is usually reserved for keyholes, but clearly works on assholes too."
Well, I'm pretty sure this is the best line that has ever appeared in anything even tangentially related to Kingdom Hearts. Pack it in everybody, the discourse has peaked, it's all downhill from here.
😂😂😂
What about sora saying “your stupid” to riku
We literally never see Keyholes utilized after KH1.
It’s not until Riku gets hit that Sora unleashes an assault that Xemnas can’t even defend against, which is really nice mid-fight storytelling.
the riku redemption is frickin real
They even went through the effort of giving him a key-less casting animation for that one single moment.
though he does share the animation with hooded xion, who can only cast magic iirc, it's still neat.
@@oathkeeperofoblivion972 yeah I vividly remember xion using magic before she gets the keyblade
I have an answer for the Demyx minigame-loss question if you're interested.
If Demyx wins his minigame:
(Encounter 1) Demyx succeeds in wasting Sora's time and escapes with the stone of Olympus.
I guess demyx doesn't use 2d textures for his clones to render a lot of them at once.
That makes a lot of sense. Wish we could’ve gotten a unique cutscene for failing the minigame, so the instant game-over doesn’t feel so out-of-place
Blizzard Lord and Volcano Lord got their titles by buying a square feet of land each in Scotland.
The only time in the game when a party member is canonically inmortal is the one when you loose if they die.
I think Jack isn't actually cursed until the end of the fight, when he gets shot but reveals that he's holding a piece of cursed gold. Like, he sneaks over and snags a piece while the cutscene is starting?
Idk I don't remember the offer offhand, it's been like a year since I last played.
@@SeisoYabai
Jack let himself be cursed before the fight, which is why Barbossa has Pete summon a Heartless to help him out
Still weird that letting Jack get knocked out is a lose-condition for that fight, considering numerous factors
1. Getting knocked out is not equivalent to dying
2. You can just use a potion on a knocked out party member to wake them up
3. And even if you don't they eventually wake up automatically
4. How does Jack getting knocked out benefit Barbossa to the point that Team Classic [as Melody of Memory calls 'em] goes "oh damn we lost"
The only explanation I can entertain is that Barbossa can take the chance from Jack being knocked out to take the medallion he has back and forcing Will to undo the curse
Dear god I am not looking forward to that fight
The obvious reason Mr Smee wasn't a super boss in BBS was because they already slapped mysterious figure in there and didn't want to make the player rage anymore they already were going to.
And then they added the Final Mix superbosses anyway.

Hahah body go *Boing!*
Good point, dude takes it like a champ
Roxas should be paralyzed after a fight like that, even if it’s all in his heart.
I literally just finished replaying KH2 for the first time since the original release, haha. How topical! I’m stuck by myself for the holidays, fighting boredom and a bit of loneliness, so a nice, feature-length RP video is just the ticket.
I felt that man it sucks being alone on the holidays I didn't have much to do either

Oooh interesting. I kinda figured as much but the game never makes it explicitly clear, like you said
They should have done an animation for that- maybe if time runs out, Demyx drops a tidal wave on the arena like Leviathan in FF7
I cant believe Nomura deprived us of Demyx's ultimate move, Zettagyser, to counter the power of Donald and his Zettaflare.
@@TheKeyblader133 that would actually be so sick and I wish the devs did more stuff like that… KH’s magic systems don’t really matter that much imo so why not just start giving characters some crazy spells? Two years later, you still haven't done the Data Battles.
@@RegularPat It's a beautiful instance of serendipity in that case!

Xemnas has one of my favorite combat styles ever. The lightsabers, the spins and flips, the thorns, the barriers and orbs, and of course the lasers and the laser dome, it's just all so stylish.
Just truly over the top. Which I feel was the whole point of the nobodies.
You have no idea how excited I was when I saw the run time on this video. I've been wanting longer ones forever
"wolf bear buffalo monster in a cape"

Would definitely love to see a data boss discussion!
Yes, same here!
Yeah, me too.
I think the implication with the Demyx fight is that if Sora fails to kill the clones in time, Demyx just spawns more of them and Sora can't keep up.
maybe he uses them to unleash some sort of unblockable tide spell that drowns the whole party
What if he just ran-
He probably just runs away pretty standard for him.
Wasn't that Marluxia who said that?
48:56 i brought my ps3 over to a friends house years ago, and he had 2 single digit age sisters. We were talking turns fighting Larxene's absent silhouette in critical mode. One of his sisters asked if she could try so i said sure. This 9yo ended up fumbling the menu into using master form and proceeded to button mash Larxene to death by pure chance. She knew how to attack and use the menu to heal herself, that was it. She just kept spamming reflect trying to heal and Larxene just happened to go down one hit before she did.
17:27 “Cujo, or Cujaga given the circumstances…”

I compared Cerberus's KH1 model with his KH2 model and they are the exact same 3d model. There are three reasons I believe for why Cerberus feels smaller in KH2:
While in KH2 Sora can easily jump over his body without needing any additional abilities.
this blows my mind. still think he was shrink rayed. it is simply impossible
Comparing Sora's KH1 model to his KH2 model in Dream Drop Distance: he like doubles in height
I love Axel 2. The 13th struggle is SUCH a good track, and Roxas feels so good to play here.
"Isn't it weird that Hades is Hercules' uncle?"
Not as weird as how, since Triton is the Greek god of the seas and the son of Poseidon, Ariel's father is Hercules' cousin.
God damn that Fuchs with brain and I'm a Greek mythology nerd
Make Xigbar responsible so he could actually show up for the first visit, then you could focus more on him the second round
Also, as someone who first played KH2 on release when I was 15 and had been playing games for a decade… the Twilight Thorn fight’s cutscenes were still mind blowing

Every time you have to stop a helpless npc not get killed in a video game, I’m calling it a don’t let Meg be murdered bar

Oh yeah, she certainly gets treated by a lot of players gravities too.
After all these years, I never knew you could lose the Barbossa fight if Jack dies, that's insane

I think you have the wrong time stamp buddy
@@alexandermorgan5958I would argue that would be Marluxia
I have no idea what the “My Own Worst Enemy” joke was, but the second time you brought it up was the biggest laugh I got in this video 😳
I remember waiting for KH2 after beating both stories in CoM, so I had that same reaction when I saw Axel, like "YOOOOOOO HE'S BACK! HOLY HECK!"
Pat! Thanks for putting so much time and effort into this video, especially around the holidays! So excited to watch this.
it's been great to watch your channel grow over this year, and this video definitely feels like a culmination of 2021 for you. really appreciate the hard work on it around the holidays because PHEW that runtime, but every second was worth it. part of the reason kh2 has such an indelible impact is that final boss battle with xemnas. for all the meh fights sprinkled throughout as you illustrated with the lower rankings, xemnas' last stand has you walking away every time feeling satisfied on both a gameplay and story level in a way i'm not sure the series will ever be able to top with a final boss. i'd love to see them do it, but man. it's a tough act to follow.
personally i probably would've put roxas as number one, but i'll admit that's mostly because i value a boss fight that can make me misty eyed. (on that note, i'm not holding my breath for a days boss ranking but i mean. can number one be anything but xion? her theme alone gets me in my feelings.)
overall, i love watching your videos like this because it's nice to see all these battles and their game design elements broken down and analyzed. i think it can be easy to fly right past a lot of the excellent boss fight details that elevate this series when you play the games more casually, like i do. i've always thought darkthorn was the best heartless boss in kh2, for example, but i don't think i could've explained why. watching this, though, i was nodding along like yes that's exactly it, even though i'd never like...put it into words before.
it really is a mark in the column for kh's game design philosophy that you can enjoy this stuff as a casual player, but also be rewarded for looking deeper and peeling back some of the layers. for whatever can be said about the kudzu plot at work, there's no denying the fact that this is a series that is a lot of fun to discuss. i've been playing these games for literally twenty years and i'm STILL learning new things about them. love that.
i also tend to try and swap around who i support on patreon close to the new year sooooo, a good time to throw my support your way. looking forward to what you have for 2022!

You made the right choice in picky Xemnas as the your favorite fight in KH2. The final mash triangle sess of the fight is so damn cool and I love how Dream Drop Distance worked it into its opening cinematic, also Dream Drops opening is my favorite.
The KH1 boss ranking was how i found your channel so this really lifted my mood considering personal problems are happening rn

Not cruel but more challenging, similar to many RPG classic games that take you right into the main menu but only an easier version for the series.
Great video. I, too, have had a story arc.
ITS 3 AM MAN. I’m gonna watch this in the morning for sure. Also, cool that all the (2) boss rankings have meme thumbnails. 👍
I adore the reaction commands to the Dark Thorn and Stormrider! It feels straight out of Devil May Cry and any other character action game! Maybe it could take another year until we get a KH3 Boss Ranking? Probably not...

thank you for sticking around
Dance Water Dance will haunt my dreams the boss fight was the biggest roadblock for me (the second fight before the 1000 heartless)
You have Somebodies, Nobodies, Heartless, Unversed, Dream Eaters, Nightmares, etc.
Then you have Regular Pat, who is Sleepless
I'm a sucker for Kingdom Hearts rankings so an absent silhouette/data battle ranking would be fun.
55:40 In Xigbar's defense, that wasn't the exact same place, he just tuck himself inside a hole where it's SUPPOSED to be difficult to be found.
So the KH3 ranking comes in 14 years? 👉👈
Y'know, I thought I was losing my mind because I was trying to get the footage for it and he refused to do it until I knocked him out
which makes the whole thing even more obscure
Heck, the closest thing I've ever seen to it being obscure was when I saw a first time player trigger the wall, and turn around and run back to hit Sark some more.
this video is funny af. some clever writing in here 🤣
The fuck are you doing here god damn
Michael can actually show up during the first Armored Xemnas fight to save you if you die, so he does get implemented. Kairi’s the only one who misses out.
The Other Promise is easily one of my video game scores of all time. Makes every Roxas appearance all the more epic.
All excellent points, I'm glad someone else finds the whole thing sorta weird lol
thank you for this christmas present pat
I played the game on Level 1 recently and just wanna say, Oogie Boogie turned me into a genocidal madman. Him and Xaldin's final phase almost made me regret even doing the challenge.
Then I beat Sephiroth and my ego swelled.
I love the thumbnail
He didn't mention the Barbossa reaction commands where sora steps on his sword and he pulls a gun giving you half a second to kick him on the face pretty damn cool
Fun tip for Xigbar’s ultimate, literally just run in a perfect circle around the arena and nothing will touch you
I died about 10 Times,Then i figured this out And Then beat him First try
