A 1972 250C that my father gave to my mother as part of a divorce settlement became my first Mercedes. Loved that car. Have owned 40+ Mercedes since then. Your video brought back great memories. If you come across a nice one let me know. Thanks! Greg

I remember a friend of my Dad who had a Merc's collection from the early mid 1950's such as the 170,190 and a 220. They left an impression on me as a boy as this car did in the late 70's early 80's....

FYI... I don't know how many were made, but my shop serviced a 1973 280C that had a 3.5 litre V8 and a manual transmission, all from the factory. The car had the proper stickers for US consumption...which was always questionable to me. The owner claimed the car was a present to long-time Mercedes importer Max Hoffman, who didn't care for the manual transmission and sold it. I don't know how true THAT was, but the car wqas very real. And it was wonderful to drive. I tried seriously to buy it, but the owner wasn't interested. I've always wondered what happened to it. I spent many years in the auto dealer business, and I know manufacturers make all manner of one-offs...but they never escape. This one did. I always enjoy your videos; keep up the good work.

Having owned a 1970 since new I enjoyed driving the 250C. It was unique in appearance, comfortable to drive, and it had an ice cold air conditioner and the electric windows were nice. When unleaded fuel was mandated in the U.S. in 1973. The valve sleeves had to be replaced because they were designed for leaded fuel. So, oil would drip into the combustion chambers causing a cloud of white smoke when starting it cold. Also, dry rot was a serious problem prompting the replacement of door gaskets, hoses, CV joint boots, and more. Also, I knew then what I know now I would have used rubber dressings on the all rubber. As it aged there were some area of concern with rust. A good rust proofing would have prevented that. The paint was blue, but non-metallic. I was always waxing the finish. Other than that, I loved that car.

Beautiful color combo. I agree that the W114 coupe is undervalued and under-appreciated. It’s a beautiful car but I feel that the c pillar is a bit too heavy. The W113 and W111 coupe have a more delicate and elegant C pillar in my opinion. But anyway, this car with this color combo and a manual transmission would be high up there in the ranks as my dream car.

For posterity, I’d like to state that Leo Levine, told me, in person, and in detail, that Erich Waxenberger put a 4.5L M117 in a W114 coupe back in the early 70s. He also told me that he had seen him driving it around often. There were many odd and interesting one-offs from MB engineers in the 60s and 70s, such as the white-on-blue 300SE 6.3 coupe, and that is why I believe Erich’s 4.5L W114 coupe actually existed.

In '71 (I was 11) my mom bought my father a 250C. I remember going to Star Motors on Kedzie Ave in Chicago, the metallic blue coupe was in the small showroom with the red bow around it. My mom had previously asked why he wanted a German car, she had been needling him about the unreliable Mercedes he was driving "why don't you just buy an American car". Mom always knew he wanted a Mercedes coupe. My dad took one look at the 250C and said 'no I don't want it". Dad wasn't normally a stubborn man. It was a very quiet ride home with my mom in her Chrysler with my father following in his rusty '62 220SE. We got home and dad wasn't home for another 2 hours. When he did get home it was in a new green Olds Cutlass. Dinner time that evening was very quiet. He had that Olds for 2 years before trading in in for a 220D. He eventually did get the coupe he wanted in '85, the last 300CD at any dealer in Chicago.

Pierre, I am a new subscriber. I came across your channel because I just recently purchased a 1972 250 6 cylinder Mercedes sedan. I paid under 4K,it has 54k original miles and the original owner kept impeccable records. He logged every time he filled if with fuel, where he purchased the fuel and how much per gallon including other repairs up to 47k miles. The second owner unfortunate ly did not do as well but keep receipts of all the work done with going over the receipts included radiator flush, oil changes, carburetor cleaning etc. It has a wonder chocolate interior with no tears of any kind. The head liner is coming apart around the rear wind and front dash needs repair as dies the wood grain. Overall the vehicle seems sound and runs. The question I have is I am slightly worried that while driving it, it started to stall and lose power. I was able to make it home but could not get it into my garage due to lack of power and my drive way has an upward slope. The seller told me it has sat for some time with the same gas in the tank. Could my problem be bad gas? I haven't driven it but periodically start it up and it idles just fine but the smell is bad. I am planning on having it flushed and then doing the repairs because I plan on keeping it. It also has minor rust behind the right wheel well but it is only surface rust. I you opinion did I make a good purchase or do you think I wasted money? I feel like I did ok but the unknown is somewhat stressful. Your opinion would be greatly appreciated.

you need to check your gas tank for rust, your fuel filter for rust and your fuel pump for delivery. it sounds like the tank might be contaminated.

I saw your video about old versus new Mercedes. Definitely struck a cord! Last time we spoke by phone, I had acquired a Eurospec W116 350SE. I added a 2002 R170 SLK320 6-speed three years ago. Two months ago I bought a Eurospec 1992 C124 300CE-24 Sportline with 5-speed Gretrag. Living the dream. Interesting Mercedes chronology: W116 to R170. Very different philosophies!

I think in a lot of way these are the car which best represents Mercedes, traditionally there's 2 types of Mercedes enthusiast, those who are into the simplistic robustness of something like a 240d and those who are into the beauty of the hand build mercedes like a pagoda or a 300se coupe. Where as these have a good compromise of both!

the parking brake main cable has a yoke in the driveshaft tunnel that it attaches to. The yoke also holds the two rear cables. there is a spring that goes from the yoke to a bracket in the rear of the tunnel that keeps the whole mechanism tight.

Very nice Pierre. I think a 114 coupe will be my next purchase. Do you prefer the 250C to the 280C? I agree, these are very under valued. Also, it always seems to me that the front bumpers on the coupes don't quite sit right, like they're upturned slightly. Am I seeing things? Is that how they're supposed to be? The bumper on my 114 sedan seems to be sitting more level. Good job again. Keep up the good work.

    • @mercedesclassicswithpierre1753
      @mercedesclassicswithpierre1753  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

John!!!!! the upturning bumper is likely on the later cars, and i think it is because of how the shocks mount into the bumper. If you want a 114 coupe, here is
my hierarchy of preferences: 1972-76 280ce "euro" with injection, followed by 1969-72 250ce euro, injection. After that, 1972-73 280c, unless it is Euro market, then any year is ok. then the Euro market or US 250c. After that, the 1974 280c, and then, last, the 1975-76 280c. they are all good cars, solid, dependable, but the late US cars are a matter of preference. Email me for more details Happy motoring!

Nice commentary on a beautiful car. My dad had a '71 Dodge Polara station wagon, rode like a boat. Lol! My maternal Gran in England had a little Fiat, ever loving piece of garbage. My paternal grandpa in England had a diesel Volvo in '84...that was an interesting car! I agree with you.
My maternal Gran's male friend had a '79 Lotus Espirit- he taught me to drive it- stick shift and all! It's funny how cars from our youth influence our car preferences now! Oh and yesterday I got to drive my brother in law's Corvette. It was nice, it rode like crap compared to my '80 450SL, but you can't zoom around like a speed demon like you can in that Vette. (Oh god that was fun!!!) Honestly, the Vette was nice, but I like the SL better. I guess it's what do you want out of your car.
We just gave our '99 Suburban to our 27 y.o. son. I'm trying to figure out what I can DD an let my SL rest a bit. I'm a homemaker with automotive training (1995) and I repair our cars when needed. I need something to drive for yard sales and shopping. Has to be Benz! Lol

Sadly nowadays, the race of having a car that does it all, ruins the entire experience, cars need to be sporstcars, limos, 0-60 fast, 0-100, look the same, sound the same, cars lose their magic!
Recently i drove the new 223 S class.. technology over technology, lights, screens, sensors .. but yet i felt like Mercedes are missing some key moments here also 😢 i wish they can take a look back and relearn how should a comfortable car feel like, the path to making a car into a supercomputer on wheels with LED lights made them forget a lot!

reminds me of a 250C that I sold to a 'friend', who warped the cylinder head after "cooking" the motor until it stopped running........

If you are going to present the interior design, please straighten out the steering wheel first! Otherwise, good video - except use a tripod....

Why is the camera man filming your torso and not filming your face whilst you speak

well...really until 85 on the 123. sorry for the error. I saw it as late as 76, on the w116/115, but it was a rare option.

The 250 CE and 280 CE were fast and no need for heavy V8 sacrificing handling...

parcelshelf looks weird, nothing like original.
neither was mine, i cut holes and fitted 6 speakers and the most powerful stereo system i could afford at the time into it.

The W114 does not have R107 underpinnings (aka platform). It is the R107 that has something from the earlier W114, and that is merely the front subframe and suspension. In regards to an M116 or M117 V8 engine, all that gets you is the ability to use factory R107 engine mount arms to mount the v8 atop the W114 subframe.
However that is not enough. The frames (and thus the engine bays) are different. I have tried it myself and can tell you that an M117 will not fit into a W114 without cutting sheet metal or making asthmatic exhaust manifolds. The engine bay is too narrow. Please do your homework.

Why do the Yanks insist on called a two-door car a "coop"?
