Wow seeing your work in the clay highlights your talent and abilities in a whole other way. I have just discovered your tutorials and am glad you referenced them in your recent blog post because they are a valuable resource I want to recall when a need arises. Thanks for sharing your process as well as your work.
Thank you!! I really needed this! I'm a theatre student and I'm trying to create my own expressive character masks to practice my craft but I've been having trouble with the paper mache part. Thank you for making this! Really helped me a lot! Though I do have a question, how do you make the inside of the mask smoother? Like how do you finish it off to wear it's for to wear? I might be over thinking it I don't know lol but thank you!!
This is a great question. I didn't talk about if very much in the book I wrote about masks, because I was thinking they would just be worn once. I just mentioned that you can use the foam strips that I think are used for children's bicycle helmets, to keep the paper mache mask away from the face. That helps for air circulation, keeps the moisture from your skin from making the paper mache damp. But for a theater situation I'd go a bit further. If you use the blue towels and paste like I do in the book, the inside is pretty smooth to start with. I would then seal the inside with a good varnish, and after that's dry apply felt to the inside of the mask. You still want to keep air moving to make it more comfortable to wear, so you might still want to use the foam strips, but the addition of the felt will make sure there's nothing to chafe against the face, and it will help keep the mask dry. For more ideas, see my book at amzn.to/2obUDmq
Hi there is it neccessary to always use the clay as a base or foundation for the shape of the mask? Do you have a video showing the process from start to finish?
You can make the form with any material you like. I happen to like the clay, but you could use crumpled foil or paper, if you put something over it to keep the paper mache from sticking. Here's a video showing how to make a paper mache mask over clay: th-cam.com/video/BBqBnrtAwUQ/w-d-xo.html
Very cool. I recently picked up some spray silicone from the automotive department at walmart to use as a mold release. I am going to try it today because of Halloween mostly. I have a great skull ice cube tray that likes to hold onto the resin. I am hoping the spray silicone will help and I won't have to work at it for 4 hours or so just to get the skull out. :P I would love to see a video showing how you did that face in the clay even if you had to speed it up or break it into bite size parts. :D - Heidi
I love your videos. You've inspired me to start doing crafts after a long time. Thank you for these videos. I am excited to get my supplies and try all your techniques. 😬🤗
No, not much anyway. I don't do it that way anymore, though - it's easier to just spray the wet clay with Krylon clear and let it dry. It does get stuck to the clay, but the clay can still be used. The paper mache gets into it, too, but most of it can be scraped out so you can save the clay. For more simple shapes I put a sheet of plastic wrap over the clay, and then I can save all of it.
Do you mean what kind of cind of clay to use for the form? I'd use a soft oil-based clay. The clay will be distorted when you pull off the first dry paper mache mask, but you can repair it and put another paper mache mask over the top of it. You'll need to start today, obviously, because paper mache takes time to dry. It always takes longer than you think it will.
Hi Jonni!! Ok so I'm thinking of testing an idea out, let's see what you think? I love my creatures to be hollow. So I like to make the basic shape, cover it with cling film and then use the plaster cloth & basically do like you did with the rhino & cut it in half then use that shell, however I was thinking, do you think that instead of using newspaper balled up on normal armatures I wonder if I can use lots of small balloons or water bombs and tape them into my basic shape, then a layer of paper mache, then poke needles through to pop them & shake them out of a leg hole after? Just wondered if you had tried anything similar & how it went? :) it might not work at all but I see myself testing it out!
+tanya simone Gosh - is sounds feasible, but I've never tried it. I seem to remember Dan Reeder making some egg-shaped crumpled paper forms, which he uses over and over again by cutting his paper mache and putting it back together. and then (I may be making this up) I think he uses the hollow balls to fill the insides of his larger sculptures. They would be strong when everything is together, sort of like honeycombs. What you're describing would be similar. If you try it, I would love to know how your experiment turns out.
I haven't tried that. If you just need it to be really hard and stiff you could use a thin layer of paper mache clay. But if you need it to be both stiff and waterproof, the resin would probably work - but I've never tried it.
I know this video is y'know 5 years old and all, but, what about covering the form with cling film? I've seen a couple of mask makers on youtube do it that way.
Yes, that works really well. Especially if the clay is still wet. I started doing that recently, and it's a big improvement - no clay stuck to the inside of the mask. Thanks for the tip! 😀
Could you tell me what type of paper you used? I really want to make professional/traditional style Venetian masks and they tend to use Carta Lana paper which is an expensive wool paper. I'm trying to find a cheaper alternative because newspaper always seems to leave wrinkles and such, where as Venetian Masks are always so smooth. Thanks for the advice!
I use blue Scott shop towels for my masks. It doesn't work with flour and water paste, but my plaster and glue paste, and the drywall joint compound and glue paste both work well. It isn't a traditional Venetian technique, though. You can see more about how I make masks in my book, here: amzn.to/2obUDmq
Love it! New subscriber, and I am totally with you on adding a little orange hair for the angry man. Have been trying to figure out how to make a trump mask, and you just supplied the answer. However, I believe the little puckered angry mouth needs to be a bit smaller. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.
My goodness!! First of all..thank you thank you thank for sharing allll your great tips and tricks! Second...that mask! I need to know more about it! I love that face! Please show us how you make faces like that!!
Hi Jonni, if I just wanted to leave it has a clay mask and not papier mache over the top, do you just let the clay dry and then lift off the form? Do you need to apply anything to the hard form so the clay will come off easily?
I used WED clay, which is basically a pottery clay that isn't intended to be fired. It is not intended for permanent use, and it will probably crack as it dries. You might want to use an air dry clay instead, although I've never done that myself and I can't give you any tips on how to do it. If you put petroleum jelly on the form it might help you get the dried clay off the form, but it will be fragile.
The blue paper is Scott Shop Towels. They aren't available in most coountries, but you might have a similar product where you live. you find shop towels at the DIY store.
+Judy Rauenzahn I mold the eyes with the paper mache, and paint them. You can buy glass eyes at a taxidermy store, but I haven't done that. I'm too cheap.
Hello I am researching diy paper Clay's and wanted to ask is it ok to use Dap Plaster of Paris in the mix with the glue and flour and the starch and other ingredients??
You came to mind the other day when I was watching reruns of NCIS in Season 2 Ep.13. It was called The Meat Puzzle and there was one part it had a panda, leopard and other animals and a lot more in the background and I was thinking I wonder if they were made by you. They were so well done. The panda had fur but the others looked like really good Paper Mache.
BTW...WED stand for Walter Elias Disney. It was developed for the Disney Corporation. They sculpted their animatronic characters with it. Rides like Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean
Thanks, Scot. You're absolutely right, and now I know Walt's middle name! Just for fun, watch these sculptors using WED clay for monsters: th-cam.com/video/tTNceW0y7FY/w-d-xo.html
Hi, do you know if any other type of Turtle Wax would work as well as this one? That particular one is very expensive and hard to find seeing as I'm from the UK..
I don't - but since this video I've been told that you can spray the wet clay with Clear Coat, and it will seal in the moisture. I think they were talking about the Krylon brand. Check and see if they sell it in the UK.
I used the blue shop towels and the "paste" recipe that is really just Elmer's Glue-All and premixed drywall joint compound. I use it now instead of the plaster and glue paste that I used for all of the masks in my book, just because it hardens just as well but doesn't get hard in the bowl. I have not had much luck using flour and water paste with the blue shop towels.
I'm trying to do an art project for school, and I made a snake head out of clay, but I didn't know modeling clay doesn't harden, can I just put paper mache over it and leave it like that or, would I have a better chance doing something else. Please reply as fast as possible .
You'll need to remove the modeling clay. The oil will seep through the paper and stain the painted surface. You can remove the clay after the paper mache is totally dry by cutting the paper mache in half with a craft knife, pulling the paper mache off the clay, and then putting the paper mache back together again with a few strips of paper and paste. Good luck with it!
hi! I found you a little while ago and I am already a huge fan :) I was wondering what kinds of clays are best for armature. I've seen air dry and model magic type clay to add features to a mask sometimes, but can you use it as a armature if you wanted? also I picked up a blank primed face mask recently and I wondered if you had any experience with that either or had seen it used? to a novice it seemed like potentially a good base to build on for a mask. I'm trying to make a mantis mask/helmet (like your hornet one but I think I want it to come down a little further) and I don't really understand what material paper mache sticks to and what materials it can release from. I heard Vaseline can help. any tips?
Hi Elspeth. Is your face mask made with paper mache? If it is, new paper mache should stick to it. I like to use WED clay for an armature, but you can also use an oil-based clay. If you use an air-dry clay, be sure to use it as your armature while the clay is still wet. If it gets hard and you then add paper mache over it, it will be very difficult to get the dried paper mache off of the model. Did you see my video about making a mask over a clay model? I use plastic wrap between the clay and the paper mache - you can see it here: th-cam.com/video/BBqBnrtAwUQ/w-d-xo.html
tengo una pregunta cual es la mejor forma para reaalizar una figura simetrica, y no necesariamente rostro? por ejemplos una simetria de una hoja de Acanthus.
+Judi Calhoun I have thrown some powdered clay in with my paper mache clay recipe, although it didn't seem to be worth the effort. You can buy powdered clay at a pottery store.
Wow this is really cool! You definitely have skill to make these. I was wondering, do you take requests? I'm searching for someone to make a mask for me and I think you could do it quite easily looking at some of your previous work.
+Mr. Go-in Thank you for your inquiry, but no - I don't do commissions. You might be able to find someone at a local art school who could watch my videos or read my book about making masks, and then make one for you. They can find my mask book here: goo.gl/McFp8L

Sorry, no. I write books and make videos showing other people how to make their own masks. If you don't want to try it, maybe someone you know could do it for you.
Wouldn't it be simpler just to use a styrofoam head and build a PC/PP mask on it? I used a balloon one time to do this. It was a very crude mask. But it worked and that is what I was going for.
I'm not sure what you mean. Simpler than using a base made out of crumpled foil? Sure, if you happen to have a Styrofoam head, and the nose isn't too big. If it worked for your project, that's great. The foil works, too. :)
No I meant instead of basically making 2 masks, the sculpted clay "mask" and then the PM masks on top of that. Thanks for replying. I finally got a poster to reply ! :-)

Hi I am a fake taxidermist from India and I make artificial animals from synthetic fur and maniquin from papermarche now my papermarche is being eaten up by insects looks like they are feeding on the flour please help
Do insects like fenugreek? The Papier Mache Manual by Paul Dass has a recipe for paper mache using fenugreek, and he was writing for an Indian audience. In my local area we don't happen to have any insects that like paper mache, but in Southern areas of our country it is a problem. You could also try Elmer's Art Paste, which is made with Methyl Cellulose, and the insects might not like it. You can find the book I mentioned here: amzn.to/2sDqXyv
You are my go to for paper mache art, love your channel and your work.
I’m a painter and have only made small paper clay characters, human faces are new to me.

What about wax based clays? Will Paper Mache come off that if a thin coat of vaseline is applied first?
Thanks

Yes, I've used it with Monster Clay, and it will come off if you use a release.
Ooh cool, I’ll have to watch this!
I want to make it paper mache with eyes and have a plastic spider exiting the mouth
thank you so much. one of the most inspiring video over in u tube
Gosh - thanks.
what kind of paper do you use. i never saw that kind of blue paper.does it have a name?

I don't - but since this video I've been told that you can spray the wet clay with Clear Coat, and it will seal in the moisture. I think they were talking about the Krylon brand. Check and see if they sell it in the UK.
Instead of Vaseline…would cooking spray work? It sure would be a lot easier
Is this wearable like for halloween or theathre or does the clay break easily?
The shop towel mache can be worn. It won't break easily.
Hey jonni is that the flour and water mixture
I used the blue shop towels and the "paste" recipe that is really just Elmer's Glue-All and premixed drywall joint compound. One way is to look at it in a mirror, and another way is to take a photo and look a that instead of your sculpture.
You mentioned in one of your videos a powder you used in making the clay. Can you tell me what it was and where you purchased it?
+Judi Calhoun I have thrown some powdered clay in with my paper mache clay recipe, although it didn't seem to be worth the effort. You can buy powdered clay at a pottery store.
This was very informational thank you for sharing this.

Damn copyrights! Grrrrrrrrr! Lol. ;) Open source......
do you think cold wax for cold wax painting would work? ie Gambin cold wax medium or something equivalent?
I don't know. It seems like an expensive choice, just for a release. Is that what you're thinking of using it for?
Awesome clay sculpture so much expression
were able to reuse the green clay?
+Chad Goings Yes. But I did scrape off the wax, although I'm not sure I needed to.
Thank you for this great insight,, do you sell your masks?,, i would love the angry guy face,, for a mask/drama workshop, tom,

You can find the book I mentioned here: amzn.to/2sDqXyv
looks like Chucky
