Great review! You and ACG are the reviews that I actually pay attention to and look forward to now. I love my Sirius x and it runs great but I bought a legion go and that's my addiction now when it comes to gaming I would like to see maybe you incorporate the Asus Rog Ally or anything with the Z1 extreme in it you know into your reviews somehow that would be great. You know by compatibility how it runs. You know if you can run a smooth 60 or not just because the Z1 extreme is much more powerful than the steam deck so I would like to see how that compares. But yeah I'm glad that it runs great. I was excited about this game. Reminds me of a smaller version of the Witcher you know in the sense the way you're banishing goes like and you're doing with your three, even though you also do monsters in that game. But still glad to hear that it's got lots of side content and side stories and everything you know ties in at the end. I'm all for it the combat. I'm sure it'll get approved little by little with updates. It'll get better and better. Will it get perfect. Probably not. You know that's not really their strong suit. As you can tell with vampir that was the one thing where they struggled the most, but they're getting better at it. So I have hope that it'll be better in another game or two. They'll they'll be. You know successful and their combat will have gotten to the point where it's good using Google's auto voice dictation on the Pixel so if I didn't miss anything or any punctuations on my bad
I’ve recently been playing all of Don’t Nod’s works for the first time in anticipation of this game so I’m very happy that the story and atmosphere seem to be very solid!
Fair review. I personally enjoyed the combat later in the game and it was varied enough for me, but yes, it is the weakest part. I think you can miss additional information about the haunting cases, but you always get the most important information. I also was fine with that. The story is what carries the game and as I am mostly playing games for that, it is very much recommended from my side.
Never played a bad Don't Nod game, their games might not be blockbusters but they always bring something interesting to the table. Also, most of their releases are new IPs which is commendable.
The first Life is Strange is hands down in my top 5 games of all time. Very few games actually hit me in an emotional way. But the climax of Chapter 2, on the roof, I remember distinctly having anxiety stress in my stomach. You know that burning acid feeling you get when you get anxious about something? That hit me leading up to that scene. And they set it up so well too. For me, I love most games I play, but I can't really consider them my personal GOATs unless I feel a genuine emotional reaction to them. And LiS 1 definitely hit me in the feels. Love that game. They also made the one vampire protagonist game that I actually enjoyed playing, as I really hate the vampire genre as a whole. But their Vampyr actually was set up in a way that I could enjoy playing. So yeah when I saw the trailers for this, I was very interested.
@@DoomsdayMayBeOkay Rmember Me was done by DontNod? Didn't know that. That one didn't really hit any vibes for me so it kind of just flew past my radar. Might have to check it out.
We must live in different worlds. I haven't met a single Don't Nod game that I enjoyed. They are barely video games. I feel like the writers wanted to work in TV or movies but landed at a video game studio instead.
My initial comment reflected the more tepid nature of my immediate response to this game. That said, I couldn’t really get it out of my head after initially watching your review. I rewatched your review recently and made the decision to get the game. Having a lot of fun with it so far, so I just wanted you to know that you’re the reason I ultimately gave it a shot. Thanks for all you do, best reviews on the platform imo.
Seems pretty unique even for the dontnod standards. Glad to see you got a review copy, even if our particular taste is not the same for games, we overlap a ton and you’re very thorough with your work. Very few people try to do the background check, truly immerse themselves in the mechanics of games and progression systems and finally be wide enough to have a balanced review. You’re one of the best at what you do, you treat it as a job with utmost professionalism. Great review.
From what you are describing, the decisions in this game seem to be the "Good or Bad" kind of decisions. You know the right choice, and it's up to you if you want to go the good path or the bad one.
I love this game so far. I'm at the part just after you get the rifle. Their relationship feels so natural, the choice system is so deep and leaves u conflicted like real life😢.The combat really opens up when u get the gun, switching between characters in combat and the feeling of traveling with a companion done very well.
Not the whole time. There is a point where that starts to happen more but you can find two in game reasons for that, one via a haunting and the other via lore. Essentially ghosts lose their humanity the longer they are around before becoming specters. I will say it can be a bit gratingbut ymmv
@@lastking3185Don't fall for the misogynist propaganda that goes around in certain gamer circles these days. I played through the game and everything feels natural. There is a certain part where the circumstances make them bicker at each other more.
You also have to keep in mind that Red is technically the reason Antea dies in the beginning of the game (whether he was influenced or not is up for debate) , so she's got a pretty valid reason to be mad at him. Mostly the banter between them feels organic to how a long time couple will often snipe at each other with little jabs that aren't meant to be truly hostile
Really interesting, One of the things I found the most interesting about the game was the Combat, especially on the harder difficulties. While I did not care at all about the side hauntings or optional Content. It's interesting how differently you felt about the different aspects of this game, but arrived at the same conclusion.
I thought the combat was ok in Vampyr, the problem being that it was hard to avoid during the sidequest backtracking so there was too much of it. And a certain boss fight. Being a paranormal investigator but the game not letting you fail at it is very Witcher 3 (minus a few sidequests maybe) : a shame, but probably a necessary compromise to get a bigger audience.
Started this recently - can't play very often so my progress is slow and I have to choose what I decide to play wisely. It was a risk starting a game I've never heard of.. Antea has died and I just reunited with her spirit. I'm absolutely loving it and I'm glad I chose this game! 👍
By what you say about the game structure, and also by the flavor of its 3rd person action game play, it seems like this game took clear inspiration from the rebooted God of War games' combat and exploration. That being the case, a combat which isn't much good, and low enemies' variety over that, are pretty bad things. But there's the atmosphere and the story, which were already very interesting to me since the trailers. And there's the Vampyr related choice/consequence structure, and possibly other similarities in how side content is presented. Seems a game worth playing (I'll wait to buy at a later time, as my usual). Thanks for your videos!
Can't wait to dive into this after my WoW raid. I really loved majority of the games that Don't Nod released, especially Life is Strange and Vampyr. Thanks for the review Mort!
Thank you. I may have missed this, but I would like you to give a run time for your games, even if it is approximate. You may have done this; I missed them, but if not, I think it is relevant information to add to reviews.
I bought this on your recommendation. I agree about the combat and enemies, the story and atmosphere way more than make up for it. The voice acting is believable and the music was great for the setting. As it is an action adventure game I didn’t expect it to have amazing combat but rather a focus on story. We need more of this in gaming, a reason to care about what you are investing time into. Most games don’t suck me in, this one has. Another action adventure game that amazed me was Star Trek Resurgence. I cared about the characters, not about how many enemies I killed in one shot. I am finding this game refreshing, sometimes something simple but engaging is what we need. Not every game needs to be a struggle or grind, but they do need to be fun. Fun has been the missing ingredient for the last few years imo, well from AAA anyways.
I love this amazing game! It has a deep well written (disturbing and spooky) main story-line with intriguing and interesting side quests; the playing characters Red and Antea are brilliantly voice acted and wonderfully animated, as are the non-playing characters; the world building and design is excellent with beautiful graphics, great traversal mechanics and fantastic exploration; the combat is both dynamic and fun; the music and sound effects are truly haunting and atmospheric; and finally there are multiple endings which are all very satisfying. This truly is a great game that deserves to be played and appreciated. 👻
Wooo! Been keeping an eye on this one for quite awhile and good to hear it's a good game. Vampyr was also one of my favorites so I'll have to pick this one up, too.
Could you maybe add a quick chapter on game length? I realise it'll be a fairly specific time scale with you 100% and how you play the games but id enjoy and appreciate a rough idea of how much bang for my buck i should roughly expect. Amazing channel, similar interests in choices of games and even though this was an early access, free copy review I'm interested in giving this a go thanks to your review. Excellent work and my gratitude for taking the time to create your videos, legend!!
Thanks for the review. Game was not on my radar but with you and Wolffps posting positive reviews it is now. Especially if the atmosphere and exploration are good. That and story are more important to me than combat, especially since they have different difficulty options
I saw some stuff about it months ago but it didn't catch my attention. Though back then I didn't know it was done by Vampyr people. Now after seeing your review I'm excited to play it
This game feels like a spiritual successor to Vampyr and i couldn't be happier. Kudos to the devs for actually optimizing the game on UE5 unlike some devs enforcing upscaling (looking at you, Remnant 2).
Awesome, I was hoping it would be good so that's going to be my next game once I'm finished with Infinite Wealth (currently in Chapter 13 and trying to get my island to 5 stars because I don't want it to end!).
Cool looking game, I really liked Vampyr so its nice to see the developer continue to make creative stuff. I think $60 is a little too much for this game, $50 would've been more fitting, but I see myself playing it in the future
As always it's very nice to have your opinion. After 5 reviews I was still puzzled about this game. Combat is a very important part of an ARPG and here it's very clunky. Nevertheless I really love ghosts' stories and the period of the game. The 17th century in a dark fantasy setting in the middle of the witches' hunt and colonialism era is very attractive and extremely rare in video games. You said it: "It's worth a buy". OK then, I'll proceed. I expect combat to suck and I'm ready for that. It's only the journey that counts this time, the protagonists and their relationship. 🙂
This immediately made me think of a small bit from Critical Role campaign 2. Beau: I can punch ghosts now. Cad: Do ghosts need punching? Beau: Have you ever met a ghost that didn't need punching? Cad after deep thought: Yes. I have met a ghost that didn't need punching.
I love this game I think it’s a solid 8/10 I think a dlc and combat improvements would push it to a 9 arguably a 10 games like this belong in the pool of video games to play
I think I’d be more interested if I wasn’t having to manage the progression of/switch back and forth between two characters. I tend to just like focusing on one character in these kinds of RPGs. Great review.
Thanks for this informative review! I'd be interested to know which action/adventure games have the most fun combat gameplay. Could it be a subject for a video?
I just completed this game and thought it was alright. Felt like it had a lot of potential but all the backtracking you have to do for quests really hurt the overall experience for me
It's sad how much hope it gave me when you said that you had gotten an early review copy and were allowed to release the review BEFORE the release date lol. Shows how much faith I've lost in the gaming industry
Thanks for this review, was really unsure if i should get the game right away or not. Sadly never finished Vampyr or any LiS game, but i like the way DontNod tells some stories and Banishers sounds fun, but was unsure if it was worth for the story and decisions. I like games where you clearly have decisions that have impact and are not just show. Sadly some of Dontnod games seem to not have this much impact in decisions. DontNod's Remember Me for example had these, really liked the game, but it basicly didnt have any decisions, but the story always sounded like it would have decisions or you should have gotten the option to choose.
I don't understand why ppl say vampyr's combat was bad. I liked it a lot. The dash was insane the skill tree was cool and the abilities were dope. The enemies and the bland environments were the downfall of the game. Maybe it's bc I'm on a controller.
I hope one day to add a pointer to the map if lets say you want to go to a specific location and also a mini map on the bottom right corner of the screen, the usual staff, it happend a lot of times with me to want to go to a specific location and always taking a wrong turn and needed to open the map. I mean come on if the game wants you to explore the map lets make it a little bit easier.
Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden may not be a perfect game, but I'll be damned if it's not unique, and for that alone I definitely hope it succeeds in selling well. I'm so tired of almost every game I play reminding me of five other games I've played in the past two years. I'm glad this game took some risks and didn't end up being just another generic adventure game with ghosts.
Seems like more of Vampyr which is a good thing to me. Story, characters and atmosphere are my priority in these type of games and Banisher seem to nail it
I was super intrigued by this, but had no idea it was by Don't Nod! That alone is enough for at least a rental from me. I couldn't get into the Life is Strange series, but Vampyr was awesome and Remember Me was a great debut!
I was gonna play Vampyr several times. I decided to do the hardest version where I don't feed on anyone first. I got to the ending and read the room on how that ending would be different. I decided I didn't need to be depressed and just stopped at one playthrough.
Your review is certainly the most useful. IGN and others are OK though. All that being said I'm looking forward to my PS5 copy being delivered! Ring doorbell, ring!
I played Vampyr not so long ago, while i liked it, the level system didn't clicked for me, making the combat a bit annoying,if they fixed this problem it may be one of my favorites for the year.
I’m sad to see a game with another amazing narrative held back by subpar combat. Especially in the AA space I feel this is a recurring issue. It feels like devs aren’t confident that the story can stand on its own and they feel like they have to include combat. But in the end, I feel, anyone who would have played it just for the narrative is annoyed by slogging thru the combat and anyone that wouldn’t have played it without the combat will dislike it cuz the combat isn’t good and will either refund it and/or drag down reviews. Either way I’m quite interested in this but may let it cook for a bit to see if there are any updates before I pick it up. I really hope don’t nod keeps exploring games of this type.
Excellent game! extremley well put together and compelling. Also this game has the best side quests ive ever played as each one is different and ties into the story as a whole.
How long did it take you to beat this in a week? How long did it take you, and ay what difficulty? I would also like to know do you think it was o e of the hardest games you've played or more on the easier side?
Does the blame/banish/ascend setup limit your playstyle / enjoyment like in Vampyr? Tried to go pacifist there but was so underpowered it was a massive chore.

The game is fucking amazing, ive been gaming a long long time and this game makes me uncomfortable when playing which is awesome to me, the dialogue is god tier
So there's a roll-dodge mechanic with Red, and he's got a musket strapped to his back... Not sure how the physics of that works, and it's kinda making me think that the devs have never actually held a musket before. Also that reload... I realize that they got that from a movie which shall remain nameless, but that "bite, spit, tap" method doesn't actually work.
Looks like they decided to go ahead and release the game on PC alongside the review embargo lift, so it's actually out now instead of tomorrow!

I love Vampyr I will try this game out once I clear all my backlog
I think I’d be more interested if I wasn’t having to manage the progression of/switch back and forth between two characters. I tend to just like focusing on one character in these kinds of RPGs. Great review.
How's the replay-ability? I guess that's a big factor for me is if it's a one time playthrough and never touch again or not.
Great news! Because I loved Vampyr :)
Great review as always, thanks!
Thanks for this informative review! I'd be interested to know which action/adventure games have the most fun combat gameplay. Could it be a subject for a video?
I just completed this game and thought it was alright. Felt like it had a lot of potential but all the backtracking you have to do for quests really hurt the overall experience for me
Seems like a good game to pick up on sale in a year.
I loved vampyr. I actually didn’t know about this game. I think I’ll get this over ff 7 rebirth first then ff7 at a later date. DD2 is day one though
This one looks really fun. Gunna have to grab it
It's sad how much hope it gave me when you said that you had gotten an early review copy and were allowed to release the review BEFORE the release date lol. Shows how much faith I've lost in the gaming industry
great review man, you're fast lol game barely out!
Hope this does well, Vampyr was great, this looks excellent too. Don't Nod keeps getting better and better.
I don't understand why ppl say vampyr's combat was bad. I liked it a lot. The dash was insane the skill tree was cool and the abilities were dope. The enemies and the bland environments were the downfall of the game. Maybe it's bc I'm on a controller.
Colonial America, fighting the same enemies... it's New World again! Plus some The Witcher in it 😅
I hope one day to add a pointer to the map if lets say you want to go to a specific location and also a mini map on the bottom right corner of the screen, the usual staff, it happend a lot of times with me to want to go to a specific location and always taking a wrong turn and needed to open the map.
Story, characters and atmosphere are my priority in these type of games and Banisher seem to nail it
Finished Last year Life is Strange 1 / BtS Remastered and LiS 2. Still need to finish Vampyr and the other games the devs did in the meantime.
Seems very Witcher-ey in concept. I like Witcher-ey things, I may have to try.
I was super intrigued by this, but had no idea it was by Don't Nod! That alone is enough for at least a rental from me. I couldn't get into the Life is Strange series, but Vampyr was awesome and Remember Me was a great debut!
yup march 22nd gunna be great!!
I loved Vampyr! Played it several times. This one is even better? So I'll buy it happily!
Very good review. Thank you.
For the algorithm!
Question, which ending you'd like the most? some players said that evil ending is mind blowing.
I think the 'good' ending was the was most rewarding from a storytelling stand point
It feels very familiar to God of war
great review mate, gonna try the game looks pretty interesting
Vampyr was so damn good. So I might actually buy this at full price.
I'm on the same train. I decided to buy it yesterday. 3hs and I don't regret it. Combat is okay so far (kinda generic) but story is really good so far
@fabitoselajuega Man, you a real one. After my tax return, I'mma pick a copy up this friday. Lol
I played Vampyr not so long ago, while i liked it, the level system didn't clicked for me, making the combat a bit annoying,if they fixed this problem it may be one of my favorites for the year.
Ngl, I didn't know this game was out already.
@@mtg1776 or it means in Vampyr not killing any humans 🤷🏻♂️ which unfortunately you need to do to unlock stronger abilities.
No, it doesn't affect your level or exp the way Vampyr does
@@MortismalGaming that’s awesome, thanks!
@@michaellangan5037Considering the clear context of your question, I feel like that person's initial reply was an attempt to compensate for their own feelings of inadequacy
@@Blasted2Oblivion 😂😂😂 I mean I figured it was a pretty clear question 🤣 but thanks!
Are there Quick Time Events, and if there are, can you toggle them off?
No
QTEs are my least favorite things about so many modern games. 😫 I have nerve damage in my hands, so they make a lot of games literally unplayable for me.
@@sylvirgiomanach1491 Sad to hear about your nerve damage :(
The game is fucking amazing, ive been gaming a long long time and this game makes me uncomfortable when playing which is awesome to me, the dialogue is god tier
It's a game about ghosts and witchcraft being real but yeah the physics of this video game are in fact not real.
Great review! Definitely looking forward to playing this tomorrow😁
