How To Make a 3 Penny Battery

  • Is there energy hidden inside your pocket change? Convert pennies into make-shift batteries that can drive small current devices like LED's and calculators.
    Many people have asked how long the green LED stayed on. Surprisingly, it was bright for 2-1/2 weeks before finally fizzling out!

    LEGALITIES: Some people have asked about the legality of treating pennies in this manner. The federal law states that there are exceptions made for use as "educational, amusement, novelty, jewelry, and similar purposes as long as the volumes treated and the nature of the treatment make it clear that such treatment is not intended as a means by which to profit solely from the value of the metal content of the coins." For more information, see: www.federalregister.gov/artic...
    This is a wet-cell battery. Pennies newer than 1982 are nearly 98% Zinc.
    The redox reaction between the copper and zinc metals allow electrons to flow and each cell provides around 0.6 volts of electric potential.
    Here is how to light up an LED and power a calculator using some loose pocket change!
    I found this link that helps explain the reaction and why it works: www.science.uwaterloo.ca/~cchi...
    Basically, a galvanic cell consists of at least two half cells, a reduction cell and an oxidation cell. Chemical reactions in the two half cells provide the electrons for the galvanic cell operations. Copper ions gain electrons (reduced) while zinc ions give them up (oxidized). = (redox)
    An electrolyte like salt water or vinegar helps get the metals into ions. Electrons flow through the electric conductors connecting the electrodes, as ions flow through the salt bridge.
    The overall reaction of the galvanic cell is: Zn + Cu2+ = Zn2+ + Cu

      @@normalnate3447 That makes sense because contrary to popular belief, light bulbs take a lot more damage when you turn them on and off all the time versus just leaving it on. When it goes from cold to hot immediately, it stresses the filament. However if the filament is just constantly glowing, it doesn't stress anywhere near as much. Although it still will go out eventually.

    How many pennies would it take to power a 300 watt computer? (of course its a scrap computer) Since its dc I would need a power inverter but how would I even begin to calculate this? Yes, I'm aware its not practical but its just an experiment that I would love to try. Also, would I need to make up a bunch of penny cells and put them in parallel or series?

    • @insaneAnimeLover
      @insaneAnimeLover 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Well, each penny gives you about 0.6V and 500µA (= 0.0005A). So you would actually need 1 million pennies. 0.6V * 0.0005A * 1 million = 300W. But the good news is you don't need an inverter. PC power supplies can run on AC or DC. You could make a stack of 333 pennies to get around 200V and then put 3000 of those stacks in parallel to get the current up to 1.5A
      But why not try it with a cell phone instead? Then you'd only need 3000 pennies.

      The reaction happenning is a flux of electrons from the copper to the zinc so no, it won't recharge unless you apply the same amount of electricity in the inverse way to undo the reaction, source this is a basic redox chemistry reaction and I'm studying chemichals engeneering
      vinegar only acts as an acid solution to help the flux work

    • @Okeanos86
      @Okeanos86 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      a conventional light bulb works with AC-volt, a battery puts out DC-volt. so it won't work for a second

    • @sc0tte1-416
      @sc0tte1-416 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Okeanos86 A conventional bulb will work on either AC or DC. It's just a tungsten filament that heats up; it doesn't matter if the current is alternating or not. Light bulbs in cars ect work the same way and they are on DC. Bulbs with electronics however probably won't such as compact florescent.

      Well it really depends in today’s world! There are units that use DC to run, but what type of A/C are you thinking of? A car unit, a window unit, a whole home forced air unit, I would imagine all could be powered by pennies. It’s just each example would need different setups to get each one a working model. And for how long are we talking about for these setups to run? You might be better off getting solar panels a bunch of car batteries and a power converter to run a window A/C then a penny battery, at least the solar can be recharged each day!
