      Agree with Heidi. I think this performance was important for an intro/background to the group. You've also reacted to performance 4 which also gives insight to them (and a capella culture). And 7, 10, and 12 are statement performances. (And that's not a dis to the other performances.)

    Shawn is the original Pentaholic!! You should react to each performance in the Sing Off, an a Capella competition, in order. It's great to see them grow and get better and better each time. They take everything the judges say to heart and improve each time. Their 2nd performance is probably their "worst" but is still amazing, imo

    @Tark-qs4mu ปีที่แล้ว +47

    Oh, you've done it now!! You opened the door, now you're going to have to take the rest of the journey. There are 13 official performances in the Sing Off series ( and, yes, the Sing Off was an entirely acapella singing competition. ) and you've got 12 left. This is one of those "rite of passage" things that most reactors who follow PTX go through at some point, and it looks like it's your turn. But, it's a fun ride. You won't regret taking it. And seeing the progression in just a few months while the competition lasted was amazing. THIS is how any number of us found PTX, our first experience with PTX. Come see them the way WE saw them.

  • @Badger77722
    @Badger77722 ปีที่แล้ว +66

    This was not only PTX's first performance on The Sing-Off - I'm pretty sure it was the first public performance EVER by PTX. Kevin had only joined the others 1 or 2 days before this performance, and Avi wasn't much earlier. While the Trio had been performing together for a few years by this time, it was probably about as nerve-wracking a time for them as you can possibly imagine.
    At 05:48, you can hear Avi performing overtone singing in the background - so he was doing that from the beginning of the Sing-Off competitions!
    I would agree with the others - once you've started on this Sing-Off road trip with PTX, you'd best complete it!

    • @terrimoseley8650

      Actually, Kevin met everyone the day before the audition, not this performance. They had time to get to know each other and practice between the audition and their first performance on the show weeks later.

    • @margretrosenberg420
      @margretrosenberg420 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vidsorama2Also Avi only met them in person the day before the audition; the trio had had no chance to rehearse with him before Kevin arrived, though I suspect they'd sent him a video of one of their performances of Lady Gaga's "Telephone," which they were planning to use as their audition song.

    Shawn Stockman is one of the singers of the hit R&B group Boyz II Men, who did a lot of acapella in their day. they were HUGE in the 90s! he has an incredible singing voice and was a fan favorite judge, as well as the first Pentaholic. I'd love for you to do the entire Sing-off journey. also, be sure to watch to the end of the video because there are often interviews with PTX that can be pretty emotional and show a bit of their personalities. ❤

  • @pjb3583

    The Sing-Off was for a cappella groups only, and many of the competitors were modeled after traditional American college a cappella, groups of 20 or so singers, generally all of the same gender, who performed with a Broadway or show choir style - choreography, exaggerated facial expressions, etc. There were a couple from more of a barbershop quartet tradition and some from the doo wop style of singing on the city corner sidewalks, but mainly it was bigger groups. PTX stood out from the beginning. You can see them incorporating the judges’ comments and constructive criticism as they go through the competition, and their growth from week to week was phenomenal. I recommend watching all of their performances in order. Love how much you love them! Peace …

  • @SweetSlytherinGirl-Jennifer
    @SweetSlytherinGirl-Jennifer ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Those compliments from Shawn are gold. Boyz II Men was one of the best groups of the 90s (in my not so humble opinion), and Shawn's riffing is legendary. So for him to praise Scott like that probably gave him heart flutters for days! Agree with everyone else, the 2nd Sing Off performance needs to be the next PTX reaction!

  • @margretrosenberg420
    @margretrosenberg420 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Yes, _The Sing-Off_ was an a cappella competition show.
    The judge who struck you as "weird" is Shawn Stockman, of Boyz II Men. While perfectly willing to do the job he'd been hired for - judging performances - he apparently thought that his primary purpose on the show was to enjoy himself. As a result, his comments on Pentatonix's performances tend to be rather delightful.

    Best to watch all of these, in order. Pentatonix matured immensely over the 10 weeks of the show, and it's quite instructive to see the whole thing. Their second performance got some serious criticism from the judges, and they took every word of it to heart and never made the same mistakes again. In this performance they were dancing rather badly to a song that didn't need dancing; by their eleventh and twelfth performances they'd become master choreographers. It really is quite fun to watch the entire journey.

  • @fluterify
    @fluterify ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Another really impressive part of the Pentatonix journey is that the first time that the original 5 members met in person was either the day before or the day of their audition to get onto the show.

    Sing off was in my opinion one of the best produced talent shows during its time. The production quality of all the songs was top notch, especially the opening songs where all contestant participated in (imagine all the mikes being configured properly of each singer that had solo's etc) and the jury were experts and always had valid criticism. You can find all opening songs and contestants' songs on youtube probably.

    The Sing Off was just for Acapella groups and it didn't last long because so few can do anything close to what Pentatonix brought to the genre. Coaches: Sare Bareilles is a major force in musical theater - incredible voice, Ben Folds (with the glasses) is a successful music songwriter/singer/producer, and Shawn Stockman is a member of a very popular group called, Boyz II Men. So they notices early on they were witnessing something very unique with PTX

    The SingOff was a competition reality show for US a capella groups. One of the show's producers, Deke Sharon, is a huge promotor for contemporary a capella music and was also involved in the Pitch Perfect movies. A capella music is a niche genre in the US, mostly associated with college groups, and I think one goal of the SingOff was to expose some of the best collegiate and professional groups to a wider audience.

    As you watch these, you will see Ben (Folds...of Ben Folds Five) seem to give the most criticism....because they judges are there to help them, and he does! If you view more, you'll eventually figure out the vocabulary. Shawn Stockman is from Boys II Men, so he knows a capella as well. Don't cut away too fast after the judges' comments...they usually come back for an interview with the group following the performance. Sara Bareilles was just nominated for a Tony...so all the judges know what they're talking about!

    well I’m SOBBING. I am ALSO from dallas Texas and I watched this show when it was on tv with my family. It was what we looked forward to watching every week together. I remember being 13 years old watching this for the first time and being BLOWN away. We all said that night….theres no way anybody on this show is going to beat them. We celebrated so loudly the night they won! Now I’m 25 years old watching their insane mainstream success. Because I became a fan in 2011, I went on to train in choral, theatrical, and acapella vocals, both ensemble and solo. I sang competitively all through middle and high school. I sang in acapella groups all through high school and college. It makes me so emotional in the best way to watch this again over a decade later and remember myself as a tween with a love for music and performing watching them and being so inspired.

    Thank you for this reaction - always enjoy taking this journey with you - You might think about just staying with the 2011 Sing Off through the end - it's amazing to see them when they were BabyTonix - they grow so much just during their time in that competition - you can see them soak up everything the coaches are sharing with them and becoming true creators of their own future! Amazing ride watching this group! Sometimes 'we' see the judges as being too critical, but I believe BabyTonix saw every single critique as an opportunity for growth and jumped on it! 5 young impressionable artists being given direction from 3 pretty accomplished judges - that in itself is a 'win' and may have helped to bring to the surface some of their talent that was not yet unleashed! 😊🥰

    Yes the Sing Off was an acappela contest and PTX won this 3rd season. Home Free won the next season. You should follow their performances, as you rightly observed the raw talent is there, they've clearly gotten even better since but it's really fun to see them as essentially teenagers (19 for the core three) and a nascent group. Mitch, Scott and Kirstie went to HS together Mitch and Scott also were in Children's Musical Theater from the age of 10. The trio did a Lady Gaga song during a high school concert and blew everyone away; that video is around on TH-cam.
    Their final "voting" performance of Dog Days Are Over doubtless blew the entire competition apart; no one was going to beat them, despite being absolutely exhausted by the demands of the competition. A number of other performances from the show are memorable but I'll leave it to you to decide what you like best.

    Thank you so much for reacting to this first performance on The Sing-Off! Yes, it was an a capella competition, and it would be awesome if you ran through their performances chronologically. I'll be there for every reaction!

    How three people that were that good were all in the same school at the same time in just a regular public high school....The odds of that happening just this once is probably like the odds of hitting the lottery jackpot five times.

    I hope you will do the whole show in order! As others have said you will witness the formation of PTX, this performance was their first public performance the only other time they sang together was when they auditioned for the show meeting face to face for the first time the day before auditions. So as you mentioned they were meant to be together all the other groups in the competition had been together for years. Side note Home Free auditioned for this season but didn't make it on so they went back added Austin and Tim changed their sound to country and auditioned again the next year and won. Always stay for the judges comments as they are very informative for a new group and you can see how they won the judges over. Shawn Stockman (the judge you called weird) is from the group Boyz II Men and is the first ever Pentaholic!

    What to do next??? Shucks, get the story. Get all of it, watch them grow. Do performance number 2, then 3 and all t he way up to the number 12. You won't believe the growth you see/hear as they progress up the ladder. Thanks for a great reaction.

    I followed along with their journey from the beginning. You should see their full Sing Off journey & the advice they were given at their first steps. To understand their story, you should watch them go through the whole competition. Video Killed the Radio Star & Dog Days are over remain some of my all time favorites even now. Besides, you get to see who they were as kids just gelling for the first time as a group of 5 & the behind the scenes are just adorable. They have personal messages at the end of their old videos too. Cute AF!❤😂

    The Sing Off was a competition show for a Capella groups. This was the third season, and there were 16 groups that made it through the auditions. The prizes were $200K in cash and a record contract with a big recording company. About 2 weeks after the show, the record company dropped them, supposedly because PTX didn't fit whatever box they wanted to put them in. I'll never understand why they offered the contract, and then said they didn't know how to work with them. Big mistake!
    By the way - during Mitch's solo, you might have heard a whistle tone. The camera went to Kirstie, but it was actually Avi doing overtone singing, doing a bass note and the whistle tone at the same time. He did it again right after that during Kirstie's solo, where he did a bass note and a whirring tone above it.
    The first few weeks on the show PTX worked hard to create a cohesive sound, and by the 4th and 5th week, they began to sound like a tight group. I hope you react to at least a few more performances from the show, if not all of them. Week #5 Love Lockdown, Week #7 Born to be Wild, Week #10, Let's Get It On, and Week #12 Dog Days Are Over are definitely favorites. In the finale, it is fun to see how happy they were to win, but there is a lot of waiting for Nick to read the cue cards.

    You should do all of PTX performances on The Sing Off, they really go on a journey there and you see them get better.
    The Sing Off is an acapella exclusive show, the contestants are all acapella groups, the show aired on NBC for like 5 seasons before they cancelled it. Season 3 (PTX's season) is one of the best seasons, and I don't know if you know this but VoicePlay and Home Free competed against each other in season 4!

    Please do all of the Sing Off. Please. It's just so much fun. Reactors always seem to get swept up with the excitement of the competition. Also, when you are finished with the Sing Off, there is a Superfruit episode with Mitch and Scott reacting to their performances. IT IS PRICELESS. Enjoy!

    As much as I can't believe it's taken you this long to see their first ever performance as Pentatonix, @GOTGames, I'm certainly glad you finally took the time to see them & learn about their epic journey to stardom! Yes, the Sing-Off was a 3-season running a cappella competition between multiple groups of a cappella singers ranging anywhere between 4-20 members, all working towards the chance at 1-million USD & a Sony-brand recording contract to get their name out there for the general public.
    Each season was judged by the three people you saw critiquing Pentatonix: Ben Folds (renowned musician, piano player, all-around good guy), Sara Bareilles (another renowned musician, though originally filled by Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger) & Shawn Stockman (one of the leading men in the popular 90s boy band, Boyz II Men) & hosted by Nick Lachey (one of the lead singers in another popular 90s boy band, 98 degrees). The reason why the quality of the video's so poor is it was broadcast via television first, then someone must have recorded the feed & rebroadcast via spaces like youtube, so the quality was only as 'good' as the original screen would've been.
    Among all the great performances of Pentatonix, I would recommend seeing some of the past groups that won in their 'audition' tracks: Nota (6-piece group from Puerto Rico), Committed (another 5-piece group that were based out of church) & Home Free (also 5-piece, with a country vibe). They all turned out amazing, though if I could recommend any videos from their collective 'auditions', I'd suggest Street Corner Symphony's cover of Radiohead's Creep. It sounds almost exactly like the real deal! Much love, your content is always awesome!
