Well I think Ajinkya Rahane is one of the most consistent players in the Indian side, albeit his current form. His average is just at 40 for tests but I'm very sure there is a lot of room for improvement and he is very dedicated and hard working. One really good thing about him is his consistency overseas, he tends to perform overseas while most other Indian batsmen struggle to adapt. Many people may not remember, but Rahane literally carried the team's batting in 2014 in England, he batted exceedingly well with the tail while other batsmen were struggling, even Kohli's highest score in that series was 39. Of course, one batsman cannot lead the team to victory in the series, but he must be lauded for his efforts. He has the potential to continue shining like that, and it is really important for the selectors to have faith in him, especially in the Test arena and even in ODIs, where there are still problems with the No. 4 spot (I personally think either Rahane or Rayudu deserve the spot, though Rayudu has retired already). I mean it is this faith from Kohli and the selectors long ago that has led to him becoming the vice-captain and there isn't really any other regular player in the side who deserves the post more than him. Finally, I personally enjoy watching him and Kohli bat together in Tests, especially when they are rebuilding an innings, as they so often do. Both batsmen are really a treat to watch! 😊😋

However, I do take your point and Rahane certainly has to put in good performances to stay in the side like any other player in the team, there can be no exceptions. As Manoj Tiwary very rightly said, "The Indian cricket team isn't anyone's private property".
