I bought this system which I use on tenor sax with an AKG mic. I have the in Xvive ears monitor too. Battery life has never been an issue on function band gigs and overall performance is pretty good. However I have had issues with cross channel interference with other band members and quite often have to go go on a wire.
In a studio situation I think a wireless recorder like the one from deity would make more sense. This seems cool for run and gun interview type things but not for the studio.
Thats a lotta hiss comin off that SM58. Measure a side walk block and count the blocks next time to figure out how far you are. I had a similar issue with "buzz" on a mic hooked directly to my camera. It turned out that I couldn't have my camera hooked to an external battery that was plugged into the wall. The buzz went away when i was using straight battery (not plugged into the wall) or had the camera directly plugged in without battery. Id be interested to see if that was your situation also. So that was actually externally recorded into a zoom H5. It wasn’t going into any camera. It makes me think something weird was happening with the zoom U3. I hadn’t had any buzzing issues with the U3 previously, but the more I listen to that the more I think it was contributing to the noise floor because I know the SM58 doesn’t have a noise floor like that at that level. I did measure my distance beforehand and I knew my end spot and the distance associated with that, so the middle section was more of a judgement/ basing my position off the ending position… it was quite frankly a way for me to ramble before I hit my end spot so I would be able to talk so dropouts were noticeable 😂. I was going to get more specific on screen with my position (I had my wife keeping track) but didn’t need to since it never really dropped out.
@@AudioHotline was the zoom plugged in? Weird things happen…. I have a tascam jammy that does odd stuff when its plugged in rather than using the 46 AA batteries. impressive it didnt drop out. (Ida kept walking just to confuse the wife lol) Not so much when the chips were down and at a gig and it poops the bed in front of an audience.
It was just running on AA batteries. I have had weird issues when it’s plugged into power also! ESPECIALLY when it is plugged in AND going line out into a camera 🤷♂️ That actually did cross my mind! 😂 I did expect for it to cut out at that distance and I was pretty surprised it did pretty well in that test as well as the “not line of site” test. I mention that I had some buzzing with the U3C and some Sennheiser and oktava mics, but I was a little confused by the sm58 in that particular take because the buzzing doesn’t really sound the same, it sounds like the noise floor. In all reality I think the sm58 was maybe at 7/10 on the H5 while the AT2010 was slightly over 5/10.
Nice review. If you ran two condensor mikes, can you easily set two different frequencies one for each mike so they don't interfere with each other. On some other trans/rec units, it seems to be a problem.
Hi. Tom Buck recommended this to me. I plan to use this for TH-cam - journalism/reporting (speaking in front of a camera in public), interviews, and podcasting. I guess I can use an XLR cable in all those scenarios. But this system did work flawlessly for me - no connection issues (some hissing but idk where that's coming from). But this is the best wireless system at this price point, right?

I came here to see if your dynamic transmitter was as noisy as mine. It was. Also, totally unusable in Los Angeles so far. All 6 of the channels click, pop, drop out etc. When I do get an occasional moment of strong signal, the noise makes the signal unusable.
Great video! Would you recommend this for podcast use? A video podcast where I usually would be bringing a 2 mic setup to the client and setting up in their space rather than one consistent space.
Our band has problem with wireless XVIVE U3C phantom to DPA 4099. We have Behringer X32 with a router so we can mix the sound with tabletts and phones. Put on the transmitter och reciver in any input a high level tone around 800 - 1000 kzh. Have you heard about this. Is interference with the router?
@@kvarnbymusik5608 I would assume that this would be the case. I would change the router to 5GHz and free up that 2.4GHz that the Xvive is on. From what I can find, your mixer is compatible with 5GHz too. Then they won’t interfere. If your router is already on 5GHz, there could be something else interfering with it… WiFi? That’s what I was saying in my review: pretty much any time there is a much stronger 2.4GHz frequency that could interfere with this… it seems like it will interfere with this.
They make the U3D and that one can be a stereo version for speakers/DJ/mics etc. I haven’t personally used the u3 for speakers, I’ll have to give it a try and let you know.
Hello, I connect the AKG C411 condenser microphone for violin to AKG B29 L for comfortable use, AKG B29 L also supports 9V and provides phantom power support. It is possible to connect U3 and U3C to its output, but just in case I want to use it by taking U3C and keeping 12V selected, is it possible? I personally would just use the U3 into the power supply. Then you won't run into any issues with too much power. Since with the U3C, you can't completely turn off the phantom power AND you can't turn off the phantom power on that B29 L. So you'd be much better off just going either the U3. ALSO, I don't know if you are using this in a system with other wireless units or anything, but if you aren't you should be totally fine, but just be aware of the potential issues with interference with the 2.4ghz frequency spectrum!
Yes, that will work. They do sell a version that is meant for that (it's just a set of these though). I just wouldn't do it if there was any possibility of interference!
When I was in that exact situation it worked okay, occasional little clicks. However, when I just attached a little 3ft XLR cable to the mixer and then put the receiver on top of the rack, it worked much better. Line of sight is definitely what this system wants, I don’t fully trust it otherwise.
How do I know if it’s fully charged? Do they come fully charged because I just bought a new pair and when I plug in the transmitter it blinks red for one quick second and goes black as if it’s not charging?
First, why would lighting have wireless mics? Second, if they were rack mounted, they wouldn't be using 2.4GHz. I think they may have had bluetooth or other 2.4 GHz items running with their system. Maybe some sort of adapter for DMX control?
I’ve seen in other reviews that mics that don’t need the 12/48, such as dynamic mics would just ignore that feature a work anyways. But U3C not recommended pairing with gear that could be blown out by the added 12/48 voltage. Ribbon mic for example.
2.4 ghz is a nightmare for livesound, Wifi, Hotspots, Phones, Refrigerators, Toasters, etc. All of it are competing in that frequency range. You're better off sticking to UHF systems for live applications.
That’s the exact experience I have had, especially with wireless guitar units I used in the past. If it was a small show with no other wireless mics around, it was fine…. Unless I left my phone on my amp 😂
