Kritstofferson's biography is almost unbelievable. He was a college (rugby, boxing and track) athlete and a Rhodes Scholar who went to Oxford. Then he joined the Army and rose to the rank of Captain, qualifying as Ranger and a helicopter pilot, eventually teaching English literature at West Point. Then he gave up his Army career (against the wishes of his family) to move to Nashville to be a songwriter, starting as a janitor in a recording studio and writing songs. Eventually he hit it big as a songwriter and singer, but also as an actor, starring in many movies in the 70s and beyond.
This is one of the feelings that keep addicts addicted. The pain is so bad it’s hard to cope without squashing those feelings. And your doc is always there to help you squash them. At least that’s why I heard lol
Kris Kristofferson was in "The Star is Born". You heard him a little when you did Barbra Streisand's "Evergreen." And by the way, Amber, he wrote "Me and Bobby McGee" which Janis Joplin did.
Love “Me and Bobby McGee” and his own version of “For the good times”. For me no one can sing a song with as much feeling and passion as the songwriter.
Kris was an intellectual....."somewhere far away a lonely bell was ringing, and it echoed through the canyons like a disappearing dream of yesterday"......profound
Kris Kristoffer has written many hits for many artists. After a military career, while sweeping the floors at Columbia Records studios, Kris gave a tape of this song to June Carter to give to Johnny Cash. It sat in a pile of other hopeful artists tapes for a month. Being impatient, Kris landed a helicopter in Johnny Cash's front yard to finally get his tape heard. Johnny released it soon after. Also appearing in movies, Kris was talented indeed. Great reaction. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada. ❤️❤️🇨🇦 🇨🇦
One thing.. to mention.. and not sure if Jay and Amber have touched on this artist yet.. but early Kristofferson has to be mentioned with his ex- wife and wonderful singer, Rita Coolidge. They did albums together. She has had such a varied career herself.. hope they get to her if they haven't already..
That was a great reaction! What you are probably too young to understand is that on Sundays EVERYTHING was closed! Even in a big city, it felt like a ghost town. So if you are of a certain age, you can relate to the near-dead-silence of the city on Sundays. And I miss it. Now everything is open seven days a week. There was something special about knowing that the "world shut down" on Sundays. And that ties into the loneliness expressed in the song. You are waking down the street and there is dead silence and you hear church bells off in the distance. The song is brilliant.
Jay & Amber, you'll love his "Why Me" and "Me and Bobby McGee"!! Totally different vibe than Janis on Bobby Mcgee, but he wrote it. edit- He wrote "Help Me Make It Through the Night" which has been covered by over 350 artists from Elvis Presley to Mariah Carey!
Kris Kristofferson is an amazing songwriter among many other things in his life. He knew this would be a great song for Johnny Cash but needed to find a way to get it to him. On a training flight in a national Guard helicopter he diverted from the flight plan and landed in Johnny Cash's yard and made him listen to the song in exchange for moving the helicopter off the lawn. He is a fascinating person to read about. So many facets to his life.

Kristofferson has always been a favorite of mine (my mom had a crush on him when I was a kid). He wrote Me and Bobby McGee (I really like his version) and a wonderful memory I have of him has nothing to do with his singing. Sinead O’Connor caught a ton of heat for tearing up a picture of the Pope on Saturday Night Live, she was at a music event later and was getting booed mercilessly. Kris came out on stage in a very fatherly way and gave her a hug and led her offstage. It told me so much about the man he is.

Kris did a great album with Rita Coolidge (a great country artist in her own right) called Full Moon. There are some really sweet songs on it, I recommend “I Never Had It So Good” and “I’m Down (But I Keep Falling)”. Their duets are golden. Great reaction, you’re gonna love more Kristofferson. Perhaps the very best duet with Rita is a song called “Give It Time To Be Tender” which was on Kris’s solo album ‘Jesus Was a Capricorn”. It’s a sultry tune, Rita played such a large part on that album that the LP cover is a beautiful photo of them together. They became a couple, and Full Moon followed.
Kathie says…Rita Coolidge (Kris’ former wife) is singing harmony on this song. She has a BEAUTIFUL voice…check out some of her songs, you will not be disappointed. I love to hear her sing YOUR LOVE IS LIFTING ME HIGHER. Hearing that song will cause me to sing it for days. Remember to check out RITA COOLIDGE!!!
Kris and Janis were close friends and sometimes lovers when she passed away. Kind of a crazy pairing with her being a blues singing hippie from L.A. and him being a country singer and former Army Captain from Brownsville TX. It wasn't until after she'd passed away that he found out she had recorded a version of his song Me and Bobby McGee. There's a TH-cam video where he tells the story about him hearing it for the first time not long after her death. Even years later, he still got choked up thinking about it.
Most listen to version was Johnny Cash version. When Johnny sang it for prime time on his show the network told him to cut the part of the song that said stoned since it was live tv. Johnny wasn’t having it and performed it the way it was meant live. Kris said that was the greatest thing Johnny ever did for him
A television executive told Johnny he needed to change the line "wishing lord that I was stoned" to "home". Johnny refused and sang it the way Kris wrote it. Johnny's version hit #1 on the country charts, won song of the year at the Country Music Association Awards and was listed on The Rolling Stones list of the Top 500 Songs of All Time in 2021.
Knowing that i will never hear this voice again breaks my whole entire heart. He wrote . . . so much. And he recorded with Barbra Streisand! I will never not miss him. Oh and everybody recorded this song. Because this is EVERYBODY'S Sunday morning at some point. Rest in Peace Kris..
Kris was a commissioned officer. A military pilot. On his way to West Point, to be a instructor, he stoped in Nashville. Fell in love with the songwriting community. Turned in his commission and stayed in Nashville to write songs and worked as a janitor at a music studio. His wife divorced him and he was there alone. This song was his observation on a Sunday morning and what he was feeling. He still flew helicopters and landed his helicopter in Johnny Cash’s front yard to give him the demo of this song.
Remember when you watched the "solo" Barbara Streisand video and you said, "who's that guy" that was holding her hand, etc? That was Kris Kristofferson.❣
I sent my record to his PR firm with return postage asking for an autograph. They sent the record back, unsigned, with a letter saying he no longer does fan mail for health reasons. This guy is a pure legend in my mind and I worry for him.
The greatest song writer in the history of country music…..you have dug yourself a hole that will be hard to climb out of……his hits are incredible….Johnny Cash, Willie, Waylon Jennings and Kris formed a super group called the Highwaymen….one of there concerts is available on TH-cam….fantastic!!!
Hi to Amber and Jordan - I have a little something to share with you about this song. My beloved dad, who has been gone 6+ years now, was my hero in many ways and for many reasons. One of the reasons was that after he retired (he worked at Ford for 48 years!) he was really bored. He didn't know what to do with all this time he suddenly had. So, that's how he ended up learning to play guitar at the ripe young age of 70 years old. He practiced every single day, sometimes for 2-3 hours. He actually got very good. He ended up buying a microphone, speakers, and a recorder and recorded many songs (my mom too, but that's another story for another day, lol). So, we have been able to enjoy all these songs he recorded since he passed, and it is like he is still here with us. "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down" is one of my favs.
Kris is an amazing songwriter (storyteller) and singer. By the way, he wrote Me and Bobby Mcgee, which is one of his many great songs and covered by the incomparable Janis Joplin. I have always loved his music (and had a huge crush on him.) Seeing him live was on my bucket list. I am happy to say I got to see him in 2019 with my mom before she past away in 2020. A treasured memory for life.
Brilliant lyricist who could vividly paint a picture in a song. Why Me Lord is incredible. He was tremendous in many western movies, in addition to A Star Is Born with Barbra Streisand.
The man was a genius.... This was one my dad played on guitar everytime he picked one up. Since his passing when ever I play it myself I can barely make it through.
He is kind of forgotten today but he was one of the most talented songwriters ever, up there with Willie Nelson, John Prine, Glen Campbell, John Denver, etc.
I love your channel. Kristofferson is one of the best songwriters out there in my opinion. He wrote the song Me and Bobby McGee. I saw your reaction to that with Janis Joplin singing it. You should do The Junkie and the juicehead (His Version) Its my favorite of all of his songs.
He was the man you saw standing in front of Barbara Streisand when she sang Evergreen. He sang a few bars of the song. He is quite an accomplished writer, singer, etc.
I've never heard Kristopherson's version before. Thank you so much for doing this one. Kris actually wrote this for Johnny Cash and it was one of Cash's biggest hits of all time. I'll always love the Johnny Cash version, but there's something about hearing a writer sing his own song that really helps you feel the song. Thanks so much. As big of an audiophile as I am, I should've heard Kris' version. But thanks to y'all, I finally got to hear it. Johnny Cash's version is also exceptional. You should really check that one out too.
I've watched you guys from the beginning so I have a pretty good idea of/appreciation for your tastes. I would HIGHLY recommend listening to Kris singing 'why me lord' with the story behind it. Please make sure it's the version with the story. I know you would love it. It's just incredible. Kris is arguably the greatest songwriter in modern American music history fwiw. I'd also highly recommend 'Loving Her Was Easier', 'Help Me Make It Through the Night', and 'For the Good Times'. Those all have incredible lyrics, which is really what Kris is about. He was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford; the dude is arguably the greatest poet of the last 100 years.
When Johnny Cash performed his version on his show, ABC executives demanded that he change the line about "wishin' he was stoned", I'm guessing Johnny probably told them what they could do to themselves after he absolutely refused. Not a country music guy myself, but Cash is a stone cold legend in any genre!
Sundays, when I was growing up, was the day everything was closed. For me, this song captured those Midwest Winter Sundays of gray skies, bare trees, ugly dirty snow and raw 15 degree snow flurries and no escape from the mood. He's an incredible song writer and singer. (BTW, he was a Rhodes Scholar who after a few short months told them where they could shove his scholarship and quit.)
Johnny Cash's live recording during his TV show was the quintessential version of this song. Glad that Kris went through all the effort to bring it to Johnny's attention.
“The best of all possible worlds” is so well written, and “from the bottle to the bottom” or “that silver tongued devil and I”. Kris Kristofer son is a poet.
Kris Kristofferson is on of the greatest singer song writers of all time. His voice is so unique. "Please listen to Why Me Lord". It will get you. I guarantee!
KK has been one of my favorite song writers since the early 70's. He was joined by John Prine a year or two later as my fav's. They both tell about life and living in so many of their songs. I don't believe either have received the praise they deserve. John Prine passed away (RIP), but KK is still with us. I'm grateful and thankful for both.
Kristofferson is legendary. So many artists have recorded his songs. I'm fond of Johnny Cash' version of this song. Janis sang his Bobby McGee. He was a big fan of Janis.
I found your channel because Kris Kristofferson passed yesterday, so I was watching videos. I’ve always been a huge fan of him, and he wrote my favorite song that Johnny Cash ever sang (this one), and my favorite song Waylon ever sang (Lovin Her Was Easier), and I was so happy to see you have reacted to both of them. KK was an absolute legend and I feel so lucky that I got to be alive at the same time as him. Lovin Her was Easier is my most favorite song of all time. Literally just a perfect song start to finish. Beautiful.
Dammit guys, I love seeing my old songs through fresh younger eyes. "Loving you was easier" is another classic. Thank you guys. Made me smile n tear up ✌️😁 Btw, RIP Kris Kristofferson. He passed away a couple of months ago. May his path be bright.
Kristofferson - Me and Bobby McGee, Help Me Make it Through the Night, Sunday Morning Coming Down, Why Me (Lord), They Killed Him. Actor, Singer Songwriter, College Athlete, Rhodes Scholar, and Army Vet.
I have lost count of the times I have suggested this song. Kris is a phenomenal writer. He wrote Me and Bobby McGee amongst others. The story of this song is that Kris was in the armed forces, writing music in his spare time and kept sending Johnny Cash songs. Kris finally flew a helicopter, landing on Johnny's front lawn to get his attention. Johnny recorded the song, and it became a smash, country hit, and they became best friends. I recommend you have a listen to the Highwaymen version in Nassau where both of them sing the song. th-cam.com/video/r0ARfcJvJ68/w-d-xo.html
Kris Kristofferson and Rita Coolidge - Help Me Make it Through the Night (another song Kris wrote) live performance from 1972 is one of the most intimate and iconic duets ever recorded. Worth a watch.
His wife, the backup singer, was the phenomenal Rita Coolidge. Kris is best known as a songwriter, and Janis Joplin took his ''Me and Bobby McGee' to greatness
You have met my hero!!! Kris is a poet who sets his words to music. Open up that goldmine! Now listen to his duet with his ex-wife Rita Coolidge (another stunner of a singer) called "I'd Rather Be Sorry". Understanding love as you two do it will blow your socks off!
My mom and dad raised me on this stuff. I'm glad you can hear the simplicity and heart in such simple things. I haven't heard that song since the 70's He's in a movie called "Convoy" Check it out. He's the star and it's, not laid back. The music what you'd expect. Thank you again.

Kris Kristofferson and Paul Simon - the two greatest songwriters of the boomer - my - era.
Country writers like him and Marty Robbins can write songs with so little words, but you can picture what thier singing about in your mind.
A beautiful song written by a beautiful soul ♥️
Kris also said he never had to work at a regular job again after Johnny cut that song.
As he got older his voice got deeper and raspier, and my opinion, even better. The same for Leonard Cohen.
One of the best songwriters on top of the list
My favorite singer/songwriter. I have been a fan since the early 70’s. I’m 60 now!
Yeah, Kris Kristofferson did A Star is Born with Barbra Streisand. Incredible singer; so glad y'all enjoyed him! 😊
Yes, definitely a movie they should watch.
He was Billy in Peckinpah's PAT GARRET AND BILLY THE KID. All around great cast. Such an excellent movie.
He's an actor also. So so talented. He sang "Why me Lord". love that song so much
I sent my record to his PR firm with return postage asking for an autograph. They sent the record back, unsigned, with a letter saying he no longer does fan mail for health reasons. This guy is a pure legend in my mind and I worry for him.
One of the best written songs I have ever heard.
RIP Capt. Kris!!! Salute!
Yes he starred in A Star Is Born with Streisand and was briefly in the clip for Evergreen.
Kris is the epitome of a songwriter.
I love that - this man sings from his boots! I loved it before I heard you explain and when you did - I loved it even more.
Yes that was Kris Kristofferson in A star is born,. Should definitely put on movie channel ❤️❤️
Brilliant lyricist who could vividly paint a picture in a song. Why Me Lord is incredible. He was tremendous in many western movies, in addition to A Star Is Born with Barbra Streisand.
The man was a genius.... This was one my dad played on guitar everytime he picked one up. Since his passing when ever I play it myself I can barely make it through.
one of my favorites was "why me lord". Kris was an incredible song writer.
RIP Kris. Thanks for the poetry and music.
Kris Kristofferson. Rhodes scholar and songwriter. He painted an image in a few words, that a thousand brushstrokes could not create.
🎉RIP KRIS U WILL BE Greatlly missed
He was the man you saw standing in front of Barbara Streisand when she sang Evergreen. He sang a few bars of the song. He is quite an accomplished writer, singer, etc.
He is one of the best songwriters ever
I've never heard Kristopherson's version before. Thank you so much for doing this one. Kris actually wrote this for Johnny Cash and it was one of Cash's biggest hits of all time. I'll always love the Johnny Cash version, but there's something about hearing a writer sing his own song that really helps you feel the song. Thanks so much. As big of an audiophile as I am, I should've heard Kris' version. But thanks to y'all, I finally got to hear it. Johnny Cash's version is also exceptional. You should really check that one out too.
Country music is three chords and the truth. These musicians lived this stuff.
Absolutely 💯...Kris K.is a legend with all the true country sound
My goosebumps had goosebumps listening to him sing this in concert. Seeing a legend is an experience! Listening to this makes me crave fried chicken.
Kris also had quite an acting career and was a much sought after leading man. Many didn't realize he was already an accomplished songwriter.
He wrote so many songs and so many made hits by other artists...Kris was more a Movie star but wrote so much music for others to share to the world.
One of the most important song writer/composers of “American" music. You've heard more of his music than you know. GENIUS. ❤️
Johnny Cash's live recording during his TV show was the quintessential version of this song. Glad that Kris went through all the effort to bring it to Johnny's attention.
Kris was a star for many decades and into the turn of the century
Great song. This alway has me torn. Normally the original is the best but this one is hard, Johnny Cash version is so real with emotion
This song turned the lives around of many addict's.
The two best songwriters ever in my opinion!
Do more Kris! I love his "Loving Her was Easier than Anything I've Ever Done Before".
Kristofferson is legendary. So many artists have recorded his songs. I'm fond of Johnny Cash' version of this song. Janis sang his Bobby McGee. He was a big fan of Janis.
Kris was an incredibly gifted songwriter
You should check out Kris Kristofferson's version of Loving Her Was Easier Than Anything I'll Ever Do Again.
He wrote it
I found your channel because Kris Kristofferson passed yesterday, so I was watching videos.
Made me smile n tear up ✌️😁
Btw, RIP Kris Kristofferson. He passed away a couple of months ago. May his path be bright.
I can’t find any information about him being dead. Where did you get that??
@@NeptuneLady1957 looks like I got gypped. He's still alive. Dammit, I cried over nothing. Thank goodness he's still around.
Great song, Johnny Cash version is also great.
Johnny's version is actually the first time the song was recorded.
OMG....his song Why Me (Lord) is a must listen ❤️
His wife, the backup singer, was the phenomenal Rita Coolidge. Kris is best known as a songwriter, and Janis Joplin took his ''Me and Bobby McGee' to greatness
I was just about ask if that was Rita
Coolidge on background vocals. Thank you for answering my question even before I asked it.
Awesome reaction. I'm 60yrs old and have never heard the term "sings from his boots". That struck me hard. Wow. Thank you.
Kris is a national treasure!
You have met my hero!!! Kris is a poet who sets his words to music. Open up that goldmine! Now listen to his duet with his ex-wife Rita Coolidge (another stunner of a singer) called "I'd Rather Be Sorry". Understanding love as you two do it will blow your socks off!
He also sings - Why Me Lord ❤️🔥 it's so good - he's great! His movie with Barbara is a must see 😍
My mom and dad raised me on this stuff.
I'm glad you can hear the simplicity and heart in such simple things.
I haven't heard that song since the 70's
He's in a movie called "Convoy"
Check it out. He's the star and it's, not laid back.
The music what you'd expect.
Thank you again.
One of my favorites of the 70s , also loved Why Me Lord .Thank you guys
