    I submitted my claim on 10/25. On 11/3 my claim was finalized, my 5 increases were without question because I did my research and had actionable DBQs. I went from 60% to 100% P&T and the VA only took 9 days to finalize the claim. I was not scheduled or contacted for any C&P exams 🙌 Hundo Club baby!

    Craig - did you watch the Toxic Exposure Hearing held yesterday (12/7) on C-Span. This hearing seriously confirms how fractured the VA is dealing with VA claims. One bright side is attention to this issue continues as the VA prepares to deal with the enormous claims associated with the Pact Act. It's good info. Glad im already in the Hundo Club !.. Thx for your continued attention to the cause and concerns of all Veterans and their families ..

    If anyone knows of a veteran friendly primary care in or near Gulfport, MS, please let me know. My biggest issue is finding a Dr. who is willing to sit down, look at my history, and write a letter. Every one I've seen as of late have been more interested in a quick 5-10 minute appointment, a copay, insurance payment, and return visit to repeat the process. None are willing to make decisions or write nexus letters.

      @@Broke_Expat- he meant service connected disability if you have one (for example- back pain service connected). Taking meds for it causes to have Gerd or depression which can be related to the service connected injury( primary) and these cumulative effects are called secondary. That’s why he calls secondary are money conditions. Keep watching his videos and it becomes clear.

    many doctors wont connect GERD and IBS to military service for some reason. My son served 4 years in The Marine Corps, infantry MOS with two deployments and suffered from these two conditions. Once a year when he came home on leave he went to a clinic and received meds. After separation from the military, he thought the conditions would get better but it didn't. He filed his intent to file and went to two Gastro doctors and was told his condition isn't necessarily military connected....OMG. He might have Crohn's. How the hell will he get a DBQ or nexus letter from these doctors...

    Question for anyone reading. I was rated for GERD 2 weeks ago at 0%. I'm currently taking pantaprazole twice a day, and it's been controlling the symptoms pretty well (not eliminating them fully). Without the meds I feel I should meet the 30%. The guy/doc in the video alluded that it should be based on how a person is without meds (around 19:10 mark). With meds im still having some symptoms, but they happen rarely. Im deciding whether to do hlr or supplemental. Anyone been in a similar situation, and if so, what'd you do and how did it end up?

    I am going through a medboard in the navy right now…I finished all my C&P exams-it seems like it went well. I was in a vehicle that hit 2 IEDS Iraq 2005 and of course the nonstop barrage of rockets and mortar attacks. I put in 21 claims and the DBQ forms the examiners filled out are in my tricare online portal and they all seem favorable except the audiologist denied my tinnitus claim..saying it was not likely I have it!!??? It’s like, dude-I was literally blown up 2 times in a MTVR! What the actual heck?! But if anyone has any advice for going thru a medboard I’d appreciate it.

  • @julian_david4556

    I’m at 10% for GERD but trying to get an increase for the past year got a decision letter that said nothing changed and that I need to do a 21-526ez for an increase. Hoping I can get it backdated to my previous filing since my VSO submitted it incorrectly, but he did get me from 60-80%! So I’m happy. Now I’m going for 60% for GERD. I started experiencing shoulder and chest pain and a few days ago from one of my throwing up phases I noticed blood in my acid. I went to the hospital 8 times last year for unbearable pain. Had to get morphine and had scans and showed that my smaller intestine was inflamed. I really hope I can get to 100% this has prevented me from working comfortably and already lost 50+lbs twice in a 5 yr period. It’s not fun being in bed, in pain, inability to keep liquids/food down for up to a week. Stay safe fam and stay strong

  • @magician2020
    @magician2020 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I have a question about GERD vs IBS. as it relates to secondary/additional ratings. Does the VA differentiate between GERD and IBS, meaning that there is a separate rating and diagnostic code for each i.e. 7346 for GERD and 7329 for IBS (now Irratable Colon Syndrom) or does it fall under the pyramiding protections where they cannot be added to give a higher rating?
    My initial rating for this back in 2000 was:
    We found your gerd; irritable bowel syndrome 10% disabling.
    The reason I ask is that I hear you speak separately about both GERD and IBS.

    • @CombatCraig
      @CombatCraig  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes they are separate ratings but the VA often combines them due to overlapping symptoms. I would have your doctor separate the symptoms and then file a supplemental claim🤠

    • @magician2020
      @magician2020 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CombatCraig Thanks. I am already at 90% (88% actual crazy VA math) and am working on submitting my claim for increasing benefits as well as adding some addition secondary claims. I believe that I have a solid claim, but have used you more for motivation than anything.
      I started at 60% and have slowly but surely climbing up towards 100%.

    • @fr0103
      @fr0103 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not about overlapping symptoms, but the VA duplicating conditions and diseases to save on paying out disability claims. Always the dollars. The VA shoe-horned GERD into 7346 and didn't even bother to update 38 CFR (No. 38 12/24/2005). I was assigned and rated for GERD (10%) and Hiatal Hernia (10%), although my Hiatal Hernia is listed in certain medical reports, it never appeared in my decision letter replaced with GERD, and is not listed on my rating sheet or eBenefits disability ratings tab. A policy decision well calculated. The VA stacks GERD and Hiatal Hernia in full knowledge that they are independent medical conditions and diseases, and explains it away under the guise of, "severity of the overall disability warrants such elevation." Having both, I can attest I have separate symptoms that do not overlap each other. You can have GERD related symptoms without having a Hiatal Hernia and a Hiatal Hernia without suffering from acid reflux. Matter of fact, a Hiatal Hernia (sliding or paraoesophageal) occurs at opposite ends of the upper and lower esophageal sphincter.
      As for stacking IBS with GERD, and both being in the digestive system, VA would try pyramiding. The answer may already be in, §4.114 Schedule of ratings-digestive system, in the page header, where it cites; "Ratings under diagnostic codes 7301 to 7329, inclusive … will not be combined with each other. A single evaluation will be assigned under the diagnostic code which reflects the predominant disability picture…" If you believe what you read, it indicates the assigned disability ratings for IBS (7319; rating 0-30%) and GERD / Hiatal Hernia (7346; rating 10-60%) would not be stacked, which is consistent with having separate diagnostic codes. Right now, I'm planning to file for IBS as a secondary to my GERD. Not by choice but because my USAF medical records have a confirmed diagnosis of Gastroenteritis and Gastritis, with persistent pain, plus medications prescribed: Zantac, Imodium A-D, and aciphex. For process, it makes more sense than filing as a standalone primary.

  • @john-ug7nc

    Great Video! You really gave me good information on my condition. I've been diagnosed by a gastroenterologist with a hiatal hernia about 20 years ago. I have Gerd, acid refux and Barretts esophagus and take medication for it. I Believe I got the hernia from the 25 combat missions in Vietnam. It was the jumping off of helicopters with a 70 pound rucksack on my back that forced the ammo clips into my stomach after each jump. That’s what I believe did the damage. I Was also diagnosed with prostate cancer due to Agent Orange in which I got a 20% disability. Do you think I should file for secondary gerd?

Ended my active duty three months later still having daily attacks went to the ER 5 years later to be diagnosed with gallbladder attacks/ stones should I forget what the vso said about not filing for gallbladder because the surgery was five years after active duty but the event was during active duty, this all happened so long ago there is no civilian medical records to retrieve , from 1979-1985

    So what if I had no idea that gerd was a thing until recently? I have had all of the symptoms consistent with a 30%rating for years. I’m super anti doctor, so I don’t have any records for it, but needless to say I have always (still to this day) kept an ample supply of tums near by…. Am I screwed because I never whent to the doc for this since I just thought I have narley heartburn issues?

    I have been fighting my low ball VA rating for GERD sitting at 10% trying to get it 30%. I just put in for a new claim a month ago for an increase had two more endoscopies with internal bleeding other imaging test was done for digestion and was told my digestion was slow they told me I have to get surgery to repair the hiatal hernia or else to food will continue to come back up I don't know what else they need as far as medical evidence is concerned to win this claim it's banking on my 100% cuz I'm at 93 right now the examine or called me last month for the C and P exam and only gave me an ace exam told him I suffer from sleep apnea so I hope this time I can win this claim I'm getting tired of this one because it seems like it's a very subjective claim

Now the docs are like no no no Mr I. You can’t ever take any nsaids again. Or would I be better of filing secondary to ptsd due to the high stress, anxiety, and re accruing panic attack? I even had fatty liver in 2013 from the ibuprofen. 3x800mgs a day can do some major damage

    Hey Combat Craig, if i may ask you a question about this topic. i have GERD episodes quite often, and i know in order to service connect i can use my obesity as a bridge to do that from my back pain, but i am a bit lost on how to get my obesity service-connected due to my back pain. could you shine some light on how i do this? is it just getting diagnosed as Obese? do I need a claim for obesity? DBQ, nexus letter, claim, personal statement, C&P, the whole works?

    • @fr0103

      Since the star of the show has shown a pattern of deleting veteran's posts he perceives that upstages him, mine here might be Gone With The Wind. Why gain allies and new subscribers when you can simply click the delete button. I am studying to earn my accreditation as a VA Claims Agent and will do my best to help a fellow vet. Some common-sense suggestions: you're on track trying to service connect your back injury with your obesity. Administratively, the VA does not assign a disability rating for obesity, in and of itself. It's still possible to service connect obesity based on symptoms that limit function of other service-connected disabilities. Examples include; back injuries, sleep apnea, diabetes, and high blood pressure. QA: while active duty, did you sustain your back injury during training, an exercise or even a fall?); if affirmative, your obesity might qualify as a contributing factor to your back injury, and as a primary or secondary service-connected claim. Also, if you were prescribed medication(s) for a back diagnosis that caused side-affects (i.e., GERD or weight gain). Here's what I did to connect the dots; compile all of your active duty, VA and / or private source medical records. Focus on military records first. Begin reviewing each entry and establish documentation that is entered as a "presumed condition," (I was assigned 10% for prostatitis based on ONE MD's entry as a presumed condition); are a "named diagnosis" for back or weight conditions and have accompanying prescribed meds.
      Then cross-reference your records identifying any specific weight related entries you may have had that you can service connect to your back injury. Q: Were you ever on a profile for weight due to failed weigh-ins or not meeting body fat standards? Did you fail PT exams due to weight issues? If you can establish a pattern and / or chronic condition with your weight (i.e., frequency, severity duration), you can laterally service connect obesity to a back injury. Something else that worked for me; look in your records for any hazard identification forms (i.e., OSHA, WHA or PPEs), that you signed and can service connect to your back injury (i.e., paratrooper). The point is if your obesity and back injury have a nexus and establish a chronic condition, you shouldn't require post-service medical records in your claims to be assigned your disability. As well, they can be considered and qualify as a presumptive condition, which further validates your claim.

    Can Achalasia be secondary to GERD? I have both. Got GERD then it progressed to difficulty swallowing, regurgitating, then to diagnosis of Achalasia that required surgery to cut esophageal sphincter/Heller myotomy. So I continue to have GERD, take meds and have scars from surgery but the symptoms are better post surgery.

    Hi Combat Craig. I had GERD so bad that it required a Nissen Fundoplication (6 scars) to repair it in 2022 (ALL of the meds were ineffective), and at the same time, repair a small Hiatal Hernia. I just filed secondary to my bilateral knee (left replaced in 2021 and revised in 2023, hips and pelvis claims (only given ineffective Ibuprofen and steroids). I also had to have my Esophagus dilated due to difficulty swallowing and food getting stuck in my throat.

    What happens if you get a 30% rating for GERD and 30% rating for IBS on the SOC? Since they are rated analogous to each other, how do they combine the two at that rating. I know they are supposed to take the most severe condition and give you that with the other condition as part of it. But when they are rated the same before being combined, how can they rate it combined as a 30% rating and not 60% since that is the highest rating you can get. Keep up the great content!
