The GSP likes local control cities, aka cape may, atlantic city, toms river, woodbrdge, etc. since all nj locals know north is to NYC. So i guess the turnpike authority thought there was no need to use that as the control city.

@louistruppa7925 I concur. I view it as a regional highway, so the controls should reflect it. Who is going to use the GSP between Boston and Washington when more convenient (and more open) roads exist? This admittedly is coming from someone who hasn’t spent more than 48 hours cumulative within the state, but I think I still have a point.

Many celebrities have shore houses on LBI like Billy Joel. - Right after NJ-37's eastern terminus in Seaside is a u-turn ramp with Trenton marked as the control city. - The Jersey Shore mansion is in Seaside. - There are several parkway exits marked for Lakewood. Lakewood has the 2nd largest yeshiva in the world. The largest yeshiva in the world is in Jerusalem. - I'm glad you mentioned Asbury Park for Exit 100, but also Exit 100 is Freehold. Bruce Springsteen grew up there. - Long Branch wasn't even talked about. The country's first seaside resort was in Long Branch. Also, Monmouth University is right there too. - Exit 125 is Sayreville. Bon Jovi grew up there. - Exit 135 is Westfield. The famous John List serial murderer and some other serial murderers are from Westfield. - US-46 is only a freeway when you get closer to the George Washington Bridge. - There is an exit sign at around the 132 mile marker southbound that's way more confusing.
Awesome that you covered this highway! A few bits of information: 1. Woodbridge is signed so much because it's where the Parkway and Turnpike intersect, as well as where US 1 and 9 merge, and nearby I-287 and NJ-440 (the freeway that goes to Staten Island) end too. 2. There used to be an at-grade section of the Parkway a few miles north of Cape May with 2-3 traffic lights but it was finally upgraded to a full freeway in the mid-10s. 3. Speaking of the point where the Parkway and Turnpike meet; it's not enough that these two massive roads cross over each other, they had to make a local road cross over them both at that very point. LOL, classic Jersey.
4. Large trucks of 15,000 pounds or higher are permitted to only use the parkway between exit 105 and the parkway's south end, and a maintenance facility is present after exit 105 for trucks who miss the exit. While trucks are theoretically permitted to use the parkway between exits 105 and 129, the only trucks that are allowed to use it are small trucks of less than 5 tons, with no trucks at all being permitted between exit 129 and the New York state line.
It's amazing how New Jerseyans identify themselves with this road. I went to college on the PA/NJ border and when you asked NJ residents where they were from, they would typically say, "Parkway exit 82" instead of the actual city or town.

They hosted a bunch of PGA tournaments, including the 1980 US Open where Jack Nicklaus broke his own tournament record to win. Has nothing to do with why it's an exit, but now there's something about the town.
Looking forward to I 287 someday too... I remember going that way from my Grandparents house on Staten Island to my Grand Uncles Place in Wharton NJ.. and they had a pool!!.. Just the thing on a 95 to 100 degree day!!
Thank you so much for doing the parkway, as we call it in NJ!! 4:30 NJ Tpke is cars/cars-trucks-buses, not local-express, but yes split carriage ways . So for how it should be northbound, once you get to NJ 17, 17 should be north for Albany and the parkway should be signed for tappan zee br (yes I’m still calling it that :) ) For southbound, I am gonna push back on it being AC…as a local Toms River actually makes a lot of sense, since a lot of people are going there (over 100k residents), but south of Toms River it should obviously be AC Parkway Sourh Shore Points has always been ICONIC!!! We love saying “down the shore” so seeing that sign is always fun☺️
As a Pittsburgher (and PNC customer), I tend to notice when I see a PNC Bank in other cities. It's always hard for me to believe that the bank called Pittsburgh National Bank 30 years ago has locations in various parts of the country. I was very surprised to see one when I was in Palm Springs last year.
You should do I-495 in Mass as the real longest 3-digit interstate, since we don't count PA being ridiculous and slapping a 476 on the turnpike extension.
Todd, is US-24 on your schedule? You said we can sponsor an exit or intersection. What about other landmarks? I might want to see the bridge for 24 over River Rasin and Custer Road in Monroe, Michigan. The SPUI and the "Gateway Bridge" where US24 meets I-94 near Detroit in also interesting. I'll have to go back to see if you featured those when you covered I-94.
Can absolutely sponsor landmarks. Will do US 24 at some point. Every LFK road (US 24, 40, 59, K-10) is definitely on the schedule, even if they aren’t scheduled yet
I’ve also started looking at the European E routes. Up to 20 and I’m getting a glimpse of how the countries are stacking up. Spain and France are my top countries so far but in opposite departments. Spain is nearly perfect within their borders, but are inconsistent with international controls (mostly stopping with the last domestic community). France meanwhile is excellent at international controls, but (in my opinion), has a similar problem with the Dewey Thruway in New York: prioritizing the mega cities (Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux, and, to an extent, Toulouse) over closer, still relatively big areas long before the commitment points relative to said mega cities. My weakest countries are the Nordic ones (Finland, Norway and Sweden). E4 north of Stockholm is a perfect example: very unpredictable in what’ll be used as controls outside of the highly populated southern Baltic coast.
Yes, US 46 is entirely in New Jersey. It actually ends in the middle of the George Washington Bridge at the NY State line. It is not a freeway all the way across NJ. Quite a bit is arterial, the portion through western NJ is two lane undivided highway .
You know there are two I-87s now. If there is ever a freeway along Hwys. 13 & 9 in the lower Delmarva peninsula and a bridge-tunnel from Lewes Delaware to Cape May New Jersey then NC I-87 can connect up to NY I-87 by way of the Garden State Parkway all the way to I-287 in NY State. The part of I-87 going into New York City can be renumbered I-387.
This is amazing I once got on the garden state parkway when I was on my way back to ct and I missed the exit for the 287 and had to avoid the gw at ALL COSTS. And I took a beautiful drive up the gsp
As GSP isn’t an Interstate, I don’t have any problems with New York being omitted. 78, 80, 87 and 95, being primaries, NEED the New York signage. Even among 3DI’s, I’m a bit more lenient on controls (they’re meant to be regional), so not every one needs to sign New York. GSP is also special in that when it’s not out of the way for long haul traffic, it has major restrictions that make it unavailable for all traffic. Waffle finished, my list would be Ocean City-Egg Harbor-Lakewood-Woodbridge-East Orange-Clifton-Newburgh. -I don’t like broad places like Cape May or Cape Cod (Ocean City and Barnstable are the main centers of both examples) -Egg Harbor is actually 20% bigger than Atlantic City, and is directly served by GSP. -In actuality, Toms River is fine for a Jersey Shore control, as neighboring Brick and Lakewood (assuming the actual core and the rest of the Township are separated) all have populations very similar to one another. -No special notes regarding Woodbridge -In both directions, Newark is better served by I 95, so East Orange is my next pick. -Clifton isn’t overwhelmingly smaller than the slightly off-the-path Paterson -Since Bergen County and Rockland County are 100% suburban, I skip straight to Newburgh in the Hudson Valley. Metro sizes are my main criteria that I inspect (when applicable), and while the Capital Region is pretty big (900k in five counties), the Hudson Valley isn’t much smaller (700k across two counties).
@zach9777 Fair point. I also realized that Ocean City is along the border with Atlantic County, and that GSP doesn’t quite get there. For my southern terminus then maybe Lower Township? It’s technically still incorporated under the Faulkner Act, and it’s twice the population of Ocean City…
@TheSharkKing45 Gotham City is based off of New York if I’m not mistaken, but southbound, the GSP actually veers AWAY from New York. As for Metropolis, I thought it was based off a town in Southern Illinois across from Paducah…
From the entire Jersey Shore to Northern New Jersey near NYC, I know it's a busy toll road that helps decongest and parallel US 9 for its entire length. Also, it does have a connector to I-87 NY/I-287/NYST in Rockland County, NY.
Surprisingly, I've never taken the GSP south of the Barnegat area, though usually the furthest soth I'd go from Staten Island would be to Manasquan. But going north ive taken the Parkway many times from Woodbridge and 440 up to the NY Thruway on the way to my grandmother's cabins in the Adirondacks
If I see a Springfield (7:07) on an overhead sign, I automatically assume it's the one in Massachusetts, Illinois, or Missouri. One time I googled that city and there is a Springfield in 34 states.
Here’s Speedboy14’s the way it should be for the Garden State Parkway North bound: New York City (until I-78 or I-95), Paterson (until I-80), Albany South bound: Newark, Shore/Atlantic City, Atlantic City, Cape May
@@cosmo5164 Yep, it ends in Montvale, not Mahwah. The guy who creates these videos gets so much wrong and does not hide his disdain for the way things are done in New Jersey & Pennsylvania.
Us 46 is not a freeway anywhere on its length. Too many at grade intersections and commercial entrances and exits. The last town on US 46 before hitting PA is Buttzville.
When the GSP was first opened, there was not a direct connection with the NJ Turnpike. You had to drive on US 9 for a mile or so to go from one to the other (at least Turnpike South and Parkway North).
I'm a little surprised to hear you say that about PNC Bank. They're in St. Louis and other places in the midwest. Really expanded in recent years. One in Cape May, NJ as well.
@ErikCB912 Before then, how about Jackson? It is one of the largest communities in the Jersey Shore area (60k I think) and, if I remember correctly from a book I once had about the best rollercoasters in America, it is home to the #1 entry.
@@tylermarchand2996 Jackson? Maybe going eastbound I could see, but not going westbound. Trenton is far more important. I do think it could be a good secondary control city. I guess the rollercoaster you’re referring to is Kingda Ka.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Thanks for getting so much wrong! Most of the traffic IS NOT going to New York, it's wholly within New Jersey. Herbertsville is part of Brick Township. The parkway is divided Express & Local, the Turnpike is divided Cars only & all vehicles. When approaching Woodbridge it's no longer local lanes it's actually the exit with 1 lane that takes you back to the Parkway if you miss the divider. Metro Park is a major rail station on the Northeast Corridor. Route 46 is not a freeway at any point.
The control cities make sense. It's the big cities and towns along the way. The GSP doesn't go into NYC at all, and only ends at the NY state line, so signing NY is not right at all (until the very top). It also tends to bypass the biggest cities in NJ (Newark, Trenton) with access along the way. The best control city is southbound in the northern half for "Shore Points".
US 46 isn't a freeway in all of NJ. It's mostly 50mph with traffic lights and stuff along the right. In western NJ, it's closer to a country road than a freeway. There are only a few sections in which it's a real freeway (with "Jersey barriers") down the middle.
I do have an exit request when you get to I 287... the exit with US 202 and US 206 in Bedminster NJ... That is the exit we got off to go to Wharton NJ...
6:01 The way thats set up that is a connector distributor road for that exit and the only reason it even has a connection to the Parkway is because they didnt want people getting into accidents trying to get over to the left to continue on the GSP. 6:20 Any mentions of Trenton just generally are bad... very few reasons to go there...if it wasn't the capital no one would care in the slightest
Exit 82 does not have a letter for Seaside Heights markets itself using “Exit 82”. This is the only Parkway exit that does not use A, B, etc. for the multi ramp exit. For northbound past Newark, the through sign should also refer to Tappan Zee Bridge (I will never refer to it by its new name).
Are you referring to its new name the Mario Cuomo Bridge. Sadly NYSTA signs for Tappan Zee Bridge are covered by the Mario Cuomo bridge for myself I still use Tappan Zee Bridge. Look at I-95 NJ ME DE CT NH Richmond Petersburg Turnpikes New England Thruway and JFK Memorial Hwy exit 21 287 West/South sign having the Tappan Zee Bridge covered by the New name Mario Cuomo Bridge.
@StatsRob1975 Texas has quite a few intrastate U.S. Routes; 290 and 183 come to mind (both go through Austin). And then there’s 181, which forms an elongated oval with I 37 (it ends at 37 at BOTH ends).
I wonder if the Garden State Parkway will ever become an interstate? I would renumber current I-99 into I-180 and use I-99 for the GSP. I would also put I-76 into Atlantic City. I would also renumber I-99 in New York to I-83 and extend the highway to Rochester. Multiplex it with I-86 and replace I-390. South bound US 15 all the way to current I-180 is interstate standard and can be signed now. I-83 could replace current I-180 and then use Pennsylvania highway 147 south to Winfield where it meets US 15 again. All this can be signed right now. From Winfield to Selinsgrove, a bypass and realignment of US 15 will be built. This will be a full freeway. US 15 alternates between a full freeway and expressway from Selinsgrove south to Duncannon. Build a new connection there from US 15 to US 22 at Clark’s Ferry and use the Clark’s Ferry Bridge. From there all the way to Interstate 81, US 22 is an interstate standard freeway and can be signed now. Then it is a short multiplex to current I-83.
156er here. I remember as a kid being fascinated by the original Southbound exit 129 sign, which read..."To Pennsylvania Turnpike, Washington DC".
The GSP likes local control cities, aka cape may, atlantic city, toms river, woodbrdge, etc. since all nj locals know north is to NYC. So i guess the turnpike authority thought there was no need to use that as the control city.
I agree with that assessment. And personally I am fine with it if the mileage signs have NYC.

Both at soMe point
Thank you so much for doing the parkway, as we call it in NJ!!
4:30 NJ Tpke is cars/cars-trucks-buses, not local-express, but yes split carriage ways .
So for how it should be northbound, once you get to NJ 17, 17 should be north for Albany and the parkway should be signed for tappan zee br (yes I’m still calling it that :) )
For southbound, I am gonna push back on it being AC…as a local Toms River actually makes a lot of sense, since a lot of people are going there (over 100k residents), but south of Toms River it should obviously be AC
Parkway Sourh Shore Points has always been ICONIC!!! We love saying “down the shore” so seeing that sign is always fun☺️
Yep! Toms River & Lakewood are 3 times the size of Atlantic City!
Fyi, we have PNC in Chicagoland.
We have PNC here in Georgia as well.
Yet to be on the GSP (from someone who is from long island/New York metro area)
Go jets
I’ve not been on it either
Grew up on Long Island. I’ve only been on the northern part. Never went south of the NJTP interchange.
Exit 132 kid here. You’re pretty much on point in terms of Metropark it’s just a giant parking garage and a train station
I hope so. I am a Michigander too, but it meets two of Todd's favorite towns: Lawrence, KS (his own) and the metropolis of Limon.
Yes, US 46 is entirely in New Jersey. Its eastern end is in the middle of the George Washington Bridge at the NJ/NY state line.
yes the GSP i love it!
-I don’t like broad places like Cape May or Cape Cod (Ocean City and Barnstable are the main centers of both examples)
-Egg Harbor is actually 20% bigger than Atlantic City, and is directly served by GSP.
-In actuality, Toms River is fine for a Jersey Shore control, as neighboring Brick and Lakewood (assuming the actual core and the rest of the Township are separated) all have populations very similar to one another.
-No special notes regarding Woodbridge
-In both directions, Newark is better served by I 95, so East Orange is my next pick.
-Clifton isn’t overwhelmingly smaller than the slightly off-the-path Paterson
-Since Bergen County and Rockland County are 100% suburban, I skip straight to Newburgh in the Hudson Valley. Metro sizes are my main criteria that I inspect (when applicable), and while the Capital Region is pretty big (900k in five counties), the Hudson Valley isn’t much smaller (700k across two counties).
Cape May is referring to the town not the county
@zach9777 Fair point. I also realized that Ocean City is along the border with Atlantic County, and that GSP doesn’t quite get there. For my southern terminus then maybe Lower Township? It’s technically still incorporated under the Faulkner Act, and it’s twice the population of Ocean City…
/hj
I'm disappointed that the Southbound GSP doesn't have Gotham City and Metropolis , DE on the signage
Thanks for doing the Garden State Parkway in my hometown is Tom's River and yeah I know disagree with that! But that's okay 👍
Looking forward to the Northeast Extension of the PA Turnpike and all of I 476 someday.. The longest 3 digit Interstate in the Interstate system..
Same. Maybe Oregon too
The ubiquity of Springfields in the US apparently influenced having the Simpsons live there.
@@BeltwayLandLion The Andersons from "Father Knows Best", a 1950s sitcom, were also from Springfield.
Can you do I-195 in New Jersey after I-435
BTW there is an awesome bakery in Nanuet NY... I highly recommend their halfmoon cookies!!
8:57 Well, at least the shields didn't fall off of the signs, like it has on signs in some other states.
Thanks again, Todd. I just figured out how to increase the amount!
Here’s Speedboy14’s the way it should be for the Garden State Parkway
North bound: New York City (until I-78 or I-95), Paterson (until I-80), Albany
South bound: Newark, Shore/Atlantic City, Atlantic City, Cape May
Solid
As a former Staten Islander and current Toms River resident this is infact my home highway other than the 440
Exit 160 checking in 👋🏽
0:30 Someone may have said this but GSP goes from Cape May to Nanuet, NY. Wildwood and Mahwah are incorrect
🤣🤣🤣🤣 How can it go to Nanuet, it ends in New Jersey? It connects the Thruway when it crosses into Chestnut Ridge NY.
@@RonD937 as the GSP connector, which ends at Thruway Mainline at Nanuet. If you wanna nitpick, the last NJ town is Montvale, still not Mahwah
@@cosmo5164 Yep, it ends in Montvale, not Mahwah. The guy who creates these videos gets so much wrong and does not hide his disdain for the way things are done in New Jersey & Pennsylvania.
Thanks, Todd. If you ever do US 75, I'd like you to highlight the Capehart Road/Offutt AFB exit south of Omaha.
Thanks so much! will definitely get to US 75 at some point.
Could you do the Baltimore-Washington Parkway next?
This route is far more appropriate to be I-97 Then the one in Maryland & Since nearby I-95 is Tolled It Wouldn’t be an Issue.
True
Most of the GSP is not up to interstate standards.
NY-NJ 440 would make a cool video someday too...
I'm a little surprised to hear you say that about PNC Bank. They're in St. Louis and other places in the midwest. Really expanded in recent years. One in Cape May, NJ as well.
I think there is a Springfield, in some form, in every single state! There’s a Springfield Township right outside of my town.
There are 2 Springfields in New Jersey.
PNC Arena, home of the Carolina Hurricanes. So, PNC exists in North Carolina too, I guess.
Nice vid, you should do 287 one day
Signing I-195 to Trenton makes perfect sense.
PNC is in Minneapolis now too.
Black Sabbath was at Asbury Park in 1975.
9:26 To me, “Nanuet” sounds like it could be the name of a girl in some 1950’s-era sitcom.
We have PNC in Wisconsin they are everywhere.
For Exit 135, you need to sing The Ballad of Clark Westfield
PNC Bank is in IL too
The control cities make sense.
Maybe one day this will be I 87 connecting to I 87 in nc / va
I remember Woodbridge....
US 46 isn't a freeway in all of NJ. It's mostly 50mph with traffic lights and stuff along the right. In western NJ, it's closer to a country road than a freeway. There are only a few sections in which it's a real freeway (with "Jersey barriers") down the middle.
He said it's a freeway only in new Jersey he didn't say all of New Jersey.....
@@truckercowboyed2638 The entire length of US 46 is only in New Jersey.
You never heard of Springfield? It's right near Shelbyville.
It’s funny when you get mad. So you should do a whole pa video on pa roads
Yay! The GSP!
What about US 41 Especially the Tamiami trail
Will do
I wonder if The Garden State Parkway is Pay By Plate or EZ Pass like the NYS Thruway,Mass Pike and PA Pike??
EZ Pass, exact change, or cash. No toll-by-plate at this time.
Cousin Brucie uses the PNC Center for his concerts
I do have an exit request when you get to I 287... the exit with US 202 and US 206 in Bedminster NJ... That is the exit we got off to go to Wharton NJ...
Unfortunately I'm not exactly sure of the exit number...
Exit 82 to Route 37 East doesn't have a letter because it only used to be an east bound exit. For many years there was no exit to Route 37 West.
Tom’s river and Woodbridge should be control cities
I'm surprised US 46 is a US highway I always thought a US highway meant multiple state.
@StatsRob1975 Texas has quite a few intrastate U.S. Routes; 290 and 183 come to mind (both go through Austin). And then there’s 181, which forms an elongated oval with I 37 (it ends at 37 at BOTH ends).
Can you do a video of U.S 40
Yeah at some point
US 61 coming soon?
Sometime, not sure when
10:25 it IS rare for 95 SOUTH to have Philadelphia as a control city in NJ ..... that is definitely noteworthy 💯
The I-95 gap wasn't done until 5 years ago. Maybe as signage is replaced, Philadelphia will be on more SB signage.
@@chuckonwubu1458 i suppose that's the excuse that was used 😂
Wall township here..
"Garden State Parkway" booo! 😆
It can't be an interstate because trucks are prohibited for 40% of its length.
6:02 the Springfield, interchange of New Jersey
You can do us 52 and il 23 in the video
