Scrub Tech setting up for Cataract Surgery

  • Cataract surgery is team work and the surgeon is just one member of the team. We need a great time with all people performing accurately and purposefully in order to truly be efficient and deliver great and safe outcomes for our patients. This video shows what the scrub technician (surgical assistant) does to set up for cataract surgery.
    This scrub tech truly performs at the A+ level and I am so fortunate to have done thousands of cataract surgeries with her. When I need cataract surgery in the future, I want to have someone just like her taking care of my procedure.

    For newer techs, do not feel intimidated. In the OR, we have eye days. Unlike other cases, you typically have a tech, circ and EVS dedicated to that room which aids in efficient turnover. These cases are extremely quick and in rapid succession. When you're doing 10+ of these once a week or for some hospitals twice a week, you'll be just as efficient and it will be like second nature. She's great and great video. 👍🏼

      I always always tell new techs, imma make everything look TOO easy and not to be discouraged. Muscle memory is made with mistakes and time. I have probably scrubbed ~3k cataracts. My hospital is similar where we do a little of everything. Eyes, feet, vascular, general, Ortho.

    Sir, as usual excellent demonstration excellent video. I wanted to know who and how was the trolley drape put in the beginning before she started to pour all the cannula and visco etc without wearing a sterile gown. I am curious. Without scrubbing and wearing a Gown it is very difficult to drape the trolley sheet. Thanks for the video demonstration again.

      Did you go to tech school? You can’t just apply for scrub positions and you’re not a tech.

      @@letmedarling4452 you'd be surprised after covid and tech shortages now... some places are looking at on the job training.

    She's great! Where I work, we have a slightly different set up and staffing. With 2 equally efficient scrub practitioners (techs) scrubbing and working alternately and a member of circulating theatre team opening packs and sterile supplies, our surgeon can preform 25 cataract surgeries in a day. Starting at about 08:15am, we stop for a 30-40min lunch break after 15 procedures, usually around 11:45 am, then complete the remaining 10 afterwards and finish the list by about 4-4:30pm.

    I’m sorry but you should never glove and gown from your sterile field.

      I wish it wasn’t a thing but yea this is normal for a lot of people and when you don’t gown and glove from the back table they call you amateur

      It depends where you go to school and work. It's one of those things we should really get better data on because our total joint infection rates are some of the lowest in the region and we glove/gown off the table.

    Awesome team! Are scrub techs in the US specially trained RNs?

    • @dannibble
      @dannibble 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      They can be. But most are CSTs which is a 2 year program. But many, especially rural hospitals use LPNs and RNs as techs too. And it's on the job training. Like I'm an LPN and learned everything about scrubbing on the job.
