Gary mouthing the words as Alan told us that he used to be called Smokey as a child was an interesting insight into brand deals 😆 2:00
Wow that’s nuts, just watched it back, you’re spot on!
so basically he wasn't called smoky and is talking pish lol
yeah, but did he.....really? Maybe it's all bs to shift a load of crisps.
Impressive you are 🫵👽
Fair fucking play spotting that lad 😂
As a fan outside the UK I can tell you now moving games to America is a terrible idea and it don’t see any player even enjoying it, it’s fun to travel for pre season etc but American fans do not even compare to British fans they don’t understand the culture, they’re not worth trying to please
I'd say the backpass rule was a bigger change for the game than VAR. Saved the game as a whole in many ways
I'd love to watch an episode where Gary leaves his snout alone 😂
He wouldn't pick his nose if he was on tv so I don't know why he always does it on here....does he not realise he's being filmed?
@@daniel4224He actually does do it on TV too. Though not nearly as much. But I definitely noticed him doing it on MotD.
And I agree with you, I wish he'd pack it in.
🌨️
@@daniel4224 Well it's not tv and is a more informal environment. He' s not picking it. He's scratching it.
Cocain is a hell of a drug ❄️❄️❄️
The 90s rule change that made the biggest difference in the game was the back pass rule for the GKs. That sped up the game massively and prevented teams from time wasting.
Regarding the offside rule, I think they should bring it back to the feet of the player behind onside or offside compared to the last defender.
Bringing it back to that is the perfect solution. This daylight bullshit forces teams to play a very deep defensive line. What we have today makes it stupid in a different way.
Al losing at at ‘foreskin’ was incredible 😂
I live in Australia and went to Spurs v Newcastle, but I am against EPL games moving overseas. It’s easy enough to watch the games these days (certainly compared to the 1990s and earlier), but the atmosphere in a EPL stadium doesn’t transfer as well. If you want to watch them play subscribe to a service, if you want to attend a game, save that extra amount and go to England, it’s another level and totally worth the ridiculous expense
Englishman in Brisbane here. I watched Villa vs Leeds the other year here in Brisbane. You are right, there is no atmosphere here. Even in the big international games, it just isn't the same as England.
It won’t fix offside, it just moves the line where we judge it from…
Do you know how stupid you'd have to be to be offside? Leave one foot a yard behind the defender and you already have a massive advantage. Why do you need to be that close to staying onside?
There will be fewer offsides which would be a good thing.
With the semi-offside tech coming in next season, won’t that solve the issue? Likely to be less goals with it being accurate..
Exactly that, the offside rule is inherently about where a line is drawn
If there needs to be a gap, there is no line... You just look for daylight. If you can't see a clear gap, then it's onside. It's also fairer because as it stands, you can be called offside because of a toenail or the bridge of your nose being 'offside'. With this rule, you actually need to have gained a clear advantage to be called offside. It's better in every way.
Backpasses to GKs were trully awful. I've seen some older games where GKs would give to the CB, the CB would give to the GK, and the GK would wait for the striker to be very close to him and would take the ball with his hands. And then they would start again.
not that much older games, 20 years or so>?
@@PazLeBon The game I watched is over 30 years old
Thats how Liverpool won so much
@@romanoonamor7690 soo only kinda yesterday to half the world and forever if youre a kid :)
We had a pub quiz team called Johnny foreskin and the pull backs.
The only way to fairly (potentially) move games abroad is that the home and away games between two teams are both abroad.
I've said for years if there's day light between the forward and defender then it's off side if there's no day light then it's on side its so simple and easy to apply.
Garry's constant suggestion of taking a free kick to yourself is so f funny ... it in fact is a Key & Peele joke :))
Judging offside by the feet only is also what I have thought would be a better change.
“Welcome home! Welcome!” Was that not the tune? I remember that commercial. Yes, I am old but not older than Al and Gary 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Harry Maguire has never let England down. I would like to ask Gary and the other English pundits, who was the defender on Giroud when he scored that header against England in the WC 2022 QF and France won 2-1. Waiting for the answer.
These were 2 of the greatest strikers to play in our country and like this podcast silly the best😎
Afew in game rule changes I’d make:
- 3 card rule
Green - warning
Yellow - sinbin (2-10mins)
Red - sending off
- Rolling subs - this will increase game speed with more activity from the bench, also eliminate the issue with teams being down to 10 men when resolving injuries.
Offside rule - in instances where a player is offside, but then any advantage is given up, yet then he goes on to score, his offside should no longer be ruled as such.
Also for offsides, move the line for offside to require attacking players to have light between them and the last defender to be classified as offside. Giving offside when 1-2inch more advanced than the defender is just too much imo.
In addition, I would utilise the technology of VAR for reviewing all games following up the game, this done in order to try and remove unsportsmanlike behaviour such as diving, malicious behaviour etc, continuous offenders to be banned/fined.
Question for the lads: if you captured all of the wind from each time the referee blows a whistle in a 90 minute match. Would there still be more air in a pack of Walkers crisps because it sure feels like it sometimes! Have a word Gary!
Alex Mcleish got Bham relegated and as a reward they gave him the Villa job

Shearer spot on with handball, i still remember the ball to hand days...
The so called the so called winger rule isn't new to football. It was supposed to be the interpretation of offside between 1990-2006. It's were the phrases "daylight" and "advantage to the attacker" came from. It was only changed prior to the 2006 world cup at the behest of the officials as they felt the current interpretation was easier to officiate. Now with VAR there's no reason to maintain the status quo. Stats show that there is no material change in the game during the period before during or after the rule except for a short term bump in the average no of goals per game between 91-93 and then it levelled out. I don't think there's any problem with offside but I do prefer the wenger rule as it is more in line with the spirit of the game and the reasoning behind offside in general. One thing I think it will do is make defending more dynamic. Currently defenders can play face on with the game and concern themselves less with what's happening in behind them, with this change defenders will have to learn to play side on to the game and be better prepared to defend runs off their shoulder. In all I think it may slightly improve the quality of football as the space infront of defences should be a little more open and encourage a little more creativity on the ball
Is that actually real about the premier league going abroad? That’s is absolutely bizarre and can not happen! Leave our fkn game alone
this isn't first time
remember game 39 or how was it called?? Wenger (again on wrong side of history) was absolutely in favour of this idea. Avram Grant, Roy Keane and others were also in favour...
It is true. But they have said there not doing it. So we shall see.
As an Aussie as much as I would love to see an EPL or Champions league game here, it is ridiculous and should never happen.
Congrats on 200k boys
Keep an eye out for a special episode from last year (It's 20 minutes of Micah telling stories about Mario Balotelli) 👀
@@therestisfootballDidn't see you in the comments on the last video
I agree off side from just feet would be so much easier to measure so would help the refs and I think is a fair way to determine if the attacking player has an advantage or not because that’s what matters not where your shoulder is or how far forward you naturally lean when you run
but you can score with your head
@@Stuffthatsfunny1 making something difficult out of kiddy stuff aint we, hes either standing offside or isnt, your head isnt standing
At the end of the day, if you want to support a Premier League club and you're in another country you're just gonna have to hold that. The point of supporting football is that its not just a game anyone can join in on in the same way, its about expressing the identity of the place you call home. If you remove the significance of place from football then you've killed the game. So that's your choice: destroy over 150 years of local cultural heritage or go support a team in a country you're actually from. MLS and A-League fan culture and support is fucking ace, don't see why people shouldn't get involved in that instead of trying to destroy something sacred that is ours.
People support clubs for different reasons. Despite supporting Liverpool and not being a scouser, I agree with quite a lot of what you've said.
However, I fell in love with Liverpool, the culture, atmosphere, how inspired I felt by the club at a young age.
There is certainly more nuance to it than what you have suggested, in my opinion.
I support a team from another country for over 20 years now and I would never want that team to play in my country just so I could see them live. Maybe one day I will be able to afford to travel there and buy myself a ticket to watch them in their home stadium. Fck this usa nonsense, why tarnish the legend of english football by prostituting it?
Pre season tours offer the opportunity to watch Premier League clubs on foreign soil....
If anyone really wants to watch an ENGLISH Premier League match then they have no restrictions from coming to England to watch one in ENGLAND......
An English league tie held on foreign soil does not offer foreign fans a chance to experience the Premier League anyway because the thing that makes it the EPL is the atmosphere generated by passionate, generational loyal fans and families that have been born, raised and indoctrinated with the fabrics of their Citys clubs with an emotional attachment that goes far beyond a football match.....
This idea should be stamped right out as its equally as disrespectful and greed motivated as the European Super League was.....
We have 19 home games and 19 away games in a Premier League season and anything that intends to interfere with that in any way should never be accepted by loyal English fans.....
Cash thirsty PL bigwigs were outraged at the prospect of English clubs playing in a European Super League as they were going to be financially affected but yet they'd be happy to jet Premier League clubs out of Europe to play matches if they stand to financially benefit?
The greed within football is sickening..... League and Club owners only express concern for 150 years of our loyal support if they don't stand to financially benefit from the latest idea to take what we created in our towns and cities and siphon every single penny they can squeeze out of the success we made it over generations of our families.....
I'm sick of these scumbags
“Got big Meeks tatted somewhere”-😂😂😂😂
Ole Gunnar Solskjær basically came off the bench in the dying minutes and scored the winner in a final having not really established himself in the starting line up - and now forever remembered.
he did that every week, no t just a one off
IMO using the players' bodies to determine offsides is too big a factor. How about the planted boot ?
It should be easy to pinpoint the boot of both players and compare their relative positions. Forget about bodies, flaying arms and players having to shave their armpits to get an advantage.
That was the case before and it was the absolute best solution and most logical.
it was always daylight and boots , for like 150 years anyway lol
@@PazLeBon not following you, how was it both daylight and planted boot? Planted boot was utilized before, and that is the simplest most logical rule.
@@TataMataAkrobata straighforward, if feet are behind defenders feet than its daylight, why confusing? it was neve r anything to do with hands, arms, ear or mullet

The pass back rule was a massive change that changed the game in the 90s. As was bosman.
And eliminating the two foreigners rule for the Champions League. If it was still in the 90s, changing the qualifiers to the UCL from just the winners of a European league to the top 2/3/4 was pretty controversial too. The Taylor report came out in 1990, changing terraced stadia to being all seater, affecting the atmosphere, driving up the prices because of the fewer tickets available.
i can't believe it took that long to change, surely if you were winning with 10 minutes to go you would just keep passing back for the last 10-15 minutes
@@Kugannyou should see the old Liverpool videos of sounness & co driving the ball all the way to the opposition box then lobbing it back to their own keeper to do it again 😂😂😂😂
The fans aboard moaning that they don't get to see live games makes no sense. It's like becoming really interested in ancient Egyptian history and then moaning that you have to travel to Egypt to experience it. There are plenty of local sports teams to follow in every country if you want something close to you. It's a football club, not Taylor Swift ffs.
I agree with you, but your example might need some changing - in history, kings, queens, scholars did moan about not being able to experience the ancient world, so they created museums and stole the world's belongings to go in it.... V&A is a perfect example
I did hear that clubs were sending out questionnaires about the VAR issue to supporters groups.
Rovers fan. Would love to have two min video call with Alan as my boyhood hero.
Was interesting that Alan mentioned the injuries, it is interesting in the modern game that the players barely wear shin or ankle protection and the boots are ever lighter….. but what happened to the good ole broken metatarsal? It seemed players were going down with that left right and centre at one point but now you never hear about it, even the ACL seems to have been downgraded from a career ender
What about season ticket holders? What would happen with the game they lose out on? Will they be reimbursed for that? I think not. Take care everyone 👍
Re: playing matches in the US, would it make sense for clubs without Champions League/Europa obligations to comprise the clubs with matches in the US? It may help to develop a following for those clubs outside the Big 6 to gain/increase a following (with merch sales!) in The States.
Surprised the backpass rule wasn't the rule either of you immediately recalled when you'd read the question out. I can remember reliably falling asleep watching most televised games in the mid 80s, especially involving Liverpool.
Best thing they ever did was three points for a win ! So how about two points for a score draw and one point for a no score draw ?
I'd like to see 3 points for an AWAY win & the spare point in a draw awarded by the ref' & his assistants.

As a PL loving Forest fan in Australia, whilst I would love to see Forest over here, no, don't touch it. English games belong in England. The magic of this sport is that it isn't American styled.
Regarding Gabriel Jesus and his shooting ability, it may be that he is worried about overworking his shooting leg. The good news is though, that physiologically if you train your weak side then your good side naturally improves too. If he doesn't know this then why not? I learnt that in 1990's!
Knew this day was coming. All bow our advertising overlords.
McKenna signed a 4 year deal at Ipswich
As an American, I still don’t love the idea of domestic leagues playing abroad and agree with Gary and his reasoning. That being said, I would love to see my club in person in a game that really mattered without having to fly to England
The Phils have a series with the Mets this weekend in London. The field dimensions are ridiculous.
Confused why Gary thinks EPL games will move abroad. I think it's impossible. Never gonna happen. Like Gary said, it's unfair. And I think there'll be more opposition to it than he thinks. Seems a complete non-starter.
Arsenal fan here. This new offside rule is insanity...
Overseas games is only financial. Can understand a club with a small stadium doing it to get extra sales but the Big clubs go on tour etc thats when they should go to other countries, dont disrupt the league EVEN MORE. I would never want El Classico to be held in Wembley for instance, it ruins what that game means.
As an American EPL fan(Wolves), the EPL is just doing what the NFL has been doing when they play games in London or Berlin. Here’s the deal, the owners of these teams don’t really care about your opinion as a fan because they already have you obsessed with your favorite team. For example, if Liverpool plays Man U in Miami next year, how many local British Liverpool and Man U fans are just going to boycott their future fandom for Man U or Liverpool…the answer is zero, you’ll all still love your teams. When you combine what I said before with the ridiculous amounts of money to be made for these big clubs…it’s inevitable that it’s going to happen. Like I said as an American, my favorite NFL team is the Buffalo Bills and I didn’t like when they lost a “home game” playing Jacksonville in London last year but guess what, Buffalo doesn’t give a shit about me, I’ll watch all the Buffalo games next year because life goes on.
The league could help the clubs out by heavily subsidising a few fans to go over with the team. From what i've heard, Americans don't travel to their teams' away matches, but Brits do. The fans would quite enjoy a trip to wherever if the Prem chips in for the flights and arranges a jumbotron outside the ground. It would bring tourism to the hosts, and those natives would get to have a genuine Prem experience with all the songs and chanting. Whether the English fans would stay civil after the beers flow is another matter.
I've always said it should be the full player that's offside, not a finger or a foot
Does shearer not cherish his time at blackburn? Just i see he has just newcastle pics behind him.. i just thought with the club that he was most prolific and successful with he might be proud to showcase himself lifting the only trophy he ever won..
He's a Newcastle lad, born and bred.
Only game I could see happen in America is maybe the Carabou cup final. But I’m against it, it just feels wrong.
If they want to play abroad they should play the round of 16 or quarter final of the league cup abroad. Then the home advantage isn't a factor as long as they don't have replays (go extra time/pens)
30:55 I’ve loved football until around 2019, then Covid happened, VAR became a thing and moneys the most important thing these days, I lost abit of love for the game in recent years
The new offside doesn't change anything. Whether you're behind the defender of a foot deeper, it won't change the errors in the decisions or anything. It's not improving the rule to make it so that there are less errors, it's just changing to change. And it will even be worse because now there'll be confusion between old rule and new rule. I'd rather they keep the rule and not change everything each year. Let's just keep the rules the way they are for 2-3 years and see. Changing constantly just makes it confusing and referees, players and fans just don't know what the rules are anymore.
Yes, Alistair Campbell, of War Crimes fame
I have never played the game but I suggested that offside rule change before I heard the Venger suggestion
I believe you
Well that change is shortsighted and dumb, so its very possible you did!
I often hear that Messi had it easy because he didn't play when everyone was kicking all the time, but when he became better I watched Real Madrid especially when Mourino was coach kick him from pillar to post then every team in La Liga started doing the same, not for years but some were looking to injure him, love the show, Bill from New York, p.s I agree with you guys on the Premier League traveling during the season to other countries, there's too many games and the traveling will take a toll
And I thought Gary was gonna be gutted that Henry and Becks had nicked his Walkers gig.... Maybe he is sub-contracting them so getting a cut 😊
becks looking older han gaz lately
When people talk about benefit of the doubt, they say it should go to attackers. They're wrong. It should go to defenders because attackers have a natural momentum advantage in that they're moving forward, whereas if a defender plays offside and it's called onside, the defender has to turn and run back. The defenders take all the risks for playing offside so giving any advantage to the attackers is ludicrous.
In saying that, if you want to simplify offside, make it so that any part of the body counts, even if it's a hand. If any part of the attacker is beyond the offside line, even a hand, it's offside. If any part of the defender, even a hand, is behind the attacker, it's onside.
With hand ball, any offensive handball in the box is a foul, defensive hand balls have to be judged on merit.
Discussions around both rules centre too much on scoring goals. It's defenders who need the benefit of the doubt. Defenders are the ones who are punished the most for bad offside and hand ball calls. If a defender handles the ball or gets the offside trap wrong, they're punished. Attackers can always attack again in another phase of play. Defenders can't do anything to take the goal conceded off the scoreboard.
Gary, sit on your hands, your nose rubs are more common than a Man City win.
Frank Rijkaard was the first manager to get Sparta Rotterdam relegated. His next job was FC Barcelona and he won the champions league.

If they take games to the USA, whose paying for flights and hotels for season ticket holders??
Changing the rules to accommodate VAR! No one I speak to wants forensic offside checks so look at the screen and you can’t tell with the naked eye it’s onside - offside was brought in to stop goal hanging and this ridiculous accuracy isn’t required - it’s all about the forward gaining an unfair advantage and unless he’s 2 yards off he never is so use the naked eye to see if he looks level and no one would complain on either side surely -it’s the line drawing that’s doing everyone’s head in - delaying the game and chalking off good goals (Cov v Man Utd )
Norwich got double promotion and stayed up for 3 years
It's absolutely pointless. There's still a point that will literally be measured in millimetres where they are either onside or offside. This changes nothing other than maybe making defending even harder and the game more dumbed down.
28:55 American dad reference
The biggest issue with the use of var with offside was its use. The fine margin they they were measuring of a big toe against a finger tip etc was too far and completely ignored the idea of offside being to stop a player gaining an unfair advantage which these current measurements completely miss and is what annoys everyone.
Now I believe the lines could be moved and target a plane through a different point on the body where it could achieve a measurement of unfair advantage. That point being similar to where you see rugby players wear their trackers, the lower neck between shoulder blades. Then no matter what position a player was in I feel if the point of an attacker was in front of the same point of a defender then it would be an unfair advantage and offside.
Ideally if a tracker system could be worn at this point then I think it would satisfy us all and also get the useless var refs out of it as they are the biggest problem and it should be left to technical professional operators
Love the pod but that walkers stuff is fucking shameless 😂😂
Gary you are an OG

Thx guys ❤
I think BOTH off U earn enough money to be More than comfortable than Most people
The rules with penalty shootouts needs to he changed if a player is subbed off they should be eligible to still take a penalty in my opinion.
Would it be so bad if they just scrapped the offside rule, what would happen and would it be a bad thing?
If they move even one game abroad I’ll be boycotting football all together. Killing our game
No, but Gareth Southgate should get honourable mention
Isn't Ricky Spanish from American dad 😂😂😂
The new offside rule is better, its like back in the days of in doubt go with attacker not defence, Alan is a striker so is Gary, they would naturally be leaning forward, its never sat right with me that the attackers feet could be the other side of the defender, clear daylight but because he's leaning forward and his head is an inch past the defender then it's offside, should to with the feet tbf, if feet in line with defender then it don't matter if you leaning forward
I think you’ll find Real Madrid are ahead of the Premier League to play a La Liga game abroad as they are exploring every money making avenue to compete on the money front with mega rich clubs.
To jet 2 squads of 25 players, coaches, management staff, physios, kitmen, dietitians, chefs over to another country with hotel expenses and flights for 100 people roughly plus match officials, hotel costs etc..... to play in a foreign stadium, losing match day revenues for a home game, depriving generations of loyal home support from watching their team at home on the promise of a few extra quid is just immoral..... the TV revenues will not increase much if any and any foreign stadium hosting a PL match will want their slice of ticket sales with a share going to both participating clubs......
Take USA for example..... if a stadium with the capacity of 80,000 hosted a Man City v Man Utd Derby as a sell out, both clubs would receive less than the value of 40,000 ticket sales after the hosting stadium takes their cut which would result in less revenue from ticket sales than they'd receive at home..... practically no difference to TV revenues as the only people who'd watch it on TV would be the fans that would have attended the home game.... anyone else other than the attendees in the foreign stadium would have been able to watch it on TV no matter where the match was held regardless so I don't see where the extra financial gain would even come from anyway considering the extra cost of travel, accommodation and loss of home matchday revenues......
Why would any TV network pay the clubs more to air a match held abroad and have to fly their own cameras and pundits over there when it's going to make no difference whatsoever to the amount of viewers that particular match would generate usually?
Unless Saudi Arabia just pay a ridiculous sum of money at a loss for a sportswashing stunt I don't see how this benefits anyone or where the extra revenue streams are gonna be coming from ?
If anyone could enlighten me of any positives to this then I'd be interested to listen
Daylight rule is a brilliant idea
Is it really? Rules affect tactics, have a think about what would be the tactical response to such a rule. Parking. The. Bus. There will be no high defensive lines and no high press if this is introduced.
