It's because they went through and experience that only the two of them lived as the stars of the Titanic and I feel like the legacy and history of the story alone and all the souls lost played a role in their connection. Their story line was the connecting fiber throughout the movie of all the passengers who lived and died from the Titanic tragedy. I don't think anyone else shared what they did and that's why they are so tightly bonded together. It reminds me of solders who went to battle (of course not comparing it to that but just giving an example), it's an unspoken thing because those men and women that served are the only ones who could understand. Just like someone with an addiction who went through recovery. The difference though is that their experience was so positive that when they see each other it's like a light bulb lighting up.
