Back in 1999, an agency I worked with was at the time looking for a new duty caliber. Prior to that time, patrol officers were using the SIG P226 with first generation 147 grain loads. Performance with these rounds was dismal. The load over-penetrated and rarely expanded properly. Oddly enough, SWAT officers were allowed to use the 124 grain +P Hydra-Shok load in the same pistol, which worked significantly better. The city was looking to acquire new pistols with interchangeable backstraps so that they only had to issue one model of pistol to suit different hand sizes. SIG Sauer suggested the then-new SIG PRO polymer frame pistol. Our first step was to choose a caliber. Officers felt that the poor performance of the 9mm (at the time) would be a morale issue. So before settling on a new pistol and cartridge, we rotated 100 officers through the range and allowed them to give feedback, while monitoring qualification scores, using the .40 S&W, the .357 SIG, and the .45 ACP. The overwhelming choice of the rank and file was the .357 SIG. It had less muzzle flip than the .40 or the .45. Officers did say that it seemed louder than the other two cartridges, and it was, but that was the only complaint. We received 700 SIG PROs in that caliber and brought officers through the range to turn in their P226's, ammo, and holsters. They would qualify with the .357 SIG and then be issued the pistol they had just shot. Duty ammo was the Speer Gold Dot 125 grain JHP, which at the time exited the barrel of the duty pistol at about 1,450 fps. Feed reliability was excellent. Qualification scores were quite good. Over the next 24 months, the department was involved in 14 actual shootings, all but one of which was resolved with one shot. Based on feedback from the Texas Department of Public Safety, Speer did cut the 125 grain duty load back to 1,350 fps, which allowed for faster follow-up shots while maintaining the same overall performance. This is a very good round, and so is the Federal HST 125 grain load. Although perhaps not a big deal for urban officers, the .357 SIG is also a very flat shooting load. When 9mm duty rounds were gradually upgraded with better projectiles, there was less reason for police departments to choose the .357 SIG, but some of the officers I knew were reluctant to give up the successful bottlenecked round. As you have mentioned, this round these days can be hard to find, and somewhat expensive when you do. I have a SIG P226 that is configured to shoot 9mm, .40 S&W, and .357 SIG, and while any of them these days are fine, my preference is still for the .357.
I appreciate the information you've provided, I was a .40 s&w guy for a very long time, but I stumbled upon the .357 sig and it had some of the best reviews from "real" legit shooters out there that I could find, with its extremely high velocity and the accuracy it has downrange I believe it's a far superior round than the 9mm, I currently carry a glock 31 gen 4 running either Grizzly 90 grain at 2100fps or Underwood 90 grain at 1750 fps, I've been shooting since I was 5 and I'm legally blind in my left eye.....I shoot a 4-6 inch group at 40 yds with this round consistently, I'm not carrying anything but .357 sig.....ever......
How do you explain effectiveness of the .223 round? Light, but fast, which translates to higher KE. I’m sure you’re referring to less barrier penetration/less momentum. Lighter rounds also have less felt recoil and often allows faster follow up shots. Maybe a gimmick, but it has clear benefits. Having said that, I wouldn’t carry it hahaha
My edc is the SIG P-229 in .357SIG. In my humble opinion, it is one of the best calibers for self defense and the recoil is not that big of a deal. I think the timing of the round was just bad when it is was released and now the 9mm mafia will fight against any other caliber.
You’ll want to look out for my video then. I have an AR chambered in 357 sig and as soon as I have the equipment I need, I’ll be doing some velocity tests and see what else I can come up with to try with it.
yes! exactly spot on. Once you shoot the 357 Sig in a normal size handgun; you realize it actually has less hand torque than the .40 in the same gun. example: G22 vs G31. Flat shooting cartridge for sure. good video-thanks
Thank you for watching and you are totally correct! Way less hand torque in my humble opinion. I am very big on this caliber and hope it will see a resurgence soon.
I say it all the time…. The .357 Sig is the “S-400 hypersonic cruise missile” of the semi auto pistol world. The .357 Sig is the perfect “central nervous system particle separator.”
I concur totally. Having carried the .357 Sig for years as a Texas State Trooper, I feel qualified to say the round is the finest police cartridge ever made for law enforcement. It outperformed everything before or after it. There was not one documented failure to do its job in the line of duty, unlike the .45 ACP and 9mm.
I have a Glock in .357sig. I've had it for a couple of years, but the ammo situation, during this period, made .357sig pretty much impossible to find and I hadn't shot it much. Not enough for form any real opinion about it. With the availability and price having become much better, lately, I was able to pick up 400 rounds of 125gr fmj. Was at the range for a couple of hours, yesterday and shot about 60 rounds. .357sig has a pretty loud bang but wasn't hard to shoot or punishing. Found I could shoot it fairly fast and get good groups at 7 yards. Yes, it does shoot very flat. I had first dialed in two AR 15s that had new optics installed and shot 50 rounds of 9mm through a new Springfield Armory 911. Sort of a break in and reliability test. It performed flawlessly. The .357sig was the last gun I shot, that day. First, I'll state that I'm 75 years old and not as strong or physically stable as I was a few years ago. That said, I found the .357sig fairly easy to shoot and to shoot well. Before leaving the range, I loaded six rounds and shot, standing, off hand at a 14 inch gong at 100 yards and hit it 4 out of 6 times. Yeah, flat shooting and accurate. I've finally formed an opinion about the .357sig. I like it, a lot.
Thank you so much for your comments and insight. I actually bought the gun in the video because I was so impressed with the caliber. I am going to customize it and once done will put it on the channel in another video. Thanks again and stay safe.
@@norrisdillahuntjr4570 I went to a subcompact Glock 33 this year as my primary summer carry. Few hundred rounds through it and I love it For an experienced shooter, the recoil is, IMO, greatly exaggerated. Go to a full-size pistol if you don't like recoil. Recoil-shy shooters need to be using 22's or low recoil 38 Special, IMO. I'm 64 and have decreased hand strength in my left (off) hand from brain surgery. Really, I don't understand the complaints about the recoil.
@@norrisdillahuntjr4570 About any pistol caliber is going to perform better out of a full-size handgun, especially hot rounds like 357 SIG, 357 Magnum, 44 Magnum, and so on. My point was 357 SIG isn't the recoil monster people make out. If I can shoot it comfortably in a subcompact, most shooters should be able to in a full-size like a G31. Recoil-shy shooters probably should lean toward calibers like 22lr, 22 Magnum, 38 Special low-recoil loads on a large frame, and so on. If you have arthritis or something impacting you, those make more sense than 357 Sig, but 75% of shooters should be okay in a G31.
I've have my glock 23 gen 3 for 10 yrs,I put a lone wolf 357 sig drop in barrel shortly after I brought it and never regretted it I love the 357 sig round powerful and definitely a man stopper I feel 110% protected with it
I bought a stainless steel .357sig cal for my Glock 22 gen 4 used. I fired around 150rd in it. 2 minor blips with older SIG FMJ but I think these bullets had crud, grit on them. My Critical Duty 135gr ammunition fed & cycle with 0 problems. I carry Federal HST in my Glock, 2 15rd 357 magazines.
Great job. As a retired police officer and firearms instructor, I love this caliber. I converted one of my glock 35 mos pistols into a 357 sig, and I love it. It has become my edc
I've owned 2 stainless steel .357sig type barrels in Glock, M&P full size. Since 2021. I like the .357sig but feel it's better suited for larger semi auto guns. It feeds, cycles well & has a higher KE level.
My favorite carry round. Nasty little booger for sure. Feels no different to me than a +P 9mm or a hotter 165gt 40cal. Always a head turner at any range I've ever shot it at.
I love my Glock 32, loaded with 125gr Speer gold dots. As soon as I retire, I can carry anything I want. Right now it’s only a .380, 9mm, .38spl and/or .45 for on and off-duty. Few more months and I’ll be free to carry my .357 Sigs, .40’s, 10’s and/or .38 Supers. 😎😎
A TH-camr averaged 634 foot pounds from a G32 using Underwood 125 grain bonded JHP ( Gold Dot). That’s insane. And it’s what I carry in my SIG P239. Another TH-camr chronoed Underwood’s 68 grain xtreme defender at 2,223 fps with a 5” barrel. That’s 764 foot pounds. Wound tracks in gel were rifle-like. This underrated cartridge is an absolute overachiever.
I was on the fence about it years ago when it had a fairly narrow range of loads all keyed to a mid-range .357 magnum load, but recent loads are really pushing the capabilities of the .357 Sig.
Yep. I evolved to 357 SIG. I carry the same round in my G32 and carry the 68gr XD in my G31. I have a 6” upper I slide on the G31 for HD. It’s the best self defense handgun round.
Thank you for continuing to shed light on this awesome caliber. Is 9mm equal to or superior to 357 Sig? Let’s think about that for ourselves for just a moment, shall we? I get it that some people pick a side and feel the need to defend their choice, but not to the extent of regurgitating pure nonsense that they themselves were misinformed on. Some ammo manufacturers actually have loads that even surpasses the ballistics of traditional 357 magnum performance. Underwood's 357 SIG Gold Dot for example. Also because it’s a bottleneck cartridge it has the added benefit of feeding more reliably than other pistol rounds. It’s flat shooting and will punch through auto glass like it was butter. It’s literally a 9mm projectile “except” because it’s 225-300 fps faster it penetrates most barriers as well as 10mm yet doesn’t over penetrate flesh, which is welcomed to aid in avoiding collateral damage. It has a flatter trajectory that in turn makes it more accurate and potent at distance. Though the penetration is no greater than 9mm in flesh, the cavity damage is much more devastating making it more likely to stop a threat with less shots. Underwood has a 357 Sig 65g Xtreme Penetrator round that exceeds 2250+ fps out of just a 6” barrel. I don’t know of any other semiautomatic pistol caliber that has rounds capable of such velocities from a handgun. It goes straight through a 3A panel even. At those velocities normally temporary cavities tear. One of the most attractive benefits of owning a 357 Sig is the ability to convert the firearm to 40 S&W & 9mm with nothing more than a simple barrel swap. You also normally can do a 357 Sig or 9mm conversion if you own a 40 S&W firearm as well. That means you can train on whatever platform you’re most comfortable with and whatever ammo is the most affordable, and no it isn’t always 9mm. That means that you are less hindered by ammo shortages… and when you’re done training simply swap out the barrel and ammo back to 357SIG and you’re all set. Sadly on a native 9mm firearm you don’t have any option to do a conversion. I never understood what’s not to like about 357 SIG… well other than ammunition availability and cost being the only negatives I guess, but it is the better round. Keep in mind that when you compare 9mm +P or +P+ to try to achieve 357 Sig performance, 357 Sig is actually cheaper than 9mm. When I searched +P+ to get as close to 357 Sig performance as possible, it was more expensive than a standard 357 Sig JHP round. 9mm +P+ is still only 1300 fps in 124 grain. That’s 50 fps slower than the lowest end 125 grain Sig round at 1350 fps and we’re comparing +P+ 9mm ammo here. Yet the bare minimum 357 Sig performance isn’t even achievable and this is usually attempted in a platform that isn’t even recommended for +P+ or even +P at times. I say it’s best to swap to a 9mm conversion barrel when training and back to 357 Sig right before you’re all done to finish up with 357 to cut that expense down. In most cases the recoil of any superior round can be overcome with training. I actually have little to no recoil on one of my setups. It’s compensated. You’ll find that comps actually provide greater compensation with 357 Sig compared to 9mm because of the higher pressures. I do understand that some people are recoil sensitive and are more comfortable with 9mm or other lower recoiling rounds. I understand some just prefer the thought of higher capacity. I totally understand your decisions. But let’s not bash any superior round because you prematurely decided on a specific one. Naturally shot placement, especially with pistol calibers is key… but under pressure understandably, your shot placement could be lacking. With that in mind the welcomed advantages of 357 Sig could easily make the difference between life and death, shot placement aside. There’s nothing wrong with 9mm it’s awesome, but let’s be clear… it isn’t equal to 357 Sig and the few extra rounds it’s capable of holding in a magazine over 357 Sig definitely doesn’t make it the superior choice. In time I expect 357 Sig to make the comeback that 10mm has made in recent years… For myself these 357 Sig advantages make 9mm less desirable. How about for you?
I love the idea of 357 magnum performance in a semi auto pistol but the 357Sig ammo is just too expensive where I'm from at $49.99 per box of 50 rounds!
@@PerceptionVsReality333 weird it’s half that locally for Federal FMJ but yes good HP rounds are close to a buck. The trick is to train with 9mm and carry 357 Sig. Simple barrel swaps
Wow, that was some impressive information and thank you for sharing that with our channel. I hope people will take the time to read it because I learned a bunch and I am sure others will as well. I especially liked the comparison of .357 Sig to 10mm, which at one time was also a "dead" caliber and is back from the grave. Importantly I agree whole heartedly......357 Sig is here to stay and superior in every way to 9mm. Thanks again and in our next couple of videos pay attention to the .357 Sig and the refrigerator. Impressive video in slow motion.
@@the.living.man. There’s a lot of key points that would be too excruciating to freehand over and over whenever I’m trying to spread my joy. I did write every last word I’m not copying and pasting somebody else’s stuff
My cousins EDC is a GLOCK 32 .357 SIG and I often use a SIG 1911 NIGHTMARE CARRY COMMANDER in .357 SIG and like both the gun and cartridge. It is a great caliber.
My favorite rounds are in this order. 10mm, .357 Sig, 9mm+p, 44 mag. My EDC is a Sig P320 in .357 Sig. Whereas my hiking/outdoor gun is a Springfield XD-M Elite 10mm.
The potent .357 is NOT for every user or armed officer but you can get a lot out of it. I found a retail site that sells FMJ .357sig & popular brands. 🛒 The Federal HST or Speer Gold Dot .357 loads are ✅️.
I love the .357 Sig. Carried a Glock 33 for year, and had a G27 barrel for it (.40 cal). Just grew weary of trying to find it - especially locally - and paying a premium for it. Switched to 9mm. Wish the .357 would catch on.
I found a quality source for lower cost .357sig 50rd boxes: Federal, Speer Gold Dot, HST good prices 🛒. I'm not a huge fan of .357sig but the ballistics are impressive. I would use this defense caliber in med size or duty type guns. No M&P Shields or sub compacts.
I currently use a .357SIG barrel in both my GLOCK 27 and another .357SIG barrel in my GLOCK 23 and train with both switching from .40SW and .357SIG and find both are controllable and pleasant to shoot, recoil is equal to me. Fine presentation.
I’m a fan of .357 Sig. Ammo is hard to find right now, but it was one of the more available calibers early in this crunch. I like to have caliber options for the inevitable next crunch. I believe it’s worth it to keep a gun/barrel around for it. With barrel switch compatibility between .357 Sig and .40, having a LEO trade in G22/23 with an aftermarket .357 barrel makes a lot of sense to me. Excellent intro to the caliber in this video.
Yes, also have my Glock 23 .40 s&w, .357 Sig and 9mm barrels, can soot all 3 caliber’s on one frame, that real handy. Prefer to shoot .357 Sig because is so accurate at distance also, cheap to reload as well.
I found a new online 🛒 source with excellent .357sig round prices. I bought a few Glock Store .357sig & KKM barrels, M&P full size. The .357sig is potent 🥊. High KE level. I currently load Federal HST for carry.
I got a new stainless Double Diamond .357 barrel for my used Glock 22 gen 4. I had 2 flubs, jams but I consider that a issue with the older SIG Sauer .357sig ammunition. Approx 4yr old. My 50+ rounds of 3yr old Hornady Critical Duty ammunition fed 💯. 0 flaws. A good idea for .357sig users, Glock would be the "extra" power Wolff Magazine springs. I might buy 3 for my Glock 22 model.
For about 6yrs now, my edc has been a glock 32, for the streets and the woods. Recently I was able to upgrade my ammo to the 68grain Underwood. Wish you guys would give it a try. The speeds it produces are amazing.
What kind of muzzle velocity are you getting with that ammo? I've just been testing some Liberty Ammo, Civil Defence 9mm +P 50 grain HP. Out of a 4 1/2 inch barrel it's averaging about 2100 fps. Really fast and easy to shoot.
@@theinstructor2687 I've not been able to verify the 2100fps advertised, though i believe a couple gun channels like Military Arms Channel and chukes outdoors have tested it.
@@justin_ogre I have no problem believing that it produces 2000+ fps with that light bullet. My local gun store ordered some of the Lberty Civil Defence +p 357 sig, for me. Like the 9mm version, it uses a 50 grain projectile and claims a velocity of 2300 fps.
@@theinstructor2687 Yeah, the Liberty stuff is Hot. In tests that I have seen, There is an explosion in the gel within the 1st 6" inches as the hollow sheds its petals, but then the rest of the slug seems to have trouble penetrating past 14inches if i remember right. Still If it produces the hydrostatic shock that it's claiming any center of mass hit near the heart should stop it even if it's not directly in the path of the hollow point. I would love to be able to take both of these rounds and go hog hunting and see how things really perform.
Great testing as always. I love the .357 Sig Glock 32, it's the same as a G 19 and I bought a 40 cal barrel for it but I've never bothered to use it, the Sig round is my favorite. I carry the Underwood 65 grain @2100 FPS because it is such high energy and low recoil and the bullet design is the best possible defense round for barrier blind and not over penetration. It also makes the gun a bit lighter to carry with those rounds.
Great video, i agree with the points you make. I have had my G31 gen 4 for a few years now, i find the muzzle blast to be more overwhelming than any recoil, but hey... Guns are loud! I love the 357 Sig Cartridge (and the Glock platform) so much i just purchased a G32 for EDC. Very capable platform.
I'm a .40"SW guy so when I tried the .357"SIG a few years back, I did not think it recoiled any more, or any less than the .40"SW. So not much, really... What I do remember thought, was that it was LOUDER than the .40"SW. I mean, louder than the 180gr .40"SW, for sure... As for performance I thought it did just about the same as the CORBON 135gr .40"SW I was then trying (which is also a LOUD round, in my opinion... loud and big muzzle flash too). But I'm a heavy for caliber kind of guy, so... yeah. I stayed with the 180gr .40"SW. Now it certainly could have been touch-and-go with this one, had I not commit to the .40"SW by then, and I felt there was not enough difference to matter, to me, at that point. Great info as usual!
I'm very much the same way. I got into shooting several years ago, and had the opportunity to shoot a Glock 17, 22, and 31 all for the first time, back to back, and settled on the .40 with Federal HST 180gr as my favorites. I didn't find the recoil of the .40 S&W as bad as people say, and the... authoritative blast and flash of the .357 pushed the limits of what I was comfortable with. So yeah, I tend to be a heavy for caliber guy as well, although hot-rods like the 135gr Cor-bon load you mentioned do put up legitimately impressive numbers for those who do all their shooting outdoors and in daylight.
'And I hate cantaloupe.' 😂 Outstanding presentation! You're the only one who's convinced my husband and I to get the things needed for our Glock 23 and check this out for ourselves - thank you!
I shot a .357-125 in a milk jug of wet paper. The paper compression was close to my muscle tension. Shooting through the jug, it left a cavity the size of my fist and the cavity perimeter was pulverized paper. The 9mm left a cavity at most the size of a golf ball. If a .357 Sig is close to or the same as a .357-125 magnum, the .357 Sig is definitely effective.
Ive found that the louder report makes people think the recoil is more. But if you shoot them side by sidr out doors. The 357 has less recoil impulse in actuality
It would be great if you would test Underwood's .357 Sig offerings in their "Extreme Defender" series. Having served in federal law enforcement for 33 years with 2 1/2" years writing the specs for weapons, targets, holsters and ammunition i can fairly accurately state that the Underwood Extreme Defender series in all calibers vastly out performs conventional hollow points of any design.
It has been my preferred defensive cartridge for over 20 years in SIG models P226, P229, P239, and P320 in both full size and Carry models. I don’t train with it all the time, but when I do my performance is virtually the same as when I shoot wimpy 9mm range ammo. Thanks for a good review with sensible comments about the round.
Yes , 357 has 33% less recoil and momentum than 165 grain .40. Felt recoil is a measure of momentum leaving the barrell. Between two projectile with the same energy - 506 foot pounds - pick the one that achieved that energy with a bigger, heavier bullet. 357 is awesome but 165 grain 40 is even more awesome.
357 sig only really starts to get snappy in smaller handguns. The 33 is borderline. I have a shield that’s ported and I have a 357 sig barrel in it. It’s pretty snappy as well, but as with any gun, it just takes getting used to. I’ve never fired a 31 or 32 but I’ve fired a sig p226 and M&p 5 inch FDE in 357 sig and it’s no different than a 40 cal out of bigger guns.
The S&W M&P 2.0, is a much better platform for 40sw and 357sig. Hey, I was Glock Glock Glock for many years. I had gen 1 G17 and G20. I frequently shot 40sw out of the G20 so all the "snappy" talk( which only started a few years ago) was lost on me anyway. Then I demoed a M&P 2.0 in 40sw and now I have a 5"pro and a 3.5" compact. Both have KKM 357sig barrels. I reload 135 and 150 Nosler over Longshot with magnum pistol primers( I am out of them now) for practice loads. The POI and report/flash are close enough to 357sig carry ammo as not to worry much( @ 25yards) One last note: The compact M&P is probably more efficient with Underwood 150grn. 40sw than any of the 357sig loads( I don't think the short barrel can burn the powder fast enough). This is all tested with Hillbilly media like water jugs, 2×4 scraps and old junk cars. The closer you can get to 357 magnum TERMINAL ballistics, the better. Fast, rapid expanding bullets that can deliver at least 525ft lbs of energy, will cause capillary concusions (pulminary pressure spike.) An unconscious man can not fight.
I have 2 after market series stainless steel .357 barrels. Glock 22 gen 4 & my M&P full size. I myself would not use .357sig in deep carry guns like P239 or Shield but the caliber still has 🥊. State Police & FAMs ✈️ used .357 for years.
When i bought my Mod 31...i knew i had to make a plan for ammo...so i got hold of an additional 3k bras. On top of what i had.....so for now i am set...i also collected lots of 10mm cases and made a trimmer...works flawlessly.....eazy to make 357 cases....for me there is no better carry caliber.....
Great video, confirming again my choice to stick with the 357 sig. I am glad you didn't use the Hornady critical duty/defense 135gr loads which in my opinion is watered down to 9mm Para levels. My country doesn't have access to federal/Speer ammo in 357sig but I am using the Hornady Custom 147gr XTPs Thank you for the work that you put into all the videos.
I got one gun , A g23, 9 mm with suppression for home defense, 40sw with stock glock barrel when it is hard to find 9mm or 357 sig, and a 357 sig barrel with compensator for woods defense. No need for 10 mm. 357 sig rivals 10mm in penetration.
I've owned a Glock 33 for 13 years now. They call it the "pocket rocket" for a reason. The round is more available now in California, but you will pay about $66 per box of 50. Great gun and caliber. Thanks for the video.
I have a P226 ST with .357 Sig, .40S&W, and 9mm barrels. The .357 Sig is my favorite to shoot at reactive targets. It has the velocity to make things interesting. It sucks that the ammo is so scarce and expensive, and I wish it had gained as much popularity as the .40 S&W.
I carry a model 32 everyday just ordered up my fourth generation model 31 waiting on it to arrive at my FFL here in 2023 I want every advantage I can get if I need to defend myself I agree with your synopsis former Army infantry veteran peace out from the Left Coast thank you
I carried a gen2 G31 for 20 years with swappable barrels for 40 & 9mm ( to save ammo costs). I bought a P229 Elite that came with a 357S & 40 barrel as well as a modern 9mm complete upper. There is nothing wrong with any of the 3 calibers. The 357S & 40 just deliver significantly more mass on target at the cost of a small amount of recoil and a 2 round loss (in my experience) in the magazine. People will go on & on about those 2 extra rounds. If it's that important, you're either in need of a PDW or team member. Or a rifle. 40 & 357S are both great calibers.
Boss, I’m surprised you just don’t bench rest your guns to hit the jelly. Even a pair of shooting sticks (used for rifle or pistol distance shots while hunting) works fabulously. Even sitting with your elbows resting on the table will help you stabilize your stance to hit the target where you want it. Non the less, your videos rock.
I found your channel recently and have thoroughly enjoyed it. I've been going back to your older videos and am learned quite a bit. In this day and age with all the videos out on TH-cam, it is refreshing seeing the analytical type of content you are doing. Don't take it wrongly, but it reminds me a lot of Paul Harrell. As with his videos I've learned a lot. Thank you very much for what you are doing.
I would never take being compared to Paul Harrell wrongly and I deeply appreciate your comments and support. I have always watched his videos and when Matt and I began the channel we talked about sort of doing things along those lines. Once again thank you and I hope you continue to enjoy the content!
I still EDC a Glock 33 in .357 Sig, just like I have for 20 years. It’s a compact (some claim subcompact) with sharp but manageable recoil. I have (according to glove manufacturers) large hands but it feels comfortable to me. I want target end performance. Recoil sensitively is intent weakness.
The pinnacle of 357sig factory offerings was the HK P2000 in my opinion. I’ve not shot the subcompact version, but I love the regular size and supposedly the subcompact has less recoil, because dual recoil spring I suppose. Whenever I go to the range with new friends they always remark at how my 357 is smoother than their rental 9mm. I do have a 4oz match weight on it, but only for looks.
Besides switching to a 40 barrel, you can find a conversion 9mm barrel and it functions perfectly in my Glock 32. To me I shoot it the same as a 9mm+p. A fantastic round that never get the credit that it deserves.
I've been trying to find a 40SW > 357Sig conversion or factory OEM 357Sig barrel for my MP40c forever. Was fortunately enough to find a Storm Lake 40SW > 9mm barrel, but the 357Sig is like a unicorn right now. Love the idea and versatility of having a tri-caliber handgun.
See KKM barrels of NV. They market, sell after market type .357sig barrels. Stainless only. Due to labor, 🏭 problems KKM no longer offers black nitride choices. KKM is popular & a barrel may take 6 weeks, 9 weeks.
It’s a great and very accurate round, for practice ammo reloads cost about the same as .40. I have found out how to reload with a extra step on resizing the brass without using lube.
Probably the best if not the best semi automatic round for self-defense. As a wood gun 10 mm, but isn’t every day carry 357 Sigg kicks most guns asses.
I have a SIG P229 with 9mm, .357 SIG, and 40 cal barrels. Running one mag of each I find that the .357 is a flatter trajectory, and less felt recoil than the 9 or 40.
Love the round ! Carry the Glock 33 shoots beautifully I am however not as sensitive as others muzzle reaction . My primary carry . Do love the Sig 229 & 221 as well .
I feel like they made the specs intentionally difficult for reloaders so you had to buy licensed brass. We can form 357sig brass from 40 but it's too short. We can headspace off the shoulder but the specs are for the case mouth if going by the book. Not enough bearing surface is my main gripe. Love this cartridge either way
Thanks for your awesome support. Matt and I are pretty average guys learning stuff along the way and he is a fantastic producer and videographer! We are truly blessed to get this opportunity and we can't tell you how much we appreciate the feedback. Be well and see you next time.
Just got my 357sig recently. I have a Glock 32. It is a bit more to control over a 9mm but it's doable for sure. I have faith that after shooting it for a while I'll have no problems.
I just shot my 33 subcompact build, along with several other glocks in 9mm,they all recoiled about the same, the more flash is notable but all are way better than 40.
The .357 Sig seems to be quite an impressive round, I wish it would have become more popular than it did. However, the recoil looks similar to that upward snap you get from both .40 S&W and 10mm, of course more of the slightly lighter snap of the .40 S&W instead of the push you get from most other calibers.
I don't get the "too much recoil" argument when it comes to .357Sig round. Been my EDC for 10 years (LoneWolf .357Sig barrel in my G23) and love it. I have zero problems with it. Nice work.
@@Dcm193 Absolutely ZERO. What's your point? That since I haven't had to shoot 1000 rounds over a weekend, I am not qualified to have a personal opinion?
@@Dcm193 None of my wheel gun .357's, of which I have owned 4 or 5 over my life, had more than 1000 rounds thru them. My .357Sig has had a couple hundred put thru it.
Find the strongest spring for your handgun guide rid and install it or buy a guide rod with spring with a really strong spring in it. It will mitigate the recoil considerably.
My EDC is a G32 .357 Sig.. The recoil is VERY comparable to Glock 17, the bullet FLIES out the barrel, the velocity LITERALLY makes one much more accurate, I think it’s referred to as “flat shooting”.. The rounds are more expensive by not by much, well, at least here in my state (Michigan.. My ONLY complaint on the .357 Sig round is that it’s LOUD!!!! I mean damn near deafening. But it’s a blast to shoot, GREAT EDC and will DROP the target ONE SHOT
Outstanding video sir! I own a Glock 31 in .357 Sig and Iove it! The recoil between a Glock 22 in .40 S&W and a Glock 31 in 357 Sig is barely noticable...
It’s pretty much a 9mm magnum. I carry a Springfield XD from to time. It’s a little big but I like it. Very accurate and dependable pistol never have had any issues.I trust my life with it.
I have a p226 with a reduced recoil spring and a comp…without all that the recoil is manageable, with those things the recoil is non existent it’s just loud which is probably what’s bothering most people
But what is with the blast and noise. I once have seen a review from Hickok45 about 357 Sig. There he said compared to 40 S&W he didnt like the noise and blast. So even with ear protection of course. I know that from 9mm 100gr loads from Magtech. They are rated with 1400fps and are very loud and unpleasend even with ear protection. Are there any LE that still use 357 Sig? The biggest agency was the Secret Service but I think the also switched to 9mm ?
This would be an excellent cartridge for a service duty SMG for sure! If I ran a country my security forces would be using these for sure! I don't even own a gun in this caliber bit damn I would If the ammo was more affordable!
I have 5 357sig guns 4 are sig Sauer p229 p226 p320 an p239 an a glock 31 glock is okay but UT looks an shoots like a box the p229 is my edc smooth shooter great carry gun I use a shoulder holster can't tell I'm carrying at all
To me the recoil of 357 Sig is more manageable than 40 S&W. I compared both using my SIG P226 which came with 2 factory barrels. One in 357 Sig and the other in 40 S&W. Additionally I had more jams using the 40 compared to none in 357 Sig. As a result my EDC is my P226 with 357 barrel configuration.
@@SOLOLIKETHECUP212never carry light for caliber. Garbage gimmick. Do your research.
@@JohnSmith-zw6tr rifle speed is different. You want heavy for caliber pistol rounds. Pistol bullets just poke holes.
my grandfather owned and shot many different handguns, the 226 chambered in .357 sig was far and away his favorite.
My edc is the SIG P-229 in .357SIG. In my humble opinion, it is one of the best calibers for self defense and the recoil is not that big of a deal. I think the timing of the round was just bad when it is was released and now the 9mm mafia will fight against any other caliber.
Amen, brother-I love the .357 Sig in the P229!
You’ll want to look out for my video then. I have an AR chambered in 357 sig and as soon as I have the equipment I need, I’ll be doing some velocity tests and see what else I can come up with to try with it.
Ain’t that the truth. Maybe if they called it 9mm Magnum it wouldn’t get so much hate.
@Brooklyn Boi how’s not a good time to get into it, it was easier to find cheaper quantities of it before 2020.
@Brooklyn BoiI guess it depends on your budget. I don’t have much of one but it’s not enough to keep me from firing it and carrying it.
yes! exactly spot on.
Lighter, faster round, so less felt recoil and shoots flatter than big heavy bullets.

Keep shooting and given feedback its greatly appreciated

For an experienced shooter, the recoil is, IMO, greatly exaggerated.

@@grimflipz Look at 9mm Dillon!

Great video! I wish 357 SIG was more popular. I feel like people are ignoring one of the best defensive pistol cartridges on the market.

Look at that FMJ penetration, 357Sig could be a good woods round for the lower 48 states.
Glock 32 and glock 31 owner here. Good to see 357 sig and these odd caliber glocks some love ❤ 😁
“Recoil is overstated.” Thank you!
Love that round 👍🏻
Great job thorough testing. 357 SIG's velocity benefits from bonded rounds like Gold Dots or PDX1.
I frequently shot 40sw out of the G20 so all the "snappy"
talk( which only started a few years ago)
was lost on me anyway. Then I demoed a M&P 2.0 in 40sw and now I have a 5"pro and a 3.5" compact. Both have KKM 357sig barrels. I reload 135 and 150 Nosler over Longshot with magnum pistol primers( I am out of them now)
for practice loads. The POI and report/flash are close enough to 357sig carry ammo as not to worry much( @ 25yards)
One last note: The compact M&P is probably more efficient with Underwood 150grn.
My country doesn't have access to federal/Speer ammo in 357sig but I am using the Hornady Custom 147gr XTPs
Thank you for the work that you put into all the videos.
Which country are you in? We have the same problem here in South Africa. I can get anything but Speer or Federal HST's in .357Sig.
You have a great channel. It’s a great reference for me when deciding what ammo to sink my hard-earned money into. Thanks for the testing you do!
I really enjoyed the marksmanship and how you were able to capture the shooting on video
2:16 cool seeing smoke escape between the gel blocks
Nice shooting at 50 meters. I love this caliber. It's a shame it's so hard to find.
its not hard to find. they have it. at the store.
@@cx11901 Yeah it's more available now than 6 months ago when I wrote this.
Love the 357 Sig round. I reload it so I can train often. 😁
I don't recall seeing any other handgun tests into gell at 50 meters: nice job!
The Mighty .357 Sig!
Very nicely done and agree 💯%
My EDC. I swear by it. Very hot round!
Love the round ! Carry the Glock 33 shoots beautifully I am however not as sensitive as others muzzle reaction . My primary carry . Do love the Sig 229 & 221 as well .
It is a beast for shooting hollowpoints velocity = expansion.
I feel like they made the specs intentionally difficult for reloaders so you had to buy licensed brass. We can form 357sig brass from 40 but it's too short. We can headspace off the shoulder but the specs are for the case mouth if going by the book. Not enough bearing surface is my main gripe. Love this cartridge either way
This channel is awesome! Very informative and very well done videos
Thanks for your awesome support. Matt and I are pretty average guys learning stuff along the way and he is a fantastic producer and videographer! We are truly blessed to get this opportunity and we can't tell you how much we appreciate the feedback. Be well and see you next time.
Good shooting and video.
Great video!! Thanks for giving the .357 Sig some love ❤️.. it’s a great caliber .. I hope it gains more popularity like 10mm did
No way close to power of A10!mm that gos slap Thur llla vest but a 44 mag wount or rest big boys s beast terminator round makes other look like wimps
Wth are you even talking about ?
Nice video man! I've been wanting a 357 sig barrel for my M&P 40 3.5" for a long time, but the aftermarket barrels are hard to find.
17 years with 357sig extremely satisfied
I just bought a 357 Sig and my birthday is March 10 1957 So 357 is a great pistol a Glock 357 Sig I paid $414,00
I fought 1,000 once fired nickel plated cartridges. You can save a lot of money reloading. I have a Glock and a P250 Sig and love the caliber.
Nice work.
How many classes has it went through? I dont mean a little safety ones i mean about 1000 rounds per class?
@@Dcm193 Absolutely ZERO. What's your point? That since I haven't had to shoot 1000 rounds over a weekend, I am not qualified to have a personal opinion?
@@whiplash8277 it doesn’t have to be exactly 1000 rounds but i mean hard use classes. How scratch up is the pistol?
@@Dcm193 None of my wheel gun .357's, of which I have owned 4 or 5 over my life, had more than 1000 rounds thru them. My .357Sig has had a couple hundred put thru it.
@@whiplash8277 then you have let those pistols down. Training is key
Find the strongest spring for your handgun guide rid and install it or buy a guide rod with spring with a really strong spring in it. It will mitigate the recoil considerably.
Love the channel and insight and the fact u are not anti .40
Really nice content!!🙏🏿🇺🇸
Great info. Thank you!
Great vid.. love my 357sig compact..no ya only need a Paul fancy jacket
I carry a Glock 32 as EDC and also have the P229 Legion and in both it feels just like a 9mm and it is more accurate at longer distances than the 9mm
You explain really good amazing video 🎉
I love how so many other pistols have been converted with 357 Sig match barrels.
I have a p226 with a reduced recoil spring and a comp…without all that the recoil is manageable, with those things the recoil is non existent it’s just loud which is probably what’s bothering most people
I would like you to compare 357 Sig and 357 mag with the same projectile grain
But what is with the blast and noise. I once have seen a review from Hickok45 about 357 Sig. There he said compared to 40 S&W he didnt like the noise and blast. So even with ear protection of course. I know that from 9mm 100gr loads from Magtech. They are rated with 1400fps and are very loud and unpleasend even with ear protection. Are there any LE that still use 357 Sig? The biggest agency was the Secret Service but I think the also switched to 9mm ?
1390 is great velocity for 125, I would be content with that.
This would be an excellent cartridge for a service duty SMG for sure! If I ran a country my security forces would be using these for sure! I don't even own a gun in this caliber bit damn I would If the ammo was more affordable!
I have 5 357sig guns 4 are sig Sauer p229 p226 p320 an p239 an a glock 31 glock is okay but UT looks an shoots like a box the p229 is my edc smooth shooter great carry gun I use a shoulder holster can't tell I'm carrying at all
Love 357Sig
I have a Sig P229 in 40 S&W with a .357 Sig conversion barrel and I actually like the 357 sig better then the 40.
