  • Do we need to warm up our voices? How long should we spend warming up? What are some good warm-up exercises? In this video, I answer these questions as I walk you through how I warm up my own voice (and the voices of my students). / singwisevocals

If there were a competition for best diction while speaking, you'd win.

I don't always warm up. I need to keep this in mind. Thank you for the information.

Thankfully I'm someone who doesn't need a lot of time to fully warm up most days. If I did, I'd be in big trouble because I don't spend much time warming up, either!

If I have a gig that night, I will warm up in sections throughout the day. I find I sometimes do better in several short spurts.

Yes! I always warmup! But yes, I do technical exercises throughout my day that I would not call warmups per se, but it must be said that warmups that I use and warmups in general are similar to technical exercises and sometimes even the same, but less demanding I.E staccato, octaves slides, twang descending scales and octaves.
But yes, agility exercises, more advanced staccato exercises, specific vowel resonance exercises on scales that are more technical and require more focus, and sostenuto exercises aren't ideal for warmups and should be relegated to technical work throughout the day only.

I find all I need to do to warmup is remind myself to respond sincerely and spontaneously in communication with people. Then again I'm not much of a singer, nor do I attempt to sing much at all. I'm always interested in improving daily communications though. I just have to remember to keep my voice pitched at least a bit higher even if it sounds a bit infantile in my own head.

ty for this! Looking forward to the practice vid. warming up vs. exercising the voice was never really discussed by my former vocal instructors so this vid really helps to clarify things for me!

I have a problem warming up, many times I just jump into singing right away and if I warm up I don't know wich warm up I should use or how exactly to warm up, there is a song I am trying to put together for a long time but I am so insecure, maybe because is my first song I have ever learned on my own, and I am just so scared to let anybody see me and hear me sing, when I practice I make sure no one is around listening, I always practice in my bedroom, thank you so much for your tips.

I've heard in CVT technique that the muscles around the vocal chords are many and small and it does not take much to warm them up and stretch them, especially as they are encased in the throat and are kept at a constant temperature of 37 degrees centigrade. So they say it is not necessary to warm up...

It isn't just those tiny intrinsic laryngeal muscles that need to be warmed up. The extrinsic laryngeal musculature and the breath management system often need a warm up, and sometimes the whole body needs some stretching to release the tensions of the day. Personally, I don't need a warm up if I'm singing in the late afternoon or evening, and can immediately jump into high and intense (e.g., belting) vocalizing without any negative consequences. But my voice definitely needs warming up if I have to sing in the mornings.

Thank you for your answer! :) I agree that it's maybe more important in the morning! :)

I always Always warm up. but singers need to realize the difference between warm ups and technical exercises. I hear a lot of singers warming up with technical exercises which are the same as warm ups. plus if you sing all the time you might not need to warm up for very long! just my experience!
