How To Replace a Honda K Series Serpentine Belt Tensioner

  • Is your Honda K series making a horrible screeching noise? It might be the serpentine belt tensioner. In this video I show you how to replace a bad serpentine belt tensioner on a Honda K series engine. I'm doing this job in a 2004 Honda Element, but this method should work for most Honda K series engines.
    Unfortunately I couldn't find the info on my former tensioner that went bad. This is the one I replaced it with.
    Dayco Tensioner: www.amazon.com...
    Hopefully it lasts longer than its predecessor. For best results, I recommend the Honda part, but it does come at a price.

    Quick tip. If this ever happens to you, there's no need to replace the entire tensioner assembly. You can simply unscrew the 14MM bolt in the center of the pulley and change just the pulley, that's what is making the noise. As usual, an OEM pulley is ideal. The part number for the pulley is 31180-RAA-A01 and it is currently about $30 from Honda.

      @gruberhoffman ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I wondered about doing this as there seems to be no problem with the tension part; it seems that my problem is a bearring issue with the pulley. I even wondered if pressing out the old bearring and installing a new one could be done without too much fuss on a 2003 Honda CRV.

    • @averyalexander2303
      @averyalexander2303 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@gruberhoffman If it was mine, I'd just get a new OEM pulley and be done with it. Replacing the bearing separately is theoretically possible, but in my opinion, the difficulty of finding one of the exact right size and the potential for a problem if something goes wrong is too high to take the risk when a new pulley is only about $30. If it fails, you will be stranded and ruin the engine if you don't stop right away before it overheats.

    Eric, I like your style of video! With the added words like 12mm etc. That helps a lot! I've done hundreds of those over the years. Some are easy, others not so easy. Every car is different. Many thumbs up from me, Eric! Great video! 👍👍 👍

    I miss the days when a "belt tensioner" was a prybar, a 1/2" drive ratchet, or hammer handle. And I had to WALK to the bus stop, uphill BOTH ways, in the snow! 😁

    One thing that wasn't emphasized enough is how long that 17mm stud is. As a DIYer who buys specialty tools ONLY when necessary, I don't have a set of EXTRA deep metric sockets. 75mm deep is needed. The ONLY socket I could find, that wasn't part of a +$150 set,was CTA Tools 1717 Extra Deep Socket - 17mm. Also for a DIYer to do what you did, they'd need to jack the car up, remove the left front wheel, lower the car on a jack stands THEN support the engine with the jack.
    I did mine without removing the motor mount. I tried a dozen times to get the belt where it needed to be and was stymied each time by a twist or slack I couldn't see that stopped me from being able to get it over the last pulley. Finally I folded the belt nearly flat and shoved it down between the tensioner and water pump with a stick. Then I pulled it down over the main crank, temporarily it looped over the power steering pump to keep it in line and couldn't fall or get twisted while I got the belt around AC compressor. Removed it from the power steering pump to get it around the alternator pulley, then went for the tensioner and power steering pulley.

    • @ZBS91
      @ZBS91 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Because over time the Tensioner itself can get worn out. It's a kill two birds with one stone scenario for a good safety and longevity moment.

    Anyone please chime in. Placing a support on oil pan is not a good ideal. The Oil Pan gasket will be compressed.
    Once you pulled the support out from the Oil Pan,you will later be getting oil leaks.
    Remember those Oil Pan's Bolts were torque down to correct amount.
    Because supported something that weights more then 90kg will deformed the gasket.
    Now bolts have not move at all & Oil Pan is now at non-compressed state...ending results with oil leaking out.

    Can these cause loss of power at idle and while driving? My crv 2010 has an odd sounding whine when it looses power during idle that I can hear happening exactly when the idle drops low. Wondering if belt tensioner/pulley being bad can torque down on the motor while running ??

      As for the story, I just read that this morning. I was trying to wrap my head around it as well. I had the same van if you remember. The only thing I can think of is that it was a freak accident involving the 3rd row seat. I'm thinking somehow he got trapped under it and it locked into position. A horrible way to go, not to mention his poor parents.
      My 2012 Odyssey has a different rear seat set up than the previous generations. Perhaps they saw the danger and made the correction. My heart goes out to his family.
      The real failure there was the rescue response. They simply didn't get to him in time. He called twice!

The noise goes away when turning right and gets worse when turning left. I replaced the front right on my CB7 which as you know is no easy task and now I have the same symptoms but it has always sounded like it’s coming from the front left. Should I just replace the front left wheel bearing and eat the cost or could it be something else. I should post a video so you can see it, or hear it actually.

    I had to do this to my old doge dakota. The ball bearings here falling out of the pulley. All i did though was change the bearing as i didnt feel like paying for an entire assembly. I learned that tick from you.

    Is that Dayco tensioner holding up? I have to replace the tensioner on a 2009 CRV. Thanks Eric

    Where do you jack up a 92 foxbody? Also do you place the jack stands on the pinch welds or else where? Thanks

    @Ericthecarguy i changed the tensioner assembly its all quiet until i put it on Drive and move the steering wheel that the new tensioner rattles and makes noise. What do you think i did wrong.

    I have an 05 CR-V with the same engine and I have some hesitation when going around 35-40mph. I'm going to clean the maf sensor and throttle body to see if that helps. I also want to replace the vtek spool gasket and screen. Would be awesome to see a video on changing those out. 😁. My issues could just stem from the damn thing having 313,400 miles! 😮

    I did the same thing with my rsx but now the belt isn't lined up straight, it squeaks while driving when its reset, then at high rpms the belt jumps and then isn't aligned right with the grooves. Any ideas?

    I'm so cheap I'd take the old tensioner take off the bearing seals and re pack with quality grease. Won't work as long as a new part but cheaper fix of course.

    Like watching a surgeon do an appendectomy. Bolt sizes and camera angles take extra effort and I for one appreciate it.

    Thanks for the video. Ever have to replace the main drive deal? I've got an oil leak that I'm pretty certain is coming from there.

    Did you have a bad engine or trans mount? That engine shook a lot when you started it.

  • @angelfernandez866
    @angelfernandez866 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    You dont have to take the whole motor mount out just the three bolts on top lift the bracket off and use a small rachet with a 12 long drive to get to that lower tensioner bolt. Remember to support the engine first.
