just a warning to any influencers, if a company asks you to install something onto your pc or phone that doesn't look reputable (eg. not from the app store or play store if on mobile) then it's most likely a virus or data mining program.
Such companies will copy reputable websites to make it look legit, and can also include keyloggers / ransomeware.
Installing such can snatch your TH-cam channel faster than you can say "why is my channel livestreaming Bitcoin"
@@maalik4982 Virtual machines do leave tells so an exploit can be coded so that the exploit won't run on a VM. VM busting or virtual machine escape does exist but extremely rare.

Rule #2: if the company asks you to pay for their product to then promote it, IT'S NOT A SPONSORSHIP. EVEN IF IT'S A DISCOUNT. EVEN IF IT'S A BIG DISCOUNT. EVEN IF IT'S A FREE PRODUCT, YOU ONLY PAY THE 45$ SHIPPING FEE.

I *almost* fell for one when I was younger and new to YT myself... but I was lucky enough to show someone who told me how fake it sounded... I felt like an idiot, but it's better than being the idiot who *did* fall for it :/
I have like 8 videos amd less than 50 views per vid, i still get email just straight up asking for my credit card details in exchange for "product"

I'm an artist and if there's one thing I'm dead set on it's that NEVER send the finished word without atleast HALF the payment.
As someone who occasionally needs to employ artists for projects, I figure it's an insult -not- to assume half-up-front. I'd never even suggest that to someone.

I run a wedding business (DJ, Photo Booth, Photography etc) and I always get calls from people wanting to advertise for me, my favorite was this foreign man who said that “he works for the Google” Lol.

I’ve gotten emails wanting to use my footage and the only thing they offer in return is “exposure”. Like bruh, I can’t use exposure to pay for my bills, thank you very much.

This should be required viewing for TH-camrs whose channels are starting to take off. This is a fantastic introduction to the pitfalls that a lot of us end up learning the hard way.
I started my own cosmetics company with my own formulas, and I had this one buyer who wanted to buy a bunch of my products at wholesale price, but with none of my labelling so that they could add their own and sell it in their store. On top of that, they also wanted a special discount. I told them in a professional manner that that is now how I do wholesale/ any sale and then I never heard from them again.
I also get a bunch of scammer emails from random instagram accounts and let me try your product for free for a review.
"Try our Windows Twitter client!" as you slide up your not-Windows having MacBook. 🤣
I don't know how these companies don't know about the *BCC* line so that the people they send emails to don't know about everyone else they send emails to.

i got a spam email saying a $700 amazon purchase i did not make was being delivered soon with a link to cancel the order. it was also sent to 50 different people. they were not the smartest

I'm an indie author, and I've gotten shady offers from "reviewers" and "publishers" who want to "distribute" my work. There was one reviewer who seemed really legitimate, but then after I did some research, and actually read her blog, I found out that she apparently scams a ton of indie authors by charging them obscene amounts of money to post a basic summary on her not even well-known blog (summaries that make it apparent that she didn't even read the book).
This feels like listening to someone read out my junk emails😅

I love following this kinda behind the scenes from very small youtuber to mid tier youtuber... to possibly in a while, big youtuber. I think this is the first time I saw someone actually showing how the sponsorship sausages are made.

I used to take character art commissions (like portraits or reference sheets) and I've never received any bad offers beyond the usual "hey wanna get paid in exposure?" stuff, but I have had to deal with plenty of overly personal communication with clients (is client the right word here? I just woke up). One in particular was very friendly, paid everything they promised and then went on to try and make friends with me by dumping every single problem in their life on me. I stopped responding completely after a while and it took them a month to catch on. I hope they're doing better now, and that they talked to a professional, because geez Louise that was a lot. Now, don't get me wrong, it's not a bad thing to try making friends even if the relationship started out as professional communication, but you really gotta let that sort of thing develop organically. I guess what I'm trying to say is, regardless of what service you offer or content you create, it's usually best to keep a courteous distance to the person/business/etc paying you until and IF you feel comfortable being friendly, for the sake of everyone involved.
I'd say lean into it and make it look like Dune. The salt must flow. The SALT must flow.

The fact you KNOW who some of the companies are just when they ask what they want.
I love how that one company advertising the Twitter client said their product helped to overcome Twitter's shortcomings... as though Twitter isn't itself one giant shortcoming.
I used to be the assistant to the CEO/chief designer of smaller but still high end clothing company that mainly dealt with cashmere. My boss would get toooons of emails in which companies would try to strike up very strange business deals and agreements. The biggest ones we'd get would be either fake, or just shitty, boutiques/shops/stores that wanted to carry our product, pay less than the wholesale price to stock it, and arrange so that they'd pay us on a shady 'oh we'll see how it sells' basis. For reference, that is not how anything works at all, ever.
Like I said, this was high end cashmere, the wholesale price of one sweater was usually over $100, and for heavier pieces we'd scratch $300+. I'd struck up legitimate deals of up to 30k-40k worth of clothing each season, but that was after several conference calls, meetings with sales reps, a plane trip in one case, and written contracts. Strangely, we never managed to strike that kind of deal with the 'if you're interested contact me on Whatsapp' crowd....
I also used to be on the 'can we sponsor you' end of the conversation, where I'd have to reach out to this week's fashion instagram hotshot and ask them if they wanted to talk about how nice our scarves are in exchange for a free $200 scarf and also some payment. As the one who had to type those emails up, I can say that the least these people could do is use the correct there/their/they're.

Tis just reminded me that I got two companies on insta trying to make me a brand ambassador and despite all the pitfalls I would have considered it, but they were all advertising an account they WEREN'T POSTING FROM and had 0 followers? Like ew no. If an ACTUAL PLACE hits me up I'll give em the time of day.

I work the inbox for a channel and im so relieved to see someone else talking about these creeps. I usually respond to them with absurdly high rates, then they back off. Also, I never send a brand to our writing team for the first draft of the ad until the brand sends me a contract to sign. Never proceed with a sponsorship until you get an insertion order, email chains are not binding!
I'm at like the weird part of depression where you aren't outwardly sad but you just dont like anything. But i like your channel so thanks

As an artist and crafter who regularly takes commissions, my favorite thing is when someone asks me to make something ridiculously large or extravagant and then gets upset when I tell them the cost.
The fact that so many scam attempts are for VPNs is both extremely ironic and totally not surprising.
While I'm not a content creator, I did start a PhD last year, and I got a new institutional email that went up on the university website. Now I get sketchy emails from predatory journals and bizarre companies that promise to find me jobs if I pay them an exorbitant amount of money 😐
This is actually very informative. Look at you Amanda, teaching the people about red flags. I for one like this content. I think it can help a lot of people who are in that positiion.

Oh, that makes WAY more sense.
Okay I really really needed this video because there were some small stuff that went over my head. I'm in no way going to be an influencer, my anxiety dictates I work behind the scenes, but getting a refresher on what to look out for is always nice. Sometimes it can be obvious, and other times it can be tricky. I use paypal as a way to get paid as I have more of a freelancer job with making pixel art.
One day I got an email stating it was from paypal and that my account was going to get shut down asap if I don't fill out my information on a site they provided. I kid you not I almost clicked the link, but then I realized that the situation made 0 sense. I then noticed that they didn't use my name and just said "Greetings from Paypal", they also didn't have the normal Paypal logo it was a generic P. I clicked out of it, laughed, and nothing happened after 24 hours. Then I got the email a couple more times, it can get annoying.
Not exactly a shady email story but I've been applying for jobs all over town including stable/barn hand jobs. One of these places that I applied to called me back and talked about possibly giving me a job at his barn. However during said call he was very vague about what exactly I would be doing, never saying "this is the job" but suggesting I come over to ride one of his horses and show that I know what I'm talking about. What really alerted me was when he gave directions he said "if I'm not at the barn I'm at my house here's how you'd get there". If I'm not house/pet/baby sitting for you, I'm not entering your home during a job interview. It stinks to pass up a potentially lucrative opportunity, but I generally like being alive and don't need to end up buried in the woods
I teach online using an app client designed for scheduling one on one sessions with American based students. The app itself is great, but twice so far I've gotten requests from people to go off client to zoom and teach an entire classroom full of students somewhere in another country with promises for 'better pay'. I have not accepted either of those offers.
I wish I was getting offered money. The only thing I have gotten offered is free artwork and a blow dryer lmao

Edited to add: I got 2 burgers instead of a drink. It was McDonald's (also a red flag). I profited from that interaction.
