  • It has been 20 years since the United States and its allies invaded Iraq in their “war on terror” amid claims that the country’s dictator, Saddam Hussein, possessed Weapons of Mass Destruction. Along with Baghdad, the dictator’s birthplace Tikrit, was quick to fall. But what has become of Tikrit, once a rich and flourishing town, in the 20 years since the invasion? FRANCE 24’s Lucile Wassermann reports.

Iraq’s democracy is very unstable. Their version of the parliamentary system does not answer to the people, particularly the protection of the minority Sunni. There are still a lot of scars from the Iran/Iraq war, the Iraqi Civil War from 20 years ago, then of course IS takeover of the region. Both sides have shed much blood over the past 40 years. i’m not even talking about the historical context of Ali and that the Shia believe he was martyred by the Sunnis. Democracies are all very unstable in the beginning, I believe in Iraq’s case that is even more true. I would not call it crimes, Iraq is particularly complex with the strange bureaucracy of the popular mobilization forces and the fact that nobody really wants to help them, crime is a little bit extreme.

As a British man I want to see Tony Blair in prison for his war. As for Iraq, the country needs peace but the people don’t seem to want to move on without settling old scores. Your country will never move forward to better times if you refuse to stop living in the past and accept that every human being on earth is equal.

Tony bears quite the responsibility but I think Dobbaya, Chaney and Karl Rowe are the OG bad guys in this story. Haliburton execs also. A group of people from here took out a full-page ad in the NY times to make it known to the world that this was not done with the acceptance of the Icelandic nation.

Why dont try saying that to the thousands of innocent people in iraq who had to see their family blown up. Their family members raped/tortured. Their businesses destroyed. Their houses bombed. It's very easy to say that from the comfort of your home.

You are wrong about one thing every one is not equal. Some have more brain power than others. Modern science has proven this as well look at it yourself some people just cannot be a Doctor or a Lawyer, some will never make it past just a tunnel vision only job for their minds are different for numerous reasons. I hate it when i hear someone say all people are equal. We are not. If I was equal to Presidents of America I would be rich but my pea bit of a brain bogs down when memory and comprehension comes into play. So a poor man I have been and a poor man I am.

Saddam's real geopolitical sin was threatening the oil supplies produced by the Gulf States, starting with Kuwait. The US could not let Saddam's army to proceed. The White House's problem was they could not bring themselves to chase down Saddam and then get out, turn govt over to the Iraqi Army. We could have saved ourselves a whole lot of trouble. The blood of our young American soldiers spilled for a personal feud between the Busch's and Hussein. Hussein and his sons were tyrants and no angels, maybe they deserved the fate they ultimately suffered however many thousands needlessly died. The area gave birth to Isis as a result of the power vacuum causing even more suffering, horrors, and death as a result. Ahh yes, Sadam was such a noble man. No persecution of minorities, nor did he ever invade Kuwait and Iran. You can't simply hop into any point in the history of the middle east and be able to comprehend anything. So many empires and wars, over thousands of years, created a massive web of chaos with short intervals of amazing growth.

A bit misleading to just look at Tikrit as people will extropolate to the rest of Iraq. This was an area that did not suffer under Saddam Hussein’s long and brutal dictatorship yet suffered after the US-led invasion. It might have been more meaningful to look at the country as a whole and sample opinions more widely. I doubt many would be wanting the US to come back but equally most wouldn’t want the previous regime either. Iraq’s future is in its own hands now.
