    I just replaced the cabin air filter on my 2004 Forester, and discovered that there had never been one in there. Apparently it was optional for a while, so dealers didn't install even though there is a space for it as shown here. Installation matched what is shown here, with addition of two more screws in the back of the glove compartment that need to come out to remove glove compartment. Very helpful video.

      veggiecat Same thing on my 03 Forester, no filter when I checked for the first time at 110,000 miles?! Wth? My dad's 04 Forester has no filter also when I checked at 93k miles. That's crazy that they don't put a cabin air filter in there.

    Thank you for this video short and sweet, just got an 04 forester x and was wondering why I was smelling so much fumes. I went to replace the filter come to find out it didn't even have one. The air is so fresh now thanks again

    I love it when I see the little pink tabs of the door weather stripping sticking out. Glad I'm not the only one.

    Thanks for this! Sadly, I didn't know cabin air filters even existed! Our local news channel just had a segment on cabin air filters. I can guarantee our two cars, the Subaru Forester and VW Jetta wagon, have a couple of NASTY filters!! They will be taken care of this weekend! Thanks for the video!

      You're welcome. Sadly a lot of people don't know that there car has a cabin air filter so they never get changed. Good luck with getting them replaced and thanks for watching.

    On the 2014 forester (2.5i premium) you don't need to remove any screw to remove the glove box. Disconnect the glove box damper on the right side of the glove box. Squeeze the side in and then pop off from the hinges.
    Of course I did this after removing screws and things weren't going well.
    Hope hope this helps.

    • @gaddisdm
      @gaddisdm 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Scott Trimble I'm doing this on my 2015 Forester (2.5iPremium). The older way to remove the whole panel by removing screws doesn't work anymore. The trim on the right side is more involved. The squeeze in and pop off method after sliding off the damper plunger pin took about 90 seconds. Thanks Scott.

We just had a guy come in with a Chevy truck that had the a/c compressor, a/c dryer, condenser all replaced somewhere else and turns out it just needed the cabin air filter replaced. The owner didn't know it had a cabin air filter and it was Never replaced since new and it was somewhere in the 250,xxx miles. It was caulked full of stuff. Is that some kind of other filter behind the yellow wire @4:23 ? This looks like the best video I've watched for this, however the other 3 I've watched said to point the arrow up? Hopefully the original filter will have a airflow indictor.

    I searched TH-cam for Subaru blower motor to find out about troubleshooting and possible replacement of blower motor. None of the videos applied to my 2003 Forester, they all had different blower motors and setups than mine. But as I watched this video I could see clearly that yours has the same blower motor as mine, the one with the square box at the bottom of it held by 4 phillips screws. Would be nice if I could find info about this as I need to get it fixed, snow is coming and I need the heat and defroster.

    • @TheDIYGuyDOTnet
      @TheDIYGuyDOTnet  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      What is going on with it? Not working at all? I would start by checking all the fuses I believe they are the first two in the inside fuse box. If the fan only blows on high there is a Resistor in there which when it fails will most of the time will let the fan run only on high as it bypasses the Resistor. The Resistor is the white box that the fan wiring goes into. Should be easy to locate. You might just want to pop those screws out and remove the fan and motor and clean and lubricate it. Try turning it by hand and see what it does. I have had some that have had a decent size mouse nest in there as they only used the car mostly as a winter car and it wouldn't let the fan turn.

    2009 forester turbo..bought used in very good condition last yr. well taken care of BUT just recent smell like dead mouse.,oil or propane smell? Some say burnt bacon? Idk....not sure of air filter was ever changed so I wil do that but IF it doesn't help the smell then what could it be. Car is in good shape.,quiet motor

    • @TheDIYGuyDOTnet
      @TheDIYGuyDOTnet  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You may find a mouse nest on top of the filter. Changing the filter might get rid of the smell. Smell it all the time? only when running it for awhile or when its cold? If it doesn't maybe an small oil leak somewhere next to the turbo, also could be the cam seals or the valve cover gaskets. Look at the exhaust for discoloration, and around the turbo for leaks. Not a raw gas smell? Have had a WRX that when it got really cold out the injector seals would seep and you would get the smell of raw gas.

      The newer Subaru's some you need to remove the glove box and other just have a fabric cover you just un-velcro and reach in and undo the cover and then install the new filter.

    how much does the air filter cost?

  • @veronicaw8105
    @veronicaw8105 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a 2012 Legacy and I have recently replaced the air filter under the hood. I don't know much about car so this might be a stupid question. My car has this weird smell when turning on the A.C, some one told me I have to change the cabin filter as well to get rid of this problem.Is that true?

    • @TheDIYGuyDOTnet
      @TheDIYGuyDOTnet  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Wow Pm Is it only when using the a/c? It depends on what kid of smell.. If its a moldly, musty, mildew, smokey or kinda human caused smell then replacing the cabin air filter should make it better. You can also buy the upgraded version with baking soda or carbon in it to really soak up the smell. If its an electrical or burning oil smell then the cabin air filter wont make that much of a difference.

    Why’d you use a 10377 as opposed to the 10745? The Fram website says we use 10745.

    • @TheDIYGuyDOTnet
      @TheDIYGuyDOTnet  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used that one as they didn't make the newer 10745 with the tray all as one unit. They were using the 10377 as a drop in replacement. So now that they make the 10745 you'd use that one. Even my link to the 10377 doesn't take you anywhere anymore.

      +Arin Roney It will be similar. You might be able to get at yours without removing or dropping the glove box. Open your glove box and see if you can spot the door. If not you will need to undo the travel stop for the glove box so it can swing way down and then you will be able to access your cabin air filter door.
