Ironically local Koreans don't typically shop in Dongdaemoon anymore. It used to be one of meccas back in 2005 ~ 2010 among young Koreans back in the days, but it definitely died down. Now, it's more like considered as one of tourism places to visit in Seoul.

"I love [country name]" is the most cheapest and laziest tourism shirt design of all time. I don't understand why people still fetch it for high prices.
One phrase helped me immensely while bargaining: Gaga-Juseyo. If you speak very little Korean with a bad accent they get a kick out of that and kind of open up a little; show their human side. Memorizing just a few phrases and numbers in Korean will get you much further much faster. Also, the street food is amazing as long as you pick the right thing - there's some pretty gross stuff. Even those bugs they eat.

The Korea ladies in the store were killing me! I loved shopping in Seoul. I was at Yongsan and we used to shop there, go to the clubs etc.. Itaewon was the place to go to.
It's hard to bargain in Korea because even most of wholesale items in KR are not cheap as other countries. I am Korean, but I can't even bargain like you. I want to give you hand for your bravery cause I can't even do that 😂

@Josh Arma Ikr, that's why she's a "modern day" beauty. Classical korean beauty would be looking like a dinner plate flat.
The reason why it’s a lot harder to bargain in Korea is because first of all its a developed country so that means living costs are a lot higher meaning the clothes these stores purchase to retail cost a lot more than places such as Thailand or some parts in China. So when you tried getting that shirt for 8, there would be no profit and they’d be losing a lot of money.
If you wanna do crazy bargaining, I don’t think Korea’s the right place but that’s my two cents.
I agree. And they don't sell things insanley more expensive to you just because you are a foreigner. The price they call first is kinda original price while in China, the price starts from 10x more expensive with foreigners.
Some random facts:
1. Reputation of Dongdaemun has been decreased. None of the Koreans around me go there for shopping.
2. I used to go there when I was a teenager more than a decade ago and that was the time when it was at its golden age
3. Some of them used to threaten young customers to make them buy their clothes. For instance, they will even escort you to the ATM if you got no cash so that you can't run away lol

1:42 "theres alot of price tags" , yes, foreigners have been ripped off way too much in the past, no store had price tags on at all and when I traveled to Korea the first time in 2008, everyone was doing that "its actually 120.000 won but we have discount right now, so it is only 70.000 won" ,typing on their calculator (they only knew "discount discount" though ,no more english than that lol) and when my korean friend asked for the prices later it was like only 20.000 won, so we didnt ask for prices ourselves anymore. also a few years later there was kind of a "price police for foreigners" walking around tourist shopping streets to try to prevent foreigners to be ripped off, and at some point it was not allowed to sell anything without a pricetag on anymore, though of course they put a little higher price in tourist areas so you can still try to bargain but not too much anymore as they dont put tooooo high prices on the Tags as korean people still should come and buy stuff and not run away after seeing the prices. though they often hide the higher price tags very well, but they put it somewhere in case police will come to check on them.
anyway, things improved alot in the past years, its also not allowed anymore to drag tourists into stores by shouting "window shopping window shopping" and forcing to buy anything as soon as you enter the store, also not allowed to drag girls into clubs anymore, MAN that was a pain in the asssss, had to save my friend when that club promoter dude wouldnt let go of her ,every club was trying to get us white girls into their club by force so they could brag about white girls being inside so that the guys would pay the entrance fees just to see us like some kind of Zoo. (yep, that was 2008 when after 2 weeks in Seoul I didnt see a single white person anywhere around, not even in myeongdong. we were like rare monkeys (or russian prostitutes) to them.. lol)

Been travelling to a lot of countries and been bargaining a lot. I found South Korea and Japan to be the hardest to bargain. Another one is Qatar (but this one I was in a hurry so I didn't really try hard).
