    Went to this as a 15 year old thinking it was a spy film. Little did I know that this excellent film would be the beginning of my political consciousness. I didn't understand it, but was enthralled. I read the book but it still took years before the full impact of what was contain in this celluloid took effect. Now I consider one of the top 3 films I have ever seen.
    I had the chance to go to a lecture by Vasillikos who wrote the book and didn't go. I kick myself to this day.

      I saw it in a a theater in 1969 or 70, when it was first came to the US. I was in college. I was floored and outraged since I saw much of the same here from the establishment right wing. I see it now, but it is Antifa and the establishment, far-left Dems who wear those shoes. The establishment deep state protects itself no matter who has been in power. Not since they took Jack, Bobby, and Martin - then Reagan - have we had even a small chance to defeat it. But, this time DJT has a chance ....

    • @tarisio1
      @tarisio1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@jfhunt Wow. I too saw it in a theater in my youth in college. I was also floored and outraged, and it probably was the most important political film of my life. But I STILL see this as coming from the right, the new cultured neo-Nazi's like Stephen Miller and DJT (and Barr)are the enablers that allow this to flourish. It is hard to believe we are living on the same planet, having digressed so far since then. Antifa is fairytale, a unicorn, which even as a non-existent organization, with no structure or leaders except as an "idea" opposed to fascists, would have nothing in common with the "Deep State".

    At the time of release, Chicago Sun-Times film critic Roger Ebert, who named Z the best film of 1969, liked the screenplay and its message, and wrote, "[Z] is a film of our time. It is about how even moral victories are corrupted. It will make you weep and will make you angry. It will tear your guts out...When the Army junta staged its coup in 1967, the right-wing generals and the police chief were cleared of all charges and 'rehabilitated.' Those responsible for unmasking the assassination now became political criminals. These would seem to be completely political events, but the young director Costa-Gavras has told them in a style that is almost unbearably exciting. Z is at the same time a political cry of rage and a brilliant suspense thriller. It even ends in a chase: Not through the streets but through a maze of facts, alibis and official corruption."[5]
    In 2006, James Berardinelli wrote, "Z was the third feature film from Greek-born Costa-Gavras, but it is the movie that captured him to the world's attention, winning a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. It introduced the director's signature approach of combining overt political messages with edge-of-the-seat tension."[6] Jonathan Richards wrote in 2009, "It's hard to overstate the impact that this Oscar-winning procedural thriller had in 1969, on a world roiling in political activism, repression, and discord. In the U.S., the Vietnam War was on the front burner, the populace was passionately engaged, and the police riots outside the '68 Chicago Democratic Convention and the murder of Black Panther Fred Hampton were raw wounds. With this stylish, intense indictment of the assassination of a leftist political leader by a right wing government cabal in his native Greece, director Costa-Gavras struck a nerve that resonated here and around the globe."[7]
    On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a 95% "fresh" score based on 39 reviews, with an average rating of 8.2/10. The site's consensus states: "Powerfully effective, this anti-fascist political thriller stands out as both high-conscience melodrama and high-tempo action movie."[8]
    The film was selected to be screened in the Cannes Classics section of the 2015 Cannes Film Festiva

    To this day, nine movies have the shortest titles ever, all with one single letter. Costa-Gavras’ “Z” (1969) is one of those. Quite a record❕
    The meaning of “Z” : At the very end of the film, a message states : “Also the military regime banned […] the letter ‘Z’ which means ‘He is alive’ in Ancient Greek.”
    “Z”* was 1) the first motion picture to be nominated by the Academy for Best Picture and Best Foreign Language Film; 2) the second non-English film in Academy history to be nominated for Best Picture, after Jean Renoir’s “The Grand Illusion” (1937).
    “Z” has inspired the work of - at least - two famous directors, namely Oliver Stone and Steven Soderbergh.
    Unsurprisingly, Costa-Gavras’ political thriller** is included in “1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die”, edited by Steven Schneider.
    Three main stars passed away in 2022, a couple of months from each other : 🌹 Jacques Perrin (April 2022), 🌹 Jean-Louis Trintignant (June 2022) and 🌹 Irene Papas (September 2022). 💚🎬💙
    * Many minor roles were played by members of the crew for budgetary and logistical reasons. In the end, it paid off though, since the motion picture grossed some $ 17.3 million in the USA alone.
    ** “Z” was based on the 1966 eponymous novel by Vassilis Vassilikos.
