  • The 4th day of my tour in Tuscany was porbably the best day of the trip so far. I got to experience two old medieval towns, San Gimignano and Montiriggioni as well as the bustling city life of Siena.

    Another beautiful area. Who could resist having all that fine food. You have hit your stride now. The video's have been perfectly balanced between views, history and biking. Take care, Al

      Thanks for the feedback Al. I'll make a mental note for when I'm editing the coming videos. Next video is going to be great, it was by far the best day of the trip. Maybe not so much historical stuff, but the views surely made up for it. See you next week!

    Fantastic video - It made me feel like I was cycling along. The winding roads, canopy of trees, villages. Then the walk through the villages and night walk in the city. Everything I crave. Thank you!!

      I made an effort to try to enjoy life outside of cycling this time around. During previous trips I've been so focused on putting in the miles (or kilometers) that I sometime forget to experience every day life around. I think this makes for a more dynamic video as well, not just cycling from morning to sunset.

    Thanks for another fine installment. As an avid cyclist myself it's interesting to me that the sound of your bikes hub clicking as you walk your bike is like ASMR for this fellow cyclist. Very relaxing...lol. Looking forward to the next video.

    Such a beautiful day visiting those charming medieval towns and enjoying delicious Italian food and wine. Can't wait to get to Italy. BTW that swim cap doesn't look all that bad, haha. Thanks for the video!

    Nice, Mike. BTW, those pizzas looked great at the end of your video! I couldn't have passed up a slice either! :-) In fact, I probably would've purchases 1-2 more slices for breakfast and lunch the next day! Sienna is beautiful. I visited it many years ago and was lucky enough to see one of their twice-annual Palio horse races. Stay safe out on the roads and I hope you are loving your tour! Cheers!

    Thank you for sharing Mike and also bringing back happy memories of cycling in Tuscany. Although you found San Gimiginano busy, I have never seen it so quiet, Lonely Planet says it is best to visit after 4pm when the tourists have gone and stay overnight. I have only seen Monteriggioni from the main road, it was good to see the inside of the town and it certainly looks good. I'm looking forward to seeing your next instalment and hope you are enjoying Tuscany.

    Italia is a wonderful place to experience awonerful culture and people. But when in Rome do as the Roman’s do. It has been many years since I have been there. Night trains were crowded, smoking in non-smoking and they threw their trash out of the train windows. Of course I had just come from Switzerland which was a stark contrast. That is the great thing about Europe . When you cross a country border you experience a whole new culture. Regardless I will go back and bikepacking. Love the espresso,cheese and wine. Strolling on the streets and hanging in the the piazza’s is romantic. You should have taken your wife. And one cannot forget all the art.

      @@BikeTouringMike many thanks Bud!! Washington state and particularly the Olympic Peninsula and the islands just off the coast (San Juan, Orca, etc...) are really beautiful and we would recommend it. The beauty in Washington as well as in Oregon are the campgrounds because they offer hiker/biker spots and they're way cheaper than your normal campsite. Plus they have a no turn away policy for those of us crazy enough to cycle or hike there. Cheers bud and happy cycling. ~Ron

    Hi Mike, very beautiful video! I see that you have taken an adapter to charge electronics in campsites here in Italy. In our past travels in southern Sweden, we never needed them in hotels, but thinking about a trip to northern Sweden: are the power sockets in the bungalows or campsites like ours in the hotels, or need some kind of adapter? Congratulations again! ... Waiting for the next one, Giancarlo

    • @BikeTouringMike
      @BikeTouringMike  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Giancarlo! Sorry if I was confusing you. But you will probably not need one of these adapters if you're staying in a bungalow here in Sweden or Italy. It's only if your staying in a tent or campervan/RV. Take care!

    Hi Mike I have a Solar panels which I hang on my rear rack between panniers charges my 30000 ah battery pack in strong sun usually in 5-6 hours. Saves a lot of hassle charging as you ride.

    • @BikeTouringMike
      @BikeTouringMike  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you have a large solar panel? The only experience I've had with solar panels involve a small 6W panel that took forever to charge even a 10 000 mah battery. So I rarely use it anymore. And up here in Scandinavia it's pretty useless anyway, since we have a low standing sun. But if you're in a place with a lot of sun I guess it's a bit different.

    Thank you for this video. Such a beautiful area. I did notice one thing we have in common. When you were swimming, it looked like you were doing the breaststroke. That is what I used to swim in school when on swim teams. Hope you had a big breakfast.

    • @BikeTouringMike
      @BikeTouringMike  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In Sweden we're taught breaststroke as our default way of swimming, both in school and in swim school. I think it's based on some study that teaching people to swim breast stroke saves lives or something like that. I can swim crawl as well, but not as well since I learned it when I was an adult.

    Brilliant ride video as always. Enjoyed those beautiful old cities with rich history & culture. Also the splendid evening with those delicious meal. Absolutely awesome. How much is the campsite for a cyclist ?

    • @BikeTouringMike
      @BikeTouringMike  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was about 16-18 Euros. But then again this was during low season, so it's probably another 10 Euros during high season.

    Hi Mike. I love watching your videos. Riding a bike in another country is challenging and a real adventure. I have a question ... how much money do you need on average per day, specifically Italy? Some of the cheapest options? Have a nice day.

    • @BikeTouringMike
      @BikeTouringMike  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I will talk about this in a video after this series has finished. But just on top of my head, I think I managed by on about 40 Euro per day for campground fees and food (restaurants and supermarkets)

    We loved this episode, and hope the Tuscany Tourists Board are paying you well. Slightly disappointed not to see the Foppatofflas though. Have you ever tried olives fresh from the tree? Almost as delicious as Rowan berries. Freddie was impressed with your breaststroke.

      Haha, I didn't bring my goggles, so I couldn't give it my all. I couldn't find my Foppas when I was packing my gear, so I had to settle on flip flops instead. Just glad that it didn't rain during the trip 😉

    Great video! I'm thinking of touring the area around Siena soon and doing the same thing of camping in designated camping spots. A question came to mind while watching your clip going into Siena by bus: what did you do with your bike and panniers at the campsite? Was there a place to store them securely?

    • @BikeTouringMike
      @BikeTouringMike  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just put all my gear inside of my tent and locked the bike to a tree. I knew leaving everything meant that I was taking a risk. But my rule is always to go with your gut feeling, and my feeling told me I would be fine leaving the gear at the campsite. I got a campsite that was a bit off from other campers but still not to off, I had a couple of neighbors around me in small tents like me, and after sitting down for a while and studing the people around me I usually get a feel of the place and make my decision based on that. I did however bring a backpack with me into town, with my most valuabe things, such as all my camera equipent, my drone, passport and so on...

    The restaurant on the right at 9:06 is probably the worst restaurant I've been in my life :) Waited 2 hours and 20 minutes for food to get cold, too salted and really overkill expensive dish. Highly don't recommend to anyone ;D
