I am currently rereading the original, and you are exactly right as to the chapter in the book. It is extremely enjoyable to read the text description of what is going on, and then to actually see how it is carried out in anime form. The screenwriters of this anime clearly like the character of Xuan Gu. In the novel, as he was about to die at the hands of Hanli, Xuan Gu was begging and humbling himself, saying or doing anything to stay alive. He did that here in the anime too, but he did it with more dignity. In the end he accepted his death and died somewhat gracefully. There has been a lot of changes to the plot in making this anime adaptation, but most of the changes have been necessary. In fact I like the Hanli in the anime a bit more than the hero in the novel. The screen version is a bit more compassionate and human. The book version is more single-minded in his pursuit of immortality.

In the original novel, yes he’s 100% dead! The little monkey engulfed his soul. But in this animation series, no, he’s not fully dead! He had hidden a very small fragment of his soul in the tomb where he was imprisoned
He already tried to stay alive by hiding his soul-spirit in that bone, but he was sniffed out by Hanli and the little spirit beast. It was sort of a shock to see someone as devious and meticulously in planning actually die. But in the original novel, he really died here. Basically he underestimated the number of Golden Thunder Bamboo that Hanli had. In theory, only 2 or 3 existed in the known world, and it should have been impossible for Hanli to have more than that. He thought that Hanli had exhausted his reserve of this powerful talisman, and so he could kill Hanli. Little did he know that with the mysterious little bottle of energy liquid, Hanli could cultivate and create the number of Golden Thunder Bamboos to an unheard-of amount. He thought that Hanli had very little energy left from this talisman. But Hanli had a total of 72 of these, FAR more than he expected. He died for his miscalculation.
