New format idea: no card that has ever been in a Yu-Gi-Oh top 8.
Pretty sure that already exists with Rogue's Format, except I believe they go beyond just Top 8.
That's called Heart of the Underdog, but its not a standardized thing, just something locals can do and still count as an official format to let the shop give out ots packs.
probably rogue combo decks dominate, since a lot of them have super strong end board and this idea would phase out most relevant handtraps

Turns out the problem isn't hand traps or bullshit combo decks but the decks that can play 18 handtraps and *still* do their bullshit combo with consistency
Yep. Engine design ruined Yugioh. Hand traps were the good guys.
Handtraps have ruined yugioh. Because of them cards and engine have been designed to go around free instant interaction, meaning they had to plus more and more to see play. It's just too late in the process to ban handtraps.
@@kenestebanez4777 Nah, handtraps kind of saved yugioh from full negate boards and making the game unplayable by going second decks. The game would become way more fun for both, going first and going second, players if the ways to achieve a sub-optimal board would require two cards from an archetype in hand instead of one searcher to get a full board
And yes, increasing the chances of both players to brick or getting their combo starter shut down with one handtrap and having to make due or wait for next draw is WAY better than seeing who has enough negates to make your opponent lose. Most fun matches I've had were either rogue on rogue deck(still with handtraps) or playing on topdecks

People simply DO NOT UNDERSTAND what kind of absolute bullshit underused decks can do, or how toxic they can be.
They aren't played because they die to the consistency checks that current meta decks can play around.
Not only that, but if a format like this was let to cook for any significant amount of time, a new meta and new staples would form that people would complain about all the same.
This shxt is tame compared to the meta's weve had.
This is why I don't like rogue. It's usually the unfun nonsense that gets filtered by hand traps.

"Cards that are incredibly iritating like Ash Blossom and Droll & Lock Bird have become load-bearing."
I'll go one step further and say that they're load-bearing due to their own design. All these decks were either printed at the same time as or after Ash, or rely on new support printed since Ash. The presence of uninteractable cards that have the potential to stop a play dead means that decks now need so much gas to compensate for their existence that if your archetype doesn't have at least a half-dozen one card combo enablers and another 20 pieces of extension that you're not considered good.

Muck RAKER, she''s a reporter, she rakes muck!
What I have learnt is you can't remove the handtraps from the game without lowering the ceiling of like every deck.
This reminds me of an idea I have for Yugioh that I've mentioned before and will mention again. MTG has a format called Canadian Highlander, a 100 card singleton format which allows you to use cards that are Limited in Vintage format, but those limited cards all have a point value associated to them; a deck can only have so many points, I forget the exact number. It makes me wonder if a points system would work in Yugioh as well, but instead the points go towards certain generic and powerful cards. For example, Ash Blossom and Imperm would probably be worth one point each. Droll is a pretty impactful card in the right situations, so it would be worth two. Big generic boss monsters like Baronne and Accesscode I can see being at three. These are just examples of how I think points would be distributed, not a concrete rule, and obviously anything like this would need a looooooot of playtesting.
I remember the Pokemon trading card game video game having a deck capacity
Dread it, run from it, a cracked fluffal will always put up numbers in a custom format tournament
No joke, No lie, Yugioh needs a tiering format like Competitive Pokemon. I would LOVE to see Yugioh UU so badly.
Yugioh ZU would be the whackiest crap ever
It exists, it's called Kuchen format (although it is more like Smogon)
Tiers don't exist in Official Competitive Pokemon either, it's only in Smogon that those exist.
Pokemon tiers don't work with yugioh as yugioh gets new cards constantly and has a card pool in the thousands and has archetypes designed to be played with and against staples. There won't be enough data to make an accurate system and trusting the subjective assessment of people only works in niche instances like the Master Duel meme events and MBT tournaments.
Magic has 5 different formats, but only 2 are completely degenerate and not really supported by the company beyond swinging around every 6 months to ban problem cards that they printed because those formats are suppose to be degenerate. I don't know if this proves what you think it does. Handtraps are great and all, but the problem is every deck can just endlessly special summon. Assuming you had a handtrap to slow your opponent down, you made them pass and then you can do your combo turn 2. It ends up being only one additional turn with the handtraps in your deck too.
This is so sad...
And these plays are all things that are perfectly legal in current Yugioh and that you will still lose to if you didn't draw the right hand trap before you got a chance to play the game.
Honestly as annoying as hand traps are, that dark world deck as well as the other decks to some degree, showed me that we definitely need them to make yugioh work in the state that it’s in currently.
Or you could (for example) just ban Silva and perhaps Ceruli? The lesson here is that handtraps are bandaids at best.
@@minabasejderha5972 The issue with how MBT specifically runs his tournaments is that he goes for variety of decks, from a group of volunteers from his twitter, rather than organically allowing the format to come together by giving people more than just a heads up a day or two in advance.
I want agree but Konami literally made the cards that allow for the consistent hand loop in the last 2 years. There's no reason for them to make cards like this in the modern era, yet here we are. As a previous hand trap hater, I have come to the conclusion that hand traps are for the better. Sure its fun to redo the same combo you memorized every game, but leaving the second turn player helpless to stopping the first turn player's plays isn't much better. Especially now. I do disagree with the idea that you should be able to go full combo like Snake Eyes on either turn, but stuff like Fluffals and Labrynth seem fair. And before anyone says that Labrynth does a lot on either turn, its balanced by the fact that most of the setup doesn't come into play until next turn since its a trap deck. They kind of need it to make traps fast enough to keep up with a lot of other decks.
Oh yeah. Hand traps are desperately needed right now. Problem is that they're absolutely essential for everything to not turn into a cluster fuck in the first place reflects poorly on the state of the game and Konami's management of it.
either supporting older time wizard formats or completely blowing up the singular format game would be for the better.
Its sad that a card as degenerate as Droll is now as necessary as Ash Blossom. Wasn't that long ago when people thought that a format that played Droll was a bad format. Now its in EVERY format
I get what you're trying to say, but Mourner and Ogre are currently much more popular than Droll.
Current top meta decks don't even get hit by Droll that hard, because they can still atleast put up an I:P into S:P while also having their ~16 Non engine to keep them in the game, so then they'll just fish for the other half of their decks, which consists of one card starters.
Droll and Nib are the formats Security to keep out degen decks like handloops, ftks, floo, or combo decks than end on an pretty much unbeatable endboard. They're also a way for Rogue decks to beat other Rogue decks, so they can focus the rest of their deck & sideboard on beating the top meta threat, however that unfortunately works just as good for the top meta threat aswell, so it can focus on the mirror match instead.

@@tame1773 There's also some decks where every card is good, but there's not enough of them or some of the cards only do one thing even if they do it really well (Libromancer comes to mind)
They're both the problem. Handtraps put a stranglehold on card design that says 'your deck must have *this much* gas to be playable', while new engines actually have the gas to play through handtrap to the point that removing them leads to degeneracy. You can't remove one without removing the other, but removing both would require a lot of work and a colossal banlist, so instead we're stuck in a perpetual arms race where neither one can be removed.

that pend v zoo game 2 had me on the FLOOR
Its interesting using a tournament appearance % to ban cards.
It would be cool to look at tournaments across the last 3 years, maybe in sets of 8:
Looking at card appearance rates in top 4, top 16, top 64 across the 8 major tournaments based on side deck, main deck, extra deck then using different usage % at each level (top 4/16/64) to limit/ban. Then doing it for every set of 8 tournaments in the last 3 years, keeping the most sever restriction. Maybe add a honorable mentions logic section where you go in and ban/limit cards yourself. Then add in the ban lists during those 3 years and adjust the restrictions based on if it is more sever then the current bans.
To be fair I am willing to bet the deck list between this and that would be pretty similar.
the people talking about "wow I loved the variety! So much better than seeing Kash/Tear/Snakeyes mirrors!" don't seem to realize that you picked different decks so OF COURSE there's "diversity" in this tournament. But if it was a real format, it would quickly get centralized like anything else.
In fairness, it's at least partially people aren't just sick of seeing "Just three decks" but THOSE three decks, even if it'd probably centralize in a month or two, it's still somewhat refreshing to be seeing decks other than Tear, Kash and Snake-Eyes

I actually have so much respect for the non 15 min U link combo zoo deck after watching this... holy

Yu-Gi-Ohs ruined again lets go!
Well, Joseph, you convinced me. Hand traps are a necessary evil.
Glad so see a deck like that becoming the champion. For me, it portraits a nice Yu-Gi-Oh way of playing.
Personally I would slightly reduce the hand trap density. Not eliminate them, but a few less.
Put a hard limit into handtraps. Don't yet them all together...
@@philithegamer8265
Okay then so everyone just plays the best ones that reach the widest and don't both playing the niche ones because it's not safe enough to try.
This is why Yu-Gi-Oh needs a Pokemon-like Smogon list, not a ban-list.
Limit what cards can be in powerful archetypes and unlimit cards in weak archetypes. Yu-Gi-Oh deck diversity problems are more alike the Pokemon VGC than any card game on the market.
Also lets you play your favourite deck, which is actually a big reason Smogon's tiers exist.
I can’t wait to play Edison RU
Smogon formats aren't official and themselves have shown to have terrible cracks in the system as it went on
@@GG_Nowa Yeah, both VGC and Smogon certainly have their own fair share of problems. It is nice when a mon you like is doing something somewhere though.
@@GG_Nowa Ehhh, I disagree. As a whole, yes the system isn't perfect. The idea is good though, try to make a format as diverse as possible by limited who can use what.
Smogon is not flawless and I get the arguments against a format like it, but it's far, far better than any "balance" Nintendo has ever done. Incineroar is still one of the best Pokemon 7 years after its hidden ability was released.
To put this into perspective, that's like Konomi never hit Zoodiac and Zoodiac never dropped below a tier 1 deck, EVER. Since it's printing, it would flux between tier 0 and tier 1 across 7 years. So why rely on a company not trying?
I personally think a ban, limit, semi-limit list works better when there are less than 1500 cards in the game, not over 15,000. Just like Pokemon, to help keep the community engaged, it needs a different idea than just "no one can use this."
Mbt fans try not to be insufferable challenge impossible
LETS GOOOOO
I LOVE FLUFFALS!!!!!
Also I love when MBT sounds like an auctioneer.
The danger darkworld duels felt miserable
"I ruined yugioh" he says, making a format I'd actually like to play
Why this looks horrible?
If Silva, secret village and at least one of the two "the pendulum" links were banned I would agree. The less infinite recursion with a shutdown of one of the three card types in the game Pendulum has, and the less I have to deal with Dark World ripping my hand to shreds, the better.
I also want to say that banning Dark Ruler would be nice, but it being more of a check on overextension makes me doubt if removing it would be for the better (also it requires proper follow-up or you just die to the crackback).
Also, that Fluffal deck (with the bullshit and all, vs the godless stuff that was in the tournament at least; otherwise maybe dweller or toad eating it would be fine) definitely looked very nice, would like to play it.
@@KuroeNezumi Dark Ruler No More _needs_ to be legal at 3 copies at all times. Just get rid of the busted Extra Deck Monsters that give you floodgates and negates that are too accessible and get rid of all the busted handtraps outside of Maxx C, Infinite Impermanence and Droll and Lock Bird and limit Called by the Grave to one copy...
@@philithegamer8265
Savage and barrone are banned.
Maxx c is banned because its busted.
I would like to see something like this again. I think that trying to create a meta without handtraps is a good idea, it's just that a lot of decks that are stopped by handtraps from being toxic slipped under the radar from this current list.
There seem to be a lot of YGO players who think like this and I really do not comprehend how far down the list you want to go before you find these alleged nontoxic decks. The game is incredibly fast and even rogue decks are very consistent if they play through 0 interrupts
@@smiletoday5696 And that's because they got addicted to print "from your deck" to every single card.
@@smiletoday5696 I'd be willing to lose 1000s of cards if need be. Is it infeasible for such a list? Yes. I still think it's an interesting idea to strive for.
@@cturtle4573 at that point are you not just completely curating the game to telling people to play a specific deck? At that point just doing theme decks is probably more fun and less confusing.
@smiletoday5696 They want to go all the way back before hand traps were commonplace, because every deck since has been created with them in mind. At that point you're just playing a time wizard format lol
That first match with Dark World genuinely hurt my head.
Gotta make this a series and lower the % bar lower and lower to see what comes out of it :D
such a good video. "here, you're not allowed to play anything remotely meta. this is what you wanted!"
This is delusional.
Power creep means that whatever CURRENT meta cards get banned, they will be powercrept by previous meta cards. It's mostly like normal duels from 2 years ago.
It's delusional because it doesn't address the overpowered cards, but ONLY the TOP overpowered cards.
Horus, Bagooska, Zeus, Chaos Angel... all powerful cards still allowed in this video.
@@user-jc2lz6jb2e bro why did you have to reply to MY comment. who hurt you?
@@MattIsAMage You said "this is what you wanted". That's dishonest.
Why are you weaseling out of addressing my points.
@@user-jc2lz6jb2e Well, what did you specifically want in that case then?
@@sigma190beta I already said it in the first reply.
Remove the overpowered cards. ALL of them, not just the top ones.
Dragon Rulers don't stop being overpowered just because they got powercrept. Zeus doesn't stop being overpowered just because he has like 10% usage instead of 15%.
Honestly these are some of the more dynamic duels I've seen in a long time. So yeah lets keep pushing for this type of ban list. Also gotta love how unbanning a lot of Pens best cards always leads PePe style dickery. So maybe next time also hit Pend.
Genuinely, what the fuck are you talking about?
Dynamically losing to Full combo I couldn't play around in most cases.
You know, while I get the point he's making here, the idea that Fluffal is what rises to the top if you ban every current staple and tier one card doesn't sound that bad to me.
The handtraps aren't the problem. Extemely powerful entire engines being 20 cards or under is the problem.
