Hi Jennifer! If this was your first attempt at swing, great job getting the "swing feel" and matching Grappelli's vibrato technique! As a swing violin player who tries to emulate Grappelli, I would like to offer some constructive criticism about a couple small moments during the piece. - There is a C, A, C, A, pattern at 0:54-0:55. It sounds like you played it straight, where the Cs were on the 1 and As were on the 3. I hear the Cs on the 1, but I hear the As on the "and" of 2 -- so I hear the As a little bit before when you played them. I have heard this classic swing rhythmic pattern referred to as "the Charleston rhythm". - Another thing I noticed is that there were some vibrato notes you played sort of long that I believe are cut short in the recording - I am thinking of the D note at 0:19, the C note at 0:23, and the C notes at 0:53. - The last thing I wanted to mention is that the open G at 1:21 should be slurred from the preceding A because it is produced by Grappelli using the ghost note technique - so it would never be a separate bow. Thank you for sharing your music, it's great stuff!
Thanks so much for your constructive feedback, Roger. Much appreciated! And yes, this was my first attempt at playing this type of music with the "swing feel". :)
Roger, your possibly missing a point…it’s improvisational music, and Grappelli in his 80s told would-be disciples not to treat his music like a museum piece. People learn his solos as a learning tool, to later riff off as they find their own lines and rhythmic expression. it ain’t oldtime where we replicate recordings verbatim
If that's your first attempt at Gypsy Jazz violin it's ********* brilliant! I've got some (free) backing tracks on Bandcamp if you'd like to play it without Grappelli ;-)
Thank you so much!! I just checked... I think it's slightly sharp of A=440, but not TOO far off. You can just tune up a bit and it should be fine. Have fun!
@@JenniferRoigFrancoli I'm a guitarist looking for a violinist to play with....but I live in Florida. Do you know about "Django in June" in Mass. each year? Cancelled this year unfortunately for obvious reasons.
Thanks! No, I don't know about it. Too bad it's cancelled. I'm not playing any more gypsy jazz at the moment, but you never know. All best to you, Rick!
Sounds great. Do you recommend any particular books or learning materials that focuses on this genre - or can a violinist basically grab a Real Book and just play with the style?
I've only dabbled and gotten some help from a friend. Sorry I have no more help to offer in this regard... other than: listen to Stefan Grappelli a LOT! :)
Dear Jennifer, hello, I'm going to make a cover for Minor Swing, where for the Violin part I will use your video. I will include Links and Resources. Do you allow me? Gracias 😁
Thanks for your feedback! If I'd been playing gypsy jazz for most of my life like Grappelli - and not just 2 weeks - I'd probably be more relaxed, too. :) But learning how to live and make music with less tension and more ease is actually my specialty, and I'm always interested in improving. it's all relative. I'm much less tense in this video than I was a decade earlier; and I'm much less tense today than I was back in 2019 when I made this video. We all do our best. Have a great day!
Very well done!
Thank you very much!
Bravo Chapeau Youpppppppppi Wow !!!!!
Thank you so much! :)
Gracias por sacarle una sonrisa a mi doliente corazoncito, querida Jenny!! ❤ bello!!

Dear Jennifer, you're doing really well! I am also a musician and used to play with a jazz band. Thanks for the video.

NICE IMPROV, Jennifer!
Thank you! I wish I could say it was improv, but I was just imitating what Grappelli does! :)
@@JenniferRoigFrancoli WhatEVER! It sounded fabulous! Why don't I sound like that when I imitate Grappelli!! LOL

Très belle sonorité votre violon madame ...
Merci beaucoups!
Really fine! Were the guitar and violin on entirely separate tracks so you could play as with Django Reinhardt?
Good very good.

You are so good 😭
Thanks, Emanuele! :)
I could have listened to several hours of this
very good! Did you learn this by ear, or, did you find a transcription? This violin part was originally composed (improvised) by Stephanie Grappelli.
Thanks! My son found a transcription online.
I LOVE YOU!
Her agent should contact Scottsdale Center for the Arts and MIM. They definitely would book her .

Sorry, do you have the sheet music?
I can just picture all the hip gypsy musicians in a 1930-1940's caravan, playing this tune.
It's all too tense. Stephanne was always so relaxed
