This was a thing long before TikTok. I was on Tower of Terror back in 2016 and a couple of kids did this. The ride stopped when we were pushed into the drop and an announcement told them to let go of their belts and they could see you even being in the dark. They pulled the ride down, made us all get off, kicked them off and put the remaining of us on the next one. It's a stupid thing to do really.
You know how it is, if it's on TikTok, then it's "new," even though it was around before.
For example, some guy on TikTok just recently discovered that Kevin's ticket in "Home Alone" (1990) was thrown in the trash, yet it has been known since the movie came out, yet a bunch of articles were written about his "discovery," but it seems no one did their own research to see that it has been known for years as well as written about!
My dad had some people try that too, when it was still Tower of Terror.
He went there as a single rider while I stayed behind with my Mom because she was too scared to go on.
They kicked these people off and gave the remaining riders another go. He said that a lady mentioned she thought one of them would fall on her, which could’ve ended up pretty badly.
It is more than stupid, it is lethal. People have died on drop rides due to restraint issues.

As a ride operator, we would press the e-stop button whenever a guest did something they weren’t supposed to. And at my ride it would always break down and have to be full restarted by mechanics every time it happened so that wait time usually gets guests to listen

Back when this ride was Tower of Terror, a cast member did an E-stop for our ride right after the picture was taken. They wouldn't tell us what was going on and when we finally reached the unloading zone, security and a manager was there and they told us to exit but stopped 2 men that were in the back row. When I went to see our picture, the 2 idiots were in the back row with their feet all the way up. So yea our fun ride got ruined by idiots and I was mad.

As a former disney CM that worked on a ride in WDW, we would just press the e-stop or end cycle stop (depending on the ride) and tell them to either leave or wear their seatbelt correctly. This is not okay :(

let me just say no one. I mean NO ONE who uses tiktok came across these dumb trends. My parents and I use it regularly and we never camecross those type of challenges haha. I even asked my friends and they didn't even know about it until I brought it up lol.

I had a friend do something similar when we were kids in the early 2000’s - she would intentionally lift her knees up so that the lap bar of this one ride would lock higher than it should have so she would “free fall” in her seat during the ride. Social media in general just makes it easier for people to suggest things like this to the masses.

Fun fact this instance didn't happen only once it happened twice. I remember there was a video of someone tricking the cast members that they fastened their seat belt back when it used to be the tower of terror. They did stop the ride noticing the guest not having the seat belt on. So the fact that now tik tok brought back this stupid idea again is just horrendous

Firstly the ride’s seat belt mechanism locks and CANNOT be removed while the ride is in motion. Additionally, the ride can’t dispatch unless all seatbelts are fastened. The seatbelt system on most Disney attractions utilize a tension belt that also can’t be adjusted once set. Soooooo I have to question the legitimacy of this report sorry 🤷🏼♂️
I think the trend was people would put a bag or something on their lap, and put the seatbelt over it, making it looser around them. I could be wrong though.
I also found that quite odd, but I was not sure about the specifics of this specific ride.
it’s a tension belt but people are sitting forward when restraints are being checked and then holding the belt up to keep it loose during the ride cycle
Question the legitimacy of a report, but do no actual research into the details that you’re unsure of?
The seatbelts were never removed, they were improperly fastened from the start. And it’s easy to fool a seatbelt tensioner with a sweater or something in your lap that you pull out once the ride starts to give you more room.
Obviously they got caught but there’s zero motive for anyone to make this story up.

So my dad did it on Tower of Terror when he was in high school in like the 80's. (He said it was scary and don’t do it) You fold the slack that is left ever yourself so when they check the seatbelts it looks like it is over you normally. But when they are done you let the rest of the seatbelt go and then on the ride.... you you already know

This was a thing back in 2010 when tower of terror was the ride. You’re suppose to scoop out extra seatbelt and sit on it some how. basically every inch of a Disney ride has night vision cameras watching your every move. I knew someone who vaped on a ride and got kicked out the park.

This is sort of unrelated, but the Guardians ride in Disneyland is different than the one in Disney World. For those who don't know, it's basically the Tower of Terror but differently themed.

Did a quick search about this and this is what I found: The "blackout challenge" has been around since at least 2008, according to People, but it started making the rounds on TikTok again back in 2021, and has continued to make headlines in 2023.

A long time ago when this happened, a viral video was uploaded to TH-cam where you can see the surveillance footage of a kid doing this stunt and then the entire ride comes to a complete stop and they call out the boy over the intercom.

I got in trouble for taking off my shirt for the picture (Tower of Terror) the doors open and the dude is already pointing at me and says SOOO smugly “your picture is ruined because THIS gentleman here removed his shirt 😤🤓” since my family/group took up the whole cart everyone boo’d the guy for being a dweeb about it as we walked off 😂 I miss that ride a lot
Aren't you guys lucky. At Tower of Terror at Tokyo DisneySea, they have an additional shoulder belt on this attraction.
As a roller coaster enthusiast, I love loosening the restraints JUST A LITTLE BIT to get a bit more airtime. Even so, I ALWAYS KEEP SAFETY FIRST by making sure the primary restraint is still snug against me with additional ones still properly secured. On rides such as tower of terror (or Disneyland's Guardians of the Galaxy), I would never loosen the one seatbelt keeping you in. These trends take thrill-seeking to questionable levels, undoubtedly.

I remember Disney Sea in Tokyo has a similar attraction and the friend I was with, she happened to have her bag on her lap and was holding onto it but at the drop, it ended up surprising her and where she thought she held onto her bag, turns out it was just out of touch and her bag kinda raised up a bit in the air
I was like scream laughed a little from the drops because it was fun but then I happened to catch the bag slowly raising up at the corner of my eyes and I laughed even more
The friend next to me after it finished, we just constantly laughed and she said it was her first time screaming on an amusement park ride as well ahahahah

Since this ride is a retractable SNS drop tower, it's ok to loosen the seat belt a little bit, in fact if you actually tighten your seat belt too tight you are at risk of whiplash. However you should obviously not loosen your seatbelt to the point of you getting a dangerous amount of airtime.
Park guests should follow the rules but this is not as dangerous as one would think. The Florida version of Tower Tower used to have a shared lap bar and provided some airtime. Provided that the seat belt is not loosened too much, I doubt anyone would get hurt. The danger is in going overboard.

A friend and I were having a kind of debate yrs ago, about the overabundance of laws. He thought there were too many, and I said it's because people do such stupid, life-threatening things! My example was texting while driving, and this was long before TikTok. Here again is another great example of stupid human tricks!
