I was the biggest transformers G1 fan. It was a unique cartoon in the fact that some transformers weren't in every episode. Like it was rare to see shockwave who was stationed on Cybertron, and Omega Supreme, and Jetfire/Skyfire who was buried in ice and was a decepticon but changed to a good guy. Also I remember an episode where the decepticon jets were getting drunk off energon cubes.

Miami Vice only at #10 was a shocker, i was very happy so see Transformers on the list. However i miss those soaps, Dallas, Dynasty, Falcon Crest. Those were 80s enough for ya! ;)

Miami Vice number 10? If any show defined the 80's, it was that one. Plus, Hill Street Blues, Thirtysomething, China Beach, and Dynasty don't make the list or even get an honorable mention?
Well, the way they described "decade defining" (0:52) didn't require any of these shows to be "mostly" in the 80s. I thought MWC's best seasons were the first 3-4 seasons (with Steve Rhoades as Marcy's husband), and those seasons were mostly in the 80s.
I can see that for Roseanne but for me, I'll never forget the Married with Children marathon in Nov 1989, where on a school night, I got so drunk drinking Yukon Jack and ended up busting open a tooth because I slipped on McDonalds entrance way. I then somehow signed a form with ambulance crew that I didn't need help and then passed out drunk in a ditch with freezing water. I woke up in the hospital with my dad escorting me out. Damn that was fun. All hail the 80s.
Come on, Dallas SHOULD'VE BEEN number 1... It was so popular, HUGE all across the world in the 80s.. AlsoThe Golden Girls deserved a spot in the Top 10.
soft hearts, electric souls and because it ranked up over 350 million viewers worldwide - do your research and watch your mouth. Next to no tv series is in the Guinness book of records alongside Dallas. Best that. Twat.
soft hearts, electric souls can I ask what you are basing your opinion on? Regardless of your bitterness, Dallas holds a rightful place in the GBoWR and is still much loved today even celebrating its 40th anniversary with a huge party attended by thousands at Southfork this year. Give us your ‘facts’ behind your statement. You sound like a bitter fan of something far less successful.
Miami Vice WAS the '80s. It should have been #1 and only Cheers comes close. Also, Married With Children, Roseanne, and Wonder Years don't belong on the '80s list. Great shows, but their real impact was on the '90s. If we're talking about decade-defining, shows that had a real impact on that decade and not just most watched, the shows that people remember when they think of the '80s, here's my list: 1. Miami Vice 2. Cheers 3. Cosby Show 4. Dallas 5. Dynasty 6. Family Ties 7. Magnum, P.I. 8. Dukes of Hazzard 9. A-Team 10. (tie) Knight Rider/MacGyver Honorable Mentions (in no particular order): Murder She Wrote, Golden Girls, Who's the Boss, Growing Pains, Facts of Life, Diff'rent Strokes, Moonlighting, Night Court, Hill St. Blues, Airwolf, Fall Guy, Simon & Simon, Hart to Hart, Cagney & Lacey, Perfect Strangers, Falcon Crest, St. Elsewhere, ALF, Hunter, Remington Steele, The Equalizer
Maybe if they had 100 Honorable Mentions, they could include that show. Of course, they shouldn't be trying to make just a single list of 10 shows that supposedly covers all the different genres (sitcom, drama, soap, kids' cartoons, late-night...)
Exactly. This is supposed to be a decade defining list, and they just ignore all the night time soaps that were so popular in the early half of the 80's. Fail
awwwwww this feels so sad..being a child from the eighties..wowww when i look back i can remember how beautiful these sitcoms were and how my dad enjoyed 'Cheers' and i loved 'Full House'
Dallas should have been on this list. It the highest rated show on television for most of the first half of the 80's. It totally defined the greed and over spending of the Ragan era.
The best years of MWC were the first few years (with the Steve Rhoades character), and those years were mostly '80s. I also think it was more "decade defining" with regard to the 80s than to the 90s, FWIW.
MacGyver is still the best 80's show and greatest show ever made in my opinion and i grew up with it :) . They sure don't make adventure/action shows entertaining like MacGyver anymore these days . He used his mind to solve problems instead of using a gun, because he hates guns.
"Cheers" is a tremendous show, and I was glad to see "Family Ties" on the list. Disappointed that "Knight Rider" and "Magnum, P.I." were just honorable mentions, though.
The 3 sitcoms you mentioned were pretty mediocre, IMHO. Maybe if you were still a kid when Facts of Life was on, it probably seemed like one of the better shows(?) Dramas like Cagney and Lacey should be ranked separately from sitcoms, I think.
Problem with those top10s, they are only about US... In France, Cheers is almost unknown (i'm not even sure it was aired here), American talk shows also aren't aired here. So those top10s Never correspond to our points of view. I would have put Married with children or Cosby Show way higher because they were far more popular here ! Also in France McGuyver would certainly be first... (people don't kniw Richard Dean Anderson, Everyone calls him McGuyver, that's how it is popular around here)
It's not about it being from US..It's about the most globally known forms of entertainment..When it comes to TV shows,US leads the way followed by Britain(in terms of global popularity)..Old school rock and roll is dominated by UK followed by US..Newer forms of music is a bit more divided..Hollywood is the most dominant force in terms of movies..So obviously, they look at global popularity as the main factor..And English is the global language of the world..Sometime non-english movies like Oldboy make the lists because of their popularity worldwide..This is coming from someone who lives in Saudi Arabia who knows most of these shows(including Cheers) but very few from non-English forms of entertainment(excluding Animes)
I was born in '77 and I remember all of these. I remember my mom obsessing over Magnum PI because she had a crush on Tom Selleck, lol. I loved The Wonder Years, and I think Cheers was the right pick for #1. The class of '93 at my high school used its theme song as their class song. Memories.
Married with Children and Roseann started in the 80s but are oh oh so 90s. And Golden Girls is one of the funniest shows ever and was mostly in the 80s so should have been on the list.
This compilation brought back memories, fond and memorable. Thanks to , "Late Night with David Letterman," must see TV at 1235am was what i looked forward to all day. What a misfit i was, but, there's a place for us in the world!!! Thanks a million to the host of "Late Night" and NBC for being a pioneer and giving him a second chance (daytime TV didn't work out for David Letterman).
This is a very good list, but here are a couple that deserved at least an honorable mention: Dallas: It started in the 70's, but really took off in 1980 with the "Who Shot JR" storyline. It was an incredibly glamorous mix of sex, politics and business--along with plenty of ruthless characters, and an interesting cliffhanger for just about every season (although not always an interesting resolution). It petered out by the end of the decade with the departures of just about every major character, but nonetheless its impact is hard to be denied. Moonlighting: This show was lightning in a bottle for the first two and a half seasons, but petered out near the end due to cast conflicts, mediocre storylines and a writer strike. However, in its prime, it was untouchable, and pretty much defined the term "dramady." Plus, it really took breaking the fourth wall to a hilarious level (even if that in and of itself became a major crutch in its last two seasons).
This has been the toughest decade yet to pick, likely due to how much greatTV there was. Still, I have to question some choices. Cheers above Cosby? I don't see it. And while the list properly included Miami Vice, they omitted others. For one, Dallas was a defining 1980s show, not a 1970s show; it was money, oil, power, greed and business; it was Reaganism made manifest. How could it not be here? And while I loved Golden Girls, it was not a decade defining show. Finally, Transformers did start then, but if you wanted to include a cartoon, they should have gone with G.I. Joe, another true Reagan-era show.
Married with Children and Roseanne were definitely more defining of the 90's than the 80's. Combine that with the most solid entries on the list just received Honorable mentions, no I don't agree much with this list - except #1 is well deserved.
10. Cheers 9. MacGyver 8. The Wonder Years 7. The Cosby Show 6. Who's The Boss? 5. Family Ties 4. Roseanne 3. Star Trek: The Next Generation (different) 2. Miami Vice 1. Magnum P.I. Buck Rogers in The 25th Century (different) Growing Pains (different) The Facts of Life (different) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (different) Married With Children The Incredible Hulk (different)
I cant believe you guys didn't select shows like Dynasty or Moonlighting. Both shows had such a huge cult following. And wasn't moonlighting the show that put Bruce Willis on the map?
Their favorites are not necessarily your favorites. Everyone wants what they call a good show in their opinion well, they were all good shows. Do your own page folks and put all your favorites but since this is his page it's his favorites, not yours
''Miami Vice'' should have definitely been higher, that show is pure 80s through and through. Also ''The Cosby Show'' should have been No. 1 instead of ''Cheers'', other than that good list.
In talking about "The A Team," the narrator says "We pity the fool who didn't see this show." That remark may have sounded cute, but it repeats a common misconception: the idea that the catchphrase "I pity the fool" was always uttered on the show by the character B.A. Baracus (played by Mr. T). Untrue! Mr. T only said this pharse one time, and it wasn't on "The A Team." It was when he played boxer Clubber Lang in the movie "Rocky 3" starring Sylvester Stallone. I believe it was Eddie Murphy who perpetuated the notion of the line being used on "The A Team" when he started parodying Mr. T on "Saturday Night Live," because, in imitating the actor, he would sometimes say things like "This is Mr. T! I pity the fool who don't watch "The A Team." It's like when "The Brady Bunch" is spoofed and someone imitates Jan Brady saying "It's always 'Marcia, Marcia, Marcia' " (referring to her supposedly more popular older sister), thus giving the impression that Jan made this statement all the time when, in fact, she only said it once, in the episode "In My Sister's Shadow."
Taxi not being mentioned in a top 10 list of any 80's tv show requires another list. If "Decade Defining" doesn't apply, "Greatest Ever Television" must. I hope that another criteria is applied to future ranking of television programs through history. The only reason that Taxi shouldn't be on this list is that it transcended its time. Kudos for including Late Nite with David Letterman
I was born a little after the 80s so I'm jealous. They sure had a lot better shows on TV back then than some of the stupid trash that's on now. Even in the 90s, the music, the movies, the TV shows, and the people were still real.

Inlove WithOceans this list is a pile of wank. Transformers??? Reallly????
+Wendy Richmond With only 10 spots, I can't believe they found room on the list for a kids' cartoon...
Married with Children is more 90's style and I would have added Dukes and Knight Rider in the list.
Patty and Selma would tend to agree with you
What about Dallas? Who Shot JR? How could they forget that?
They didn't-It's in the 70's Honorable mentions section
"Cheers" is a tremendous show, and I was glad to see "Family Ties" on the list. Disappointed that "Knight Rider" and "Magnum, P.I." were just honorable mentions, though.
No star trek the next generation? Not even an honorable mention? Come on watchmojo
I couldn't care less about sci-fi, but my wife would agree with you... ;)
WTF?????? Designing Women, Cagney and Lacey, Facts of Life, One Day at a Time
The 3 sitcoms you mentioned were pretty mediocre, IMHO. Maybe if you were still a kid when Facts of Life was on, it probably seemed like one of the better shows(?) Dramas like Cagney and Lacey should be ranked separately from sitcoms, I think.
@@not-so-smartaleck8987 On Day At A Time was primarily the 70s.
Married With Children belongs in the 90's list.
21 jump street is my favorite 80s show.
(people don't kniw Richard Dean Anderson, Everyone calls him McGuyver, that's how it is popular around here)
It is voted by fans so you can go vote! I said that in excitement btw
In the hood Cheers is almost unknown also.
I assume the majority of the channel, video, votes, and most other things are based off of American things rather than international.
FUCK France cry me a river
I was born in '77 and I remember all of these. I remember my mom obsessing over Magnum PI because she had a crush on Tom Selleck, lol. I loved The Wonder Years, and I think Cheers was the right pick for #1. The class of '93 at my high school used its theme song as their class song. Memories.
I think murder she wrote is the best 80s defining show.
Married with Children and Roseann started in the 80s but are oh oh so 90s. And Golden Girls is one of the funniest shows ever and was mostly in the 80s so should have been on the list.
Ahhh The Wonder Years, who can deny being in love with Winnie Cooper?
Miami Vice should have been higher on the list.
What about The Facts of Life. I loved that show !!!
You take the good; you take the bad...
Really just a kids' show. Hardly "decade defining", IMHO
The golden girls should've been on the list!
This is a very good list, but here are a couple that deserved at least an honorable mention:
Dallas: It started in the 70's, but really took off in 1980 with the "Who Shot JR" storyline.
Love moonlighting too
Yes, Moonlighting shouldn't have been left out.
Vice should have been higher and Magnum not in the top 10 ?!?! Wow !
I used to love the Cosby Show... Until I took an arrow to the knee. OH WAIT, I STILL LOVE THE COSBY SHOW
Me to😊
Married with children was the best, all of them were good and played there pert well.
I expect Ren and Stimpy to show up in the Top 10 Decade Defining Shows of the 1990s.
Married with Children and Roseanne were definitely more defining of the 90's than the 80's. Combine that with the most solid entries on the list just received Honorable mentions, no I don't agree much with this list - except #1 is well deserved.
I loved The Wonder Years sooo much
It ended horribly
Remember the words... Nothing can bore like The Wonder Years...
Not even 1 short clip of Moonlighting :(
10. Cheers
9. MacGyver
8. The Wonder Years
7. The Cosby Show
6. Who's The Boss?
5. Family Ties
4. Roseanne
3. Star Trek: The Next Generation (different)
2. Miami Vice
1. Magnum P.I.
Buck Rogers in The 25th Century (different)
Growing Pains (different)
The Facts of Life (different)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (different)
Married With Children
The Incredible Hulk (different)
I cant believe you guys didn't select shows like Dynasty or Moonlighting. Both shows had such a huge cult following. And wasn't moonlighting the show that put Bruce Willis on the map?
or dallas.
Darecky Dallas was in the 70s list
The little house on the payiree
What about "Moonlighting", "Remington Steele" and "V"?.
It started in 70s
I was born a little after the 80s so I'm jealous. They sure had a lot better shows on TV back then than some of the stupid trash that's on now. Even in the 90s, the music, the movies, the TV shows, and the people were still real.
i thought for sure Dynasty, LA Law and Dallas would be on the list
I really expected to see Night Court in this list... too bad :/ Really deserves a spot!
Honorable mention for MacGyver not nearly good enough... come on WatchMojo.. such fail.
It's top 10, its hard to fit everything. If it was top 20 all the honorable mentions would be listed.
Most of the items in the honourable mention were more defining when the stupid sitcoms that were mentioned in the list. Magnum PI and MacGyver were far more decade defining. MacGyver is my #1 TV show
The "stupid" sitcoms are way more "decade defining", IMHO.
The sole goal of Wonder Years was to make my mom cry at the end of each episode.
