  • 1 hour 28 mins. Las Vegas casino. 2 classic "tuxedo" quarter-final matches. First, Earl Strickland vs Dan Louie (Pacific Northwest champion for 10 years); then Buddy Hall in very exciting match vs Bobby Hunter. Great pro pool playing. Very controversial foul call begins moments past 1:03:00 mark in the video.

Buddy Hall looked like a monster when he was called on the foul when he did not hit the 5 ball.

Same with most of history's greatest chess players. But many of them indulged in a little smirk at the moment they and the spectators knew their opponent's will had been broken by an impossible-to-answer winning move. ~ Ray C.

    That 5 ball definitely moved.
If you watch *the top of the white circle* containing the number you can see it rock. It is barely visible at normal speed. If you watch at the broadcaster slow speed the resolution of the picture is so bad that it is hard to see the movement, but it is there.
On behalf of the ref, he could only see the back of the ball from where he was and the motion was in line with his line of sight. Impossible to see the movement if you can't reference the only spot where you can see movement, the white spot holding the number, which was on the opposite side of the ball from him. We humans are notorious for our inability to judge the speed of anything coming or going directly down our line of sight. All he could see was an orange spot. That being said, he should have moved his ass over to where he could properly see the shot. He had time to do that.
To see the ball move, go to 1:03:54 and pause.
    Click full screen.
Click settings (the gear in the bottom right corner of the screen) and change the speed of the vid to 1.5 or 2 then play it on full screen.
    The motion is obvious.
If you want to see it repeatedly, press the left arrow key and the vid will move back five seconds, enough for a repeat. If the arrow don't work, click anywhere below the red line at the bottom of the screen and try again.
TH-cam controls, man, sometimes they're weird. Also, you can move the vid back and forth 10 seconds by using the J and L keys. The K key will pause it like the space bar does.
Buddy was robbed but it was just one of those things. He was the only person in a position to see the ball move.

+deltavee2 An admirably thorough analysis and a nicely detailed step-by-step way to see for ourselves that you're correct. Whoever employs you is lucky to have you and your skillful technical-minded approach to resolving these kinds of issues. Sincere thanks for contributing this.

+deltavee2 I don't think he did, but you can't be 100% sure because what you are seeing looks more like an optical illusion because the camera is zooming out during the entirety of the close up. Does not look like the 5 ball rocks. Pause and un-pause the video every second of the close up, there is no movement. Look at the left edge of the 5, it looks like he just barely whiffed it. Again because of the quality it's impossible to be certain but I personally don't think the ball moved at all.

Hi DD. I looked as you suggested and also with Firefox zoomed to 300% at speed .25 taking into account the camera's zoom while pausing multiple times. Look at what the pull back of the camera and the tech of the day do to the diamond next to the ball. The diamond does show some slight change/deformity that could be translated over to the white on the ball.
You're right, the optics are terrible but at .25 and 300% it looks to me like the ball moves ever so slightly after the cue ball is just past the ball.
      I guess we'll never know.

Yes, the 5 ball did move. You can also see it move if you go to 1:05:02, cover up the cueball with your hand, and just watch the 5 when Buddy shoots. You will see it move, ever so slightly.
