There are so many tools out now you can buy just about anywhere actions discount stores pawn shops so having adapters m makes buying cheap tools more apt
I have a Dewalt battery fleet and wanted a unique Ryobi tool. I bought a Dewalt adapter that allows use of new style Dewalt batteries on old old style tools. I took the top part of the adapter off and replaced it with the equivalent part from a dead Ryobi battery I had from over 20 years ago. This created my Frankenstein adapter. It works great. It also made it possible for me to use the old Ryobi tools, although they run faster.
A few years ago I 3d printed a Milwaukee to Dewalt battery adapter and resurrected an old weedwhacker. Most of the performance in these tools come from the battery and that little B&D weedwhacker with a 9ah M18 battery is an absolute champion, and super light weight.
This is why I spent hours deciding on which cordless tool family to buy into.
In the end, I went with Ryobi. I'm a little old lady, I do use tools and build things but not often. I wanted tools that are light weight with small handles ... I know they won't last as long or be as powerful as the big boy tools, but that's fine by me. Ryobi makes so many tools on the same battery platform that I don't think I'll ever need a cordless tool outside the family.
I'd rather not mess with commodity battery adapters or other kludges.
Break over, time to drill more holes for my kitchen undercabinet lights. :-)
Dewalt has a 12v lineup that is lighter and smaller than their 20v versions.

Ryobi, Bosch, DeWalt, Milwaukee, Something Else?
TTI also offers a cordless glue gun under the Walmart/Hart brand and Harbor freight offers one I believe under the Bauer brand. Although out of those brands I would choose the Ryobi and in fact I have the dual temp full size and the mini glue gun by Ryobi. They both seem to work well so far although I think I use the mini the most. They are very handy for repairs, small mock ups, electronic projects and numerous other projects.

The continuous draining of the battery is a real thing, and not just a problem with knock off adapters from amazon. Dewalt themselves makes an adapter for their current sliding style 20V batteries to the old post insert style 18V battery tools. I have one for my recip saw which I've had for 15 years and no signs of it dying soon, but those batteries died years ago. Anyway, a couple times I have forgotten to disconnect the battery and came to realize the battery had been drained, yet it was near full when I was using it.

The third pin on most tools is just for the thermistor to sense the battery temperature
A 10k resistor and knowledge of which port to bridge will get most tools to activate. For example, black&decker's third pin is a 10K NTC. It's also why tools usually pretend to be 'overheated' when running on the wrong battery

Exactly, and the icing on the cake is that it's cheaper to get the glue gun + the adapter than it is to get the glue gun as a combo with a battery and charger

Great video as always! Ive been doing this for months now with my makita impact driver with bosch 18v batteries, i get the best of both worlds and no more chargers/batteries needed

@@khalidjy7110 they still work good, but you have to remember to remove the battery after each use and to change the battery once the pilot light indicates low battery. Apparently the adaptors might deactivate the low power protection built in the batteries but just as a precaution

I've been eyeing this exact hot glue gun and adapter, as well as ryobi's 23 guage pin-nailer.
Really enjoying the hot glue gun, I've been using it a lot in the shop for odd jobs. I haven't really looked at the pin nailer, but I could see where that would be useful!
I have a craftsman 19.5 volt drill. Do they make an adapter to use 20 volt Blacken Decker lithium batteries with it?

Very well so far! At least functionally. One of them had the plastic lens over the battery meter peel off. They definitely arent as high capacity as they say they are, BUT, for the price they arent bad either.

A battery already has a BMS or Battery management System. So The tool cannot run it down completely Or make it overheat unless the battery itself allows it( in this case , the BMS is faulty)
So with this said, the adaptor is just a extension of the terminals to the tool and d converter for the USB outlet.
I would use it with no fear on an expensive tool also.
From what I've read online that isn't always the case. Sometimes the BMS is located in the tool and not the battery. I could be wrong on that front, but I'm very reluctant to run any experiments on my batteries.
@@ZacBuilds . You may be right that some battery pack do not have a BMS. Those would be very bad quality and should not be used on power tools as these require a high current delivery. Those batteries would be depleted beyond recovery anyway by anything plugged directly into them include some power tools unless the the manufacturer went an extra mile to include BMS in the tool itself. That would not be the fault of the adaptor . In addition, they might overheat and become an hazard for you tool and yourself ( the user). I have some experience in building power packs and just wanted to make a contribution to this video with my comment. @@ZacBuilds .02 over discharge sense would be in the battery. Each cell is its own story. If there is any digital restriction it's added in response to these adapters to maintain the insane battery profit margins and force you into brand "loyalty". Does Canadian law allow them to arbitrarily void a warranty without proving your action caused the specific defect?

@@ZacBuilds Makita batteries are controlled by software , you can time and date lock Makita LXT 18v and pair XGT 40v batteries with tools.
Makita LXT Sync Lock Battery Adaptor, with that you can program LXT batteries only to work and charge when you want .
XGT 40v platform have similar device, that you put between battery and the tool , with that you can make your tools only operate with your batteries.
Its anti theft feature, what does anyone do with a tool that they cant use with replacement batteries and it only works 8h per day., not on weekends at all.
I did exactly the same thing with that glue gun. I used it for a long time until I got a great deal on a set of ryobi nailers that I just couldn't pass up, and I ended up with several ryobi batteries.
Nice! If there were other Ryobi tools I was interested in it wouldn't be as big of a deal and I probably would've just grabbed a few ryobi batteries, but as far as I can see it's only the glue gun I was interested in
Best investment I ever did my craftsman c3 drill would be ok with drill but with my c3 grinder it would stop with original batteries as a safety feature but was impossible for me to finish a cut it would cut off at like 5 seconds so with adapter to Milwaukee batteries is such a time saver 😅
I have few Triton batteries, may I know if there is any adapter exist which converts Triton battery to any other tool power?
I bought a Meliff hot glue gun on amazon for $39 cad and it works with my milwaukee battery packs. It works so well I have had no issues however I have never drained a battery pack on it in fear that it may put the battery voltage so low that my milwaukee charger may not recharge the pack.
Running adapter with Dewalt batteries specifically is actually safest option, as Dewalt done that themselves and released adapter to run their old 18V System with new 20V batteries
20v and 18v batteries are the same voltage their just rated different for marketing.
I got a Ryobi impact driver I run off Porter cable batteries do you a adapter and it shuts off when it is low on juice

hahaha thanks Jason! And ya it's a shame dewalt doesn't make a first party one, as I'd prefer to just get that, but hey sometimes you have to make do with what you can find.
For me the 20 volt battery adapter from 18 volt to 20 volt was worth it because it would of cost me a whole lot more to replace all the tools I already have from 18v to 20v. Which would leave me extra money to add on new 20v tools if I needed and still everything would work off of the same battery format.
I would definitely stick with the manufacturer original adapter rather than some second party one because like you mentioned there are safety features involved.
18v and 20v, as long as they are both lithium, are the same, 5s (5 cells in Series). In most countries, it's regulated, because 18v is closer to real operating power than 20v, and so 20v is deceptive advertising.
But if you're talking about an adapter for a lithium to an older "nicad" or "nimh" tool, or vice versa, be careful. Lithiums need lvc protection (low voltage cutoff) to protect battery damage. Ryobi puts that circuit in the lithium battery itself, everyone else puts it in the tool.
That apso means you shouldn't adapt non-ryobi batteries to a ryobi tool.
If you do use a lithium without LVC, you should immediately stop using the battery at first sign if power loss/voltage sag.
@@davidcheek8892the Dewalt adapter has it built in. I wouldn't trust an aftermarket brand or use aftermarket batteries either.
I have a bunch of Ryobi tools. I ended up getting a DeWalt *corded* sander because the Ryobi model isn't variable speed.
Really? I'm surprised the ryobi model isn't variable. Though as a type that I'm wondering if I've ever used any speed other than max on my sander haha
@@ZacBuilds in my opinion it depends on the sandpaper you are using...if you're using a high quality paper like 3M Cubitron II or the 3M Xtract Net sanding disc then you're going to want to adjust the speed depending on what you are sanding.

Yep, i bought a couple of Bauer tools as Makita is pricey for tools i will use a handful of times a year. Then an adapter to use my Makita batteries.
Wish i could find an adapter to use Makita batteries on Hercules so i could get their High torque impact.
Is there any adapters I can use on 24v ryobi edger to run on dewalt or Hercules battery 24v, i can’t find any more 24v battery ryobi must of discontinue them.

metabo also make 18v glue gun.... Bosch 18v home and garden tool too.
Coincidentally, the company that made that adapter, Mellif, now makes a DeWalt compatible glue gun, so you can skip getting a Ryobi + an adapter and just get that glue gun instead. I don't know if it is any good though.

Ryobi is the only tool brand that I know that makes battery-operated Bug light
It works like it should
I use a Makita 5 amp hour battery
It lasts about 12 hours
It will drain the Makita battery down to no bars left on the light indicator
Put it in the charger no problem it took the charge readily
I've been using the bug light now for two months with the same three Makita batteries that drains them all the way down and they always take the charge so I have no problem with the adapter.
Found a weed whacker in the garbage. Got an adapter, works great.
Almost all the batteries have the internal bms and temp stuff built in, even when using in that way it won’t be a issue, the tool itself have its protections for temp etc…
The reason that the batteries run down when left on the adapters is that the usb circuit draws a small amount of current even when not in use. You can get some adapters that have no usb port or as you said take it off the adapter when not in use.
I have a Waitley adapter and I connected my charge tester to it and the USB port does not draw any current, 0 Amps. Someone else said that the Dewalt official adapter also drains the battery and it does not have a USB port. So I don't think the USB port has anything to do with the battery drain.
@ChavezHobbies Waitly products for the most part are very good products (I own several of their bartteries), but some of these battery adapters by other companies are just made to low standards and ae just Chinese junk. I have an adapter to use my Milwaukee batteries to power my Ryobi tools and when not in use, it will deplete the Milwaukee batteries. So it just shows you have to be cautious about some of these cheap battery adapters and some of the other Chinese products that are dumped on the American markets.

I am a Ryobi guy sooo... I have adapters that let me use an adapter to use Ryobi batteries in old Dewalt tools that most people just throw away.
Now you can buy way more types of tools because Ryobi makes so many more than any other cordless tool company does. Although now that you’re purchasing them you should pronounce it right,ree-obi not rye-obi. And back in the day, Dewalt had a battery that looked a lot like the Ryobi battery of today. I don’t know if they would interchange.

Just so you know, Amazon sells a yellow and black cordless glue gun that uses the Dewalt 20v batteries. No adaptors needed.

As someone who generally buys the cheap tools, I really wish I'd spent a bit more and bought in to the Ryobi battery ecosystem, instead of the crappy blue line from Canadian Tire.
There are just _so_ many more tools that all use the same batteries (see: Aging Wheels), but that just wasn't a consideration I was making at the time, when all I wanted was "cordless drill, cordless impact, done."
Yes unfortunately the cordless drill and impact driver combo is the gateway drug that many companies use to hook people onto a battery platform. It's important to think about the full eco-system when youre deciding, because batteries are expensive. If you can get 3 or 4 batteries from 1 brand you can start just buying "bare tools" which will save you a lot of money.
Long term Ryobi is a poor decision
@@johnussss That makes literally no sense given that Ryobi is pretty much the only cordless tool maker to have retained near-complete backwards and forwards compatibility between Ni-Cad and Li-Ion: you can still use your old 18V Ryobi tools from the Ni-Cad era with new Li-Ion batteries while their new tools will still run on any working Ni-Cad batteries you happen to still have. So if someone had made a decision to go with Ryobi in the 2000s or early 2010s, their tools from then would still form a viable system today, whereas if you bought Dewalt or someone else, you now have near-orphaned tools (ya, Dewalt has an adaptor that costs nearly as much as a battery).
Canadian Tire's shenanigans with its battery tools has long been quite disappointing, tbh. They likely had enough seller clout that they could have forced a smaller tool maker like Black & Decker to just let CT reuse their battery mounts (what choice would B&D have when CT is likely where most B&D tools are sold in Canada?), but instead they went off and invented their own battery mount. And then they made a second tier of them for their Maximum line. Now, if that weren't enough, they came up with this 'Pwr Pod' system in which CT uses the same batteries (but another mount) for all of its various sub-brands, except of course Maximum.
On top of all this, no one seems to sell battery adaptors for Canadian Tire's various mounts.
@@davidjames4915 Who said anything about batteries, the tools I bought (which let me down) were rubbish, and every accessory I've purchased branded Ryobi has been sad, purchased a set of drill bits and 1/4" impact driver bits, all broke straight away, purchased a 1/2" to1/4" adapter to use my 1/2" Makita impact hammer as a impact driver, first driver bit I placed in it is still in it as it jammed and WILL NOT COME OUT! ... does not breed confidence in the brand!!! everything Makita I've purchased has given me joy and been worth the extra $

Honestly just search on Amazon or the internet in general, for Stanley to Makita adapter. That's how I found this one. If you don't get any results it's probably not possible

Theirs no way for the manufacturer to know an adapter damaged a battery or a tool unless the adapter melted to either. The only concern should be the health of devices used.
You said you didn't want another battery but still bought a cheap one. Can you charge that cheap one with a dewalt charger? If not then tou didn't gain anything buying the adapter

Ya I don't understand why anyone hasn't copied it yet, but it's a shame. I don't mind corded glue guns, but the freedom of cordless is really nice.

that damn adapter cost me 4 dewalt batteries how if you just leave the battery in in the adapter in the tool it will drain it to the point til you have to jump the battery with another 1 these things are not worth it at all i have them for all batteries all of them do it never leave the battery in these adapters

Actually the adapters have circuit boards similar to what your tool has to protect your battery so everything you explain about it not being safe is not true
Here's a simple truth about the Ryobi battery ecosystem. Although the Ryobi 18V batteries have 3 contact points (5 for the HP batteries), unless the tool you're using the adapter in also has more than just 2 contacts, there cannot be any communication between the tool and the battery because the two contacts are simply positive and negative. For those tools that have just 2 contacts (and despite having a bunch of Ryobi tools all of mine have just 2), there shouldn't be an issue using an adapter. Anyone that has taken these expensive batteries apart knows that the electronics that keep them from overheating or discharging too much is built into the battery. So if your Ryobi device has just 2 battery contacts, you should be good to go.
From the beginning, different tools shouldn’t be using different batteries types anyway. It is a greedy practice for the tool producers to force their customers to buy the “matching” battery and charger for that particular tool brand. How about Toyota cars only run on Toyota gas and ford car only on ford gas? Your video is actually encouraging them to make it impossible to even use an adapter between tool batteries or find ways to make it impossible. Why should each individual buy all different types of batteries and chargers for different tools? Isn’t that a big waste for all humanity and a big pollution to our universe?
They do all use the same power, cars use petrol, tools use electricity, so your argument doesn’t really add up. You can’t use Toyota parts on a Ford, because they are designed differently, to their own ideas of what’s best. You choose which you like and stick with that brand. I’m totally with the manufacturers making it impossible to use these adapters as they look janky as hell and not safe.

If you need an electricity based example, it's like saying that all telephone companies should go back to having their own individual charging ports instead of now all practically using USB-C (with Apple changing shortly). What actual benefit does exclusive batteries have over universal ones?
As a manufacturer you cannot guarantee any sort of performance or reliability if you don’t know what the battery is going to be. A lot of tools that use these batteries need very high discharge rates, putting in a crappy battery could damage the battery in a way that could make the battery unsafe or damage the tool. Add on top of that tools are often not treated gently, I’m sure the major brands do extensive testing to make sure your battery doesn’t explode when you drop your drill off a ladder. I’m equally sure Chinese knockoffs don’t do this.

You should know that Ryobi batteries have LVC and none in the tools themselves. Every other brand has LVC in the tool itself and none in the batteries.
Cut that USB out. It's a parasitic draw and kills your dewalt battery if you leave it in the adapter.

The adapter has next to nothing inside of it. If the USB port wasn't on there, it would be a hunk of plastic with two wires. The usb port adds a voltage regulator that just drops 18-20v to 5v, all power tool batteries are very simple.
All the voltage protection is inside the battery and all the tool is looking for is a power source. You can just connect any 20-18v power source into any 20-18v tool and it would have no idea. I can't figure out where you heard about a DRM check, the only DRM is the physical connector being used.
Ryobi's 18v is just them doing the math differently. If you take all 5 18650 battery cells at 3.7v and add them together, you get 18.5v. I don't know where the other companies get 20v but if you look in the battery it's 5 18650s wired in series.
Either way the voltage difference between 20v and 18v is so slight, that tool would already be expecting a voltage difference like that. A single 18650 cell at empty should be about 2.8v and at full it's supposed to be 4.2v. Voltage regulators are supposed to clean that up so the tool doesn't have to worry about the difference.
void the warranty are kidding man thats to funny its all the same voltages and battery type it fails sent it in with out telling them as made no difference .i do say he was fishing for something to say to funny.Just never leave it plugged in to tools that do not tune off with the adapter on as it will run battery as he says but drills and such should be fine and watch voltage on batter till you make sure it does not run its battery flat and kills the cells BMS in batter should turn it off but i do not know as his system is different i use another brand. pardon brad grammur

Milwaukee does not have the best tool in ever category....some are awesome, some I wouldn't even put in my shop.
