  • In the 3rd lesson of our Robotics from Scratch Training series, we discussed the subject of sensors, which are widely used in Robotics.
    In robotics, sensors are devices that allow a robot to interact with its environment and detect changes in its environment. Sensors collect information about the physical world around the robot and transmit this information to the robot's processor, allowing the robot to make decisions based on this data.
    Uses of Sensors in Robotics
    1. Navigation and Mapping:
    Lidar (Light Detection and Ranging): Lidar measures the distance and position of objects around a robot using laser beams. This helps the robot create a 3D map of its environment and avoid obstacles around it.
    Ultrasonic Sensors: Measures distance using sound waves. It is especially used to detect obstacles.
    2. Vision and Image Processing:
    Camera: Allows the robot to collect visual information. This data is usually processed with computer vision algorithms, so the robot can recognize objects, distinguish colors and navigate through the image.
    Depth Camera: Allows the robot to see in 3D, helping it detect the depth and distance of objects.
    3. Touch and Contact Detection:
    Touch Sensors (Tactile Sensors): Detects when a robot touches an object or comes into contact with a surface. It is often found on robot arms and gloves.
    Pressure Sensors: Sensing pressure on a surface, helping the robot control how much force it applies to objects.
    4. Movement and Balance:
    Accelerometer: Measures the acceleration and tilt of the robot. This helps the robot maintain balance and control its movement.
    Gyroscope: Detects the rotation movements and angular speed of the robot. This is especially important to ensure stability in flying robots (drones).
    5. Environmental Sensors:
    Temperature Sensors: Measures the temperature in the environment and is used in temperature-sensitive applications.
    Gas Sensors: Used to detect dangerous conditions by detecting certain gases in the environment.
    Importance of Sensors
    Sensors allow robots to learn about their environment, making it possible for them to become smarter and more independent. For example, an industrial robot may need to use visual sensors to accurately pick up an object on a production line. Similarly, a service robot needs distance sensors to avoid obstacles around it.
    In summary, sensors are critical components that enable robots to interact with their environment, detect environmental changes, and make decisions based on this information.
