those guys with the fat belly's still run 10 miles a day, and all those medals are for over seas campaigns and combat, plus some of those are also for valor, so don't disparage them, they are tougher than f---, they deserve a lot of respect. I served from 1983 to 1988
I note they have fixed bayonets Here in Halifax Nova Scotia when the Navy is given the Freedom of the city they may march with fixed bayonets. Is this something special for the FFL? think I know their tune Le Boudin now really like and their 88 steps per minute (from dessert fighting)
Traditionally soldiers were not allowed to grow beards/facial hair, however the sappers traditionally had the highest casualty rate so they are granted the very rare privilege of growing beards. The axes and aprons are worn to both signify that and because traditionally that was their kit; equipped to break down doors, wooden walls, obstacles, etc during combat.

It's sad to think that these brave men are going to one day risk their lives and perhaps die because of orders that they receive from the clowns you see in the presidential stand.
and you think other countries are different? atleast these soldiers are honest that they are there for to be used and expended and the thing is they know the risks instead of other soldiers in other countries fighting for "freedom" occupying another country its every governments wet dream to have people like this.
just to add to that the best thing about Legionnaires is that they arent discarded when they get old or unfit for duty, they atleast have a place to stay in France thats why no veteran Legionnaire ends up in the streets.
1) Le français : c'est une belle langue, ça vaudrait le coup de s'entrainer un peu. 2) Ils _sont_ "étrangers"... On commence par les dégager ? 3) Pauvre France... :(
anyway. Parades are special events to show people great energy and order of the armed forces. Here I see no energy. Probably Frenchmen lost their energy in the times of the First World War or even on the fields of Waterloo.
Legion Etranger is a child of Napoleon aera within French Army and may be it's a powerful part of the Armed Forces. But what was evidently victorious in the military actions of French Armt since Napoleon I? In fact - nothing. In the world war with Russia in 1850-s France took part together with a coalition of agressors. All allied achievements were concetrated in the small corner of small Crimea. Then... French-Prussian war was lost with ease. Some actions against touaregs and other aborigines? (led by Legion Etranger). Nothing cool. First World War? British corpse, Russian unprepared assault and German supreme commander disbelief to its own plans were key factors together with extreme moblization of reserve French army north to Paris. Then several years of useless positional front. But French soldiers were brave. Then... then completely nothing. Second World War brought France a total defeat and France was recovered with a help of Allied efforts, De Gaulle himself had a few chances to make anything. Vietnam? France had lost it. Algeria? Legion Etrangere? France had lost it. Modern actions of small brigades against various Africans? Coalition actions in Afghanistan or wherever? No, man. For today Golden Age of France has passed. And lazy marching style of French soldiers just show it. Yet I don't try to say something evil, I am not angry, nor I try to make you to be angry. It's just a constatation of the fact. Spain, Portugal, Sweden, Poland etc - Europe is a full of former great countries. Political success of peope like Marie LePen shows that some French still remember their imperial past and still have a wish to be a great nation. Well, why not. As for Russia today this country is right within an aeara of the last chance to survive. Like Byzantine Empire after Latin Crusaders invasion.
The French Foreign Legion was created by Louis Philippe, the King of the French, on 10 March 1831 from the foreign regiments of the Kingdom of France. Recruits included soldiers from the recently disbanded Swiss and German foreign regiments of the Bourbon monarchy
From a former U S Marine: much respect to our brothers in the French Foreign Legion.
Vice versa ,. All the best brother
Merci
Ihr seit die Härtesten
Respect those brave men, where other in other countries politicians talk, talk, talk, the Legion goes
They are also slaves of politicians and they do not act on their own!

Could you educate us as to why they're wearing aprons and carrying axes? Is it a military joke, or are they a form of engineer?
Those are sappeurs and they wear traditionally full beard and bear axes...

With such a slow march step they look like a group of big relaxed and lazy men. Even slow British step shows more energy.
Denis Alalykin their slow tempo March is misleading, the rest of the time their are thrashed within an inch of their lives .

In the fields of Waterloo....it is a joke! French legion is the best military group ..remember they saved te 8th Army in Bir-Hakeim!
