    "One of the signs of a great society is the diligence with which it passes culture from one generation to the next. When one generation no longer passes on the things that are dear to it -- it's heroes and their stories in its religious faith -- it's in effect saying that the past is null and void. It's of no value. That leaves young people feeling a lack of direction and a lack of purpose, and opens them to the dictum of Karl Marx -- that our people, deprived of their history, are easily persuaded." -- Winston Churchill

    I wish pro Wrestling was dying like people say the theatrical movie experience is on its death bed. Wrestling is childish, staged, never evolved into something interesting, and can't even depend on sex completely these days as a gimmick. I have no idea why Wrestlemania still sells tickets much less does well on On Demand. The only thing good about it is that we wouldn't have movies like The Wrestler without pro wrestling.

    Well said, Rob. You made me reflect on the impact on films made today verses back then; as a young film fan, it moved me. I think certain films that try to have an impact will have to be controversial. ‘Barbie’ was talked for a while after me and my sisters debated over its themes while ‘Megalopolis’ was bananas and I think of that film an example of original films from today. If people want original movies from great filmmakers, well, there’s always ‘Megalopolis’, but if they’re not into looking for original, independent, or international cinema while complaining about Hollywood movies these days, then they don’t like films I guess - I don’t know. By the way, I love ‘The Emigrants’ and ‘The New Land’ too.

    As someone who is a fan of Zack Snyder's DC movies, I get what Rob is saying. I think Snyder's intentions were good but he chose to tell a Superman story through a very dark lense. Hope was always the underlying theme throughout the movies but it wasn't without putting Cavill's Superman through the wringer and it wasn't always pretty to watch. Watching Batman beat the crap out of him in BvS was admittedly "mean spirited" but I think there was a point to it. It was to show how dark and cynical our world had become and what our world would do to someone as altruistic as Superman. We would literally tear him down, or try to.
    The problem, is people don't really want to watch that. They don't want brutal realism in their Superman movies. We don't mind seeing Superman go through trials and tribulations (like it seems like we will see in Gunn's movie) but it should be through a more hopeful and fun filter rather than the heavy metal filter Snyder used.
    But like Rob often says, I personally love the epic, heavy metal, operatic vibe of the Snyder trilogy but I totally get why most didn't. I'm ready for more fun and hopeful optimism, especially in this post covid world we live in.

    I really enjoyed this conversation overall. My honest opinion as a lover of film and as a fierce debater who sucks at debating, who always was on the side of movies are more than movies they are commenting on life and the human condition to people who always tell me "its just a movie" or "its just a tv show". Im also a believer in movie magic and just certain films have something extra about them thats cinema+ sort of speak.
    My honest opinion is that we are not in a place as a society to accept movie commentary anymore. We think we know it all, we think we have a grip on whats right and if the trump elections said anything about america its that it wants more of a traditionist commentary from all media. I think its reductive, and its motovated by fear of what we know needs to change in our society and our denial of the truth that has been self evident for decades. That the very movies we praise has been showing us. Right now we are in the age of people praising fight club and robert deniro's character in taxi driver. The luigi incident thats happening right now is confirmation of that fact. Its also confirmation of what movies like the joker and joker 2 touched on.
    We are coming to the revolutionary age and its possible that movies that me and rob and others idolize were probably agead of their time. As the human condition is more than ever being scrutinized and criticized. With discussions that fresh and fit and others facilitate like "you wouldnt be a single mom if you did x,y and z in the past" like we all live life in foresight and perfectly.
    I would argue that anora would not have done well with todays audience. The only fans model that is having sex with 100 guys, now 1000 guys and having a documentary about it and the audience reaction to it says it all.
    We havent progressed as a society at all when it comes to the topics that anora brings up. If anything, they would be behind the parents of the boy in anora if not criticizing the parents for allowing things to get this far. We just are not the same audience that are in awe and curious about life anymore like we were when the first star wars came out and shawshank etc.

    I agree, and we share a similar childhood with movies and interests, I was the kid with an 8-millimeter camera wanting to make the next great sci-fi movie. (It never happened). I loved sci-fi and fantasy but I also loved everything I could see. I remember the first time as a kid seeing On the Waterfront, and I was blown away. As a teen started to explore Asian films, I saw the Seven Samiria and then had to see everything by Akira Kurosawa. In college European films were added to the buffet. I have enjoyed so many movies over the years, and I have been thrilled to see so many things that I never thought I would see, Marvel shared universe that culminated in Infinite War and End Game was an amazing experience. However, it gets harder and harder to have a new or amazing experience when watching a movie. I end up being more and more critical because everything feels like a remake, revision or repeat of what has already come. The need for fan-service and easter eggs drives me crazy. Aliens Romulus basically takes all the previous movies and cuts parts from them and resembles them into one movie. It actually repeats lines from previous movie. The dependence on nostalgia makes everything like a 2 hour Deja Vu.

    I saw the Tarantino clip last week and I was really hoping you would see and at least discuss this Rob, and I’m so elated that you have. I like how Tarantino made the contrast with a season of a Taylor Sheridan show, where their plots is usually muddle with mellow drama ending with seasons that can be looked at as, well a dose of empty calories until the next season’s fix (I found this very true and I like some of Sheridan’s shows). Unlike season 1 of Homeland (which I still think about till this day) could be looked as a complete story with a ending that really stick with you and leave you with something resonating.

    Exactly, for all this posturing about how Snyder was screwed and WB interfered with his vision, at the end of the day he got to make 3 movies, when it comes to big-budget blockbusters, most directors get one f*ck up then they're out the door, Snyder got 3 chances and failed each time. And even after that got to make 2 Star Wars knock-offs that failed even harder. Let's move onto some of the other great talent out there, James Gunn's Superman and the people making the other movies, not to mention all the great up and coming talent that might be the next Gunn, or even Nolan or Villeneuve

  • @Dr.Beetlejuice110
    @Dr.Beetlejuice110 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

    1:16:34 but the problem with that is that we are not raising up anymore Tom Hanks like actors. All of these new actors coming up, LGBT+ and hetero etc. are not being adequately tried and tested to where they can take over a tom Hanks role and the LGBT+ can have their representation. There are too many LGBT+ actors in Hollywood to not satisfy the request that someone of their community represent them on film in order to give kids and other people some hope that they too can be on big screens and know that they matter and are seen. We don't need Tom Hanks playing the millions of roles out there, we need multiple Tom Hanks of all walks of life to have the chance to be Tom Hanks. That's the point. Of course we know he's an actor and he can do it all. He has done it all, bossom buddies was great. But let's look for more up coming actors and actresses and give them a chance to be Tom Hanks as well.

    I think the reason disney had the billion dollar movies this year as opposed to last year is that people loved the originals and saw no Hollywood "message" in the films. In other words, at least half the audience felt they could go in and see the film without being told they are the worst people on earth. Had Inside Out 2 had "the message" in it , Moana 2 would have definitely failed at the theater, and possibly Deadpool & Wolverine as well. There are movies that you expect to have a message front and center in. Inside Out and it's sequel you expect a story related to the perspective of a young girl, but you don't expect to have it promote "all men suck," or, had they done what was a rumored plan, "all straight people are homophobes." With the success of the sequels this year, and adding the results of the election in America and many around the world, people are saying give me good stories without these nonsense agendas. It seems from what I'm hearing Hollywood is hearing them. We'll see in 2025. I just hope most people realize that movies take time to make so the early 2025 movies may have already been made before Hollywood got the message from us, the audience.

    • @Madbandit77
      @Madbandit77 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      There's nothing wrong with having a message in a movie. It's just that it shouldn't be the most important thing in a film. Also, Disney basically remakes their animated fare that I couldn't care about.

    100% agree. Nobody minds adding some stuff related to current social issues if it’s a good story. You definitely can’t get away with it if it’s not a good story tho because it feels preachy. There is a scene in Avengers Endgame where a man is talking to Captain America about dating another man after the Thanos snap and I don’t think the audience really felt that it was preachy at all. It was just naturally & casually embedded into the story because some people have same sex relationships in real life and it’s not unusual.
    In contrast, Nick Fury randomly yelling “Black girl magic!” in The Marvels as that one lady took off flying, seemed very forced and it really took me out of the vibe of the movie mentally.
    Another example of it being used well was in the Captain America and Winter Soldier series where Sam was having to come to terms with being a Black man who is supposed to represent America. To me this didn’t feel forced at all because that is a natural thing that would actually happen in similar situation in real life. Plus the rest of the story was good.

I still don't get why people, even young people wanna play something instead of watching a good story play out! I can understand if the competitive spirit, maybe even learning how to develop a sense of strategy or even good reflexes can be developed from playing video games. But in reality most gamers are dopes and in my estimation have little motivation or inspiration for creativity. Not as much as potential filmmakers. I'm sorry if gamers have a problem with that!

      Because you get to be apart of the story. But I don't think video games have anything to do with it. Video games are telling good stories these days, the kingdom hearts games, the God of war games, the final fantasy games. All good stories where you get to be apart of as opposed to just watching it.

    Sorry Rob but your argument that sequels can’t leave a big impact on the viewer because they know what they’re getting is total nonsense. Wrath of Khan, Dark Knight, Return of the King, Empire Strikes Back, Winter Soldier, Infinity War/Endgame, Bourme Ultimatum, Evil Dead 2 etc etc the list could go on. Based on your logic, you’re saying that audiences knew what to expect when going into these films?
    Countless examples of sequels that are superior and also offer different and better experiences to the originals. The issue is simply the quality of sequels we are getting currently rather than the fact that they are sequels.

    At the 21:22 mark; AMADEUS is THEE GREATEST film(not movie) in cinematic HISTORY!- James D. Watkins, artistic director of PHOENIX PRODUCTIONS. (Quote/Dialogue from this MASTERPIECE: Priest: "All men are created equal in GOD'S eyes"......Salieri: "Are they?")

      It's a great movie but you don't watch many movies if you think that's the greatest movie in history. Now, if you rephrased that's the move you love the most... there's a difference, you know? One is objective, the other is subjective. You can do whatever you want with the subjective, but not the other way around.

      @alexandresobreiramartins9461 First Ms. Alexandre, AMADEUS is a FILM! Not a movie. BIG difference. Second - AMADEUS touches and reaches on different levels; Being holy and asking God to be a better artist, person, successful, etc. only to see firsthand the Mediocre of our society appear to be 'blessed' with what YOU prayed for just like ANTONIO SALIERI prayed. Another point of levels; Stop looking and worrying about other people's endeavors and YOU should focus on your own advancements and talents and gifts - just like ANTONIO SALIERI did. Another point of levels; Like the immortal dialogue in the beginning of this FILM - Priest; "All men are equal in God's eyes", SALIERI: "Are they?" - That little bit of dialogue is not only EXTREMELY PROFOUND but it speaks VOLUMES about the possibility of how a supernatural Being could make and see the human race because MOZART was/is Head & Shoulders above most prodigies and why is that, Ms. Alexandre? Another point of levels; Is it possible that a powerful artistic and creative prodigy burnout at certain ages occurs? Another point of levels; - A.I. (Artistic Immortality) - That's what the FILM AMADEUS represents to all of our artists. Now, please go back and watch the movie TRANSFORMERS or The Fast & The Furious. - James D Watkins artistic director of PHOENIX PRODUCTIONS.
