There is definitely a procedure to starting these and once you learn it, they are so easy to start. Mine is the same as this one and starts 2nd kick every time. Love these bikes.
Took apart and and found the ratchet wheel on the end of Kick start shaft was not retracting properly. I polished the ruff edge and now it works properly! Also, I believe the internal kick start cam that is suppose to release the decompression lever was bound against it. Hint: make sure clutch works properly BEFORE you reassemble case cover.
i struggling with how hard mine is to start it seems like compression and lack of fuel delivery have you found any good alternative carbs? considering changing the timing chain i bought in so i can make sure the timing is correct.
If you look at my video's, I have 3 xt550's. One I bought new. This bike was in pieces and I tracked down the original owner who said it was hard starting since new. This gets stuck on the compression stroke and it is impossible to kick through. I found the easiest way is to rock it in gear to get valves to open. I over adjusted tohe valves and it kicked easier but it ticked. The decompression works etc. Not sure what problem is but my original bike is way easier. I am going to tear apart one more time but the bike is also for sale so I am not too interested in putting any more time into it.
I think carb could also use a good cleaning. Bike was stored with gas for 10+ years. Carb was seized. I ran fresh gas with a bottle of sea foam and pull started with truck and it smoothed out in about one mile. Let me know what you recommend.

You are going to have a lot of fun on that 👍

The easiest bike big bore to kickstart. Won bets out of bars that I could fire it up with my hand.

There is a sweet spot on the kickstarter it will click then push tell it stops then return to the top and kick lightly

I am curious if you bought a new piston as i am having a hard time finding one
Sounds like you need a pilot adjustment on the carb, back fires every time you give it throttle
