That mall is in Mesquite, Texas, a suburb of Dallas. The property that Town East Mall sits on was previously owned by the parents of Benjamin Franklin (yes, his real name), a boy I went to school with in Mesquite. They had a big fine Southern type mansion, with servants and a cook. They raised cattle and horses and I spent a lot of time there while they were branding and tending stock. I remember some of the men folk went out to the pasture in a Jeep and came back with a pair of rabbits. I was fascinated as the black lady who was the cook, gutted and skinned the rabbits to get them ready to cook. Benjamin had an older sister who I had a crush on. She was beautiful and played a huge harp in the sitting room! The heavenly music from that harp filled the house! I don't think she even knew I existed! LOL! I lost contact with Benjamin when my family moved about 50 miles away. I could no longer just ride my bike over and visit anymore. Several years passed and I was riding with my dad when we passed by their old house. Bulldozers were tearing it down and that's when I found out that someone was going to build a mall there. Every place has a bit of history and if you don't tell it to someone, then it gets lost in time. History is a fascinating thing and something to learn from! So, don't lose it, don't change it and DON'T TEAR IT DOWN!
That is a wonderful story. I managed a store in Town East Mall back in 2003. Time goes by way too fast. The next thing you know everything around you has changed and most of the people you knew and loved are sadly gone. Keep the memories alive.
Did they used to have glass elevators that landed in a fountain in the early 90's? I mean, the elevator would actually come down into a small pool of water within a fountain, so that you could see the water on the outside of the glass as it came down. I used to go to a mall in Texas when I was a little kid, that had that, but I can't remember if it was this one or not.
So I barely remember when the 3rd floor food court was new, so this version of the mall I don't remember well. Did the food court used to be down a level that was covered up? Also does anyone know exactly why Town East has such an interesting look?
@@rockymom624 ohhhh that explains why the Frulatti smoothie Cafe is on the bottom level. I was born in 1991 and I remember when they used to have the gray carpet prior to changing to the tiles.
In 1984 it was just the bottom level in the center. I remember an ice cream place. And each corner area in front of the department stores had a sitting area with stone animal statues that kids could play on. The actors who played Maria and Gordon from Sesame Street did a meet and greet there. My mom caught a quick picture of Gordon as he was leaving. My family moved and when we came back in '89 the statues were gone and the center area now had 3 levels with shops all around, food court at the top. Sad knowing so many stores are gone. Dick's store in place of the old El Chico entrance is an eyesore. The Toys R US down the street is an Ollie's bargain outlet, Lubys is gone. 🙁
have not been to the mall in the US in nearly nine years , that is tragic yes . I remember the days of my countless visits to the US from the UK when malls were hot in the seventies though was delivered from Macy's in New York to Jamaica in the mid seventies still remembered them then well and going on the rides they had there , they were still hot in the eighties including being in Hollywood Mall in Florida shortly after little Adam Walsh was horridly kidnapped , and they were still hot in the nineties , and early 2000s , would like to see what they are like now even post Covid lockdown. Very sad there are many across the US look like haunted mansions , I have not been back home to the UK in nearly thirteen and half years , I hope that the mall culture is still very much alive including post covid lockdown . I will see one day soon .
Look at how thin and even athletic some of the people in this video were. Now there's fat people with piercings, purple hair, and tattoos everywhere. And that's just the women.

I love learning about the history of buildings before they were built and I never knew about this , thank you for this!!!

Back in the day. Today it looks like New Year's Eve at the nut house.
48 years later we have glitter bomb package 2.0
Town East looked a lot better before they filled in the center.
Town East mall cool! I go there a few times a year. It's not the same but hasn't changed since the 90s I think. But it looks way different now.
Shannonm75 let’s go shopping lol
Nothing is the same anymore 😪

i been going to this mall since 1982
they changed the inside look in 1986.
Seemed more civilized then. I wonder what changed 🤔
It looked so nice back then.
Wow something really differant about the mall just can't seem to put my finger on it.
You mean you don't want to say that blacks got here now?
Racism is a disease seek help immediately 🤮

The food court used to be the center of the lowest level. It all changed in the late 80s.

Try going there in 2022 it’s totally ghetto
😂😂
The mall has all kinds of cameras now
I think someone should do an update "bag theft investigation" video in this same mall in 2023.
Would be really different today

Holy shit

Isn't this entrapment?
Is that what you see here?
@Boofer T. Washington do you believe that the guy who puts glitter bom packages on his own door step to catch package thieves is also entrapment?
@@mrzabie0138 I was just being flip. It's only entrapment if Law enforcement does it.
thanks

People were much more attractive back then.
K and your point is?

Good video. I hope the little b_______ saw himself on tv STEALING that bag. :-O
Wasn't his fault maybe
It’s not as cool as Big Town Mall

People dressed better back then. Now if you if go to Town East Mall the women dress to tease your eyes with very little of their bodies uncovered.
Cope
I like my eyes teased
All Caucasians and few people were obese in 1972

Very boring with no Originality or Uniqueness
Always making everything about race🙄
