Making Furniture out of BROKEN GLASS

  • I am making furniture out of broken glass and epoxy resin. Recycling glass into furniture is something I am interested in for 2 reasons. 1. It can serve as an aggregate to reduce the amount of epoxy needed to make translucent pieces. 2. I sometimes break glass for some of my concrete molds and this gives me a way to recycle that waste. A bonus is that the glass acts as sort of a heat sink and I can pour the epoxy resin deeper without fear of it overheating. This table looks like it was made out of translucent concrete and weighs about 45 lbs. I saved all the broken glass I created from other mold making projects and used it as a glass aggregate for casting this piece of epoxy furniture. I made a positive prototype out of MDF that I used to make a negative silicone mold. I used total boat deep set fathom epoxy resin and it came out great.

    Next time you have leftover silicone, pour it into a bowl or a watertight box. Next time you make a mold, slice and dice the leftover silicone and use it as filler, allowing you to use less silicone. Also a use for spilled or leaked silicone, and a use for old molds.

    Projects like this also look great using broken safety glass, like what you get from a car window, and it's a lot safer to work with because it doesn't break with
    as sharp edges.

    For removing labels off glass bottles, OxiClean works really well. Mix with water and soak the bottles in it for a day or so and the labels slide right off. Used to do that for recycling beer bottles when I used to do homebrew, worked like a charm.

      Glass can be nearly infinitely recyclable, by mixing it with epoxy you just made a composite which probably will end up in a landfill at the end of its life instead of continuing its life cycle

    So, I saw a crackle glass dining table at the furniture store. I LOVED it. Went on line, to discover that a sheet of crackle glass 3 feet by 5 feet is $2500. I thought of using broken glass with epoxy to create a similar effect. Which when I googled it, led me to your video. If I picked up a glass table top in that size off of a local buy and sell group - second hand, and then like you suggested, mixed the smashed glass in with the epoxy, could this work? Then do a final top coat of epoxy to make it smooth topped after? I'd love to see you take on this kind of task?

      Came down to say the same thing. Zigzag cuts down the sides to get the halves to register with each other and don't cut through the bottom next time. The mold will take up more space when you store it, but it will be less prone to leaks.

      yes! we are talking to some glass fabricators that can basically get us unlimited amounts but first we need to establish the limits of the epoxy to glass ratio. epoxy is expensive but if we can get it to hold together with 80% glass to 20% uv resisting resin we are on to something

    I have to say I usually am a fan of your content but I can’t agree with this one. Glass can be recycled over and over, check out Jerry Rig Everything channel and he visits a glass recycler if you’re not convinced. Epoxy resin has only one destiny and that’s landfill. That’s bad enough, but here you’re throwing a load of glass too. Yes, I get it, it amounts to about a bucketful and you’re but one person but it’s the principle. And I know that nothing comes for nothing, recycling glass uses resources too but far far less than creating new glass. I just can’t get on board this one. It looks nice though.

    • @HomeMadeModern
      @HomeMadeModern  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't disagree with some of this and I appreciate the fair tone of your comment. typically re use is the best, high percentage recycling with out transportation or energy use is good, low percentage recycling is better than nothing. For me though the epoxy is tricky part and I try not to use epoxy for anything that wont be used for at least 40 years which is where it starts to be equal in impact to particle board. I am imperfect and at times inconsistent with the materials that I use but my main metric is to recycle more than I produce which is one of the reasons why I am recycling over 5000 lbs of windmill blades. its hard to be perfect so I just try to do more good than harm. epoxy projects are popular on TH-cam and I wanted to show a way to use less epoxy and more of another material. That being said I am aware that it is possible that this does the opposite and encourages more epoxy use instead of smarter epoxy use.
