Honestly, I loved when you mentioned how a lot of people chase after “the dream”, with 2.5 kids and a house, without ever stopping to think if that’s what they actually want. It always frustrates me when I see people just follow this preplanned path because they think that that’s what’s normal, so that means it’s right. The world is full of so many unique experiences and hidden places to travel to (not right now of course, but, you know, technicalities) and it’s just so sad to me that many people don’t even try anything beyond what is expected of them. They just see this mold for how they should organize their lives because society tells them that’s the only way to be happy. People are so scared to step out and try something new because society tells them they’ll fail. They miss out on the exciting insanity of having an amazing life. It’s frustrating. Most people aren’t capable of living amazing lives. Most people don’t know how to get the life they want, let alone what that life is. We are all not capable of everything. It’s a depressing thought, but it’s the truth. Rich and famous people who drift around in their early 20s and then find success later are the exception not the rule. Too many people use Alan Watts and philosophy like this to justify why they’re not going to college and why their coke habit grows bigger by the day. Most people don’t have the talent or energy to pull it off. Youthful confidence fades, leaving you a bloated, lazy 30 year old with a sudden realization that money and societal change pressures do very much matter. The 2.5 Kids, suburbia life plan is one that works. It leaves you with a pretty decent outcome for your life. You’re kinda happy, you get kids, you have some savings. It’s not perfect, but for most people, it’s the best they are capable of doing.
Alan Watts influenced me highly in life, and made me pursuit true happiness. Maybe even helped me with depression. Its amazing that you took some his quotes and lessons worth sharing, in a very relaxing way :)
