Not an author but from the old school Regretsy days and as an artist- if you put art out there at all, expect some criticism. If you're putting art out there for free, I'd expect reviews to be kind (fanfic for example tends to have gentle commenters). When money is exchanged, the buyer expects a professional skill level; expect harsher criticism. It sucks. I remember all negative feedback in vivid detail. But you either need to learn to ignore it or only show your art to family and friends.

I agree writing or creating art and publishing/releasing the work are two separate things. It seems kind of rude to complain about something free, but I guess I'd probably do a critique of a free story if it was popular enough and had something interesting I wanted to talk about.

@@jessicadoneganreads yeah I should have said kinder/less harsh, in general. People will still come at you sometimes, even for free content. It also depends on the space- what I've seen on AO3 and DeviantArt or whatever in general is way more positive than Twitter for example. And there's nothing wrong with honestly reviewing/discussing free content either. If you put it out there at all, people will have opinions about it. But if money is involved the expectations will be higher.

My reviews are definitely not intended for authors. If anything that should be a separate box to fill in. Though honestly it would be this 99% of the times: "hi, I think your overall idea and story is great, but your editor and betas should help you shorten this, tighten up the story, and avoid repetitive language".
I usually don't rate a book if I didn't like it but realise I am not the audience for it 😊

Yeah, I think that's something authors don't always consider, most reviewers attempt to be kind and thoughtful and generally we pick the thing up because we thought it would be good.
When I review stuff that wasn't for me but otherwise doesn't have issues I tend to drop it in a 3 or 4 star place, the 3 if it wasn't for me but probably coulda been with a few tweaks and 4 if it wasn't for me and never intended to be but I seen no issues with it's appeal for the target audience.

Bad reviews are fun to write AND read 😅. But it has to be creative and constructive, even if what you are reading wasn’t.

Yeah I prefer when the review is about the thing and not just randomly insulting. I'll take critical even if it's not constructive as long as we're talking about characters or story construction or themes too. I think my favorite reviews whether positive or negative pick the thing apart.

I personally never one or two star a book, just 3 star with a aimple message: "Not for me, but I liked the plot!" Or something of the like.
Writing is hard and just because I don't like it, doesn't mean someone else won't.
    Just my humble opinion!

To each their own. I agree writing is hard, and most books have an audience. I guess I just figure people will read or watch the review and find out as easily from a rant as they would a glowing review if it's for them or not.

It’s nice to hear such well-considered, measured responses to a topic that tends to trigger people right in their limbic systems. Thanks for encouraging us all to respect healthy boundaries in review culture!
