Camping in the snow in our Vanagon. It didn't go as planned!

  • Well this didn't go as we expected! We set off to Mt. Hood NF looking for a peaceful forest camp in the snow but a broken part changed our destination. We cobble it back together and set off for a place to sleep and cook an amazing meal over the fire.

    Hi guys, great video as always, and good to see you make the most out of a bad situation. I look forward to your next video and the adventures you get up to next. My wife and I own a 1988 T25 (Vanagon) caravelle and are currently restoring a 1993 VW LT karmann distance wide for our family of 5 as its a struggle to fit us all in the T25.
    All the best from the UK 🇬🇧

      An LT would be an awesome van for long distance on road travel. They are pretty rare here in the states and when they do come up for sale, they can get pretty spendy. Good luck with the build and thanks for watching!

      @ThatBaldwinLife Cheers Nate, I only got the distance wide just before Christmas but were making good progress on it. The full build to date is on my TH-cam channel, hoping to have it finished by May as we have a short holiday booked away in it 😀
      Cheers again, Simon.

    Nicely filmed and edited! And just enough drone footage. The thermal blankets are an excellent idea to augment the regular window coverings that come with the Vanagons, which are generally useless in cold climates. Heat loss is remarkable in Vanagons. Have you ever thought about doing anything concerning insulation UNDER the floor areas? Glass is a very poor insulator as well.

    • @ThatBaldwinLife
      @ThatBaldwinLife  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! The thermal window covers make a huge difference in heat loss. All of the walls are insulated with 3M Thinsulate as we. We don’t have the floor insulated as I haven’t found a great way ti do that yet. Any thoughts?

    So glad I came across your site! I have a white Westy. Still have the "window sticker" from 1990. I do what you do! Lot of Westy trips.

    What a great trip. Those window covers should have come with the rare earth magnets, such a game changer. I am going to add them to the rear window shade in my van right now. Cheers!

      How cold was it? How much condensation did you get on the inside around the edges? We found that putting the insulation on the outside and letting the glass stay warm eliminates all the condensation issues. Now that you have magnets try sticking them on the outside.

    • @ThatBaldwinLife
      @ThatBaldwinLife  ปีที่แล้ว

      It got down to around 34 degrees so it wasn't that cold. Putting them on the outside is interesting but it tends to rain or snow here when it is cold and I would hate to put the covers away wet. We get some condensation but nothing a shammy can't take care of.

      I just purchased the same insulated window covers and plan on inserting the 2” long rare earth magnets, instead of using the suction cups. Question - what were the “rubber plugs” that you inserted into the holes that were intended for the suction cups (not used). I would greatly appreciate any details on exactly what you used. Many thanks. I love your vids. B

      I just listened closer a couple of times. You used the rubber plug connectors that came with the suction cups - correct?

    they have "No Welder" Aluminum Welding Rods that can be useful in many repairs, Sutch as those chains or fixing a crack in something else just to get you home.

    Another fun adventure! Nice work on the window blankets! Curious as to the slider blanket, did it stay in place when opening and closing the door?

    • @ThatBaldwinLife
      @ThatBaldwinLife  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep in fact it stays better than the suction cups cause the edges don’t flare out

      Nate, do you recall how many magnets you ordered and how many on each window blanket. Got 25 of them showing up tomorrow and want to get the few I leave in place all the time done. Thank you...Tim

    • @ThatBaldwinLife
      @ThatBaldwinLife  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe we used around 6 magnets per window cover. That seems to be the minimum. We may even add a few more small ones on some for better sealing.

      @@ThatBaldwinLife Received my magnets a week late and ordered another 25 between shipments and got them all installed. Ordered another 25, making 75 total. Going to add more to the blankets where they actuall touch the metal for better grip. I slao bought silver duct tape and cut out small squares to cover the grommet hole, hardly noticeable now. Tanks again!!

      We’d have to go with 10’ tall doors for the high top! 😂
