Shoutout from CANADA!🇨🇦 Thank you both for this opportunity to explore this subject matter from scholars in the field, as well as those of us who have interest and ethnic origins spanning throughout Scandinavia, as there are millions living within our country! As Ben pointed out, many are surprised to hear of our university programs exploring and offering Human Evolutionary Studies Programs (HESP) to both domestic and international students. I too am fortunate to have wandered down a similar path and studied Anthropology/Archaeology at British Columbia universities, as well as the University of Alberta. Great universities in both provinces, as they offer a similar structure to European universities, making the transition for us to transfer from Canadian universities to those within Europe and the international community, and vice versa. I truly appreciate your intellectual probing and questioning of topics pertaining to this extremely fascinating subject! Cheers!🇨🇦❤🇸🇪
Hi there! My sister and niece were there over Christmas…they enjoyed their time visiting your beautiful country! I was blessed to see the videos and pictures they took while there. They also mentioned that the people were extremely friendly and open to them! Cheers!🇨🇦😊🇩🇴
Enjoyed this episode very much. Ben is a great guest. He was on our podcast last year speaking to many of the same issues about warriorhood, etc., and it was endlessly fascinating. He is a diligent and responsible scholar who is careful about making claims without the evidence. So many people have in their heads a version of the Vikings and their Age that is simply a reflection of what they want them to be, not what they actually were. Ben is always careful to point out how much we DON'T know, which is equally as important as acknowledging what we DO know.
I loved this interview (and the whole series actually)! So many interesting questions you raised there. I was also happy to see Ben in your podcast after seeing him on History TV 😃 Looking forward to seeing Amon Amarth again in Romania!
Great podcast! I really love your channel. ❤ Ben is extremely dedicated person who puts his heart and soul into what he likes to accomplish! I do believe that he is going to be super successful academically on an international level with a global recognition! I used to travel Scandinavian countries to learn their cultures, languages and life styles…lots of good friends, amazing conversations, heart warming ambiances of the places I have been to and crazy fun times ❤️ I was obsessed with the history of Vikings that sounded almost insane and absurd to people back then. They never wanted to talk about it, or acted like talking about Vikings something shameful, or barbaric. I was quite a bit shocked and disappointed to see how regular people over there didn’t really want to embrace the true value of Viking culture and their historical valuable contributions. I’m talking about the years between 2003 to 2009, not that far past. People had no clues about Vikings, because not that popular subject, no global fame volume at that time. And now, it is really funny; due to amount of TV shows and movies, popularity of Viking history has increased is like a sort of popular culture trend material. Maybe it is a good thing for Scandinavians to honor and appreciate their ancestors, or touristic purposes for their countries. But, these excessive amount of social media interests from ignorant people might destroy and mislead the true sense and concept of the Viking culture. What do you think?
Love this podcast. A wish for a future guest, Cat Jarman. The English/Norwegian bioarchaeologist and author of the great book River Kings. She's been working a lot with the Great Heathen Army Winter Camp in Repton. Would love to hear you dive into that.

Do you have any plans on doing videos of what food was eaten in the viking age by us here in Sweden? Would be really cool to see
Loved this episode. I can see children assuming adult roles in the viking world. Children were given much responsiblity in the old days. They lived up to expectations. They were tough. They grew up fast. I see farm kids doing adult jobs and acting like adults. Kids are incredible. Ben looks like he could be a member of Amon Amarth. 🤘 And thank you for your service, Johan. 😊 I look forward to the next episode. 👍
I think but not sure. Ones a thrall was set free. They still where not 100 % part of the social world and did not have the same rights. Only their childeren became full accepted
I dont know about you people but fighting and coming out alive in close quarters sword/axe fighting smelling iron and feeling exhausted while feeling peoples life force drain as you cut them down aswell as showing no mercy. Id have trouble hearing clashing of steel or smelling blood after a few
How is it controversial to say that women weren't warriors? They weren't. Just because they found ONE grave with a woman who had some weapons in it, doesn't mean women were warriors. If this is controversial, there is something wrong where he is studying the subject.
The whole framing of viking warriors as "elites" . . . like, yes, in a sense--in the sense that they were on top of their societies. The same way that people who are willing to murder, rob, and burgle are at the top of any criminal society. But that doesn't mean vikings were like posh aristocrats. More just like dominant gangsters in what was otherwise a relatively poor society. You had your rich kings, sure. But every norsemen who went to battle was posh? No way.
And to elaborate on that point: they were at the top of *their own* society. But they weren't at the top of civilized society. They were living contemporaneously with full fledged civilizations like Byzantium and the Carolingian Empire, which were richer and more refined.
Poor? Lmao. Tacitus called it rich allready 100 CE. Sweden had massive wealth already in the bronze age. They weren't gangsters. They were warrior and we've had a warrior culture in Europe for 40.000 years, before christianity.
Ben is barely old enough to drink, let alone have well defined theories or ideas about the Viking age. He reminds me of one of these kids that is way to far into European Sword Techniques for his own good. I do not place much stock in Academics, particularly this modern ilk with their odd socialist ideas that they continue to foist upon the past. I have had to choke through far to many theories on Vikings being black, or Muslim, or anything other than who they actually were.
First of all - Have you even watched/listened to the episode? Ben is one of the foremost experts within his field. He is also part of a number of Viking Age projects that gathers up world leading academics, such as the Viking Phenomenon. He also co-wrote a book on the topic toghether with Distingueshed Professor of Archaeology, Neil Price, that was published recently. Secondly - Letting age (btw, Ben is not as young as you seem to think) decide competence or qualifications is ignorant. It would be like disregarding the advice from a "young" doctor regarding your health when seriously ill. Don't fall into the old man trap with the ideas that wisdom and knowledge comes with age. There are plenty of incredibly stupid and clueless old people.
Yeah it's pathetic when liberals dive into these fields on the grounds of politics. I agree with those points. But I've only listened to half this episode so far and I don't think he has said anything wrong so far. So you have to specify more what you mean.
