    My wife and I bought a PAIR of Mach Es in 2021. We will never go back to gasoline. No gas stations, no oil changes, no water pump, fuel pump, transmission, exhaust, radiator, fuel injectors, alternator , belts......
    In 48,000 miles, we've saved $1,390.00 on oil changes alone. We save at LEAST $0.10 per mile over gasoline saving another $4,800 on fuel. Best thing is, 92% of our charging is at night in the garage.

      You are the ideal buyer. You know your own needs, you keep records, you made rational decisions.
      It's unfortunate that so many EV buying decisions have been made on emotion alone, leading to disappointing mismatches with expectations.
      If buyers can cope with the depreciation and the various limitations and it works for them, great!
      An EV is unlikely ever to suit me, but I'm fine with everybody matching their purchases to their needs - why not?
      What a lot of us feel uncomfortable about is the forcing that politics has introduced into the market, for no valid reason. It will be interesting to see where that goes.

      When the time to change batteries (maybe 200k miles or 15-20 years), you can throw away all your savings or just garbage the paperweights. I would rather forget about all the hussles of charging if the savings will be balanced out by the changing of batteries later.

      You need to change the oil in the gearbox and there is coolant, water pumps and a radiator. I'm all for EVs but this information is false.

      I don't know about the US but in Europe depreciation is disturbing on EV's, no one wants them second hand

    Fascinating all the emotional need to believe in BEV failure. I still use a Nokia with ton of buttons and NEVER doing a touch screen phone. hahaha

    Even if you want an EV, get a used Tesla, 1-2 years old, and save 50% or more. There are thousands to choose from. EVs depreciate dramatically, the most of all car types. Why buy new?

      Due to .9% financing by Tesla and $7500 to $9500 EV tax incentives, used market dropping like a stone. Those cars still come with 8 year warranty

      That's true of cars in general, in 4 decades I've never bought new car. Depreciation normally by far the biggest cost. Bought my beloved BMW E92-M3 for $40k discount to sticker, still "like new" to me, pristine--that was $8k per yr cost to original owner when I bought 6 yrs ago.

      @@Mrbfgray yes all or most cars depreciate, but the point is that EVs are the highest depreciating cars by far. There are 8-10 yr old Model S (MSRP $70k minimum) now on used market for under $15k and thats before negotiating. So degree matters.

But yes BEVs have advanced extremely fast, while new ICE cars have become more expensive and only marginally better, BEVs have become much better *and cheaper,* therefore used ones also cheaper faster. Temporary situation as tech asymptotically reaches maturity.
      It's not that BEVs loose *intrinsic value* faster, quite the contrary. It's relative value to new tech.

    EV improvement is like human athletics. Seventy years ago in 1954 Roger Banister broke the 4 minute mile barrier. 70 years later the record is 3.43 set 25 years ago.
    Chemistry can't evolve, the technology will plateau and incremental improvements will be too costly. We might as well promise to increase the energy density of gasoline.
    Battery recycling will prove to be uneconomical. Only 20 pounds of lithium is in a 1,000 pound battery and only 70 percent can be recovered. Recycling is not worth the effort.
    Solar panels are also not often recycled. The future law might mandate recycling, but who pays?

      ​@danielstapler4315 That may be true, but a counter argument is that more subtle drugs are now available, and testing is always lagging behind.
      Meanwhile training has become incredibly sophisticated and intense, without succeeding in affecting that barrier.

      My feeling is that recycling will be mandated, and the final owner of the vehicle will be targeted as the obvious person to pay.
      For that reason I've often said I think most BEVs will end up in flames, as the final owners realise that they can't pay to get rid of them, so may as well try insurance fraud.
      So much for green credentials.
      I also regularly stress your point that chemistry and physics can't change. EV buyers may not grasp the implications of this but governments certainly know, and still act irrationally.
      I think your analogy is a good one.
      It's as if governments have been spending untold money resurfacing all athletics tracks globally for best results, while the car manufacturers have been providing every finalist since Roger Bannister with a huge array of state of the art running shoes, each of which promises to be the one.... yet nothing has worked and the limit has been reached.
      A huge discount on track shoes at this stage won't make any difference, and there is no money left to replace all the track surfaces yet again.

      Rational arguments do not land with the EVangelists. Because they want their "miracle cure" to be true, it eventually will be.
      I, as you do, question the "future will be like the past" thinking that predominates these discussions. Improvements in computing power are no longer doubling every few years. Capital is no longer available or is far more expensive. And grade inflation has significantly reduced the numbers of potential brainiacs to make all these improvements reality. I'm no saying this EV nirvana can't happen, just saying there are many reasons to doubt that it will.😊

      And, your electric rates are only going up as well. North of 0.30/kwh in many places. There will be no long term savings. But then, EVs are more like a cellphone than a vehicle: use it three years and "throw it away". The depreciation is where all of your "savings" in gas and maintenance will disappear.

      FALSE!!! With solar you still pay for it. Just upfront, or over time by financing the panels and the installation. I have solar on my house. Works great. But it is, in no way, "FREE".
