The HORRIFYING REALITY of DREADNOUGHTS

  • Standing three times the height of a man, these towering war machines bear powerful weapons and are as lethal at range as in close assault. A Space Marine chapter's Dreadnoughts are treasured relics in the Warhammer 40k setting, only awoken in great need. Encased inside every Dreadnought lies a mighty Space Marine hero, who has suffered grievous wounds in battle, saved only by his internment. Venerable Dreadnoughts bring their wisdom to the Chapter in times of peace, and immense battlefield experience in times of war.

@@samuelfelixdasilva1791It's stupid and short-sighted is what it is. The whole point of Dreadnoughts is so that their pilots can continue to serve for as long as they can, serving as reliquaries of knowledge and experience alongside allowing the fallen brothers within to still serve rather than be executed or languish in some retirement home. They're meant, in a way, to save the brothers from being lost through death by preserving them for as long as possible while remaining capable combatants.
Making a Pattern that _burns_ through users like las munitions in a fight against the Tyranids is the complete opposite of the point. Even the Leviathans probably didn't burn through pilots as quickly, and even then they can be somewhat justified thanks to the sheer amount of firepower the Pattern provides.

There is body horror here and that would be psychologically difficult for the pilot to process. But perhaps they get used to it over time and realize they are the equivalent of a walking war-machine god, able to shape the outcome of battles.
The worst part of being in a DN is probably the down-time between battles. Nothing to do except wait for the next battle and contemplate existence. Terrible.

Then again if you ask the right space Marine... depending on the damage it might feel better to be in a dreadnaught then in a suit of armor... even though the dreadnaught is a suit of armor in its own right...
What am I getting at... a space Marine gets put into after experiencing near death or literally death.... there is a chance that the new body feels better than having a suit of armor half integrated into your body...
For instance ol red... he may be in solitude still but his solitude is basically the equivalency of "just send him on a solo mission he'll be back with us when he's ready to share his adventures with his brothers"
This creating a second category of isolation of ones self for a moment...
Sleeping or just needs to move... but it's how their doing it... for example prolonged periods of nothing to do leads to a harder strain on their psyche. But giving them something like being a part of the supply chain of getting things from one place that their stored to another place they are needed...
While yes automation is possible but what about directly after a battle or just before with a little added muscle for moving the munitions around we could theoretically shorten supply times.... that's just if they "decide" to start helping their automation. And systematic way of doing things.

Malcharion of the Night Lords deserves a special mention.
His sarcophagus is modeled with a stylized mural statue of him in life, holding the helm of a loyalist captain in each hand, with the third under his boot, signifying his greatest triumph in slaying 3 company captains single handedly during the Siege of Terra.
Yet despite being highly venerated by his Night Lord bretheren as The War Sage, it's met with a "Grandpa's getting too old for this shit, but I wont pass up an opportunity to kick ass in midnight clad at least" attitude.

Insanity always stalks the long lived. You think regular Astartes are immune ?
Centuries ,Millennia, of battle, after battle after battle, with nothing to look forward to, nothing but more of the same.
The Salamanders are wise to have mortal families. It helps remind them why they fight. Though i disagree with their battle doctrine,i admire Vulkan's Sagacity!
People forget that great crafters, are often sages in their own right; intellects to equal any down the ages.
Did not the Emperor call Vulkan, his perfect son?
Ferocity, intellect, and a heart bigger than the galaxy!
People speak of Sanguinious, but he had his dark side. Ask Curze sometime. of course he's still around! You think a little thing like a bullet i the brain, can permanently end a Primarch? HA!
He's still around , though under what name, doing what ..not even the God Emperor knows.
Curze was sneakier that Alpharious when he wanted to be. Assuming you can locate Alpharious, to compare them, or trust what he tells you.
Not his fault, Malcador had his rearing, its only natural to have a ..malleable sense of what is true.
