I actually prefer car's that run closer to their factory stock times. This was a great race between two very nice machine's. That's all that should matter.
I am a Mopar fan, but alway's liked the '68/9 Buick GS styling, and that Chevelle is sweet too, and not to leave Old's out as that Hurst sure is hot. 👍

But it wasn't a fair race. they both offered a standard 325hp version of those engines and it went up from there. There were faster GS Buicks that year with the same 400 size engine but it wasn't used in the race. The stage one and two packages. But there using top dog SS Chevelle. This is such a biased comparison

Great race! Three beautiful classics...GM really had the styling nailed down in the mid to late sixties. The GS actually ran a little better than I thought... for a 340 horse with highway gears. With the Stage 1 option and steeper gearing, the Buick just may have come out on top. Always loved those L78 Chevelles, and the '68-'69 Hurst Olds. Thanks for posting.

Buick gs was always a great car, just didn't have all the aftermarket racing parts that chevy had. Basically because of cost since chevy parts were cheaper. That L78 is just a L88 427 heads, cam, etc, in a 396. L88 was like 512 hp while the 396 was around 470 hp. Back in 69 if you brought home $180 a week you were doing good. That's why you don't see all these car in abundance. Some of the options cost like a month's pay. People didn't finance cars back then. They lived within their means. That's why you'll see an option someone didn't buy for like $50. You have to remember you could fill the gas tank for $ 6. That's alot of gas you could buy. T.V.s were made in USA and a 24" color TV cost $550-600 . I can buy a 70" TV now for that price.

You bore a 396 out to 427 and compression will be very similar. Both awesome engines and I've driven both back in the day and it was the driver who won the race since both engines made those bias ply tires seem like roller skate wheels. I have a 68 GS400 I bought from my dad. It is a great car but will never be a drag strip demon. Its got lots of torque to move 3800 pounds through an AT and the 3.42 gear (because it has AC.) Otherwise its a 2.93 gear. Hardly a gear for the quarter mile. Good smooth mid range power, but would never match that fast revving lighter 396. Wish my dad had ordered the Stage 1 Special Package installed at the dealer which added 50 hp and knocked a second off the et with a 3.64 rear end.

This is a top hp 396 Chevelle 375hp. Chevy had lower hp 396 Chevelle's like the factory standard 325hp and the next up 350hp 396. The Buick here was the standard 400 with 325hp standard gearing. not the Next up stage 1 or the next one up Stage 2 GS. So it's just not a fair comparison. It means nothing if your not comparing top dog to top dog or even who got the best bang for the buck with the two lower 325hp version of the SS Chevelle and the GS Skylark. But this race here proves nothing!

@@parodynuts5407 I'm not sure how you long you've been around drag racing or performance vehicles, but the extremely limited mods that are allowed in Pure Stock wouldn't net you even a second, let alone more 2+. The biggest gain would come via compression at 1.5 points (assuming you choose to do that mod). Depending on displacement, you can expect 3-5% HP gains per compression point. In the case of this car @ 375 factory HP, that's roughly 20 HP. Next large gain would be rear gears but that is limited to options that were available from the factory, so not much room for improvement there. The driver definitely comes into play, but these ETs aren't even close...
Also, I went back and looked and I was wrong or couldnt find it, the only silver 69 Chevelle SS396 I found on here was running high 13s. That seems accurate with every mod possible. Not sure what car on this channels i was thinking of.
