  • ENGINE KNOCK METAL IN THE OIL PAN
In this video we noticed some metal shaving in our oil and oil pan and the car developed an engine knock. We took the head apart we did not find anything that could cause the metal shaving. After some further investigation we found out that it is aluminum. Once we took the head off we noticed that the engine block and the pistons had some wear. Especially cylinder 1 and 3. The car developed piston slap.

Question - why did you do all of this work? Is this your personal car? A warranty job? The videos are very good and I own a hyundai, so thank you. Just trying to understand the meaning behind all of this work.

That's their daily car for their business, maybe. In Bulgaria car repair shops in small towns with high unemployment rates charge 3-4$ per hour for labor and profit from the turnover and from small mark-ups on car parts. We don't value our own labor much - for these Bulgarian dudes the cost of this repair is just the value of the new parts, the charge by the machine shop and the new oil. Heck, I have a PhD in Economics from a Western university and can charge hundreds of $$$ per hour for consulting if I had any business acumen, but still spent a whole weekend fitting a new bumper after a minor car crash, instead of paying somebody 100€ to do it in an hour (I'm based in Germany). To you this repair costs 4000$, but to these guys it's maybe 400$ max, since they have the skills and the tools. And they make some great content for DIYers, which makes them happy, it seems, and is great for the rest of us.

People complain about the new direct injection turbocharged engines because they are prone to carbon buildup so Hyundai wanted to make a competitive mpi, naturally aspirated engine, and tweaked it somehow to make it competitive in therms of fuel economy but apparently these engines( not sure if that’s the same engine here), develop knocking which is not good. Possibly this is why this engine failed.

I am a mechanic but i do not estimate jobs. I work on diesel trucks and I have installed new 6.7 engines in powerstroke trucks with total price after tax over 27000 canadian dollars. I think thats about 18000 us. I would guess that you could spend 6500 to 8500 if you use a trustworthy shop like where i work. We use reliable american machine shops and pay for top skills and shop equipment. Especially diagnostic electronics. Lab scopes and hundreds of thousands of dollars of tooling to get the job done right. My diesel diag time is $190 an hour. Most of the money goes to shop equipment. If you want top quality work, guaranteed job promise time and pinpoint accurate diagnostics, shop time costs a lot more. My employer will send us for one day 500$ a person training sessions. It costs a fortune these days.
