- "It is the year 0079 of the Universal Century. A half-century has passed since Earth began moving its burgeoning population into gigantic orbiting space colonies. A new home for mankind, where people are born and raised. And die. 9 months ago, the cluster of colonies furthest from the Earth, called Side 3, proclaimed itself the Principality of Zeon and launched a war of independence against the Earth Federation. Initial fighting lasted over one month and saw both sides lose half their respective populations. People were horrified by the indescribable atrocities that had been committed in the name of independence. Eight months had passed since the rebellion began. They were at a stalemate."

@@yolsil775 Yep and as far as giant robots go, my preferred size is average mobile suit size or gundam size, so, 15 to 17 meters tall. Standard Size Armored Cores are acceptable too, at 10 to 12 meters.

The UC never really could catch a break, its kind of sad for the people living in that universe.
They have seen more devastation and suffering than we in the real world till now could dish out upon ourself, they almost glassed their own damn planet on multiple ocassions.

Just because Zeeks keep fighting a war they lost in 0079, for another 30 years to appease their endless butt-hurt, through more colony drops, which has led to more political instability in the federation and the justification of atrocities like the Titans and other radical groups , both in the terrestrial sphere and in the colonies, in response, in an endless cycle.
and that was on Both Sides. Zeon and the Federation just battered each other to near extinction.

@@yusrisaadun5497 at the beginning of 0079 its stated that there are around 11 billion people, half of which live in space, during one week war 3 billion died, the colony drop, another 2.3 billion, after antarctic treaty, until end of OYW only a a couple hundred million from sides. that was about 50% just during the one year war, not to mention the obliteration of the EFSF fleet during the naval review AND a colony drop (0083), another colony drop in 0088 (ZZ), and 0093 (CCA) each, the initial death tolls in the hundreds of millions, but billions due to the after effects of each drop, by 0105 earth seems kinda sparse, and not many colonies left in space

Recently watch Iron blooded orphans, couldn't decide what to watch next. This convinced me to watch them all.
All of them are good but Universal Century has the most meat.

I started on IBO, and it's still my personal favorite, but hot damn is the UC good.

The wonderful thing about Gundam is that all of the alternate timelines play with the same core themes in new ways with new lore and art styles, so there’s a ton of variety here even if it’s all at its core part of the same thing. Plus whenever you start to burn out on UC stuff you can hop to another timeline for a bit to get some fresh air.

I've always leaned more towards zeon over federation not on a dictator level more on the struggles colony humans had to endure and the fight for freedom in a solar system ruled by crooked powers of varying levels vying for control but ultimately it's the little guys that always paid the price civilians and soldiers.
Be it in war or after it was over the ptsd etc the struggles to cope with the horrors of such death on grand scale.
Gundam as a franchise opens a picture into not just the political machinations of those in power but the struggles of victims on both sides of war.
A very solid thought provoking franchise which is why it withstands the test of time to this day

Sad part is, the Universal Century is doomed to this fate.
You know Gundam Unicorn? It provided some hope, but in the end, Banagher, Mineva, everyone in the Laplace faction ultimately died without ever seeing that world they fought for coming to pass, and all their efforts being for naught in the end.
And if Gaia Gear is to be taken as canon, even two hundred years into the Universal Century, the only ones who have found peace are the dead.
And at the very end of it all, even after the end of U.C., there will *still* be no peace. Turn A confirms this.
Considering that several other timelines outside of the UC fall on the timeline of Turn A, yeah that especially rings true.

Master Piece of AMV. The Real Gundam is UC always. The other AUs go from good to bad in some cases. Although I never consider Turn A Gundam the future of all universes. It's just another excellent AU and that's it.
Yeah Turn A is... questionable at best. and the secret weapon of the Turn A is the most counter productive crap I've ever heard of. Technology has always saved more lives than it killed. Even when you factor in a few colony drops.

I understand but I think in every UC series showing that both sides aren't any better. Like Gihren Zabi straight up killing the whole populace and while Feddies are corrupts that even the famous higher up like General Revil call them out in his speech, Zeon Is Exhausted.

No matter what you say if you really think about it the one year war is the Afghanistan of Gundam for the simple reason that the Federation can't capture all zeon prisoners in space and when the Federation went through its little Titan phrase it didn't help

Some say "Gundam is Anti-War" but i feel that description is a disservice. Anti-War always seems to come from those who are cowardly, ironically willing to sacrifice others for their ideals, and who speak from a position of ignorance.
Gundam is a exposay on the nature of war and man. It does not cowar away from the dark truths and from the horror (at least to the extent the studio will allow) and thus it hits those hard truths harder than any shallow anti-war message ever will. Because only those who had once been lost in the dark can appreciate the light for all it's worth.
In my opinion, Gundam has always treated war as a necessary evil.
Yes, it's horrible.
Yes, it would be better if one did not have to fight at all - but at the end of the day, that in and of itself may not be feasible.
When it comes down to it, even the most staunch pacifists in the entire series have a very clear understanding that there will always be a time when they must climb back into the cockpit and go into battle to protect those they love.
But it also shows the good aspects of man. The Zeon scout pilots who turned back to check on refugees who disembarked the White Base, and genuinely were concerned for them, the refugee mother who bandaged up the injured pilots after they were shot down, and so forth.
Gundam is anti war in an honest and non head-up-the-ass way. a realistic look at how war sucks, while mostly acknowledging that its never going to fully go away.
@@zeehero7280 that good half of man is part of why I can't agree with lumping it in with the "anti-war" crowd, those people spit on and actively endanger soldiers who return from war, and have done so for hundreds of years, with my earliest specific story being of a Crucader who became a Monk, and the head of his monetary deliberately putting him on a road full of murderous bandits who had previously murdered a visitor to said monetary, just so the former Crucader would be killed because the head of the monetary couldn't stand the thought of allowing a "murderer" to stay among his brothers.
Association with those who are "anti-war" always means you end up getting used either to the point of your own death, or to put us all on a path towards worse violence and eventual war.
The history of humanity could also be called the history of war.

But secondly: if you were piloting a Zaku II by the time the Jeagans and similar suits were being deployed wouldn’t it be better to engage in melee with thim instead of having a shoot out? (If you could get close enough obviously)
I doubt it will made any difference. Although Jaegan is a light armored MS, it is still a 0090 model and it should have a much better armor than mere Zaku or any GM in OYW, I doubt that Zaku's Heat Hawk can cut through the armor before Jaegan's beam saber has pierce through Zaku's cockpit.
@@williaml.willowfield2220 The armor isn't really the issue, a Jegan is just plain faster. "long" range is actually better if you're using a Zaku Bazooka or Sturm Faust.
A Jegan is around equal to the OG RX-78 in terms of raw stats, and Zaku IIs were slaughtered like lame pigs by the Gundam. You do the math.

Different universe
The dark history of Turn A Gundam links the universal century with after colony, after war, and g gundam as humanity never learned its lesson and newtypes left the earthsphere altogether. But given that turn x was developed by these humans that left the solar system and lead to another war resulting in the turn a and x destroying all technology to do it all over again, the gundam franchise never gets a happy ending.
