I don't think the fight was really about the girl. It was about ego. Johnny probably had multiple girls he was seeing at once and this one was just another one on the list. Daniel just wanted to show off (thinking the karate he learned was good enough for Johnny) but it failed because Johnny was at a higher level than Daniel. Daniel's bruised ego motivated him to seek a better teacher and that allowed him to level up. He is still about showing off. The girl isn't that important. The purpose for learning karate is to show off so others respect you and so that is the only reason he does it. If he can't use it to repair his reputation it serves no other purpose. No where do you see him using the karate to say, save a person's life a from thug wielding a knife and threatening innocent people. Kreese the teacher of Johnny killed people for his country. He saved lives by killing the bad guys. In war there is no rules. So Cobra Kai is really what true Karate is for: yoou kill in self defence if someone tries to kill you. Daniel only does the karate to repair his ego. He lost the fight but didn't bow down to his superior opponent out of respect. He was too focused on not looking bad. Miyagi should have taught Johhny so that he can fight Kreese since Johnny was being asked to cheat. I think that would have been a good ending to Karate Kid where Daniel actually loses the tournament but miyagi and Johnny and Daniel hold a secret tournament after the one in the movie to determine which is superior. And Johnny beats Daniel fair and square in a fair match without Kreese involvement. Whoever loses must take orders from the winner. Then after the match, both Daniel the showoff, and Johnny (who is honorable because he doesn't like to win by cheating) then go and beat up Kreese in a 2 vs 1 fight. (it's fair because Kreese is a full blown killer for army and a fully grown adult) The attempt ends in a tie and miyagi himself then joins the cobra kai dojo to learn from Kreese to add to his knowledge. He is proud that Kreese didn't lose to the fight against the two students, and they shake hands and the movie ends where Kreese and Miyagi join forces to make a business together. The moral of the story is Daniel is not the important one: he was motivated by a need to show off that makes him want to upgrade his skill. Johnny is not the bad guy he is just like any one of you. And Kreese served his country killing to save your nation from bad people. (ok the war was not justified haha but he didn't know that he was just taking orders ok?) Kreese needs his own series where he and Miyagi actually made peace with each other. Without Kreese Johnny would get bullied all the time and so it instiled confidence in Johnny to have a teacher such as Kreese. That is why I think a reboot of Karate Kid should be a retelling of no.1 where Kreese is not a generic bad guy but extremely skilled fighter who had to cheat because he was trying to instill an important lesson to his students that on the streets there is NO RULES so being aggressive to cripple the enemy can stop them attacking you. (just because it is against tournament rules it doesn't mean it's not a useful lesson to teach because street fighters dont play by tournament rules and you may need to cripple people to survive a life and death situation in a street fight vs a gang). It's not necessarily evil just a different strategy to fighting. In war you have to strike before they do and sometimes its better that way. Sometimes a good defense is a strong offense. Bruce Lee himself fights that way because if you are slow, you lose opportunity for doing damage and the enemy can defend before you can exploit his opening. If you can do heavy damage to his body, then he might not be able to continue the fight in injured form thus ending the fight earlier and allowing you to focus on the next target earlier which minimises risk to yourself. (less targets to fight at once = less risk in losing) That is not to say Miyagi is WRONG, it is just a reality of war that crippling people to disable their ability to fight you effectively is a legit move in street fights. If I smack a crowbar into your knees so you can not run away, and it causes you enough pain that I can finish you off with a fancy finisher and end the fight faster, then it means I have saved stamina and time. What if you came to the fight with 3 people to attack me? The speed at which I take out one target means I can prevent attacks from other targets trying to attack me at the same time. So speed in crippling people so you can end the fight faster is necessary in street fights where there is no tournament rules. In a 1 vs 1 tournament you only have one target to fight. But that is not realistic in wars. Enemy will always play unfair if they can get away with it. (war being one example where you only enter battle if you have all the advantage to minimise risk of losses to yourself) Therefore Kreese could make a philosophical argument to Miyagi that he is making boys stronger by teaching them to not assume opponents fight with honor. Assume nothing and fight them as if they were thugs with no code of ethics in a fight. That way you are not the victim and always on top. Of course it is politically incorrect to teach that to kids but when you send them to war all the rules are thrown out anyway. It's preparing them to be killers if foreign enemy shows no mercy. If you are better killer than them, then the foreign army respects you enough not to mess with you. (it deters future attempts to bully you) But if you only attack in defence only, they enemy can exploit your weakness by having more people to attack you together at once. (this is never a good strategy to fight a battle where you have all the disadvantages - ie 1 vs a whole gang) Kreese + Miyagi together teaching at a dojo brings balance. Miyagi style is for dealing with regular people who don't know karate and so you go soft on them so as not to kill them by accident. And Cobra style is useful against gangs of thugs who want to kill you and you must respond with lethal force to survive or you die. Anyway that is how I would do remake of the movie which is updated for 2023 audience who would want to see a R rated version of the original where you get to see people break bones, die in a fight or suffer terrible injuries during fights. The original will always be a classic 80s chees movie. But we live in a time of Post-John Wick world where people expectations are much higher and they are much more cynical. (" dude did you see that shit? That was so unrealistic and would not work in real life if I did that")

I don't think the fight was really about the girl. It was about ego. Johnny probably had multiple girls he was seeing at once and this one was just another one on the list. Daniel just wanted to show off (thinking the karate he learned was good enough for Johnny) but it failed because Johnny was at a higher level than Daniel. Daniel's bruised ego motivated him to seek a better teacher and that allowed him to level up. He is still about showing off. The girl isn't that important.
The purpose for learning karate is to show off so others respect you and so that is the only reason he does it. If he can't use it to repair his reputation it serves no other purpose. No where do you see him using the karate to say, save a person's life a from thug wielding a knife and threatening innocent people. Kreese the teacher of Johnny killed people for his country. He saved lives by killing the bad guys. In war there is no rules.
So Cobra Kai is really what true Karate is for: yoou kill in self defence if someone tries to kill you. Daniel only does the karate to repair his ego. He lost the fight but didn't bow down to his superior opponent out of respect. He was too focused on not looking bad. Miyagi should have taught Johhny so that he can fight Kreese since Johnny was being asked to cheat. I think that would have been a good ending to Karate Kid where Daniel actually loses the tournament but miyagi and Johnny and Daniel hold a secret tournament after the one in the movie to determine which is superior. And Johnny beats Daniel fair and square in a fair match without Kreese involvement. Whoever loses must take orders from the winner. Then after the match, both Daniel the showoff, and Johnny (who is honorable because he doesn't like to win by cheating) then go and beat up Kreese in a 2 vs 1 fight. (it's fair because Kreese is a full blown killer for army and a fully grown adult) The attempt ends in a tie and miyagi himself then joins the cobra kai dojo to learn from Kreese to add to his knowledge. He is proud that Kreese didn't lose to the fight against the two students, and they shake hands and the movie ends where Kreese and Miyagi join forces to make a business together.
The moral of the story is Daniel is not the important one: he was motivated by a need to show off that makes him want to upgrade his skill. Johnny is not the bad guy he is just like any one of you. And Kreese served his country killing to save your nation from bad people. (ok the war was not justified haha but he didn't know that he was just taking orders ok?)
Kreese needs his own series where he and Miyagi actually made peace with each other. Without Kreese Johnny would get bullied all the time and so it instiled confidence in Johnny to have a teacher such as Kreese. That is why I think a reboot of Karate Kid should be a retelling of no.1 where Kreese is not a generic bad guy but extremely skilled fighter who had to cheat because he was trying to instill an important lesson to his students that on the streets there is NO RULES so being aggressive to cripple the enemy can stop them attacking you. (just because it is against tournament rules it doesn't mean it's not a useful lesson to teach because street fighters dont play by tournament rules and you may need to cripple people to survive a life and death situation in a street fight vs a gang).
It's not necessarily evil just a different strategy to fighting. In war you have to strike before they do and sometimes its better that way. Sometimes a good defense is a strong offense. Bruce Lee himself fights that way because if you are slow, you lose opportunity for doing damage and the enemy can defend before you can exploit his opening. If you can do heavy damage to his body, then he might not be able to continue the fight in injured form thus ending the fight earlier and allowing you to focus on the next target earlier which minimises risk to yourself. (less targets to fight at once = less risk in losing)
That is not to say Miyagi is WRONG, it is just a reality of war that crippling people to disable their ability to fight you effectively is a legit move in street fights. If I smack a crowbar into your knees so you can not run away, and it causes you enough pain that I can finish you off with a fancy finisher and end the fight faster, then it means I have saved stamina and time. What if you came to the fight with 3 people to attack me? The speed at which I take out one target means I can prevent attacks from other targets trying to attack me at the same time. So speed in crippling people so you can end the fight faster is necessary in street fights where there is no tournament rules. In a 1 vs 1 tournament you only have one target to fight. But that is not realistic in wars. Enemy will always play unfair if they can get away with it. (war being one example where you only enter battle if you have all the advantage to minimise risk of losses to yourself)
Therefore Kreese could make a philosophical argument to Miyagi that he is making boys stronger by teaching them to not assume opponents fight with honor. Assume nothing and fight them as if they were thugs with no code of ethics in a fight. That way you are not the victim and always on top.
Of course it is politically incorrect to teach that to kids but when you send them to war all the rules are thrown out anyway. It's preparing them to be killers if foreign enemy shows no mercy. If you are better killer than them, then the foreign army respects you enough not to mess with you. (it deters future attempts to bully you)
But if you only attack in defence only, they enemy can exploit your weakness by having more people to attack you together at once. (this is never a good strategy to fight a battle where you have all the disadvantages - ie 1 vs a whole gang) Kreese + Miyagi together teaching at a dojo brings balance. Miyagi style is for dealing with regular people who don't know karate and so you go soft on them so as not to kill them by accident. And Cobra style is useful against gangs of thugs who want to kill you and you must respond with lethal force to survive or you die.
Anyway that is how I would do remake of the movie which is updated for 2023 audience who would want to see a R rated version of the original where you get to see people break bones, die in a fight or suffer terrible injuries during fights. The original will always be a classic 80s chees movie. But we live in a time of Post-John Wick world where people expectations are much higher and they are much more cynical. (" dude did you see that shit? That was so unrealistic and would not work in real life if I did that")
