Coming up on 5 years since this video was put out and this guy still responds....that is truly amazing. Thank you for the knowledge. My chicks dont have pasty butt but ive been dreading it as a BRAND NEW chick owner. Some of them even seem to be getting the start of feathers on their wings! Thank you for your channel and knowledge. I have subbed!
1st time chick owner. I had one of my chicks that had this problem and had no idea what it was. Thank you for the video and instructions! She is back to normal and thriving 💜🐣 I’ve watched several of your chicken videos before I purchased mine & it’s helped tremendously! Love the videos keep them coming 👍🏻
i just got 6 baby chicks last night from tractor supply and i noticed that one of them got poopy butt and i didn’t realize this could kill it! thank you so much for being informational since this is my first time raising chickens!!
Idk why this video got recommended to me but this is just wholesome 🥺 I don’t have any chicks but this man was just so gentle and chill. Bless this man! 💕
Thanks for the video. You're a great teacher. I think a couple of my chicks got pasty butt because my kitten is way too interested in the chicks. So I have modified their living space to give them more privacy from kitty. Plus daily vent cleaning on the 2 - of course. Thanks for the friendly, helpful vid!
I'm watching you do it and seeing your method work. For some reason that never works for me. I end up bathing them in warm water using a cup to run water over their backside and then massaging the area to break it up. Pat the chicks dry. I use a heat plate instead of a light they run under it hide for an hour or two and emerge no worse for wear. Great info on this Josh.
OmG you have no idea how much you have eased my fears. The runt of the chicks keeps getting blocked up and I was really scared she was gonna die. It’s day two of cleaning her bottom, and I’m really hoping she gets better.
I notice my Sick Cockatiel had this, and started looking for videos to help me do it correctly, and I ran into your video. Thank you so much, this was very helpful. My Cockatiel is doing better already. Thank you!
Great info! I have old baby cereal bowls... They work great for putting a small amount of warm water, dunk the tush, wait a minute or so, and use a qtip to wipe away the stool and clean the outside of the vent! Love the channel!
Thanks so much for making this video. It was very reassuring to watch. Two of my new eight chicks had big poop globs stuck to their vents, and I cleaned it gently off with a dot of Dawn and warm water. Then I rubbed them dry, and put them back under their heat lamp. They’re happily grooming themselves. Which is adorable.
Thank you greatly !!!!! I was raised on a farm until i was 9 but it’s amazing how much you learn and how much you don’t know. How much you don’t know is far greater!!! Thank you for the tough stuff!!!
My family is pretty new to taking care of chickens and our latest barred rock hatchlings we got one the other day had the start of pasty butt, I was worried something was seriously wrong but after I watching a few videos on this I was happy to learn this can be easily treated :) grateful to the whole farming community on yt otherwise I feel like I’d be pretty lost by now
I've had to dip their bottoms to kinda soak to get them cleaned up before . And a dab of Vaseline to prevent the next stool from immediately sticking ..
Thank you, we have 6 chickens and my Sapphire Gem got poopy butt :( she became lethargic and I saw her butt was clogged up. I used a dish with some warm water and let her butt soak and slowly started working that poo away. Holding her in a little towel afterward for a bit helped keep her calm. It was cute and she seems to trust me now more than the rest of them. 😂 the other ones were so mad when I took her out, she’s secretly a favorite.
I appreciate this. For new bird owners this can be a terrifying condition if they don't know how to cope with it. I've known coop keepers who think this condition is always fatal and just put them out of their mystery when this happens.
Yesterday i bought one but i really loved him ❤ today he got really sick and he got a pasty butt soo i opened this vedio and it really helped my babyy thank you so much ❤😭
This is my third time raising chicks, but first time dealing with pasty butt! Loved this video, it can be nerve wracking handling chicks as they're so teeny tiny in the beginning!
@@babiesarefoodnotfriend I'm dealing with it to. But I think my chick also has an infection:(. This is my worst year for chicks. We've never has issues and lost many. Idk what to do about infections. Was told there's nothing we can do:(

My hens just hatched chicks, and they are sooo cute! Thank you for the information because I bought chicks a long time ago and one of them had this and i did it the wrong way, then about a day later it died😢 But I will make sure to do it the right way so thank you.

All of my baby chickens died like that because I didnt knew how to save them from pasty butt and one of my chicken just died right now but now I think I can fix the problem by watching this video. Thank you so much for this tutorial

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! My baby chicken was about to die, he looked so sad… immediately after I cleaned his butt he pooped I was so happy!!! THANK YOU SK MUCHHHHH
I wiped my first chick butt a few days ago My barred rock chicks are very patient with this first time chicken owner They love worms but the white grubs are their chocolate! Its so cute watching em chase each other trying to steal each others treats Great video 👍
I want to thank you for this video. It may have saved the life of a very young bird at the rescue I volunteer for 🥰 Poor little thing had poop backed up and I had no idea how to help it. After seeing your video and using a Q-tip with warm water the little bird did the most humongous poop 💩 Thank you 😁❤️
I found a old timer that told me years ago how to avoid that. Before you get your chicks hard boil a dozen organic eggs. Once a day take just the yoke and mash it with the same amount of there chick starter. They love it! I have never had one get pasty butt since I have done this! Hope it helps.
Thankyou sir!!,,,My chick was suffering form this problem,,but I haven't any idea,,what to do....from your video,,I learned this process and i applied it...now they are fine🥰
I have a chick with pasty bum, I found that a gentle stream of lukewarm water really helped me. I tired with rags and q tips to start but it seems to rough for my liking. I dried the bird off well to not chill it and everything seems good 2 days later. Maybe a few little dirty spots but the vent is staying nice and clear.
Thx so much I just got baby chicks and their so cute one is a small guinea civic who has severe pasty butt and I didn’t know what to do but now I do! Thz
Great video. I love how gentle and loving you are towards your chicks. I just became a chicken mamma and I'm so excited. They are 3 weeks old and growing strong. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Anybody who has been to a real chicken farm knows it stinks when you get inside. So that's normal. This is very important and very important for people in cities to know because big cities have live poultry markets. The people need to be aware of these issues. Don't know where you're located but I was raised on a 370 acre dairy farm in the Catskill Mountains, 250 - 300 head of Holstein dairy cows and calves. Up the road a couple of miles was the chicken farm and I went along with my dad. So yeah, this is a very important video addressing real issues. Thank you for your time and great videos, I love them.
Poop stuck to the vent can be a sign if worms. If you get a chick and poop is constantly getting stuck to its vent, separate it and give it a dewormer. This has saved many of my chicks.
I raised Keats this year I ended up having to keep them seperated they just grew so much faster than the chicks I had. They start off so small it's crazy how big they get so fast. Can't wait to see how they compare to your meat birds.
Thank you, Thank you and Thank you! i am way too new at chickens. i just got my first 4 three days ago and one developed dooky butt. i was afraid to mess with it until i saw this video, my better half and i watched this and applied what we learned.....we now have a very happy chick! needless to say we have subscribed and will be back in the future.
I just got my first chicks yesterday and noticed that some of their poor bums were "clogged" and then I found this! Thanks so much for this video. My ladies have nice clean booties now 😁
I used to have chick's and didn't know exactly how to take care of them we got rid of those ones we just got new chick's and I'm taking care of them and this video helped very much thank you
Thank you for the info, I googled the problem with my 4 day old chick and this video popped up! You probably saved Bo's life!!! Problem solved! She immediately pooped, so she was definitely in trouble! Just subscribed and liked your page!
I’m so glad I saw the comment that this was a gentle example. Google just took me to a TH-cam video that was AWFUL of this guy ripping the poop off and the baby screaming. It SUCKED! Thanks for showing how to do this and how to hold them. Liked and subscribed ⭐️
I had to clean my chick's butt a few days ago and it's case looked exactly like the severe chick. I didn't know what to do so I started soaking it's but with cold water then tried to remove the poo. I noticed when I pooled on it my chick was not reacting well so I ended up dabbing it more with water and started to remove the poo one by one. Anyway, my chick is fine now, but this video would have been helpful then. I am glad you're making education videos like this!! Thank you!!!
First time raising, picked up my chicks, day old from Meyer. One got poop butt bad. Just happen to stumble on your video. Did not know it was a problem. Was easy to clean. Thanks for the info'
What a great video Josh! I'm looking to get chicks for the first time and I'm studying up on what to do and expect. This was very helpful. I had heard of pasty butt but didn't know what it looked like or how to take care of it. Thanks for a great tutorial. - All the best. ~ Theresa
All ur videos have helped me out alot. I was kinda scared to get chick's but I went 3 weeks ago and got 6 chicks to start off with after watching alot of your videos.
I watched a video where she put a tiny bit of vasaline on their bums to keep the poop from sticking to the down. Luckily all my birds were pasty butt free :) You're really sweet with your chicks.
petroleum jelly should not be used around young birds they can ingest it and cause serious problems with their organs and with their lungs my friend...always use a water based lubricant with birds
Thank you for this, I lost one of my babies today because of this. Even after I cleaned her off. I think I was too late getting to her. First time chicken owner and doing lots of research.
I have one I think is going to die from it too. I’ve cleaned it up but it’s still completely swollen back there and now the baby is falling over and having a hard time walking. I’m thinking I didn’t catch it in time.
hey josh thank you so much for this information! i was so afraid not knowing what to do with this prob but glad i found your vid. now my chicks are doing fine!
Thank you so much for explaining pooping but and how to fix! I have a variety of new chicks, 14. One had poopy butt! It probably would have died if I wouldn't have accidentally ran across this video. Fixed it! Thank you!
Thank u so much for this video! My friend just got some baby chicks, and he noticed this problem with one of them. I did a search for videos and found yours. I'm going to send him the link now 🤗
good afternoon, good information to know because I know nothing about raising birds, still want to learn more. some day I'll have that country farm. have a good one.
Thankyou Stony Ridge Farms for the great video. I knew poopy but was an issue but your video gave me the confidence to hold my chicks bottom in 90 degree water and remove the "problem" twice (same chick I think). We are going to lick this problem and have healthy chicks.
it's normal...stress and different foods..movement...heat and cold...all this messes with the chicks gut a bit...it should pass and is very very common
I also use chick grit in their feed. Basically it's crushed stone that is pretty small, sized for chicks. Sprinkle in their food like salt n pepper. Stone in the diet for birds with gizzards is important to consider, even chicks.
I know everyone says not to get chicks wet, but my vet says differently when it comes to pasty butt. A towel wont dissolve the poop very well and you can rip the skin. Also water in the towel cools way too fast and can chill the chick. I put the chicks butt under warm running water and just let it flow and the poop will dissolve in a few minutes with minimal feather loss. The water has to be warm so you can maintain the chicks body temp. Then you want to make sure you have a clean towel and a hair drier. Towel dry the chick and then blow dry on the low heat setting until the feathers are dry and puff back up. The chicks love the blow drier and usually fall asleep. The blow drier will keep the chick warm while you dry him. Dont get a chick wet unless you can get him under a blow drier immediately. After its dry, you need to check for infections. I always use a cream based antibacterial ointment like Neosporin. Dont use the petroleum based ointments because they sit on top of the skin and can get hot and cause burns under the heat lamp.
I recently started raising chickens, and had reason to become far too intimate with my first Barred Rock chicks (yes...the dreaded pasty butt). I used a Q-tip...running 105°F water...and worked it gently until it came off. Eventually they seemed to enjoy the warm water lol. They also seemed to enjoy the blow drying they got (set on low speed and low heat, and held 18" away at minimum) to dry them off. Also! Thanks for all the videos! As a new chicken enthusiast (I REALLY like eggs, and REALLY like chicken lol) they've been beyond helpful!
This is a video of yours that I must have missed from 4years ago! Josh, from a single video of having "That Fix-It Guy" on (as he is local to me) I was absolutely hooked to your Video Series. I love watching your videos, I love how you handle the little babes with such gentleness! Im hoping to get a few baby chicks to raise as pets so I'm trying to gather as much info as I can before bringing them home n your videos are perfect and they are such a joy to watch!

A cotton bud dipped in olive oil helps too, it also helps further sticking
coconut oil is a better option, as it has antibacterial properties
I put COCONUT OIL on their vents with a q-tip to prevent this problem if they don't already have it.

Thank you for the info, I googled the problem with my 4 day old chick and this video popped up! You probably saved Bo's life!!! Problem solved! She immediately pooped, so she was definitely in trouble! Just subscribed and liked your page!
Welcome aboard
~ Theresa
Thanks! Just got first chicks yesterday. Was using a dampened qtip, but just wasn't getting it all. Thankful for the additional instruction.
Love your videos! I am a new chicken mom and watched you before I purchased my chicks!
Awesome! Thank you!
All ur videos have helped me out alot. I was kinda scared to get chick's but I went 3 weeks ago and got 6 chicks to start off with after watching alot of your videos.
I love how you are so gentle with them 🥰 new subscriber!
welcome to the channel!
Welcome God bless you
I watched a video where she put a tiny bit of vasaline on their bums to keep the poop from sticking to the down. Luckily all my birds were pasty butt free :) You're really sweet with your chicks.
petroleum jelly should not be used around young birds they can ingest it and cause serious problems with their organs and with their lungs my friend...always use a water based lubricant with birds
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer I agree. I used olive oil.
Sometimes they get a bit clogged inside too. Sometimes you can gently coax it out.
Same here but mine died 3 days ago😞

hey josh thank you so much for this information! i was so afraid not knowing what to do with this prob but glad i found your vid. now my chicks are doing fine!
Very helpful video. I didn't know what to do with this issue. Really appreciate that people out there who can show these things! Thank you 🙏
I know everyone says not to get chicks wet, but my vet says differently when it comes to pasty butt.
Thank you so much! I just helped two babies with your method. First time chick raiser in western NC.
I have been with you since before "the relationship struggles" that you painstakingly had to go through.
You have a lifelong subscriber with me!

I love watching your videos, I love how you handle the little babes with such gentleness! Im hoping to get a few baby chicks to raise as pets so I'm trying to gather as much info as I can before bringing them home n your videos are perfect and they are such a joy to watch!
Thanks for the video we got some chicks for the first time and I noticed the dry poop on two. Very helpful.
Thanks for this advice!! You may have saved 2 of my Cuckoo Marans!!
Thanks for the demonstration of how to do this gently. It helped me know what to do.
Glad it was helpful!
I used a qtip soaked in warm water. It seemed to be not as harsh as a wash cloth. ..
Warm wash cloth holds more warm water....just be gentle....q tip would work too
Thank you Sir I had 3 of my Road Iland Reds had poopy butt Again Thank you for helping me clean my chicks up I was getting worried about the babies from Clanton Alabama
