  • The hairstyles and clothes take us right back 50 years to the summer of 1972. This home movie is from a trip to Brighton by a group of friends and it is a real shame that copyright restrictions meant I couldn't have used some music from the time. So if you want to enjoy this even more, mute the sound and put on your favourite record from the time.

Are they brothers? They look like it!
I was 18, and I can truly say the 70s
    were absolutely fabulous!

I remember having hair as long as that. In my case that's around forty years ago. This is truly amazing cine footage and an absolute delight to see!

l was 18 yrs old in '72 . Brighton was the place to be . The pubs , the live gigs and concerts , the events , the shops and the bohemian and laid back vibe of those long ago days . The fashions as well . Long hair , flares , t.shirts and jeans . Great days . Sadly Brighton has changed for the worst these days and the vibrant and exciting town ( as it was then ) has been replaced by a dirty rundown and neglected city which l avoid going to as mush as possible . Glad l saw it at it's best in the 60's and 70's .

Feel the same way. The Bird's Nest, the King and Queen, and the Cottage. Oh, and the Big Apple.

@@supergran1000 The cottage . Do you mean the record shop where l spent many happy hours browsing through the LP's or the small restaurant in a narrow alleyway just off Middle Street if l recall rightly ? Another meeting place for the local Hippys .and a place l often frequented . Wish l had a time machine to take me back to the early 70's .

It’s true , the bohemian vibe has gone and now it is a very generic city .

Recognisable to me as a child in the 80s, now it’s no more the same, a corporate wasteland build upon which came before sold of to the highest bidder.

Thanks for sharing! I work in central Brighton so all the scenes are very familiar. Interesting to see before the Brighton Centre was built.

Born in Brighton 1957, (15 yrs old when this was filmed),brings back so many happy memories from my youth.. Don,t recognize the City nowadays (was a town not a City in those days). Very sadly the place has gone downhill in so many ways, and this is not just looking back through "rose coloured glasses".I now live in a village about nine miles from Brighton and rarely visit the City..Just grateful for living in the "old"Brighton of the 60s and 70s..

I was born in Brighton in 1955, and met my husband of 50 years in 1972. I was always so proud of my home town, and had a great childhood and youth. The area where we brought up our children (Coombe Road) is now overrun with students, who are dirty and antisocial. I'm sorry to sound harsh, but it's absolutely true. Moved to Burgess Hill three years ago. Not an exciting place, but quiet and clean.

Thank you for sharing this! :) I was born in Brighton in 1977, and still live here. My dad has a cine camera (and projector) which he bought in the USA in the '60s. He has reels and reels of cine film footage (of USA and UK, including Oxford and Brighton) from the '60s - '90s.

They must be in their 70s by now, but who they are and what happened to them I have no idea. The film was part of job lot purchased from eBay and I don't know who shot the film or anything else other than the clues in the footage itself.

I have no idea where they are or in fact who they are. I collect vintage cine film which I get from car boot sales or ebay, edit them and put them up on TH-cam. Sometimes one of these "lost" films makes a connection, someone recognises someone or knows the people in the film. It is strange though how these once treasured family memories end up lost and separated from their owners.

The use of BSL seems entirely appropriate for a silent film

The Big Apple . The Stones , Elton John and all the greats like Johnny Winter , Colloseum (who l saw) played there . What a great town Brighton was in those days . All Nighter gigs at the University , a thriving Hippy and student scene and plenty of great pubs one of the best being the King and Queen the watering hole for the towns Hippy population and a pub l virtually lived in at the time . Great days .

This is a small insight of how my parents would have been back then in a far more innocent time when not every one was filming them self and putting it on the internet for the world to see just for some misguided sense of want and need , the world has become a very strange place full of especially the young clamoring over one another to be the most seen and loved in the most shallow ways possible on a brighter note though it was nice to see my home town the way it was back in those days and I can't help but wonder what those people went on to become !?

    • @DaveEldergillCineFilm

I also wonder what happened to the people in the films. I find the films at car boot sales or eBay so do not know who they were either.
